We've used them to repair our roof, the same areas twice, it was pricey ($1800), first one lasted 3 years but 2 of those years we had major droughts with very little rain so I doubt it was actually fixed based on the fact that their second fix ($1600) didn't last 2 months when I rained hard. I asked for warranty fix and they came over (they took 2+ months to get back to me, apparently they kept calling the number they had on record rather than answering the phone or listening to the voicemail with my phone number) and leaf blowed the roof and left... 3k+ in repairs and nothing ever fixed and more water damage because of it. read more

Shadowfax Roofing & Solar Replaced our old tar and gravel roof with IB roofing system. It is " continuous white roof". Unlike the tar and gravel roofs this roof reflex's the heat. The roof was replaced a few years ago. The roof its self has a life time warranty. Then a couple of years ago we had a leak from the around the chimney that got under the roof. Jerry replaced the section down to the studs. I have to say I do not understand the any of the negative reviews. Shadowfax Roofing re-roofed our house 8 years ago. At the same time they installed solar panels on our roof. Jerry and his team are friendly people. They offered competitive quote and were very detail about the material used and work to be performed in their quotation. They completed the work within schedule, and their workmanship is superb. Over the years, we did not experience major issue with our roof. We had small leak around the air vent on the roof during the last winter storm, they came and fixed it for free. Last year, 4 of the solar panels had output degraded. Jerry and his team spent time debugging and found issues with the panels. We were unable to file warranty claim for the panels as the manufacturer had exited panel business. However, Jerry replaced 2 of the panels from his excess stock, again free of charge. read more

Noticed a weird wet spot on one of the curtains in the master bedroom after the recent rain. Looked like there might be some water trails on the ceiling as well. We bought the house recently and don't know the age or make up of the roof. Ben came out same day to inspect the issue. Very knowledgeable about roofs, roof care and maintenance. After checking the inside where we noticed the wet spot, he got up on the roof to take a closer look. Unfortunately (fortunately?), the roof appeared to be in good shape. While he was up there, he also cleaned off a few errant palm fronds, caulked a few nails, and took measurements for an estimate to install gutter screens too. Didn't charge for any of it. It's now June. I began getting roofing bids last August. I wanted to compare five for cost, references, and customer service. If they didn't return my call within a day when I was a potential customer, I knew, if there was a problem during the actual roofing, they might not respond. Two roofers said they were too busy then to give me a bid. Those two care only about business now, and not business in the future. Bye Bye. I was down to three. If you want their names, ask and I will give them. One of the three did not have any references more recently than two years. Bye Bye. Down to two now. I called all references from the two I got. Shadowfax also gave me the addresses of every roofing job they have done for many past years, and I drove all around looking at shingle colors, roof pitch, taking to people. The other company didn't have a list like that. Also, John, the salesperson from Shadowfax explained every material (it starts looking easy, but it isn't) and every warranty and answered all of my questions. I began to narrow down patterns and colors. I had an old cedar shingle roof, so I was going to switch to composition shingle. I already have plywood, so that cost was avoided. For the two last bids, they were only $140 apart in cost. In the end. I decided to go with cedar shake again. The materials are far superior now than they were for the installation of my 25 year old roof. Super costly, and more than a Ford, but less than a Tesla, for sure. The pitch of my roof is very steep. Dangerous steep. I think one of the bids just didn't want to do my roof. The workers showed up two weeks ago. I was so nervous about the noise, garden, damage, etc. The demo took three days. It was such a mess, and so noisy! But, quiet at night. Every evening they cleaned up. The workers were very consciences and thoughtful. Every worker communicated clearly. During the installation, there were times that it sounded like a herd of horses on the roof. Very evening they cleaned up before they left. Customer care and customer service is obviously their priority. One of the workers said that he felt roofing is an art form to him. Certainly, laying heavy cedar shake is an art form. I even saw him stand back from the house, look at the roof, and then go back up the ladder to