Solid place for classic Chicago grub and outstanding customer service. Tbh the hot dog was kind of bland but I enjoyed other items a lot more, such as the polish and the italian sausages. Mushrooms and onion rings are good. I've never been a fan of frozen crinkle-cut fries, but Dogout cooks them perfectly. Last week I saw a sign in the front window: "For Sale - We want to retire". Let's be critical and put the fact that it's family owned aside because the wife was horrible to me and was the first time I came here and I assumed it was a fluke. Now that they are all grown up, it was time for 1/2lb *big boy* cheeseburgers...no more 1/4lb for my 6' teenagers :-) I ordered up a chicken sandwich on a pita, and my kiddos had the cheeseburger. The chicken sandwich was lightly seasoned with some sort of Greek dressing (I think) and perfectly charbroiled. Tender as can be, I ordered it in a pita, so they chopped up all the pieces and threw in an abundant amount of fresh lettuce and tomatoes. The pita was notable. It was lightly crispy on the edges. Like a salad in a pita! Moving on to the cheeseburger. Don't let the super char photo fool you. The burger was dark pink in the middle and not overcooked at all. It was served on a lightly toasted bun. Though I'm trying to eat less red meat, I had to steal a bite. Topped with American cheese, just perfect for a hungry teenager, the burger combo came with a side of their yummy crinkle fries. All perfectly cooked and lightly crunchy, there were no fry chunks left over. The portion size was so big my kiddo couldn't finish it. A win for me! Customer service was off-the-charts. The owners were friendly, and they checked in on us several times to make sure we were happy. I like how Bannockburn has this hot dog fast food place that has a Chicago Bears related mural, complete with signatures from the 1985 offensive line, including TE Moorehead's signature! It almost makes you feel like Ditka can walk in any minute although I heard that he sold his place, which is not too far from DogOut. The lunch specials are solid and the Chicago dog is what you would expect in the city. The fries are hot and crispy! The food is straightforward (they don't put gyro meat on a sausage) and so is the decor. I was actually confused by the hot dog menu because no toppings are listed - and they don't have a toppings bar (or I didn't see one). I asked for it Chicago style and of course they knew what to do. * Chicago dog ($2.69): a boiled Vienna beef hot dog, huge pickle spear, sport peppers, chopped onions, yellow mustard, relish, tomatoes, celery salt surrounded by a soft, steamed soft poppyseed bun. So this is my first time here but not my last. If you like Portillo's cheese fries you will love the fries at this place. It could actually be better than Portillo's. No joke. The cheese sauce comes out nice and hot and the fries are the crinkled kind that go fabulous with the cheese! They give you a lot too. Easily good for two. Since I'm a fat kid at heart, I ordered myself a char double dog with cheese, ketchup, extra tomatoes, grilled onions, sport peppers, celery salt and pickles on the side. The dog was one of the yummiest I have ever had. I'm a Chicago girl so that says a lot. Quite surprising how one of the best dogs I've ever had is here in the North Shore and not in the city. Props to these guys for that. It was charred to perfection, not burned like some places do. Sorry I had to deduct a star only because I was looking forward to the grilled onions the most but when I got home there was no grilled onions anywhere in sight. I was bummed at first but the fact that the cheese fries and the dog were so good I got over it quick. I live walking distance to the popular Micheal's and Stasha's in Highland Park but I will totally make the drive out to this place next time I want some yummy fast food. The sample cups showing the sizes by the register caked w/dirt and dust...how hard is it to dust it or replace it? It was probably microwaved to heat up. The fries might have been good if they were not cold. I'm sure they must have something tasty, but they didn't serve it to me. This hot dog oasis seems so out of place in its posh setting, and that's just one of the reasons that I love it. It's a welcomed addition to the somewhat stuffy strip mall. The two times I've been there a sweet man has taken my order and rounded my bill. Gotta love whole numbers or only getting quarters for change, but the food is what keeps me coming back. They have some really delicious cheese fries with deliciously crispy fries and potent cheddar cheese dip. My only complaint is that the Polish dog does not look anything like its picture and didn't have as much flavor as I expected. It just seemed like a larger version of a regular hot dog and it looked like they had just been boiled first and then slightly charred. I was hoping they would just cook it all the way through. There are two choices in the burbs...Dear Franks and The Dog Out. The later of the two had the better fries as well as a killer veggie burger. They stopped the fries with ridges! Whoooooa! Menu a little too big for my taste, but in today's "health conscious" world, I guess you have to be all things to all people. Needless to say- I didn't try a turkey burger or salad, but just a good old fashioned Chicago hot dog. I had it with "everybody on it"- mustard, relish, pickle, onion, tomatoes, sports, and celery salt. Fries were crinkle cut (not a big fan. I prefer the 5/8" cut-well done). The hot dog was good-definitely all beef. It was a skinless dog (no casing with the nice "snap" when you bite into it) and it had that "over-brown/greenish hue" which indicates to me that it was sitting in the water awhile. The bun was poppy-seed (huge plus-getting more difficult to find) Fries were good(frozen, not fresh cut)-oil was clean and they weren't undercooked. This place has character. This place seriously has the best veggie burger I have ever tasted, and I have eaten a LOT of veggie burgers. I went in with a friend because we were in the area for work and needed lunch. As a vegetarian, I figured I would just get fries or something to hold me over. To my surprise they had a veggie burger on the menu! I didn't get my hopes up, thinking it would likely be a boca burger or something similar of the frozen variety. Boy was I wrong! I'm not sure what they make the patty out of (thought it looked to be primarily orange in color), but it was way more satisfying than any other veggie burger I've made or bought. I kept checking under the bun because I honestly couldn't believe there was no meat in it, it tasted so good! I was here a few months ago and also had the crinkle cut fries, though apparently they aren't doing those any more? I hope that's not true, or that they will reconsider, because I got crinkle cut cheese fries with my meal and they were delicious! I'm now obsessed with their veggie burger, which is unfortunate because I live about 45 minutes away from this place. I will have to make a pilgrimage soon! read more
