I'm a lover of Indian food but finding good dairy free vegetarian Curry's can be boring. A lot of Indian restaurants just have daal that I'm able to eat but I was pleasantly surprised by Shagan's. The owner was incredibly friendly and explained what I was able to eat and the service was very quick. It's really quite inspiring what Shagan and her family are trying to accomplish in Overland Park, Kansas with their new restaurant/catering adventure in offering home-cooked Punjabi Indian to the Greater KC area. Meals served at Shagan's are meals you would expect to experience and taste if ever invited over for lunch or dinner at a Punjabi household. If you enjoy Indian cuisine and want to explore more types of regional Indian cuisine and flavors; I would highly recommend stopping by for lunch or dinner! I personally want to try their Rajma (Kidney Beans), Sarson Ka Saag (Mustard Greens) with Makki Rotis (Corn Bread Rotis), and their Gobi Paranthas (Cauliflower Paranthas) All, of course, if able to make vegan! :) For Vegans: I called ahead and asked what items can be made Vegan (No Dairy or Animal Products). Shagan and her team explained to me what on the day's menu was vegan. I was a tad disappointed to learn the Paranthas was not vegan. Shagan's alternative vegan-friendly bread option that was a Roti. I loved the delicious Indian food served by a friendly, cheerful, welcoming, and helpful owner pursuing her dream. My thali chicken kababa lunch included a generous portion of flavorful chicken kababa, tasty parantha bread, delicious lentils, creamy paneer (with a perfect medium level of heat), and a small gulab jamun dessert for $8.99. The lunch menu features veg or non-veg thali, while the dinner menu changes daily (posted on FB) so as to focus on offering the freshest food. A tasty, hot Chai tea, canned beverages, and a weekend brunch were available. The dining area was clean, but spartan, with Indian background music, and a noisy exhaust hood (which should be fixed soon). Overall, excellent! read more

One of the nicest restaurant owners I've met here in KC. The family owners genuinely want to share their love for food and it translates transparently into all their dishes. Each item from their menu is reasonably priced and prepared with intention. Their to-go box comes with two entrees, rice, and plain rotis and is worth every penny! I had the vegetable korma which was so creamy and flavorful. The owner also gave us some potato samosas to try and boy, was it full of spices! I also had their punjabi curry which was one of their daily dish that changes on their Facebook page. After a full meal, I was not left feeling heavy and satisfied. After a bit of a hiatus in leaving Yelp reviews, there is no better restaurant to start back up on than Shagan's. This was my first time visiting, and they didn't disappoint. They are currently open during COVD for limited dine in seating or carryout. They even even have a drive through window! Environment is very casual and laid back, with a large TV which they had college football on during the Saturday we visited, so that was a win for me as well! :) This is a small family run business with possibly the nicest and friendliest service we have EVER had. We felt as though we were guests at their home. Unlike most Indian restaurants we have been to, the menu here is very limited with appetizers and entrees, but you can tell the love and passion they put into their limited menu. Even with a limited menu we couldn't decide what to get, so they recommended a platter, which gives you 3 meats or vegetables, a side of rice, and Naan or Paratha. We each got both meats (butter chicken and chicken curry), as well butter paneer and veg korma. We were told butter chicken was the most popular, but everything was delicious! While this sounds like a lot of food, it is portioned perfectly to allow you to try a variety of items (see my picture). Would highly recommend this. We always choose Naan, but he asked if we ever had Paratha, which we haven't, so he said he was going to bring some out either way so we could try. Paratha is now our go to!! I also asked if there was an appetizer he would recommend, and without hesitation, went with Veg Samosas. Everything we had was incredible and made fresh. During our meal, Shagan herself came out to our table to talk and see how our meal was. She is one of the nicest warmest people we have met, speaking to you as though you are a guest at her home. We learned alot form her and her family on other items on their menu, that we will definitely be trying next time we visit. I now follow them on Facebook, and make sure you do as well as they do daily and weekly specials introducing different dishes for a limited time. They stay up to date on keep their current menus posted on Facebook and on a white board inside the restaurant. If you have not been here before and are wanting Indian food, go now! Food is beyond reasonably priced, and this is a 5 star Yelp restaurant for a reason. With many restaurants this size struggling during COVID, I hope more people try Shangan's and continue to support them. Can not wait to go back!! read more

