Definitely lots of hype surrounding this place, so I decided to check it out before my friend moves away to Texas.
We got there later at night, on a weekend, around 9pm. There wasn't a huge line trailing outside, so that was a plus. I got a Single Shackburger with fries and a Caramel shake for $15. Fries are an additional cost, fyi. Service was quick, and the place was about halfway filled with tweens and teens. While there are seats that can seat 2 or 4, I thought it was pretty cool that you could also sit in family-style seating with plenty of seats for a large party of several groups of people.
Service was fast and efficient, and I even found the meal to be decent. But for $15 I'd rather have a burger with more taste and substance and more bang for your buck. It really is at its heart and soul a fast food burger joint, with the grease to prove it. For $20 I can get two Farm Burger burger lunch specials (with fries) and drinks. And for $15 at a restaurant, I usually eat about half of the portions and save the rest for later, so it's essentially two meals for one. But not here, I was able to eat the entire burger (about the size of any kind of burger you could get at a fast food place) and the fries, and the shake. And I was still not entirely satisfied, in fact, I felt sick. I don't usually feel ill after eating a burger unless they use tons of grease in its construction, so I can only guess that was the reason here. It's the reason I don't eat fast food if I can help it: it tastes like shit, is unsatisfying, and makes me feel ill.
PROS:
They actually make their burger medium.
Fast, efficient service.
There's a patio and even a balcony to eat on, though that might be a little wasted in the winter months.
It seems they try to use more or less locally sourced ingredients.
NEUTRAL:
There IS complimentary valet parking, either right passed the shack on the left (you have to do a U-turn), or if the Shack is on your right, go down the next street and take the next right. Otherwise, there's virtually no parking close by.
CONS:
So much grease is used that I felt ill after consuming the burger.
Expensive for what you get: basically gussied up fast food. If it neighs like a horse, and has hooves and tail like a horse... it doesn't matter if you dress it up in fancy blankets: it's still a horse.
Small milkshake that was $5 a pop, and honestly wasn't that good. Sickeningly sweet, in fact. Chick Fil A and Steak & Shake have better tasting milkshakes.
It smelled a little like dog when I first entered, but maybe that's because they offer dog treats and people can possibly bring their dogs in? I'm only presuming here, though, as I didn't actually see any dogs.
THE VERDICT
I was expecting a better tasting burger for the money, but that's probably because my expectations were just high. I think a place that's called the Shake Shack should serve more than a handful of shakes, and maybe something more regional than a Peach Shake. The best thing about the burger was that it was cooked to medium doneness, which I've seen fail at many other well established burger places. Despite this, the greasy nature of the food made me feel ill afterwards, so while I think my body just isn't accustomed to grease like the average American, many other people who eat this kind of food would probably love this place.
