Out of towners staying at a hotel around the corner. Front desk staff said this place was good and to get the Mac n cheese pizza. Ok, we'll bite. Got there and there was a wait with a full dining room (good sign). They waitress said they'd call us when there was an available table in about 25 minutes. Ok, fine. Almost 25 minutes later we get a call and walk back over. We get seated and take a look at the menu. It's a super busy menu and we are wondering is what we're getting is going to be good. We ordered the Mac n cheese pizza, loaded fries (wild fries?) and pickle Spears. I also ended up getting a cup of Natty chowder I believe. It took a bit for the food to start coming out but they are short staffed currently. The soup and Spears came out first. The pickles had a bit of spice to them and the chowder was pretty good. We'd order them again but they weren't mind blowing. The fries and pizza though we're awesome. The fries were piled high with chicken, bacon, cheese, and all kinds of goodness. The pizza was properly made and didn't fall completely apart when you picked up a slice. The flavors were amazing - all cuper cheesy and you can just taste all the individual flavors & textures. It was brilliantly made and seasoned. It had already been a long day so we took most to the hotel and stuffed them in the fridge. Had dinner here with some friends and the waitress we had was super friendly. She made suggestions as to what is on the menu. The music and atmosphere was perfect and not too loud that you couldnt hear the other person talking to you. The food came out quickly and hot. We will definitely be back again! read more

This place told me and my family 15 minutes for a seat to open for us, after 40 minutes of waiting they said another 15 minutes. We went home to visit and popped in for a bite to eat. It wasn't as good as it use to be. Chips with spinach dip were stale. Pizza was not bad though. Our server never brought us our change and as a result, she got a 9.00 tip on a thirty dollar ticket. She didn't deserve 9.00, as she wasn't too attentive. We weren't offered a refill by her until the cashier gave us boxes for our leftovers to take home. She brought out the spinach dip with two plates for four people, and she never checked back to see how we were doing. read more

I'm kind of sad to say that I have never been here until yesterday even though I grew up in the area. My experience here was short and sweet, and I look forward to returning. My first tip is call and see how busy they are, because there are 5 restaurants all next to each other in a small town with not much parking. So while they may look packed, they might not be. Their food is great, inexpensive and solid portion sizes. I had the fried pickle spears, and a garden salad which were all delicious. I like the flavor of their ranch but it's too thick for me and it made my salad glumpy. None of the greens in my salad were wilted and brown so that's a huge plus to me. I also got the buffalo chicken pizza but I was so full I barely ate any and took it home, but from the one piece I had the chicken was tender and not an overpowering hot-sauce flavor. I can't wait to eat it tonight for dinner. Four people ate for 60$ including a 20% tip. Service was fast, and friendly. I highly recommend and I look forward to eating here again. read more

The island sauce is amazing. A-May-zing. Always order extra to take home too. Most unique, flavorful wing sauce the BF & I have had. Worth the 40 minute drive from home too. The last time I was at Shade was back in the 60s, so I was looking forward to returning today. For today's trip a friend took me there to buy me a birthday lunch. Our server was GREAT...the food? Not so much. I ordered a Reuben with an "Amazing Side" of fries. Most of the fries were broken bits of fries pieces, greasy and overcooked. the Reuben itself was roughly 2 thin slices of meat (like the packaged stuff from Hormel)and a few strands of cabbage. It was tasteless... I felt bad that my friend paid about $8.95 for my lunch! I'd give 4-5 stars for the young lady who served us, but 1 star for food! read more