the roof and make tiny adjustments. I have 10 skylights in my house and guesthouse, plus vents, so all that work was done perfectly as well, and everything was painted to blend in with everything else. Chimney braced. No damage to my new white rain gutters either. We soon relaxed about watching over them, since they were correcting things we didn't even notice. They never had to be asked twice to do anything and never forgot a commitment. At the end, the cedar shakes were the right decision. Beautiful. Permit was signed off quickly. I cannot say enough good things about how responsive Jerry (the owner) is and Pam in the office; Francisco the supervisor and all the workers. There was minor clean up at the end, the usual few nails and tags in the garden and some marks on one window that came off with a Mr. Eraser. The workers, and everyone at Shadowfax. were not only professional, they were engaging. A high level of integrity. I hope you choose Shadowfax as your roofer. I am happy, for sure, with my choice and the roof looks great. I'm glad the process is over, but I know going forward, if I have any roof issues, Shadowfax will respond quickly and professionally. Great experience with Shadowfax roofing and solar. John gave us a quote to replace our roof. He was super friendly, knowledgeable and made me feel very comfortable. He was patient and explained all the costs in detail. The quote was very competitive and even one of the competitors said that Shadowfax was great so I knew we were on the right track. At no time during this discussion he said a word about invertor having no local monitoring After several schedule change they finally install the panels. Then I noticed that the only way to monitor the panels was through an app and through a remote service. Shortly after install the servers went into maintenance and no one could access them for several days When I asked Dylan about this, he said you should have known?! Then said if I find something myself they would replace the invertor with a cost If you are looking for a professional who stands by your side and supports you. Go to a more reputable company. I find it funny and a bit sad that Shadowfax roofing is trying to say they have no idea who I am now that I've left a negative review! Perhaps they need to improve their customer service, and actually call people back or show up to give quotes! As I stated in my original review, my husband called them and arranged the quote and the older gentleman that showed up said "Oh, your house is 2 stories. I don't do quotes on 2 story houses. I don't have a ladder." It all went downhill from there! We were promised that another person would come out but he never showed up and, and our many phone calls and messages went largely unanswered. The one time we received a call back, the man wanted to come out in the middle of the work day, which was not convenient from us, and then we never heard from them again! We have since used Woods Roofing to replace our roof and were very impressed with the high level of customer service and great product that we received. We recently purchased a 4 story home and, according to our inspector, had missing tiles at the very top. I called Shadowfax and they sent Don out. I picked Don over other contractor because he takes time to explain the problem and how they will fix it. After carefully inspect the roof, he quote us a very competitive price. They arrive early and got the roof fix in just a couple of hours. He also help us to put up the pigeon spikes on our roof at no charge. We contacted Shadowfax for a re-roofing bid and chose this company because of the great Yelp reviews. We decided to re-roof because we planned to sell the house. Our realtor advised us against it after we had already signed a contract. We contacted Shadowfax right away; it was more than two weeks before the scheduled start date. Unfortunately, we were charged $500 for the permit. The permit itself was about $150. Since no materials were ordered, we felt the company could have shown more grace and not taken advantage of us. I wouldn't mind some administrative charge for pulling the permit but I don't think $350 was in any way reasonable. I recently contacted another roofing company for some work and told them about our situation with Shadowfax. They agreed we were treated unethically. read more

