I wanted to try Mom's Dumplings in Davis since they advertise they are MSG-free. You order online via the QR code the table. Even though this is how you send your order in, they'll pay payment in person. I ordered the Cuttlefish & Pork Dumplings and the Zucchini Egg & Shrimp Dumplings. I personally didn't care for the fishy taste of the Cuttlefish, but I didn't choose this dish for myself. Overall, enjoyed the texture of the wrappers and liked the dumplings. Um... this place serve dumplings. Ones that resemble those that my mom makes. Which are free. Which I don't have to pay for. Which tastes better. And my mom served it with love and sacrifice and dedication. And my house always smelled good and mom's house has that weird cheap table cloth that looks gaudy and familia at the same time. If a restaurant is gonna call itself mom's dumpling, it's literally asking for it. And if I can get sick of eating my own mother's dumplings... I think the real problem is that all they serve are mainly just dumplings. And nothing else. If all they got were dumplings, it's gotta be good. Or have lamb in it. Or have lobster in it. Or even have some weird combo like a pho dumpling. But if it's just regular dumplings, I don't think it will last. What I'd recommend is Costco linglings. Or your friends who knows how to recreate their moms dumplings. Or someone else who can cook for you bc you are too lazy to make your own. Or a good dimsum place that isn't too pretentious or overly expensive. Don't come here. Unless your friends suggest it. If they did, then don't argue. All dumplings were very moist and tasted fresh. The wrapper of the dumpling was light, chewy, and the perfect thickness. Ordering food is accomplished through using your own phone by scanning the QR code on the table. It features a split second appeal of that grandeur entrance window notable in a Din Tai Fung but after you embrace it fully, the surreality fades sharply into a simply homey experience. I was greeted calmly by the son as he patiently sat me at my table and drew some softly flavored water in a glass. Even though he had other things to do, he made sure my visit was worthwhile by being open to any questions i had even if it was simple ones about how one makes a pillow-tucked dumpling. The dumplings were simply like cloud on a spring day loaded with a bouquet of freshly picked flavors (vinegar, soy sauce and chili sauce for an added adventure). The duck is just spicy to palate the aromatics. The sesame balls were crunchy, light and slightly sweet. I wasn't expecting these dumplings to be THIS GOOD. Got the triple delight which is pork shrimp and chive. You can't taste the chive and it's fantastic. You can tell there's a lot of shrimp, the portion is good for the price, there's the crispy part. I prefer this dumpling spot to the one just across the street because the flavor was PERFECT. The dumplings here are the best in Davis. I have tried other spots in Davis such as Dumpling House on E. St and this place is far superior. The "skin" or wrap of the dumpling is so good and the flavor of the entire dumpling was perfect. The restaurant looked clean and I do appreciate that you're able to see the kitchen/work area when they prepare the food. A lot of Chinese restaurants are really dingy but this one is clean and transparent in their food prep. The owner of the restaurant is very young and I did not expect such a refined restaurant to have such a young owner. She seems so passionate about food that she offered us some yogurt concoction she made because she felt the ones she buys at stores are not that good. Even a non Chinese dish was so delicious. I recently ate here after a post on NextDoor informed me of the new restaurant's existence. With all the chilly fog lately, some dumplings sounded just right. It's open, airy and has plenty of natural light. You order by QR code, and the service is quick. I ordered some hot and sour soup, which was peppery, with sourness not overwhelming the meaty broth. It has plenty of textures too: a dense, almost gelatinous broth (in a good way), with soft tofu and crunchy mushrooms and bamboo. It was wonderful. For the dumplings, I selected the cuttlefish and pork. They were nice and meaty, again with balanced textures. The spices were subtle, and best of all was the explosion of of rich broth when biting in (I hadn't realized they were soup dumplings). The chili oil gave the perfect touch. Im rating this pretty critically since its a dumpling restaurant, and I had every dumpling store in davis atleast 5 times each. This place would be a contender to yangkee if it wasnt for the dough. I think the filling is 5 stars, but the dough is a problem. It lacks structure and it isn't kneaded so it falls apart easily. I am hoping this issue can be fixed because it would elevate this place to atleast a 4.5 stars. The base feels more like a cracker than a thin crisp you look for in traditional dumplings. This is the place to go if you like dumplings. All their dumplings are made from scratch, and ALL of them are fantastic. I went here yesterday with my mom, and we never go out to eat (maybe twice a month max) and since we tried this place, Mom's Dumplings has consistently earned its spot as one of the restaurants out of 2 max we go to each month. We had the pork and Chinese chives boiled dumplings, the black pepper beef boiled dumplings (boiled dumplings are the most common way of eating them in northern China, birthplace of the Chinese dumpling), beef potstickers, spinach and fried tofu. The tofu was fine but not my favorite, the spinach was simple with a nice toasted sesame sauce, and all the dumplings were so delicious! Slightly chewy dough and tasty fillings.
