This is the new Shake Shack that is using kiosks for ordering so you don't need to talk to any humans to get your food started. It's a nice bright location right in Astor Place, though is not a huge amount of seating compared to some of the other big shacks around the city. The ordering is quick and smooth, and you get a text message when your food is ready. Danny Meyer's famous hospitality focus isn't as noticeable when you're running in for some quick fast food, so I'm totally for this new model of shack. read more

From the door greeting to the manager personalizing my order with smiley faces on the receipt, to the server calling my name for my order; PERFECT! When we finished placing my order (NOT at the new Kiosk) with the manager. I sat my kids down at a clean table. Now at most locations they are not swift with cleaning the table so this was a first for us. When our order was finished one of the cleaners came to our table and gave us a FREE beverage. Yes I said FREE because he noticed that the kids had one cup and I only had water. WOW, who does that? Shack Shake at this location does. I believe his name is George..he has a kind heart, nice smile and is extremely polite. We happened to come to this location because I was driving by and the kids were hungry. Cashless shake shack near astor place! I actually do enjoy ordering from the machines here as its quicker and more efficient to me. There are also employees standing next to the machines, ready to help you out. Just make sure to wash your hands after touching the machine, before you eat LOL Went at an off hour I think around 3-4, it was not that busy. Ordered, and food was ready in about 5-10 minutes? Grabbed my food and went to sit down. It took me about 15 minutes to finish my meal, but in those 15 minutes I was asked if everything was ok by the employees like 3 times. LOL. felt like I was dining in a restaurant. It's good but I feel like one time is enough as it felt a bit excessive to me. Super kind employees though. The staff here were very attentive. Note: this location is card only and they have mobile kiosks to order. I had forgotten they were one of the kiosk-only Shacks, but the ordering process went rather smoothly and wasn't that different from ordering on the app. The staff on the floor were pretty nice and friendly, but the kitchen seemed a little disorganized and couldn't find our order for a bit. We got the Shell Game concrete with vanilla custard, cannoli shell, cherries, pistachios, and chocolate chunks, and it was good, other than the chocolate, which came in massive frozen chunks that were so hard they could break your teeth. It was strange that the chocolate wasn't broken up like ingredients usually are in the concretes, and it made it a little bit hard to eat, so we probably wouldn't get that again. Coming into this Shake Shack, my boyfriend and I were astounded to see such a clean scene, automated machines to help you order, and staff with such friendly smiles. Based off the 7 seconds of my first impression, Shake Shack is already way ahead of the fast food game. What's even better is just in case you are not feeling up with the technological times, there is a cashier to take your order at the center if you wish. Even at the busy time of 12PM on a Friday, there were still some seats for us to relax and eat our wonderful lunch. I ended up ordering the SmokeShack burger, which has a single beef patty, cheese, bacon, pepper, and their own special sauce. More extreme than its classic counterpart, the ShackBurger, it was very savory but also somewhat a little too oily for my taste. The SmokeShack Burger also has a kick of spice from their special sauce and cherry peppers garnished over the cheese and bacon. Definitely a great choice especially if you are all about having lots of meat. My boyfriend ordered the classic ShackBurger, which is basically your good ol' fashioned burger. The lettuce and tomatoes offset the natural oiliness of the burger, but it wasn't to the point of taking away the juiciness of the patty. The buns were also very soft and fluffy in the middle, but toasted well on the rims to maintain the bun's shape. Bathrooms are also very clean here - there are 2 gender neutral bathrooms which are well-maintained. It's always a plus in my book seeing clean public restrooms in New York. Overall this Shake Shack is performing wonderfully in its services of food, maintaining its own restaurant, and clean bathrooms. 