I feel a bit regretful to give a 3 star to Shadowfax but hard to give anything higher. John did a pretty good job explaining to me what ridge ventilation is and why it works well. I was convinced and decided to go with Shadowfax even though their price is not the lowest one. Overall, the ridge ventilation is actually pretty good and our house stayed nice and cool after the new roof is installed even during the hot days this August. We chose the thickest shingle 3TL and the look is nice! But I think they can do better in certain areas, hence 3 star. Here are the list for areas for improvements: 1. The night on the first day of work, it rained but the roof was not covered. So rain came into our house. We were glad that the rain was only heavy for like 10 minutes. I made several calls and finally reached them. They came over at 4am and put up the cover. I know rain at this time of the year is rare, but still ... 2. One area of our roof is flat. One guy who worked on the roof stepped through the roof and part of the ceiling collapsed into the bathroom under. I was told that the ceiling area was rotten due to leak and I needed to hire someone to fix the issue. Although I appreciate that they discovered a long-time leak issue for me, I hope they could be more careful. 3. This is the biggest one. After the roof is done, we noticed that the roof above our garage is not flat (some area is lower and some area is higher and the ridge line has a bump too). Since this is pretty much the only area of roof that's visible to pedestrians, my wife and I wanted to get it fixed. I was told by them repeatedly that the issue was because my old roof was not flat. We plan to pay tens of thousands of dollars for a new roof and they blame on the old roof for bad look of new roof. Unbelievable! With my insistence, they gave me a quote, which includes the cost of tiering off the new roof section, buying new material and putting up the new roof section. Basically, full cost to redone the whole thing. We negotiated with the owner, showed our great disappointment and eventually cut the price to about one third. We don't think we should pay that at all. So next time, in case you hire them for a new roof, make sure to ask them to level your roof. read more

The short version: You won't find a more responsible, ethical roofer than Jerry Shaffer at Shadowfax. A 5-star roofer who goes the extra mile and never cuts a corner even if the homeowner will never see. With his attention to every seam, we won't see any more leaks. The long version: When our nearly flat roof sprang a leak during the winter rains, it was time to re-roof. Since our tar+gravel roof was installed 20 yrs ago, there are new technologies. We looked at conventional bitumen tar+gravel (5-10 yrs), TPO (unproven technology, see http://www.roofingtalk.com/f7/pvc-vs-tpo-375/) and PVC (25-30 yrs). After reading posts on roofingtalk.com and contractortalk.com, there were 3 PVC materials which everyone agreed were best: Sarnafil, Fibertite, and IB Roofing. Sarnafil is a commercial product. No one would bid on a small residential job. Fibertite came in at 2x the rate of the IB roof bids. IB Roofing suggested 2 excellent installers (BBB A+ rating, good Yelp reviews, Angie's List, past customer reviews) who gave us very close bids for only 20% more than the tar+gravel bids. We went with Jerry Shaffer at Shadowfax and are very glad we did. You get a sense right away that Jerry will do what is required to do the job right. Trust is as important in a roofer as it is in an auto mechanic. You won't know how good the workmanship is unless you have a breakdown at the worst moment. We gave Jerry a deposit and he said he'd call us to start the job on the first non-rainy day. Then, it rained for 20 days. DAY 1 On the first sunny day, Jerry asked if we were ready to start. By the time we got off the phone, the tear-off crew was pulling into the driveway! They worked for 2 1/2 hrs, hauled away the old roof and left a clean yard. Impressive! Roofing supplies arrived 2 hrs later. The men laid out material on the roof in neat piles ready for the next day's crew. At the end of Day 1, we left a message for Jerry about some dry rot that might require repair. Jerry didn't call - he showed up at 6.30 PM and we "toured" the roof together. We jointly agreed on the extra work and he was able to assemble the additional materials for the next day. DAY 2 The crew arrived ON TIME. They replaced the dry rot areas, built up a slight incline for proper drainage, added rigid insulation over the living spaces, then covered the whole roof with OSB board. The work area was left tidy. DAY 3 The crew arrived ON TIME. We asked the foreman Vincente if one small area could be built up a bit. Unable to reach Jerry, he went ahead and built it up. When Jerry came later, Jerry built it up even more! The city inspector arrived, saw excellent quality work and immediately gave the first of 2 required approvals. All OSB boards were installed. Jerry returned and inspected the work. A few of the screws missed going through the rafters. He made the crew re-screw the affected sections. We would never have known. Jerry conscientiously supervises his crew and he does what he says he will do, whether you are there to see him or not. A man of integrity. The crew started laying the IB material. They were 1/2 done at quitting time. DAY 4 The crew started promptly. They finished laying the IB material, installed the "boots" over the 9 vents and heat-welded