I came here to try their Shabu Meat Ring Combo for $110. It's tons of food and can feed 2-4 people depending on appetite. The combo comes with up to three broths, three choices of meat, two large veggie platters, two sides, and 4 choices of rice/noodles. The meat quality was really good! Every bite was extremely tender. The broths were also flavorful but not overpowering. They have all the basics for sauce, but I prefer some more soy sauce! The sauces provided were a bit too sweet for me. Overall really delicious and filling meal set. They also have AYCE for $39 per person, a bit pricy but the meat quality here is amazing. Service was nothing but great! Very attentive workers throughout the meal. Filled our waters and asked if we wanted more soup pretty consistently. The inside is really nicely decorated with wall art. Finally got a chance to try this place. The space was surprisingly big with a good amount of tables, some pretty big seating big parties. We opted for a split pot, spicy szechuan and miso and didn't all the AYCE menu. I wouldn't recommend the miso because it tastes just like miso soup like from a Japanese restaurant. I decided to order the Japanese A5 and my husband ordered the American A5. The American A5 is better, more tender and fresh. I could see the edges of my Japanese A5 browning a bit when it came out. You get a side of veggies and a choice of rice and vermicelli. You can get other things like ramen but for an added cost. We also ended up ordering fish balls with roe and tendon balls. Food was great! Super fresh, super tasty. You could taste the high quality of the meats and seafood. Did not do the AYCE option. Got the spicy tonkotsu broth and the miso broth. A bit of a spicy kick in the tonkotsu but it was really flavorful. Each entree came with a veggie bowl that had Napa cabbage, spinach, tofu, Japanese pumpkin, enoki mushrooms, and carrots. So a great variety. Came with either rice or vermicelli and dipping sauce. Inside was super clean and very esthetically pleasing with a neon sign. As far as the service we received, 0/5. Hence taking off a star. Only one guy was working but it was still slow enough for him to play on his phone. He pretty much took our order, dropped off the food, didn't check in on us, didn't refill our waters when they were empty. We put our cups at the edge of the table for him to see, he walked past us multiple times, even carrying the water pitcher but only would tend to the other tables full of girls. Me and my boyfriend had to flag him down to ask for water. And when he finally dropped off the check, it took him a long time to give the card back to us. Met up with friends and family for a very late Friday lunch. It wasn't crowded and parking was easy in the shared back lot. My brother got there first and he ordered the 2-4 person Shabu ring set meal for $110. This style of Hot Pot requires you to cook your own food in hot broth over an induction burner built into the table. It takes time, however, it can be fun if you like cooking. Downside for us lazy people! :) He picked the tonkatsu and miso broths. Over time, the soup got infused with flavor of the meats and veggies we cooked in there. Honestly couldn't tell which one was which, but they were all rich and flavorful. Mmmmmmm! Veggies were fresh and included Kabocha squash and cabbage. Meats he selected were Angus beef and lamb. DH was a huge fan of the lamb. He raved about the lamb's flavor and tenderness. Meats are sliced very thinly, so you have to be careful not to overcook them. Same with the noodles. Kids liked the ramen, udon, and boiled potstickers the best. I was skeptical of the ramen (it's dry, like the packaged ones), but the texture was surprisingly good once it was cooked up. Waitstaff came by frequently to clear plates and add broth. Decor is modern/upscale. Prices seem comparable to other Shabu Shabu restaurants in the Sacramento area. Finally, Davis has a legit hot pot place!! Shabu Shack is located right next to Mikuni, so parking is not an issue with a large lot in the back. We came around 3pm, so it wasn't too crowded. I heard it gets crowded around dinner time, so get there early! My friend and I got AYCE and it was delicious! I got the tom yum and she got spicy miso. They have several soups and tons of high quality meat options to choose from!! American wagyu, beef belly toro, premium lamb, seafood, etc. I didn't get photos of all our food cuz I was too busy eating and vibing to the RnB music they play here (refreshing for here in Davis). Came here for the first time and there were only two servers at the place. I understood coming into this on a Saturday evening would be a little more busy than usual, but we were rarely checked up on. We ran out of broth before any server could come by and we were constantly changing servers throughout the night. All of this with the most expensive service that was offered for the AYCE hot pot. I do not blame the servers, they did an amazing job trying to handle the situation overall. However, when I tried to downgrade our tier and pay the difference for the extra appetizers, the manager was willing to bump down one tier, and yet, still had the audacity to tell us "this is the only time we'll let this slide." The AYCE experience has a 90 minute limit, and we have been at our table for an hour by the time we got our second serving. We did not even get the chance to eat our second serving because we had requested broth before and it had still not come out only ADDING to our time. The manager is not cooperative and it was a horrible experience to get the situation handled.Overall, just come here on a less busy day or not at all. We did not even get a chance to enjoy our meal. ** Since the manager has replied, I would like to add, a food waste fee was added ($10/person, so $30 in total) which ended up equalling to what a gold tier would cost PLUS SOME. so, NO, i would not like a $25 gift card. read more