1/1/18 My first Shake Shack! You know, every picture I've seen of a Shake Shack burger makes the patty look super charred, pretty much black. So I was totally expecting to dislike the burgers. I really wanted to go to the original place but we just couldn't make it there so ended up at one of the newer restaurants. Well, now I don't know what to think... The burger we had definitely did not look like pictures I've seen of others. It was cooked normally--in fact, I would say not charred at all! From the exterior the meat just looks like In N Out's but much wider and a tad thicker... ...In N Out vs Shake Shack = ?....... sigh.... it's close. Both have pluses and minuses... 1. ShackBurger $5.69: Pretty good... 1a. Meat: So, as I said, the patty is wider and thicker than INO's. In fact, it's so wide it kinda sticks out from the bun, and that's AWESOME. In a world where the vast majority of burger places, at fast food or even gourmet restaurants, it is so awesome to see a "cheaper" burger finally have the correct meat to bread ratio! Now, the meat itself I think is less juicy than In N Out's, but honestly, both are overcooked. However, I don't consider this a sin since you can't get a medium-cooked burger at any fast food restaurant anyway, so whatever. (The exception being Eat On Monday in Mountain View / San Jose, CA, which actually cooks their meat medium or medium-rare and juice as all hell!) But yeah, Shake Shack's is definitely less juicy than INO's though it's still tasty. Winner =........ Shack Shack by just a tad 1b. Bread: Clearly Shake Shack is the winner here. They use some kind of custom bread that I've never had before, at any restaurant or bakery or store. Super soft and moist, yet they hold their shape without collapsing or getting mushy. Also, they're cut hotdog-style, meaning they're hinged at the end, which also helps the less talented hold in all the burger stuffs. INO's is just a standard bun. Winner = Shack Shack by a crap load 1c. Cheese: Both pretty similar here. Both use American Cheese, and the cheese generously covers the whole patty. Winner = tie 1d. Sauce: Honestly, I don't even remember the sauce in Shack Shack's cause everything else was so overflowing and flavorful. Guess that's a good thing. INO's is like a thousand island type dressing. Winner = not sure 1e. Vegetables: I was never a fan of INO's vegetables, which tend to be a big lump. Shake Shack's a beautiful piece of lettuce (honestly... very pretty, as you can see in the pics), and a couple slices of tomatoes. Winner = Shake Shack ..................... sigh................ GRAND WINNER = SHAKE SHACK! (disclaimer--I still think this burger is not really a normal Shake Shack burger since the patty totally does not look like the super charred ones I've seen... so I still need to try more) 8/10 2. Shack Stack $10.49: Pretty much the same as the standard burger but added a big piece of fried portobello mushroom. I liked the idea, but the mushroom in mine was REALLY REALLY REALLY tough. Like I wanted to just bite a little and give the rest to my gf to try, but it was impossible. More tough than beef jerky, by a lot. Also, there's a $5 difference for that one piece of mushroom. I say skip this. 4/10 3. Fries $2.99: Done. Best fries of any fast food restaurant. Period. The outside is super crunchy (even crunchier than INO Very Well Done, which I always ask for) without being even burnt in the slightest. The crinkles made for even more awesome surface area to crisp! The inside is soft, but alas... not perfect as it is dry in the middle. 10/10 4. Strawberry Shake + Whipped Cream = $5.79: I would say it's halfway between a fast food shake and a handmade shake in taste and texture. There are no fresh strawberries. 6/10 5. Strawberry Mint Lemonade, Large $3.15: Alright, I'm super impressed by their lemonades, this fancy version and their normal one. The lemon flavor tastes fresh and intense. Perfect sweetness. And the strawberry totally tastes fresh, and not synthetic like many other places. And again, oh god is that lemon flavor strong! Love it. Might be the best lemonade I've ever had at any restaurant, cheap or expensive. 