water-tight seals. Jerry was hands-on to make sure all was done right. DAY 5 The crew laid the metal flashing around the perimeter. We wanted the flashing seams to be as invisible as possible, so Jerry and Vincente came out on Saturday morning (!) and stayed until it was 99% done, 10 hours later. DAY 6 Jerry completed the last two flashing seams; we did one final "tour". The city inspector approved the final work. We have a 10-yr warranty on labor and a lifetime warranty on materials. Great job! SUMMARY Jerry managed the process from start to finish and stayed in close touch throughout the process. He personally inspected the work at every stage to maintain high standards. Material was delivered on time; there was a smooth workflow. The crews were very experienced, very polite, enjoyed their work, enjoyed working together, and were very neat. We got a very high quality job that should last for a long time. In contrast, our neighbor recently had a different installer put on an IB Roof. His experience was entirely different. It took 5 weeks to complete the job due to lack of supervision. The crew came late, made personal phone calls for hours in their trucks, left after 2-3 hrs with silly excuses or no excuse at all, they left for days at a time to work on other projects, etc. The lackadaisical attitude showed in poor quality work. Details which had been discussed and paid for were forgotten. Some parts of the roof were done so poorly that they had to be re-done. The inspector had to come out 4 times because the work did not pass inspection. The seam welds of the edge flashing are a different color and stick out like a sore thumb! However, ever since then (several weeks now) I have been trying to move forward with the job to no avail. My husband and I hired Shadowfax Roofing to replace our tired shake roof. John, the salesman, spent a great deal of time with us finding just the right roof for our 1920's house. That's where the customer service and attention to detail ended. The installation began in December 2013 and is still not completely finished as I write this, fourteen months later. Our troubles began on the day of installation when Shadowfax discovered that they had not ordered any roof vents for the new asphalt roof. I did not like the vent that they proposed to use and I needed time to research a custom vent. On the third day, at 95% completion, and no vents, they hauled out of here and did not return until I had the new vents in hand, six months later. At no point did they offer to help with procuring custom vents, which should have been their responsibility. Furthermore, during the six months it took me to have the vents custom made, Shadowfax did not return to clean up the job site or finish their punch list. Finally, the vents were installed, but, not without a lot of drama. The foreman treated me very rudely and I heard him lying to the owner on the phone, saying that I had caused a delay by giving them a wrong paint color. I had asked him to match the gutters and instead he had matched the flashings. He was so unpleasant that I ended up asking that he never return to my property again. They did a miserable job of installing my expensive custom vents, hacking a ragged hole in the shingles. I asked the owner to return and do a better job. In doing so, they managed to chip lots of paint from the new vents. That was several months ago and I am still waiting for them to return and finish properly. read more

I called them up yesterday with the need of getting my attic cooler as it feels like an oven in our house. We started talking about a ridge vent and what it would take/cost to put one in. But Don came out this morning and while I was expecting to hear him sell me the kitchen sink and cost the bank, he surprisingly and honestly told us that we already had a ridge vent and didn't need to put one in. He then told us the problem with our situation was that the eave vents were painted over and generally blocked up and that was contributing to bad airflow and restricting the effectiveness of the ridge vent. So, 4 points for being super puntual (10 minute early), professional and super honest. I'd have given these guys a 5 star and the job if they weren't unfortunately out my budget. Not the cheapest guys around I'm sure, but I'm sure they would do a great job because they priced their time to do the job right and as such they're not the cheapest option. Our current solution, per Don's recommendation, is to go to Home Depot and buy 10 vents and nails, and do it myself. read more

