This place was literally 2 minutes walk from my place and I've been wanting to try it for so long and I finally decided to but I was alone and I can only order so much and my eyes instantly went to the nachos so I did order their nachos and it was really good it wasn't saturated with cheese which I liked and I added chicken to it so it's one of the places where they have good nachos. I also did order their French onion soup which was my very first French onion soup and I liked it it was covered in cheese it was very tasty I wasn't expecting to like it just because of the name but I tried something new and I liked it. I did find out that they are closing from May 11th to the first week of June just because they are renovating the place however the food is going to stay the same and everything else is going to stay the same they're just going to renovate and update the place the service was amazing she took care of me I sat by the bar and unfortunately I wasn't able to get her name. Parking is an issue it's in the plaza so a lot of parking spots. I am definitely looking forward to coming back and trying more things on the menu oh and they do have happy hour from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for a few of their appetizers and some drinks that is something to take a note of. A mid-2026 revamp of the décor and menu at Johnny's Kitchen & Tap, together with a new business name (under the same owner), has transformed the passé supper club-style restaurant into a contemporary sports bar. We could not agree more that the 1980s décor was looking tired and old, and the menu needed refreshing. The new decor is considerably brighter and also more spacious and open. But really now, do the north 'burbs need another sports bar? Without the old sound-absorbing surfaces, the noise level is considerably higher. A contemporary pop-rock soundtrack blasting from the speakers combines with commotion from the bar, making conversation difficult. The menu has been updated with additional apps, burgers (and other sandwiches), pizza, "Wok Out" bowls, and Tex-Mex. Thankfully, an assortment of the old school dinner entrees including wood-fired rotisserie specialties is still available. But there is no longer a separate menu of dinner specials (including the Three Course Supper). And, while entrée prices are unchanged or modestly higher, the tradeoff is that the entrées come with a single side dish whereas they previously included a bread basket and a choice of soup or salad. Currently a bowl of chicken tortilla soup is $5.95 and a garden salad ordered with an entrée is $3.00. We ordered the latter. The side salads here used to be generous in size, but what we got this time was a surprisingly skimpy serving with a puddle of water at the bottom of the bowl (which seems to be a trademark of their salads). We used to pay a modest upcharge to substitute a small Caesar or Greek salad, but now these upcharges are $7.00 and $8.00, respectively. Bummer! We expressed our dissatisfaction to our server and also a manager. Both were pleasant and understanding (I suspect they hear similar feedback from other diners). My Missus ordered a single pork chop BBQ-style ($18.95) and requested that it be broiled with sauce on rather than poured over after it was cooked. The kitchen neglected to follow this request. I ordered the cedar plank salmon ($29.95) and our friend ordered the chicken kabob ($22.95). Everything was very good but nothing really stood out. Value-wise, the current menu is overpriced. Sports bars are popular to the point where they have become very competitive. The places that are innovative and offer an upscale menu and - importantly - good value have the edge. This place was renamed to Lake Avenue Tavern and apparently gone through some updates although this was my first time visiting. I ordered the pepperoni tavern style pizza and the chicken tenders. Let's start with the tenders: very good. Hot and juicy, on the thin side, and great meat to breading ratio. It was a large portion, so really good value for the price and they came with really nice roasted jalapeño aioli and peppercorn ranch. Now the pizza: very very subpar. This is not a tavern style pizza for one. The tavern style is traditionally square cut. While this pizza had the thin cracker crust, that was all it had going for it. The cheese seemed like it was pre-packaged shredded cheese as it coagulated weird. The sauce tasted cheap, and the pepperoni was okay. I was just surprised that a place near Chicago would fail with the pizza. Now to be fair, I still ate it. It wasn't horrible, it just tasted like a pizza you'd get at like a movie theatre or something. Aside from the food, the hostess was kind of rude to one of the team members who was wiping down the table. She walked right up behind him and put the menu on the table before he was done wiping and I felt like that was rude. Michael, my server, was great. My husband and I usually come here for a cocktail before or after dinner. Johnny's Kitchen and Tap is a fantastic spot for cocktails, beer or wine. We love to sit at the bar during Happy Hour. The bartenders are always very attentive, friendly, and make great drinks. I have tried the Dirty Martini and a Manhattan and both have been great. We have also tried the Filet sliders, and they were juicy, tender and delish! I catered Johnny's yesterday for a small conference and everyone commented on how good the food was! We did the Greek chicken that came with the most delicious real mashed potatoes and a fresh crispy green salad. I did a side of pasta too which was good but we would have had plenty of food without it. The price was so reasonable and the food so good! Got the chafing dishes and all utensils! Johnny's Kitchen & Tap had closed to remodel & is now open as Lake Avenue Tavern. My husband & I had eaten hear often; even for Easter, Christmas & Thanksgiving. I had visited recently & was a bit disappointed. It seems to emphasize the bar & alcohol. The restaurant needed remodeling & looks much cleaner & up to date. Service is still good. However, I am not happy with the new emphasize. My husband & I came in for dinner & given the menu. The food items are mostly in small print but the drink offerings are in much LARGER print & with a yellow background. Had to carefully look for the food items. Had a hard time even finding where their roast chicken & ribs offerings were. The have taken several items off the menu. A dinner salad had come with the meal but not now. It is extra with an upcharge for the simple side salad with only 2 or 3 slices of radish & 2 grape tomatoes. While my husband had gotten the Greek salad & it had 2 wedges of a beefsteak tomato, onion, fetta cheese, etc. but still the size of the dinner salad. The bar use to have a divider between the dinning area from the floor to the ceiling but it has now changed. It now only goes 3/4's up. You now can hear more of the bar "noise" in the dining area. They have also added TVs all over the restaurant! They also have taken out the coat rack as well as some booths. I guess I should have known just by the new name. Tonight, we went there for a St Valentine's Day dinner. I had a Reuben sandwich and my lady friend had shrimp and fries. The food was very good, the service was fast and the atmosphere in the dining was quiet and cozy. The meal was good but sadly we found out that they will be closing at the end of May 2026 and converting the place into a different type of restaurant/bar. Went to the newly reopened restaurant last night and loved everything about it. The staff was great, the food solid and the atmosphere was lively. I would give it 5 stars if the lighting was more intimate. LED lights can be bright and irritating which is a distraction. And playing more familiar music would help with the ambiance. Part of the charm of Johnny's was the moody lighting and great tunes. Overall I highly recommend. read more

June 19, 2026 - The worst service I have ever experienced in any restaurant. I specifically asked the server questions about the food and the pricing. When I pointed out that on the website, it stated one price, they would not honor that price and called the general manager over, Mary, and she stated they weren't following that pricing. I stated, you should honor it because it was online, but she wouldn't. Not only did the server make multiple mistakes, the kitchen forgot to put two items on my rotisserie chicken sandwich, and the manager also did not know that there was anything missing from the sandwich. It took over half an hour to get a glass of lemonade. In the end, I was charged double for a soup that was supposed to be included with an up charge of five dollars, but I was charged 12. I was really looking forward to the grand opening and seeing all the new changes both indoors and on the menu. The inside looks wonderful, but their customer service and food was the worst that I have experienced. I was very disappointed and likely will not be going back anytime soon. read more

I first had Johnny's about 23 years ago when I moved to Glenview. I moved away in 2006, but once in a while we are out this way and stop in. They have been consistantly good for all the years. My son can't eat wheat which limits his options, butbhe loved the BBQ chicken with fries and broccoli tonight. I ordered the roast pork special with stuffing, apple gravy and real mashed potatoes. It was wonderful until my daughter forced me to trade for her steak queaadilla. Fortunately it was the best quesadilla I've ever had, LOL. Service was good and very quick. The place is dimly lit, but cozy. My only complaints were that the french onion soup was sweet. Then the balsamic dressing was sweet. And the BBQ sauce was very sweet. We passed this on our way to run an evening errand and after looking at the menu, we gave it a try. We went in and it's an old bar/restaurant from the 70s or 80s that has its classic charm, but great food. You can smell the meats being smoked as soon as you walk in this dimly lit restaurant. We ordered a skirt steak dinner and it came with a salad. We both upped for the Greek side salad, and that was a large and hearty portion for a beginning salad. The dressing was delicious and was perfect for the pile of fresh veggies and feta cheese. I ordered my steak and was able to choose the starch, so I chose rice. It was about 8 oz and felt much bigger. It was tender and juicy as well. I asked for it Greek Style and only wished it had a tad more lemon, but all places are different. I have no complaints about it. My husband ordered the Veal Liver and it was also a large portion. It came with bacon and onions, mashed, and veggies. He loved his liver and loved the way it was prepared. We found out they smoke and grill all their meats, and we could tell because you could smell it throughout the restaurant. The service was very good. You're able to tell the staff has been there for many years. Our service was also very good. The server made his recommendations and was very friendly. We continue to go here every few months, and last night I had probably the second best fish dish (to a heavenly Dover Sole I had in Nassau years ago) I've ever had. It was a parmesan crusted tilapia with a delicate, buttery sauce, and it was outstanding. The portion size was substantial, too -- I brought half home and had it for dinner tonight. I also appreciate that they always get my Manhattans right. My only wish is that they would have Amarena cherries for my drink instead of typical maraschinos. Service was excellent, too -- nicely attentive without being intrusive. I was there with a friend who I only see once or twice a year, and we always appreciate somewhere that lets us sit and talk and doesn't try to rush us out. read more