Stopped here on a Saturday for lunch and they were decently busy, but there was also a little Art festival going on across the street. There is very little parking in the back, so we ended up parking in the public parking behind the BBQ place across the street. We decided to try a couple different things and the food was pretty average, nothing to write home about. The pulled pork Mac-n-cheese was not what we were expecting, but it did hVe a ton of pulled pork in it, it was just very bland. Same with the chicken quesadilla. The onion rings and Buffalo chicken dip were both good and we tried the French bread with the Buffalo chicken dip and it was great. The garlic sauce on the wings was not spicy, but more like a buttery garlic sauce, so next time we wound get something spicier for sure. The service was great and everyone was very friendly! Fabulous food! From salads to wings to pizza to burgers and sandwiches! And the buffalo or spinach dip!!! Never had anything we didn't like and we go in or order takeout at least once a month because we live in Canal Winchester. One thing I would note is that I think the buffalo shrimp are not worth the price. Don't get me wrong here. They are really good! But they aren't very big and you only get 8 for 11.29. We ate here yesterday thinking it would be a good idea because we had good luck on a previous visit. Well this visit was a disaster. The restaurant was not that busy when we got there, but within 20 minutes the restaurant picked up business. she ordered a gluten-free sub and I ordered a rueben sandwich. The wait was long, and not just for us but other patrons there. Finally our food comes out, and tell you what that was the most pathetic expensive rueben I've ever ate. There was hardly any cheese, sauerkraut, or corned beef on there. Her sub was cold in the middle and didn't even look done. She sent it back, and took about 15 minutes for that to come back out. This place reminds me of the setup at Roosters. However, the wings here are superior in mine and my husband's opinion. Not greasy, just enough sauce, and very crispy. Service was ok. I suspect the servers are overworked and understaffed. Prices are good and the food comes out quick. I like that you can seat yourself and we went when it wasn't terribly busy. Well, somehow Shade has gotten worse than it was 5 months ago. Thought I would give them another chance since it's been 5 months. Not only was the French onion soup (used to be my favorite) nearly inedible, the chili mac ordered with it turned out to be a second order of French onion soup. Since whoever runs the show refuses to spend a couple bucks and have online ordering put in, I get a 16 year old who apparently can't write down an order correctly. All I can say is never again. You're so far away from the pre-pandemic Shade it's pitiful. Goodbye Shade, not that anyone will read this, but you've lost a long time customer. read more

Boneless wings are not as good as what they used to be. Service is still pretty good. We don't go as often as we used to since the food isn't as good as before. Many good waitresses and bartenders no longer there who knew us and treated us with respect when we came in. Not the same vibe as it once was. After hiking a few miles through Chestnut Ridge, my boyfriend and I found ourselves at Shade on the Canal. It was packed. By that I mean only 2 tables left in the place. When we walked in the young lady at the front counter told us to seat ourselves. Being our first time there, we asked if she could direct us to where we might find a seat. She looked overwhelmed and told us that there should be a couple near the bar. So, we squeezed through the isles and found an open table. Our waitress was really nice. She promptly brought us menus and came right back with our drinks. I think we waited 15 minutes for our food. We both ordered the fish & chips. I expected a much longer wait due to the crowd. When the food arrived the fries were cold. The fish, three pieces of battered cod, was hot and tasted great. The coleslaw, which came with the meal, was different. It had heavy vinegar, red bell peppers and spice. I wasn't a fan of it. There was a crowd waiting to be seated on our way out - lined up from inside all the way to the corner of the street. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about? It was so loud that you couldn't hold a conversation, at least not if you wanted to hear the other person. And the food was mediocre at best. read more

There's plenty of sports teams' pictures and photos of the yesteryears lining the walls. Chose the chicken salad sandwich with fries on the side. I must say, quite good indeed! I like to be able to taste the different components of chicken salad. This sandwich did NOT disappoint. Just the right amount (light) of mayo/dressing. Clearly defined shredded chicken - great filling flavor. Big grape chunks. Thin rye swirl bread, lightly toasted. The sandwich was filling - two giant scoops of the chicken salad! The fries weren't bad; perhaps a tad softer. Natural potato flavor, better than tasting frying oil. The last few times I've had Shaw's, it's been take-out. Their Grilled Chicken Cobb Salad is also a healthy alternative I've had from here. read more