When the rains hit in December, I found several leaks in my roof and scanned Yelp, eventually calling Shadowfax. On a Monday morning, I reached Jerry, who was very courteous and said his worker, Ben, would contact me later. The rains continued throughout the day, and so did the leaks, but no call from Ben. That evening I left an email and a phone message, but I didn't speak to anyone at Shadowfax until the next morning when I called them back. A woman then explained that it would be a week before they could get to the job. When I explained that Jerry had made no mention of a week's wait, she smiled and said, "Oh, Jerry likes everyone to be happy." When I pressed the urgency of my situation, she said she'd contact Ben to see if he could get to me sooner, and said me she'd get back to me. We were pleased that Shadowfax answered our initial call, as we had an almost-flat, large patio roof to tackle, that had been leaking like a sieve, and found that ur neighbors on the "NextDoor" app had ranked Shadowfax near the top. By the time all bids were in, it became apparent that we needed the entire roof done. Workers were well-coordinated, laboring in on some of the hottest days of the year, working around six skylights and a large antenna, and replacing fascia wood, vents, and the gutters and patio roof plywood. Typically they would work until 6pm when they would clean up. We admire owner for his competence, leadership, and calm nature, and for taking a personal interest in our project. In our case he filled in personally installing a special PVC material for flat roofs and finishing touches to the last detail. John Warren, our estimator of many years experience is a man of similar attributes, is personable, and is like a member of our family. Passersby see our home which is at the gateway to our Cambrian tract, and remark that it "looks like a new house." Based on my experience getting a new roof and solar system, I highly recommend Shadowfax for re-roofing and/or solar power installation. Working with Shadowfax was a pleasant and satisfying experience. When I first contacted Shadowfax, their estimator, John, came out to my house the next day, made complete measurements of my roof and then sat down with me and explained in detail what choices were available and what he would recommend for my house. After this discussion I asked for a quote for a complete new roof along with new fascia boards on the eaves, new roof vents, and new gutters and downspouts. John also mentioned that if I was interested in installing a solar power system that they could do the complete project (roof and solar) at the same time and would guarantee the material and installation of both the roof and solar installation. Because I was already thinking about getting solar power, I asked John to also prepare a quote for the solar system. Two days later John returned to my house with Dylan, who Shadowfax's solar specialist, and the two of them presented a complete and very detailed proposal and quote for the roof and solar system. I told them that I would review it and get back to them in a few days. Compared to other quotes that I received from other roofing companies, the Shadowfax quote was competitive in price, but included a couple of items in their base price that other contractor's quoted as an extra cost option, such as long-term warranty on materials and workmanship and premium vents. After deciding to hire Shadowfax, we had another meeting with John, Dylan and Jerry. Jerry is the owner of Shadowfax and he reviewed the complete proposal and quote before signing and made a couple of suggestions for the project that I agreed to. Jerry was very easy to deal with and wanted to make sure everything was done exactly as I wanted. I decided to have the roof done along with the solar power system. I was impressed that Shadowfax does all of the work (roof and solar) in a single contract and that they are responsible for both the roof and solar work so there is not finger pointing and arguments between contractors over who is responsible for what when it comes to the roof and solar work. Jerry personally supervised the roof work and the solar installation. Because the work was done at the same time, there was no re-work required to install the solar system on the roof. Details like electrical wiring penetrations through the roof and installing mounting points for the solar panels were done while the new roof was being installed. The entire project (roof and solar) took about two weeks, plus an additional two weeks for the special inspections and approvals from the city electrical inspection department and from PG&E for the solar system. All work was done to my complete satisfaction including a couple of unexpected roof repairs that were handled very competently and professionally. During the project, if I ever had a question or comment, Jerry was right there (or would call me within a few hours) to answer my questions. When completed, the roof, facia boards, gutters and solar system look great and works well. The new vents suggested by Shadowfax have made my attic and garage noticeably cooler, and the solar system works great. Overall I am very satisfied with Shadowfax and working with Jerry was great -- one of the best experiences I have had working with a contractor.