I hate to say, but this place is going downhill. I'm not sure if they changed owners or just cost cutting measures. I was here last night. The atmosphere was dismal. The food was mediocre at Best using cheaper ingredients and cutting down on any extras. Even the bread in the basket was mundane and uneventful. They didn't even offer any oil I had the French fried shrimp which looked like frozen shrimp. They were so tiny you ate one mouthful. My boyfriend had the turkey club, which was so boring looking on the plate with nothing else. You don't get your choice of soup and french fries you can have one or the other or a side salad. My mother lives in an independent living facility in Northbrook. She says that if her friends go out, this is where they always go. So, today (a Saturday), we had an early dinner with her at Johnny's Kitchen & Tap. The first thing you notice when you walk in is very dark. You'll see that in my pictures. At 4:30 on a Saturday afternoon, it was almost empty - 2 other tables were in use and a few people at the bar. The waiter seated us at a large, comfortable booth. I did mention it is dark in the room. Much of the lighting was blocked by the high backs on the seats. So there was even less light at our table. Thanks to cell phone makers for putting flashlights on phones. We could see the menu! Shortly, we all decided what we wanted - London Broil, Chicken Bruchetta, and I ordered three oysters and the two pork chop dinner. All of our dinners came with salads, and they had the most wonderfully warm and crusty bread on the table. The salads were all good - the same salads with ranch, vinaigrette, and one with Greek dressing. They all came with sides. With the London Broil, there were green beans with carrots and mashed potatoes. With the Chicken Bruchetta, wild rice. With the pork chops, green beans and carrots, and a baked potato. The salads were all good - the same salads with rT The oysters were fair. They served the oysters with Tabasco, cocktail sauce, and sliced lemon. But they had a decent flavor but not the best. I chose them since they were on a special for $1.50 each. The meals: The bruschetta looked great. Chunks of chicken with vegetables layered on a skewer sitting on top of wild rice; the London broil also looked excellent. It was centered on the plate, with mashed potatoes filling one side and vegetables filling the other end. And, the pork came as two huge chops with a large baked potato on one end and the vegetables on the other. I can say the same thing about all of the meats - they were delicious, albeit a bit dry. The pork chops had a wonderful spicy flavor with lemon and were cooked on a wood grill. The same could be said for the London broil and the skewers. All were dry in texture, but the flavors more than made up for it. During COVID, we mainly cooked or ordered delivery. We have rarely gone to restaurants. As we ate and time went by, more people came in. It was so lovely seeing people for a change. read more

What a complete disappointment our experience was. I've heard great things about this place and this was the first visit and most likely the last. It was Sunday night and we decided to treat ourselves to a nice meal at a nice restaurant we've never been too. We should have went with our other choice, Texas Roadhouse as much of a joke that is, it would have been better. I ordered the Strip Steak and Shrimp and my sister ordered the Chicken and Ribs. I asked for the steak medium rare and it was well done and tougher than shoe leather and the shrimp were small, dry and hard like a hockey puck. I took one bite and sent it back, I never do that but for $29.99 Mary can eat it herself. My sisters chicken was as dry as can be and the ribs were as well. She wanted to send it back as well but was hungry. She paid $5 extra for French onion soup that wasn't even very hot, it's like pre made sitting in back and not very fresh. We kept hearing a microwave door open and close from the kitchen area, I'm assuming that's how the soup is warmed up. A whiskey and coke which was all ice was $10 and hardly tasted like booze. I sat and watched my sister eat and we got the check, they obviously took my food off but we still spent $70 with tip and felt like a complete fool paying that. I walked out hungry because all I ate was a salad and bread. I went home and heated up leftovers on a the one night we thought we would treat ourselves. Being invited to dinner at 6:00 p.m. out in Glenview, by two lovely brothers who are treating me and my wife at Johnny's Kitchen & Tap, was an exciting prospect except for the possible 90 minute drive it's going to take to get there (and it did take 90 minutes). Once we got there we were completely ready for dinner. A very nice receptionist ushered over to "The A Table" and we all dove into their bonafide comfort food menu. The food they were offering was pure Americana: Cheeseburgers, BBQ ribs and chicken, liver and onions, all kinds of steaks and so much more. My wife and I both ordered the Chicken schnitzel that came with a baked potato, a salad and dessert. When I saw the price of this trilogy, I said to myself, "we're not in Chicago anymore Toto"! This package was a steal. Everything was good*! BTW, good*, really means, good*! The Four Stars earned here is exactly that - Good! The ambiance was suburban diner chic. The noise level was soft and considerate and everyone working there was delightful. The four of us chatted and clambered through the night and we all had a great time. We celebrated a birthday luncheon at Johnnys thus last weekend. They've spruced the restaurant up with new sifter chairs and new walls paintings. It looks nice. They serve a small breakfast menu, and we had steak and eggs which was really good. I had a burger ( I'm not a big burger eater but went with the fried), and it was obviously a pre made prepackage burger and was nothing special and I would not order it again. We had an appetizer of fried calamari which was a large portion and nice taste. Or waiter was Deago and he has been there a long time and wonderful! I'll go back to Johnnys because I've eaten there for years and the food is consistently good. Omg! They have the best food here, at least every time I'm here it's great. Met some friends Saturday night. They ordered the calamari appetizer. It was so friggin good! The calamari was so tender. The breading was perfect. For dinner I ordered the scallop stir-fry with broccoli, carrots, pea pods, cashews and rice. I have not tasted anything this good in I don't know how long, the flavors in here are amazing. It has just enough heat (spice)!
