    Lunch 2. Tuesday Combo Special

This place is a hidden gem and I will fight anyone who says otherwise! I have never tried Indian or Pakistani Food prior to this and was super nervous that it would be too spicy for my typical taste buds. However my co worker convinced me to try this and I got the Tikka Masala and Chicken Masala, which comes with really well flavored jasmine rice. I'm now obessed with this. It has a touch of heat for me, but the flavors are so rich and unlike anything else I've made, that I find myself scooping up every last bite of sauce and rice. I'm sad that they don't deliver and they aren't open for lunch in addition to be located in a strange basement area, which is why I took it down a little in stars. However, it is amazing and I will go here for lunch on any work day possible.

You know how they (whoever "they" are) say that hole-in-the-wall restaurants are usually the best? Well, Shah Jee's is a hole-in-the-GROUND restaurant. Yes, it's literally the basement level of a parking garage/office building. There is no signage, there is no warning. You literally have to know someone in order to find your way to this establishment. And hey, you know me! Very simple. Belly up to the bar, tell the guy that you have no idea what you're doing and you want today's special. Pay (CASH ONLY). Eat. And while you're eating, wonder how you never knew about this little diamond in the rough. Today was a chicken dish and something with chick peas (lentils were also available) and a huge pile of rice. Don't ask what it is. You don't need to know. Just eat the stuff and be very very happy. Some tips and suggestions: It is spicy. A little hot (maybe 6-7 on a scale of 1 to 10) and very flavorful. Expect it. It can be messy. Big pieces of meat in sauces are never a good thing for clumsy klutzes like me, so be prepared and wear something that will hide stains. It is ONLY open for lunch and they do sell out. So arrive early and be hungry. It is cash only. At the moment, $8 gets you lunch and a can/bottle. I would recommend getting it "to go" even if you're having it to stay. Larger portion!

Based on my last review, some new menu items may be in order, but everything I have here is always solid! Today's chicken masala and saag paneer was just as good as the last time I had them.

I'm considering an IV line. It's kinda life or death now. Gotta start serving breakfast and dinner and on weekends.

Inexpensive and fast. Daily special includes a drink. Nothing fancy. Get prepared for the curry. Ambiance - this is not the place.

First time here…read more Food: We were excited to try some Somali/African cuisine. For beverages, we ordered the chai tea and the mango smoothie. I was expecting a plain chai tea, but what I received was actually a chai latte. What a wonderful surprise! It wasn't the type of chai latte I might expect from a local coffee shop, but it was better than many I've had. We started with a couple of veggie sambusas. They were excellent. Hot, crisp, and fresh, with a generous filling and served with a side of mint chutney. Together, they made a fantastic flavor combination. We also ordered hummus and pita bread. Both were fresh, tasty, and well presented. The final part of our meal was the Goat Platter. It arrived hot and fresh, with generous portions. The goat meat was delicious and tender. The serving was large enough that I took half home, and it will make great leftovers. Service: The gentleman at the counter was friendly and efficient. He was very attentive, bringing each item to our table. He seemed genuinely proud of the food, its presentation, and our reaction to it. There was also a woman in the back, whom I believe was doing most of the cooking, and I had a chance to thank her as well. Atmosphere: The restaurant is small and unassuming. It was clean and well lit, thanks to the large front windows. It appears that most of their business is takeout, but there are several tables available for dining in. We were the only people eating there during our visit, so it was very quiet. Overall: We were super impressed with this little spot serving excellent Somali/African food. The quality of the food, the warm service, and the generous portions made for a wonderful first experience. We'll definitely be back.

Never thought I'd find good Somalian food in Milwaukee or at all. The goat was cooked perfectly and…read morewas still moist. I've been to other Somalian spots where they cook the lamb so long that it's tender, but stringy and dry. Not this place - it still had it's succulence. The seasonings were on point. Both the chicken and beef sambusas were tasty - but in my opinion lacked the punch compared to other sambusas I've had. The chicken one was especially bland, but the sauce saved it. The chicken one was dry and had a shredded texture. I suggest making small dices to the chicken and mixing it the slightest amount of gravy to keep the chicken moist before folding it in the pastry. The service was really friendly. Everyone needs to go here now! I'll definitely be back

I specifically love that they have a menu of so many different roti options, and I really wish I could try them all. We got a dosa, char kway teoh, and a roti planta as well as a bandung to drink. The roti planta was the only five star thing we tried lol but I'm keeping the five stars because I thought the prices were good and I also hold space for I prefer other styles of making these foods. Specifically, I wish the bandung was as good as the one I had in Singapore (I am forever chasing that high), and I prefer a South Indian dosa at places in Chicago. I also prefer the Malaysian char kway teoh because the noodle felt a bit sweet and less of the wok flavor.

I ordered the roti filled with chicken, onion, and egg, and it was tasty. I could see the roti being cooked in the kitchen area which was visible and that was fun to watch. The dish was delicious and it was plentiful so I could save enough for lunch the next day. A couple of folks felt their food was on the spicy side, so if you need a milder version, make sure to tell them. For the stuffed roti I ate, I felt the spice level was just perfect - not too much but not nonexistent, either. The menu is vast and there is so much to try, including dosas, all kinds of rotis, noodles, soups, and more.