Went to try Shabu Shack as shabu places are at a minimum in the area. Paid $39.99 per person which I think is more pricey for what is actually given for a AYCE shabu. The quality of the meat was really good. The broth however doesn't have much depth and flavor. We also for the wagyu fries. I think it was over sauced & the meat for that seemed to be tough. Service was good. We went in between lunch & dinner so we were attended to as needed. We have our go to spots here and saw Shabu Shack and always wanted to try it. We thought the AYCE pricing was decent $39/person. I got the Shabu combo ring ($110) it comes with up to 3 choices of broth, I went for creamy vegetarian, tonkotsu, and spicy sichuan, 3 protein: american wagyu, beef belly toro, and angus (1.5 lbs), 2 sides: fish balls with roe and scallops, rice/noodles, I got ramen and 2 large veggies plates. The meat quality is top-notch as it melted in my mouth with tasty broth (my fav are tonkotsu and spicy sichuan), fresh veggies and seafood. The service is amazing, our server always made sure we had everything we need and happy to give extra. The restaurant is very clean inside and it's located in Davis Commons Shopping Center, so there's plenty of parking. Service: 1/5 The service here was what made my experience frustrating. The restaurant was only half full, but the servers here (as other Yelpers have said) are very inattentive and forgetful. First of all, after we said our orders, the server did not repeat them back (as they typically do) to ensure that he had the correct orders written down. Unfortunately, I received the wrong order. I had said "Tonkatsu Spicy" which is what is literally written on the menu. Not only did I receive a non-spicy Tonkatsu, the waiter told me that this mistake was my fault. He told me, "Most people say 'Spicy Tonkatsu,' not 'Tonkatsu Spicy,' so I thought you just said, 'Tonkatsu.'" To make matters worse, instead of offering to give me the proper broth, he remedied this by bringing a scoop of spicy powder for me to mix into the soup myself. Then, when we were ready for the check, we had to wait 20 minutes until the waiter even acknowledged that we were done eating. I had my hand raised for some time before giving up because he did not even look in our direction. Finally, they gave us takeout containers for our leftovers but no bag. When I asked a different server for a bag (because ours was nowhere to be found), she completely forgot. After waiting 5 minutes (during which she continued to make eye contact with us but was just standing behind the bar without any acknowledgement of the bag request), we decided to leave. Vegetarian Option: 2/5 All cabbage!!! You do not get substantial more tofu or other veggies like pumpkin and carrot than what is included in the side dish for other entrees! The broth is also just so-so. It's not worth $18. Beef Belly Toro + Spicy Tonkatsu Broth: 4/5 The meat was was solid. I got the medium size for $21, which has a good portion. I also like the assorted vegetables, but I do prefer places like One Pot (in San Jose) that also include shiitake mushrooms as well as enoki. However, my spicy tonkatsu broth was not the ideal experience because it was just regular tonkatsu DIYed with powder -- not the spicy broth properly made. We visited Shabu Shack during the initial phase of their soft opening. They provide two dining options: an all-you-can-eat option priced at $39, and an à la carte menu. There are also lunch specials well. Opting for the all-you-can-eat selection, we could sample all their proteins except for the Japanese A5 Wagyu. Typically, we could order three or four proteins simultaneously, which seemed reasonable. This option provided a split pot, allowing us to choose two soups per pot. The tom yum soup was milder in sourness than anticipated and lacked the robustness of a traditional tom yum flavor. While it wasn't very spicy, it still offered a satisfactory taste. Conversely, the spicy tonkotsu had more heat than expected, though the spice felt like an additional layer rather than being fully integrated into the soup base. Despite its deviation from the typical pork flavor, it was pleasantly mild, allowing the meat and other flavors to shine. The American Wagyu was exceptionally flavorful and tender, with well-distributed marbling enhancing its taste. This was the standout choice among the cuts. However, the Certified Angus Beef, being leaner and thicker, resulted in a chewier texture and had excessive fat attached, leading to occasional overcooking and rendering the lean beef less enjoyable. Trimming some of the fat beforehand could improve this cut significantly. The beef belly, on the other hand, cooked up nicely with minimal effort. While the lamb's quality was acceptable, its strong flavor became pronounced due to the mildness of the hot pot base. This might appeal to lamb enthusiasts but could be a drawback for others. Similarly, the pork required careful monitoring to avoid toughness from slight overcooking. Overall, the meat quality was commendable, though thinner cuts of beef like the Angus and pork would enhance tenderness and ensure more even cooking. We also ordered the assorted vegetable bowl containing kabocha (pumpkin), mushrooms, cabbage, spinach, tofu, and carrots, all of which were fresh and flavorful. Enoki mushrooms were included, adding variety. Additionally, the fish balls with roe and shrimp were delicious. Two dipping sauces were provided: one resembling a slightly sweet and savory sesame dressing and the other a ponzu sauce. Both paired well with the meats, with the ponzu sauce particularly balancing out the stronger flavors of lamb or pork. Its acidity also complemented the richness of the beef belly. Complimentary ice cream, offering a choice between vanilla and green tea flavors, was included in the all-you-can-eat menu. However, it's only one scoop per person. Service was exceptional, with attentive waitstaff consistently checking on us, refilling our soups and water, and promptly taking orders.
