When I am traveling somewhere new, I always try to find breweries that have some sour beers. Typically, most breweries that I've been to will have maybe 1-2 sours on their draft list and *maybe* one sour-equivalent beer in a can. However, let me tell you that I was pleasantly shocked that this brewery in SLC had 3 beers on draft and then TWO LARGE SECTIONS of sour beers in cans. I was overwhelmed and pleased at the same time. I ended up getting a flight of 4 beers (Plum Berliner Weiss, Strawberry Lemon Slurry, Huckleberry Sour Ale, and Winter Lager) and was very happy with all of them. I think my favorite of the flight was the Strawberry Lemon Slurry as I *really* picked up the flavors of both the strawberry and lemon. After that, I got a can of the Indian Masala Sour Ale. It was coconut goodness in a can! Usually with some beers that have certain fun flavors, I don't usually pick them up in scent or taste. However, I really got the garam masala scent (and a bit of the taste) from this can. They don't really offer food over here (they have chips and a pre-made charcuterie board), so I would suggest getting something before/after you visit. The interior is pretty chill once you get into the brewery side. I was a bit confused because I thought I was walking into the wrong place, even after I walked through the door that said "Shades Brewing" and the hours lol. I was the only person in the brewery for a bit (I was there late on a Wednesday night... I don't expect people to really chill at breweries on a weekday), but it was chill because I could entertain myself with the TV and cool music. I'm sad they are not currently delivering out to California (thankfully, I bought some beers to go), but I hope that they continue to expand. This brewery should get a lot of attention! I'm excited to try out the cans I bought... I ended up getting the Peach Cobbler Sour Ale, Indiana Masala Sour Ale, PB&J Blackberry Sour Ale, and the Watermelon Sour Patch Sour Ale... can you tell I like sours?

I went to the brewery in Salt Lake City to enjoy a drink. The brewery has a small indoor bar, some indoor seating, and lots of shaded outdoor picnic tables. This is a good spot for a group. On hot days they put on water misters (the wind was blowing the water in the wrong direction). I had a slushy, the peach habanero slurry, the spaghetti beer and taco beer. The slushee was thick, fruity and nice on a hot day! The peach habanero was subtle and not spicy (faint peach flavor). The spaghetti beer was so odd but not bad. It really tasted like an Italian meal. The taco beer was weird but fun to try. A great spot to try if you like sours. The staff was friendly and you can do a mix and match beer can purchase on your way out. Lots of free parking. LGBTQ friendly. Gendered single stall bathrooms. Dogs welcome. There was a staircase to enter the building of 6 steps. I did not see a ramp so I'm not sure if there is an alternate entrance. The outdoor area has turf on the ground and the tables are picnic tables which could also provide issues for folks with limited mobility.

During covid I went to shades for their delicious brews every Thursday on release days. Their beers are so unique and delicious! My favorites have been tropical thunder and peanut butter! When I say unique... they are unique. They've had flavors such as Tom Thai kah... like the Thai soup. And Indian masala! Don't knock it til you try it. They will surprise you. I Can't wait for it to come back tropical thunder to come back next summer. Their taproom is super chill, it's been great during summer. Entrance is on commonwealth street! Its also dog friendly! Just make sure you clean up after your fur babies! Have fun and enjoy the brews!!

I've been totally digging all of the local breweries and distilleries that have been popping up, all over town! They are all owned and operated by the most passionate and vibrant people, that we can't get enough! One place, in particular that I gravitate to is Shades Brewing - formerly known as Shades Of Pale Brewing, but they wanted to simplify and just make is Shades ( @shades_brewing ), in South Salt Lake, UT. Their brewery was a former meat packing plant, which now houses the brewery, tap room, gaming area and soon to be expanded event space! The owners seem to be very involved in the creation and quality process and, you can tell! Even the color scheme of their bottles and cans are eye-catching! My new favorite of their selection though, are the seltzers. If White Claw had a bolder badass older sister, it would be this. My friend and I were even caught in a blizzard, up in The Avenues and still decided to slowly make the dangerous trek to Shades, in South Salt Lake. So glad we did, because it was a hella bomb experience! They even had some of the #eggnog bottles left (which I'm obsessed with and should actually be called #snickerdoodle , because it tastes like the cookie!), so I snagged a couple of those! My FAVORITIST though, is their #pinacolada , which they're going to start making ALL YEARRR!!! Whattt!!! Clearly, a fun spot to kick it! Def go check them and their beers out! Cheers! xx

    Where the bathrooms are located...

If I was going to get murdered by a serial killer who knew what I did last summer, it would be here. The warehouse the brewery is in is creepy AF. Def felt unsafe. Sours are good though!

I didn't know this brewery existed!!!! Tucked away behind condos and through a short alley way surrounded by industrial business lies Shades Brewing. The entrance to this bar looks like an employee's only door, but it's not. Just walk through where you see the bright red "open" sign and there are directions from there. There's no kitchen here so there's no food, but you can order from the Pie Pizzeria who will deliver right to your table. Beer selection is pretty cool. I tried the kveik which is a sour beer, but tastes like pina colada! I also had the double trub'l which is their IPA and it tasted a little sweet. Not sure if the sour beer ruined my palette for the IPA, but I'm not used to drinking sweet beer. Bathrooms are also located outside and you'll go through a different building. Of course, more signs. Surprisingly very clean, but no paper towels. Based on other yelp members, the patio is dog friendly!

