I don't usually enjoy the food at lakeside venues. So many of them just phone it in and sell the view, covered by a steady stream of margaritas... These folks don't play that game, though the drinks are good and tasty. The food is actually pretty good, especially the chicken and waffles on their weekend brunch menu! You can tell the food is made fresh and not simply rolled off the back of a cafeteria truck (I'm looking at you Oasis). The view is also amazing and the kids enjoy running around on the rocky shoreline just beneath the restaurant. Come give it a try! Avoid Friday nights unless you're very patient. read more

Tried to eat brunch here on Sunday for Father's Day but that ended at 2:00. (We got there at 1:10 and were quoted an hour wait. I was hopeful it would go quickly but the opposite happened and it ended up being about an hour and a half wait.) We had a few margs (they were okay - not too terribly heavy on the sweet and sour but they definitely weren't worth the $9.25 each that we paid for them.) As a side note - the cocktail waitress was very busy and did a great job keeping up with orders. The venue is lovely - great views of the lake and lots of fans and open doors to keep it breezy. The staff was very pleasant, especially the young lady at the hostess stand that kept getting peppered with questions about where folks were on the list. But our waiter was great too. We had the shrimp bobber appetizer. It was good - maybe a little pricey for what we got, and the presentation left a lot to be desired. (Just six smallish shrimp, wrapped in very thin bacon, with a small strip of jalapeno, tossed in some sauce and thrown on a small metal tray with a piece of paper on it.) Husband had the chicken sandwich and said it was good. I had the pork nachos. These were plentiful and looked lovely - lots of ingredients on them. I'm not sure if it was just a miss that day or if this is the normal recipe, but the pork was very heavy on the ginger and it tasted very out of place to me with it being bbq pork on nachos. BUT, we came to sit on the lake, fully expecting the meal to be "fine" and the prices to be a little on the high side and we would certainly come back again. read more

As locals, we don't get out to Shack 512 nearly enough. And we should support the owners as they bring good food sitting on top of Lake Travis. The restaurant suffers from a great location: floods wipe it out from time to time. Several owners have tried to make a go of it. But this latest incarnation is by far the best. The menu offers traditional lake food with more moderately priced offerings. And the quality is better. Drinks may be on the small side. So, this place used to be Niks on the Lake but the owners have changed. The previous reviews are all for Niks. Apparently the new owners got some feedback to improve the menu. I never went to Niks but we live this place. It's an adventure to get to but well worth the drive. They have happy hour Monday through Friday with $5 choices (burger, grilled chicken, alfredo fries, queso, meatballs). I think or table ordered at least one of each and we thought they were really good. The burger was one of the best choices... Sweet bun and well seasoned. The staff was awesome. One of the owners came by to chat for a bit. Our waiter was really on top of things. The only complaints I would have is that they only have three beers on draft and the prices in general are a little high. I think the price is reflected in the view though. read more

Stopped by after boat riding all evening. We wanted to sit on solid surface and have a few drinks. The evening was nice and the breeze was blowing, but holy cow! I had their jalepeno infused vodka and it was hot!!! It was almost unbearable and definitely unexpected. I had to order several waters to cool the palate. My app was the bacon wrapped shrimp with bourbon glazed sauce. It was good but the food tasted as if it came from a frozen package and not actually made in house. Environment is awesome and food is great! What we really set this place apart for me was our server Sierra. The level of service she provided was some of the best I've ever had and I've been to many so called 5 star restaurants. She was attentive and even offered to move us to a different table that had more shade which was nice on a 97 degree today. Will definitely be back for the service alone! read more

Brought my date here a few weeks ago and was blown away. I had been doing research for about a week or so before selecting shack 512 after some careful consideration. I was not disappointed in the least. We went during the week in order to avoid weekend crowds and got a beautiful view of the water. We ordered the shrimp for an appetizer, steak kabobs for the main course, and s'mores for dessert. The steak was cooked to perfection and was so flavorful, especially with the bourbon sauce added on. The s'mores plate was so cute, we enjoyed being able to talk and toast our marshmallows as we watched the sunset. The service was unrivaled. Beautiful location on Lake Travis. I really enjoyed the Fredericksburg Punch that was on the menu. Most of the selections are from the standard burgers/salads type of menu that prevails at the lake, but there are a couple of house specialities that made it over from the other Nik's (not on the Lake but on 620). There is a jalapeño chicken parm dish that looks pretty good. In addition to the Punch, I had a pimento cheese app served with some guacamole and chips. (not bad) and a off the menu meatball sub sandwich (pretty good) with fries. It was a beautiful night on the lake during my visit on Nik's opening night. I will definitely be back as they tweak and improve their menu. Good place! read more

512 sadly has some negative reviews from early in the 2017 season when the rapid rise in business clearly took them by surprise and they could not cope. To their credit they reacted quickly and now look at the reviews! I've only ever been to the Shack by boat and it's a nice way to go out for brunch, lunch or dinner if you get the chance. The view is awesome, perhaps not as good as the Oasis but I'd trade that for Shack every time. The fact that the Oasis is still open is a crime. Everything other than the view is diabolical. Back to the Shack. I've tried most of the menu and it's all very good. My go to, assuming the right time of day (pre 2pm) is the Texas eggs Benedict on the brunch menu. It's the bomb. Top tip - order an extra side of the TX Alfredo sauce. In fact, order a quart to take home! It's that good. The service is great, even when they are busy. Cocktails are great too. Overall great experience every time My last review was of a shockingly bad new Tex Mex in Jonestown. It's therefore a pleasure to review the shack positively as these places that get consistently bad reviews, do nothing about it and somehow stay open bug the **** out me. Give up and make room for someone whose passion for quality and service will please the punters. How hard can it be?! If you don't have a boat, rent one and arrive at the shack on the water. May 14th I joined my family at this restaurant that came highly recommended. The food was great and the service was fairly good. We paid and headed home only to get a charge later the next day for $150 on a $50 bill. We tipped the lady $10 but somehow when the tip was entered in, it was changed to $100. Shady right? We've spoken to the manager twice now as this was already 3 weeks ago. They keep saying they refunded us but I see nothing on my side. It's extremely shady and very frustrating. I've never had this happen and thought they would've at least refunded us our money because the manager was able to indeed check and see that we had only tipped $10. Not sure how many times I'll have to call to get this resolved but one phone call should've been enough. read more

We visited Shack 512 for the first time on Mother's Day. They were extremely busy, and I think surprised at how busy they were. I don't think they expecting this kind of turn out on Mother's Day. The wait was a little longer than expected and they ran out of high chairs, which made it interesting with a 9 month old. In the midst of the craziness, they showed their true colors... The waiter could not have been more apologetic/empathic to the situation. He apologized and really made the overall experience great, despite the craziness. On top of that, the food was AMAZING. We had the steak kabobs with the s'mores dessert. YUM. And the view?...wow. Every restaurant has a "bad day", it's how you handle it that determines whether I will return or not.
