This cute, red restaurant filled the bill and delivered with nice crisp fish and chips, a delicious seafood chowder served with typical brown bread. I wish I'd had room for dessert! If you are looking for simple meal in nice surroundings in the temple bar area this may be for you. rather too large a menu, i say too large as well I have always worried about the freshness of food when you see 30 odd main meal options in a place that sits maybe 50 people. In any case mussels in a cider broth and a pile of fresh bread hit the spot on a cold wet windy Dublin night! Follow that with a Dublin cheese board and I was a happy man. This is my favorite restaurant in Dublin Ireland. The night life on Temple Bar is beyond intense, live Irish music, dancing, and pub crawl drinking until the heart is content, this action brings many to Temple Bar for a good time just about every night of the week. We were looking for a good place to eat one evening while in Dublin and strolled down the old cobble stone streets of Temple Bar, getting a restaurant in such a reveling environment seemed difficult, every pub and restaurant was booming, however, a chance stop into the Shack Restaurant proved to be the most delightful dining experience I have ever had. The owner upon hearing of our dilemma had the staff round some tables up and sat us very quickly, the waitress quickly brought us the wine and appetizer menu and took our order promptly, and although I did not order wine my Irish Guinness came very quickly to my delight. The food was beyond exceptional, the first night of our visit to the restaurant I ordered the rack of lamb (Excellent and cooked to perfection) , and the second nights dining visit I ordered an Irish Enchilada, at first glance an Irish enchilada sounded peculiar but it was the best enchilada I have eaten in my life, the main courses on both visits and the appetizers of fresh clams and Hot Chicken wings were magnificent. The meat was fresh and all ingredients were locally attained as the waitress stated specifically of every dish. The desserts were well presented, and the fresh hand made ice cream was delicious. The staff treated us like we were of royalty, the owner of the restaurant was exceptionally dressed and constantly checked to ensure everything was good, this was impressive to me due to the busy environment, you never felt forgotten or lost in the masses. Upon finishing our meal on our final visit to the restaurant the owner shook our hands, wished us safe journeys and hoped to see us again. This is something we could empathize with as he is likely attending to needy/inexperienced diners and tourists all day. We came to simply eat and were respectful and polite. We received not one "thank you" or "you're welcome." Basically our plates were slammed in front of us. We were not asked if we'd like another drink with our meal and our water was never refilled when empty. The food was just bleh...we had the carbonara (hardly an Irish dish) the Cottage Pie and stuffed chicken. Looking for somewhere to have traditional Irish fayre for Sunday lunch, we were pleasantly surprised to come across the Shack's website, where you can make online reservations. We filled in the simple form and got a phone call within 24 hours confirming our booking. Upon turning up, we were encouraged by the unassuming yet sophisticated shop front. Even though the website mentions that there's 'bric-a-brac' in the restaurant, I was taken aback by how much of it there was when we actually went inside. It was bordering on the intrusive, but the open fire more than made up for it, especially considering it was nearing the end of November and we could do with all the heat we could get. I opted for the Irish stew, which was as rich and deep in flavour as I'd always imagined Irish stew to be. My friend decided to be 'quirky' and have the Traditional Irish Breakfast for lunch. Until it was served to her, we'd never known that there's white pudding as well as black pudding. My friend claimed the black pudding tastes better. We each had a glass of their Chilean house red, which went down nicely and helped us to warm up even more. By the time we'd finished our respective feasts, I was so satisfied that I was even beginning to get used to the bric-a-brac. With no reservations we headed out for a meal in the crowded Temple Bar neighborhood. This place looked nice from the outside and we liked the menu we read so we tried it out. Wait staff was friendly, place was cozy and small, but not tight. On our table we ate fish and chips, soup, potato skins and the lamb shank as well. Everyone at the table was happy..I can vouch for the lamb shank, perfectly cooked, melt in your mouth goodness....in addition, not living in place that has potato skins, I had to order them as I missed them so much...perfectly cooked flaky potatoes, smothered in cheddar cheese and bits of bacon...heavenly for sure. read more