10/10 It should be stated though that the cashiers at most In N Out's are really nice, and most just can't compare. Shake Shack is embracing the future as they see it, and you actually place your entire order on a computer screen and only pay at the cashier, who isn't as nice as INO's either. I tried this Shake Shack of the future recently. All ordering is done on kiosks, though there are human employees there to make the food, give it to you, clean up, etc. I guess I'm good with this system because in the past, I haven't gotten the friendliest service from people taking my order and ringing me up, though it always makes me a teeny bit nervous when human service jobs are taken over by kiosks. The food is as good as always, and I realized thanks to the kiosk that I could actually add things to my burger, like pickles and onions, which I never thought to request in the past. I decided to indulge in a seasonal shake, the frozen cocoa, which I regretted immensely because it was waaaaay too sweet and basically a chocolate shake with chocolate chips and a chocolate marshmallow on top of whipped cream. It was definitely EXTRA and I wouldn't order that again, but it made for a cute photo op at least. It's a great location, clean, lots of indoor seating, and the food is delicious, as everyone knows. And no line for lunch on a Saturday, so I'm a fan for sure. read more

Yuuuuuuum. I've never had a bad sandwich or burger at Shake Shack and this visit was no exception. Got the fried chicken sandwich and a side of fries ($10.76 total) and it was deeeeeelicious! Chicken was super juicy, buns were nice and soft, fries were crispy. What more can you ask for? The restaurant was also clean and there were self-serve machines you order from, but those are just the cherry on top. Customer service is also great and an employee actually walks around and throws out your garbage for you (something I find totally unnecessary, for the record). came here around 10pm on a Saturday night. It was pretty crowded from Santa Con, but I was able to get my food in about 5 mins after ordering. Food wise, ive had the best shack shake fries here. it was perfectly crispy outside without being hard or burnt. The inside of the fries was also fluffy. The meat in the burger was also excellent. It had a good meat to fat ratio. It was juicy and charred well. I love that beef juice melting in my mouth. Hands down this was one of the best tasting beef from a fast food joint. Bun was always the weak link at Shake Shack, it was melted and wet. Not very appealing. The original location at the park did the bun better. Unlike other Shake Shacks, this is a newer location where you can only order off tablets and pay with credit card. So if you have cash, you're out of luck. First to address the negative review--there is a choice for JUST angus burger, nothing else, which is $4.99, if that's what he wanted (it's further down on the menu, yes this is a marketing tactic but also many companies do this.) I used to live five minutes away from this Shake Shack, which is both a blessing and a curse. They have great food here, and arguably the best service out of all of the burger joints out there. The only thing that makes me hate coming here is waiting for the food; I've waited upwards of 20 minutes multiple times, and since there are usually no seats available, waiting while standing made me feel more hangry than I should have. The new location is slick and corporate looking, befitting its place in the Astor Place Death Star. Feels a bit cold and impersonal. They could use a little flair. There's an ordering area, the counter where people linger waiting for their food, and limited seating. Annoying that there's so many four tops / booths and not much space for individual diners to sit. Bathrooms are quite clean. Ordering was pretty quick, but I waited a solid 10-15 minutes for the burger; it doesn't seem like the new system has sped things up too much. Once I got my burger (standard one-patty cheeseburger) and managed to swoop in on a table, I devoured it pretty quickly. It's a good burger with a decent size to it. The meat seems better than fast food, but sub restaurant quality. It hit the spot, though I feel like I've been more enthusiastic about Shack burgers in the past. They are cooked properly but just feel like they have been sitting and not hot off the grill or fryer. This review is SOLEY based on this location of the Shake Shack food chain. First off, I gotta be happy because this Shake Shack is literally a couple of blocks away from my apt. I was excited that it opened right away because I saw it being built. What's great is the service you get from the workers who are guiding people to the CASHLESS kiosks and also cleaning tables and presenting you with your order. It's an easy system to use - just add the items you want and customize it to your liking. Insert your credit card chip, and input your number so they can text you when your order is ready and input an email if you want a receipt. The food? C'mon! It's Shake Shack! The food was great! Do not order from this restaurant during lockdown. I placed a $30 order for two burgers, fries, shack sauce and a coke. Initially I thought the missing shack sauce was the extent of my issue.
