I'm glad to find Shah's has a new location in Stamford so I don't have to order from the Norwalk location. Shah started out as a halal cart in Queens, NY and has since expanded to brick and mortar restaurants. The food is good and the vegetables are fresh. My favorite is the fish. It is tasty and light, not as heavy as the other meats. You can choose from a few mix-ins, including hummus, but I prefer the mix vegetable salad and the onions and bell peppers. So I had a busy day on Wednesday and didn't have time to prepare dinner. I remembered that there was a new Halal restaurant near us on Hope Street. We ordered Chicken over Rice, Kofta Kebab over rice, Falafel over rice (do we like rice?), a Philly Cheesesteak (yes, they make these!), and a side of Falafel. They offer a number of "toppings", such as hummus, "white sauce", hot sauce, green chili sauce (they recommended we ask for extra green sauce when we go to pick it up, so we did), tahini, side salad, etc. After I called they told me the food would be ready in :15 minutes (!!!) and I was like, ok, that's great, not believing them. I entered a very clean (and very red) establishment which upped my confidence in having chosen the right place for dinner). I showed up in :15 minutes and they were just finishing up making the food and I was in and out of there in just about two minutes - but not before speaking with the nice gentleman at the counter ringing up our order, who answered my probing questions such as "how long have you been open" and "how many Shah's are there?", etc., which he graciously answered. On the counter they had for sale their white and hot sauces bottled and labeled, which alerted me to the fact that this is a much larger operation than I first thought. Apparently, Shah's is a big supplier of Halal street carts in NYC, and the nice person behind the counter told me they originated in Queens. As we drove home with our order, we got stuck in traffic on Hope street at 5:00 PM, as one does, but the car smelled amazing. Finally, it's dinner time! The family comes to the table and we all open our orders. We begin eating and everything is... DELICIOUS. My kofta is the perfect consistency and flavor. The rice took on the kofta flavor and the hot sauce, hummus, tahini I ordered over it was placed on top, but sunk in to the meat and rice a bit for a very flavorful eating experience. The hot sauce is HOT - no joke - so I'd only recommend getting it if you like spicy. (You can also order all of these toppings on the side). I like spicy. When I was eating my dinner, it took me back to my days living in NYC, like the fictional restaurant critic in the movie Ratatouille, where upon his first spoonful, travels back in his mind to simpler days as a young boy. Only I went back as a 19 year old eating a gyro from a street cart on Sixth Avenue & 50th. My entire family enjoyed their respective dishes, and at one point, the table was completely silent, as we devoured our food.
