There is an additional special element that is important. This business characterizes itself as "kosher". To some people that is irrelevant but for others it is primary. The previous owner had an attitude that was very antagonistic towards the national and international kosher certification entities. For a lack of more or better information, it seemed like there was something "ideological" that took preference over business and community interests. All of us know that there are many choices for excellent restaurants in our area. That is in general. It is not true for Jews strictly observing the dietary rules. The non-Kosher observers, Jews and Non-Jews, were happy to learn Shaevitz UPtown Bbq was sold to a young and ambitious individual with a good Jewish education. North Shore was going to have a place where everyone observing the dietary law could feel comfortable. For non-Kosher observant, it was going to be a place to entertain kosher friends, business associate and family. At this time the established has a kosher certification from an induvial but, not from any of the many known kosher certification organizations. It sadly prevents many people from patronizing this business. This is an opinion. It is intended to be helpful for customers and for the owners. It is not intended to imply anything negative about the individuals or to question his character or intentions. Summary - It is simply easier and more functional for people that are Kosher observant, no matter where they are from, to enter an establishment with confidence that the word Kosher is applied in a context validated by a known entity. My family and I had dinner at Shaevitz Uptown BBQ for the first time last night. We have 7 people in our family and everyone wanted something different. So, we were able to taste a variety of choices! The salmon was incredible! The Teriyaki mushrooms were delicious! We can say the same thing about the Texas brisket, the BBQ brisket slider, chicken tenders, the rib tip sandwich, the stir fry beef and broccoli, and the ribeye steak entree. The sides were just as delicious as the main meal! They are extremely generous with their side of fries as well! All I can say is although this was our first visit, it will definitely not be our last! Shaevitz is under new management and everyone there is beyond kind and provides great service! I called for a rib platter but they dont offer ribs anymore. Surprising since their online menu is labeled August! That threw me off and I order chicken wings. I assumed fried but they weren't. Food is delicious and affordable. The service is also very friendly. It is right next to a kosher market where people can buy meat and their soups. Their chili is the biggest hit. Ken's Diner is my favorite kosher place in the area, but this is a not too far second. read more

Went in there with a group of 7 people. Orders were taken and the food served up quickly. I had the chicken half. Lots of food, I couldn't finish it all. Very well prepared. Also of course it is Kosher. They were very busy, but were efficient and got orders out in an orderly manner. I would definitely recommend this place to you! read more

holy crap okay so. i am a big fan of barbecue, yes? yes. so is my dashing and handsome girlfriend. trouble is, she keeps kosher - and as you know, chicago's kosher dining options are like A) not kosher, or B) bad pizza. and the poor girl, she wants ribs. every day it's like "riiiiiiibs?" and every day she is disappointed, and there is the sad. but then i was poking around on the internets and i find this joint! hot diggity. so the other night we make the 50-minute metra trek out to highland park, and you know, it was worth it. i had the brisket platter, see, and it was as good as any non-kosher brisket in recent memory. but more importantly, the famished lady-friend finally got her ribs. did she ever. i mean these things looked like a carcass in the serengeti after the lions and the hyenas and the vultures take their turn. christ. we'll obviously go back, but wow highland park is a trek from downtown. bring some knitting, or a crossword, or something. read more

I've known about this place for years and always wanted to get some kosher bbq but we never made it here-too far east, I guess. Well, we finally did it. It's a little storefront, not seedy or dirty-I thought it was quite nice for a storefront. There are 8 tables. Order at the counter, food is brought to you. Leave tips in the jar up front. My husband and I split the Texas brisket sandwich platter which is a big, sloppy, smokey mess of deliciousness. The brisket was tender, the sauce was sweet and smokey. The handcut fried were ok, they don't salt them so you have to add your own. On the side, you get a half sour pickle spear and a tiny container of slaw, which is neither salted or sweetened-just add some bbq sauce and it's edible. I also had a bowl of matzah bowl soup. It looked like real chicken soup and I could tell it was made with a real chicken but I could also taste bouillion. It lacked onion, carrot and dill. The matzah ball was ok, fluffy outside, chewy inside. The kosher aspect of this place is open to debate. It's not authorized by the cRc. There is a kashrus certificate on the wall but if it isn't a cRc rabbi, those who are truly frum won't accept it. Me, I don't care. What I saw of the kitchen was spotless. The tables and floor were spotless. I did not see benchers or a washing station for the frummies. So while the food is kosher and they are closed on shabbos, they really aren't kosher. The food here is more expensive but it's kosher so there you go. It's a million times tastier than what you'd get at Garden Fresh's Kosher Korner in Northbrook. I'll be back. And next time I get my own sandwich, no sharing. read more

There is a new place called Shaevitz Uptown BBQ here, which caused some confusion when we were looking for details on this place. The BBQ Brisket plate cost about $13.00 + 2 sodas worked out to be $18 (expensive for a can of soda). The brisket had a little bit of smoke to it, was thick cut, but also had a lot of BBQ on it. It had a different taste to me that I did not particularly care for. The steak cut fries and coleslaw that came with the meal were pretty standard. Overall I was very underwhelmed by the food I had here which is too bad because I really wanted to like it. If I am looking for BBQ when I am up this far North I will stick with Real Urban BBQ (RUB). read more