I was walking around temple bar area looking for dinner food, something other than pub food or a cafe and saw this place. I didn't have to wait at all. Usually I'll browse on yelp first but I must have missed this one because it's identified as 'seafood' and I'm not typically a huge fan (although I'll try anything). They had a ton of options other than seafood including beef, chicken, lamb, and a few vegetarian choices. Being as I wanted a 'traditional Irish meal' i went with the cottage pie with minced beef and served with brown bread. The pie was delicious! It was a nice sized portion and I almost wasn't able to finish it (almost...) along with the two slices of brown bread with butter. Most of the waiters were very nice and friendly. What a disappointment. It was a charming environment, the wait staff were pleasant and attentive, and the menu looked promising. Sadly, my dinner was simply a big bowl of beef. Perhaps if I had ordered something different... On the menu the Beef Ireland (I think, or it could have been Irish Beef?) looked delicious. It sounded like a stew, with onions, peppers, and a potato pancake. How could that be bad? What came out was simply a bunch of beef in a sauce, rather than a true stew with vegetables. The beef tasted ok (the sauce was actually good), but was a bit on the tough side. The potato pancake was a thick serving of dry mashed potatoes fried up. Really, had there been some vegetables, and maybe more sauce, the dish could have been ok. As it was, it was just way too much beef - way too much of one flavor. For lunch that day I had the Guinness beef stew at the Guinness Storehouse and it was delicious. The Shack could learn something from that dish. Surprisingly, I saw many bowls of beef come out while I was eating. So, either everyone else was fooled by the menu like I was, or perhaps people liked it?? My friend got the filets of beef with pate on top. I am not a fan of pate, but she gave me some bites of her steak and it was delicious. Again, leading me to wonder if maybe I chose poorly. But, the Beef Ireland also seemed to be their signature dish. Given it to do over again, I would not return to the Shack. I found even common pub food in Dublin more satisfying. Stopped by for dinner around 5:00PM. The wife and I where shown to a table and then promptly ignored. By the time 5:30 rolled around we left, having never been so much as spoken to by the wait staff since being seated. Keep in mind there where only four other people dining in the restaurant this whole time. When i posted my review on google the owner replied stating that "I cannot understand why you did not call the manager or waiter and advise them of your situation." and that "I never understand why people cannot just SAY what's bothering them, rather than taking time to write silly reviews." Well, I would have questioned the manager or wait staff as to why we hadn't been served, but It's quite hard to question them when they hadn't been seen for the past ten minutes. No staff was even present when we left, amidst folks waiting at the front of the restaurant. In short it's a restaurant with terrible service and an arrogant owner. Avoid it at all costs. My suggestion would be to go to Quay's down the street it's more reasonably priced and they actually treat you with something other than benign neglect. read more

Great traditional Irish food along with other standard continental fare! They make a wicked fish and chips, and I thoroughly enjoyed the lamb shank and the cider mussels appetizer. The service is pleasant, albeit a bit slow because they're about a waiter shy of staffed up when the dining room is full, which, given its prime location, probably is just about always in the evening. Agree with the other reviews posted here. Food is excellent, service top-notch and has a cozy ambiance. Even though the tables seem at first glance placed close together, there was still enough privacy to have good conversation without intrusion. I liked that the music was subdued but a nice backdrop as some of the other places we have visited have seemed to think that louder is better-not so when you are actually trying to converse. And they do have outdoor seating as well. Would definitely recommend and come back again on our next trip. read more

Although we were warned to avoid places in Temple Bar ($$$) we went ahead and tried Shack. With the name and location, odds were against us but the place really came through. We opted for a couple chicken dishes in place of the standard Irish fish/stew offerings and both were very good. The curried chicken and basmati rice stole the show with great flavor, texture and spice. Staff was attentive and very friendly. It misses five stars due to the atmosphere, which was a little cramped, and it was too warm inside the restaurant causing a few people to walkout. Given heatwaves are a rarity in Ireland, most times it's probably not an issue. Definitely worth a visit when you are in Dublin. read more

Was in Dublin last weekend and this was the first dinner of our Ireland trip from the US. So glad we tried it. The fish and chips was fantastic. Super fresh and crispy but not oily or soggy at all. In fact most of the food we've had around the country over the last week has been great. Fish and chips here so much better than London for sure!!!! The salmon here was also deliciously fresh. Can't go wrong with the seafood here and large portions. Service was decent but I was a bit put off when asked if I wanted to leave tip on my bill. I felt that she only asked since I'm American and throughout the rest of my week here in Ireland no one else has asked me that!!!! This was a nice place with nice service but was not super fancy or anything that upscale. Food is worth going in for though. I had a lovely thick seafood chowder and my colleague had the fillet steak, both of which were deliciously filling. Stumbled across this place whilst in town shopping, was right beside Temple bar Pub so close to everything. There was four of us and we all got something different of the group tried the pleata bia which was really good value, I enjoyed the sausage and mash. Great spot to just pop in no fuss just good affordable food served with a smile on our visit! Will definitely be back. read more
