Not sure how it's rated so high -- the food is barely edible. My guess is paid reviews. Microwaved food at best. Chicken is dry and dyed unnecessarily red. Kofta tastes like a rubber band. Chewy like bad calamari and nothing resembling kofta. Hummus tasted sour -- not like lemon sour but sitting out for too long and turned bad sour. And the freaking falafels, hard as rocks. Chicken salad platter that had grilled chicken with a chipotle flavoring and cucumber and tomato along w hummus and garbanzo beans. The chicken was mildly flavored but had some gristle and fat. Just tried this place recently with my Fiance. We are a huge fan of halal food and are really glad this place opened up near my house. I've had Shahs once around the Stony Brook Area and really enjoyed it, however it was quite a drive in order to get there. My go to for this place is their Combo meal over brown rice. This location opened up basically right next to Marvin's house and I find myself eating here once a week! It's consistently high quality food and I get what I expect every time. I always get the chicken over rice with a piece of pita bread which they cut in half and warm before giving it to you. I always get extra onions just because that is something that I like(doesn't cost more). The extra white sauce on the side costs 50 cents more but I haven't had to get that because they completely pack the white sauce on the food as you can see on the picture! I typically eat about half of the food that they give since it's a very generous amount. Overall the food is delicious, they give a nice portion and the price is great. Really hits the spot! I've been to Shahs plenty of times and it has never let me down. I highly recommend the combo over rice! It comes with rice, chicken and lamb, and you can add a lot of toppings onto it such as lettuce, pepper and onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, and don't forget about the white sauce! I like to get my sauce on the side since they do put a lot if you don't ask for it on the side. Finally!!! I've been waiting for this place to open since the sign went up November 2019. I've been to three other locations (Selden, Huntington and Commack) and this place is on par with the rest. Dunno why, but I've gotten the same guy at the counter each time I went to order a platter (three times in a row). For some reason he pushes half the rice to one side and then puts the protein and toppings over the rice. I asked him why he did that and he said "to save room for the salad," even though I never asked or wanted any "salad." Since the first time, I've made it clear that I don't want any "salad" and to make everything even all the way across (protein and toppings over the rice). He still leaves the space for the "salad" that I told him I don't want (or want over my rice instead of on the side). I felt good about myself this morning, but maybe I look like I need some salad! Was going to get food from a neighboring establishment when I saw that this place has opened in the shopping center. For whatever reason, I was drawn to Shah's, and specifically, the picture on their window of the chicken over rice platter. Walking in, the place has a big wide open space. I'm sure the intent is to have tables & chairs in a post Covid world. There was somebody ahead of me in line, and another person came out from the back to take my order. I asked for the Chicken over rice dish, and then didn't know what to expect. They sort of follow the Chipotle model of asking you what else you want to go with it. You can choose lettuce, chick peas, onions & peppers, tomatoes, etc. The real magic is hidden within that heavenly "white" sauce, as well as a slight sprinkling of the red spicer sauce. I pretty much went with the works, and that foil trail was packed full of Halal goodness. Of course, I took it to go. When I got home, I took the plastic off my container and dove right in. Let me tell you, my taste buds were on cloud nine. The food is delicious, and the mix of all those ingredients, with the chicken and brown rice, is right on point. I was incredibly satisfied. I've been back a second time since, and this time, while I ordered the SAME EXACT THING, (went with the chicken AND lamb combo this time) I witnessed them making a pita wrap for the person ahead me and it too, look awesome. It was huge. You would probably need to unhinge your jaw to be able to consume that thing. Wow. I've never had Halal food before and I am generally a picky eater, so when I picked up a dish at this new restaurant, I was cautious and definitely not sold. I am now! I had the Chicken Over Rice with black beans, garbanzo beans, lettuce and white sauce. It was really good and the flavors mixed well. I tried it for the first time today after hearing all the hype. I was slightly disappointed with the temperature of the food. The gentleman behind the counter had just finished my first of two sandwiches when I arrived for my pick up order and he was working on the second one in between another order that was there at the register. The chicken in both sandwiches were a bit above room temperature but not hot or warm. The use of spices in both sandwiches were very good it was a very sneaky heat. But I could not stop thinking about how it reminded me of room temperature Chinese buffet food that you find at a steam table. I'm debating if I want to give this place a second chance. Maybe not, because it was a slow Friday at 1PM and this food should have been more than just room temp.