Stopped in to check out the new location for lunch. Must've just made it close to opening. Sat down & made our selection of beers while we waited for food. In doing so, Trent, was the kind gent that had checked our IDs & educated us on what was going on with the menu. I started with the Double Trub'l & when my food came out, served up with a Imperial Stout. The chef that runs the kitchen is an absolute badass at what he does. I was expecting fast casual food & then he slaps us with the Churrasco Burger which was absolutely insane! Fries were perfect, hit with the kosher salt flakes. Burger was cooked perfectly to my requested temp of mid rare. Layered flavors that hit every taste bud on the map. Also got an order split in half of wings, 1/2 garlic, 1/2 homemade BBQ (none of that Sweet Baby Ray's biz here). My hat goes off to you, doctor Get this, brought my wife back with me THAT SAME NIGHT & it was busy! Got the Carne Asada Tacos with the delicious Double Trub'l I had the first visit. She enjoyed her Pina Colada Sour & Sweet Potato Fries Take away: MUST VISIT IN SLC! Get whatever your

I first tried Shades beers at Beer Zombies at the gateway and fell in love with the Piña Colada sour ale, so I had to try and get a hold of more for a friend's party. Unfortunately, they didn't have any for sale so that's why I'm giving this place 4 stars instead of 5. They did have 6 cans in the tap room, but we had to consume them there and couldn't purchase them to go. (Ugh Utah and the DABC suck) BUT, we were told that they were going to begin producing more of it soon, so I'll definitely be back. They also have a good selection of other sour ales, IPA's, and even have a raspberry seltzer that is waaayyyyy better than White Claw.

Tasters! Their glasses are SO cute.

This place is so fun. We did a mini brewery tour downtown SLC and this was our favorite stop! When we first walked in we thought we came in the incorrect door. You're in a functioning brewery right away! You sit IN the area with the lauter tuns, other breweries keep you behind a glass or they're in a separate room completely. (Caution, it does get pretty hot and loud. If an intimate setting is what you're looking for this isn't it.) They have a patio with tables. The tables on the inside are made of pallets and are super cool. The bar is small, but comfy. We had one round of tasters and then each ordered a beer. I had a piña colada beer that changed my life! The plum was also delicious. We can't wait to go back and try more. We just wish they offered food so we could stay there longer!

Love the new location and Austin is a very friendly and great bartender!

After getting my last beer and finding a seat in the back, the shy bartender somehow found his courage to engage and serve other folks, so I naturally took it personally. The ambiance was nice in that it felt like an authentic brewery, not a restaurant that serves beer like some establishments closer to downtown. On a Tuesday, tacosdaddyfoodtruckslc was on the scene serving a brilliant smothered burrito, albeit a bit heavy on rice but still amazing. When I asked a bartender to compare and contrasts two beers, they did so lifelessly and unconvincingly without asking me first what I preferred. It reinforced my perception that the establishment is either low on customer service or selective in the welcoming of guests. I was the oldest person in the brewery at the time and I hope that had nothing to do with it. I was also concerned with their lack of descriptions on their brews, only presenting a name on a wall. A serious and reputable brewer will attempt to communicate their beer to aficionados and this lack of information made me question their commitment to the craft. These are all management issues and given that these deficiencies were outwardly obvious, it makes me wonder what other issues I would find with a little more time here. That said, I was here once and that's enough. Edit: I read the rest of the reviews and I am so happy to learn that their bad customer service, including ignoring customers, is legendary. I got suckered in by the high rating, while failing to read the one- and two-star reviews. I went to another brewery in the area yesterday and am off to have another there (cutting my time here short). I wish this place were better.

Ordering was kind of confusing because you had to wait in line instead of just walking up to the bar. One of the bartenders quickly explained it to us so we got in line. The line moved very quickly. Once we ordered our first beers, we sat at the bar and our bartender then took the rest of our orders while seated there. It seemed like once you ordered and established your seats, you could get waited on at your table but you had to order through the line first. There were 3 or 4 bartenders covering the bar and all the various seating areas. Our bartender was very attentive and we never had empty glasses before she was asking if we wanted another round. There was one time where she got side tracked and there was a very slight delay in bringing the next round for my wife and she profusely apologized and comped that round, but we didn't even notice the delay, to be honest. All the beers were great and the handmade pretzel from a place down the street was delicious. The tasting notes on their menu were spot on for the 5 or 6 beers we tried. They have a lot of seating in the main area and large patio in the back that were both pretty crowded, which is why we sat at the bar. We later found out about their "barrel room" that is in the back behind all the brewing equipment. One of the bar backs said it was a more laidback and quiet area. We peaked back there before we left and had we known about it, we would have sat back there because it's exactly like how it was described. Even with the large crowd we had a great time and it never seemed crowded with the speed of service we got.

The only issue I have unfortunately at this visit was I was trying to grab a glass to take home with me. However, there was a huge line for people to get carded so the front desk guy wanted to card them in first. That was understandable as that created a huge line and backed up the front door. However, someone came behind me with cans so he let them pay first and by the time they finish paying, more people were coming in to get carded. He decided to card them instead of letting me purchase a glass . So at that time I had just left instead of waiting for the continuous cycle of getting carded I'm having to further wait. Hopefully when things are busy, they will have someone to help out carting people in. Otherwise fantastic brewery.

The dumplings (which we were told by our server are handmade) were genuinely flavorless and the wrapper was way too thick and chewy. We tried the pork buns as well, same issue, a serious lack of flavor and seasoning. Pork belly entree was middling, just a flavor profile that didn't work. I had the fried chicken sandwich and it was fried crispy but the sauce and toppings were unmemorable and lacked any kind of punch or umami to speak of.
