Our favorite restaurant during a weeklong trip to New Orleans with one day in Mississippi. We sat on the second floor overlooking the beach and Mississippi River and just comfy and nice. Chloe, the host, could not have been nicer, friendlier and more helpful when talking about food choices, the environment, where to go and personal things. The Mahi tacos were really good, my wife really enjoyed her grilled unicorn fish and my tie Die margarita very good. And I can't leave out Mariah, a very good server. Went to Shaggy's in Gulfport on July 31st for a stuffed flounder meal as it sounded great and according to chat, fit my low carb dining option. Also order a half pound of the boiled shrimp. Shrimp came out first and the best thing that I can say is that they were eatable. Not for sure if they were freezer burnt prior to cooking, but being a life long coast guy, I have eaten freezer burnt shrimp at home cookouts and it was the same. Don't get me wrong, they were not horrible, but they should have been better. Now to the flounder. The presentation was nice and the taste of the fish was really good. The down side was the lemon cream topping that was added. My biggest complaint was that it was too sweet and thick. It would have been great over a cornbread or something like that, but in my opinion, it ruined the flounder. On a brighter note, the service is incredible. The perfect spot for lunch after the aquarium. The alligator bites were so good. So good. Everyone in our group was happy with their meal and drinks. We arrived at lunch time on a Sunday and had to wait 10 or so minutes for a table. The place was busy but we did not feel crowded, plenty of space at our table. This place had quite the decorations to make it feel like a beach party venue. The servers were pleasant and accommodating to our requests. I tried the gator bites for the first time. They are too chewy for my tastes but the beach balls were my favorite appetizer. My friend and I had the seafood boil. She ordered hers plain without the seasonings and a side of garlic butter. I had mine with all the works. They gave us crab crackers without having to ask. They came to refill our waters, such amazing service. I live in New Orleans, but when out of town guests come to visit I always ask them if they would like to go to Mississippi. On a nice day, Shaggy's is my number one choice. The menu has something for everyone. Lite bites, lunches, cocktails a plenty. The last time was especially nice with 2 gals from England in tow. They tried fried green tomatoes and Alligator, perfect if visiting the deep South. I had a daily special which was a creamy crawfish pasta. If you love great service, look no farther! On travel for work and this place was next to my hotel. Its a beach vibe with indoor and outdoor seating. The inside is clean and super nice inside. They have corn hole boards and they have misters for the outdoor seating. The inside has a u shaped bar with plenty of seats. The food is excellent and includes great specials like seafood boil and more. What has me solid on this place are the staff. Everyone I dealt with was fantastic and pro-active offering things before I asked for them. The atmosphere is a beach vibe but the service in my experience was a 5 star resturant with smiles on everyone. We came here while in vacation. The food was good, not great, but a solid good. Everyone liked their food. My in-laws have come twice on this trip. It's a good vibe and they have a large selection of draft beer. Their prices were surprisingly reasonable considering they are in a beach community and the economy we are currently in. Our daughter had recommended Shaggy's after many visits and it didn't disappoint. We love fresh seafood and the unicorn fish with jasmine rice had great flavor and was cooked well. Great place to eat out with a large group, but be sure to call ahead. Menu has plenty of choices to pick from. I especially loved the poke avocado, so good. The royal reds were also one of my favorites, and it's always good to try new things like the gator bites. Service is friendly and fast, even with a large group. Shaggy's was super busy when we visited, but the service was still great! Our server, Justine, did an excellent job making sure our table was taken care of, and our drinks came out quickly. The food is mediocre to "how can you mess up _____??" Warm wilted caesar salad with watered down what they are calling dressing. Blackened flounder was drowned in what is NOT a butter sauce but only questionable dairy sauce. NOT lump crabmeat on top, but a patty underneath that you would get from the freezer section at Walmart. Smoked tuna dip mostly salt....it should have had cream cheese with a hint of smoke. How can you mess up A HUSHPUPPY?? Not fried, maybe warmed in an oven or microwave and dry and tasteless inside. Coconut shrimp....no coconut but baked grocery store shrimp. LEMONADE......lemon water. We started out outdoors with the best seats in the house overlooking the ocean! Great early 2000s music! We ordered the watermelon lemonade, which is delicious! I got the sausage gumbo and the hubby chose Caesar salad. Both were absolutely terrific! Much of the menu is heavily fried--think fried shrimp platters, fried flounder, fried catfish, fried captain's platters (often with gator bites), fried green tomatoes, onion rings, and similar baskets served with fries and hush puppies. The core seafood offerings and platters lean strongly toward the deep fryer. More notably for a place right on the Gulf, a significant portion of the fish and shrimp is imported rather than locally sourced. We arrived here for lunch while the 28th Annual Cruisin' The Coast was underway. So, besides viewing several noteworthy antique cars parked at Shaggy's as I mounted the wood ramp leadng to the restaurant, on the second floor from our table we could see several colorful classic automobiles cruising next to the ocean below. Besides a very pleasant casual beachfront ambiance and fine service, the food at Shaggy's was excellent. Diane and I opened with an unusual app of Beach Balls: Fried Mashed Potatoes stuffed with cheese and bacon. I also had a Stuffed Avocado: two avocado halves filled with sashimi-grade Yellowfin Tuna Poke that was quite refereshing. Then I ate a Captain's Catch Fish Sandwich tht was a large flat fillet of white fish fried and lightly battered, and joined with fresh lettuce, tomato, Red Onions, and pickles. Lemon and homemade Tartar Sauce completed this sandwich that was encased in a soft bun. For me it was the best fish sandwich ever! Hand-cut French Fries were a nice accompaniment. This was the first time going out to eat in Gulfport and it began with a wonderful dining experience. GG was our waitress and she did an awesome job. She was very kind, knowledgeable, and made us feel like family along with treating us like valuable customers. There was a party of 37 folks ahead of us and believe or not our order came out in a relatively quick amount of time and it was done to perfection. I ordered the Souther Shrimp platter and the shrimp was firm and delicious. It was worth the price we paid. We thoroughly enjoyed eating at Shaggy's and plan to return during the next six weeks in Gulfport. The restaurant was clean and all of its employees worked really hard.