Had time before the movie and we were happy to find a small restaurant and have some yummy brisket. Problem was, it was not yummy at all. Everything sounded good as we checked the menu, but we were so disappointed ... When we heard the owner ? ask the customers if they needed a knife to cut the brisket - we should have gotten the clue. HOLY GEEZ!! This place rules. I am a huge bbq fan, I've had it in Georgia, Tennessee, and the best places within Chicago and let me tell you this is just as good as the best this city has to offer. I ordered their Texas BBQ Brisket and it was cooked to perfection and doused in an incredible sauce. The best part though was the pretzel bun. This has really caught on as of late, people are really taking notice to the impact this bun can have on a sandwich. My only complaint would be the price, but on the flip side the best bbq joints in Chicago are all a little pricey . Overall, I rate this place as a pants changer after you eat the food. BEST...JUMBO CHARDOG IN THE WORLD. PERIOD. I buy them from the butcher shop next door when I grill out for friends/family/clients and nobody can believe how good they are, especially the jumbo dogs and jumbo natural casing dogs. My guests end up seeking them out for their own parties. It might be the highest quality hot dog made anywhere. They also make absolutely fantastic corned beef, pastrami, salami, and similar deli items on site. The chicken soup is medicinal grade and the matzo balls are perfect. This place is the restaurant side of the kosher butcher shop and sausage factory next door, Shaevitz, which has been in business in the Chicago area for around 100 years so everything is fresh and made on site. Because it is kosher there are some limitations like no cheese, no pork, ect, but if you know what to order this place is just heaven for take out or a very causal dining experience. Service and experience is more like Manny's than Morton's to be sure, but it hits the spot! Great for takeout and delivery. I love this place and have been going here for several years. The good: Great food. Effective staff. I think it gets its meat from the shohet at the market next door, certifying it's fresh, one of the few Kosher places in Highland Park, good location. The bad: Quite pricey, but that's OK. I don't know what these other reviewers are thinking but this is the worst bbq i've ever had. I go to Highland Park a lot for work and drive past this place so I checked out some reviews, everyone said it was good - and it looked good so I tried it out. I got the brisket platter. The fries were the best part of the meal and they were burnt. If they call this "true texas brisket" then Texas should sue this place. I don't think it was even brisket. They say they slow smoke it...maybe in the microwave. I still feel sick from this food after 8 hours. I didn't finish my meal it was so bad. Don't even try this place, not worth it at all. I was in town with my girlfriend, and being a red-blooded American man I saw a sign that said BBQ and thought, "Well, why not?" Allow me to tell you why not. First things first. THE MENU Confusing. The lettering is all the same size and color, not to mention the fact that the layout of all of the cutesy little chalk boards they used (trying WAY too hard to look like a "real" bbq joint mind you) was terrible. Am I splitting hairs here? Maybe a little, but it's this kind of attention to detail that makes it obvious the owners are new to the business. THE FOOD Not good. Although I'll admit I didn't realize this was a kashrut certified restaurant at first, I still expected the food to be good. It wasn't. After realizing there would be no pulled pork (sad face), the girlfriend and I both decided on the smoked, pulled turkey sandwich. She got fries, I got house slaw. Water to drink (more on this later). The wait for the food was not bad at all. However, when everything arrived is when the disappointment sunk in. This turkey was not pulled, or even smoked. It was sliced and more than likely simply oven roasted. I have no problem if you want to start a restaurant, but if you're gonna tout yourself as a BBQ restaurant, methinks you should fire up the smoker. The sauce on the turkey was procured from a Chinese takeout, I kid you not. Orange, zingy, and not BBQ sauce. Awful. But the main reason it was there was to cover up the dry, non-slow-smoked turkey. The slaw was ok, nothing to write home about. The girlfriend's fries (yes, I stole a couple. Don't judge) were not good either. This place just kept swinging and missing. They were cut too thick so the inside was not cooked through. Seasoning was non-existent, and whatever medium they used to cook them in left much to be desired in the flavor department. ATMOSPHERE I kept getting stared at by a woman who was in the midst of dominating a dinosaur sized rib bone. Uncomfortable. I also got the vibe that I was not welcome there. The waters we were drinking were never replenished, while the non-waters that other diners were enjoying were topped off...several times. I totally understand if nobody gets their drink refilled. It's a bbq place. I don't expect a waiter to come out with a towel on his arm ask the Madame and Monsieur if they would like more water. But we had waters, which don't cost them very much to produce (which may be the reason we were stiffed) Also, if the OWNER is going to personally bring more drinks to some people and not others, then people are going to write reviews like this one. Additionally, upon leaving the restaurant, that same owner sat there and watched us leave without even a simple, "Thanks for stopping." Great. I just shelled out $30 to help keep your dive running (a huge mistake by the way), I at least expect to be thanked for my business. I would have had better luck eating a sandwich from the gas station across the street. Next time I'm in town, I will do just that. read more

When I visited this little store front BBQ place I was impressed with the menu it all sounded great. I ordered the Texas brisket sandwich ( I am from Texas) but anyways here is my review just because you put a ton of BBQ sauce on a bun with some meat doesn't make it BBQ. The sauce is good and the bun is awesome, but the goodness stops there the meat was terrible and was not cook on any type of grill, more like in a oven. The coleslaw was ok very little flavor and the pickle was decent. In conclusion if you want real BBQ I would skip this place. read more

Their Texas ribs are the best ribs I have had. Their sandwiches and brisket is very good too. But go for the ribs you won't be sorry!

The skirt steak sandwich is like gristle , thin and tasteless. There are far better skirt steaks in highland park they could emulate i.e. Ravinia BBQ or BBQ Pit. I strongly recommend they stay competitive and start serving a better kosher skirt steak if they want to survive in HP which i would like them to read more