This is my favorite food of all time. 44 years old and have never had anything better! 2nd time eating here and hoped it would be as good as the 1st time. It was even better! We got butter chicken, vegetable korma, curry chicken, chicken tandoori, aloo paranatha, and vegetable samosas. I've never eaten a meal before where I Iiterally say "mmmm" after every bite! We made our order to go, then later the restaurant called telling us they did not have any Aloo Gabi. As we had already paid, they told us they would refund us, but that the "uncle" was the only one who could reverse the charge. We had to hound them to refund the money days later and just recently--they charged us AGAIN for the amount. We were really excited to try based upon reviews, but we disappointed with what we received. Our favorite was the samosa chai, which I ordered as an afterthought based on my curiosity. It's was crushed up samosa and chickpeas and full of flavor! We also ordered 16oz containers of chicken curry and a dal dish. Both were fine but lacking in the flavors I expect from the other Indian restaurants we frequent. We also ordered 8oz containers of mixed veggies, which were okay, and butter chicken. This container literally contained five small pieces of chicken and the rest was the sauce. My daughter enjoyed it and was disappointed she couldn't have more chicken! Then the bread situation. We were supposed to have (based on their recommendation) two pieces of naan (only got one) two parantha and a roti. Only received one more of one of those which just had a wheat taste to it. Paid for five, received two. They were super busy so I didn't bother to call and it's far enough away that it wasn't worth the drive back. Just disappointed because we were really excited to try this place. Probably won't rush back but would try again when it's not a busy time. read more

This spot definitely doesn't look like much, but for a student like me, it is a little piece of home. It is inside a grocery store at the corner of a shopping center with a inconspicuous drive through window. The menu is small and written by hand and it is definitely run and owned by family. This is my new favorite Indian restaurant by far. Those of you who know, will know. The food here tastes like going to an auntie's or uncle's house for dinner. When I called, they explained that they only do rice with the combos... which I didn't even see as an option when I ordered online via Yelp app/Grubhub. I had a mixed experience with this place. First of all, this restaurant is in a small space with a grocery store in it with not much tables. That didn't bother me that much considering me and my family found the table. As for the food, it was just okay. I had three different entrees on a plate, which were: butter chicken, dal, and chicken curry. My favorite dish was the chicken curry, as it was flavorful and not too spicy for me. The other two dishes, the butter chicken and chicken curry, however, had decent flavor but was way too spicy. The thing that I didn't like about this place was the dish costed $12.95. The dish did have one piece of naan and some rice, which was nice to include in the dish. However, the food is definitely not worth this price, considering I am sitting in a fast food environment (not a fine dining establishment), and the food was just okay. While I would say that there are a couple of bright spots with this place, such as the chicken curry and friendly service, this restaurant is not worth the money they charge in my opinion. read more

Tried this place for lunch today and was very impressed. We picked it based off the other Yelp reviews and I have to agree it's incredible. Obviously, the butter chicken is a huge fav of my fam but we also tried a few items off the recommendation of the staff. Super friendly people work here, they were very helpful and kind & even brought us freshly made hot chai tea when we were done eating. The food is better than any other Indian food I've had in KC. I was very skeptical of a 5 star restaurant but boy oh boy was i NOT disappointed. I started off with something easy like rice, a samosa, and curry chicken and it was awesome. Not too spicy, great smell and flavor, very tender chicken not too fatty. I have been to india and little india in Singapore and have had some GREAT authentic indian food and this place was AWESOME!!!!! Small, quaint place with extremely friendly staff and what looks like a huge amount of pride in what they are doing and cooking. It is also a smal grocery store so if u want to try to make something yourself at home there is plenty of noodles, spices, and indian products to take home and try on your own!
