Spoiler: Culver's is better and half the price. Every time I drive by it in the third ward, I think about trying Shake Shack. I've been to Shake Shack in Orlando on a previous location, but I can't remember if I liked it, all I remember is it seemed expensive for what I got. Tonight I finally tried the Milwaukee location. Upon walking in, I remembered why I thought it was so expensive. The menu prices are pretty hefty for a chain burger joint. I spent over $30 for two people to eat. For fast food, not worth it. I ended up ordering a double smokehouse cheeseburger. The meat was okay. The bacon was incredibly greasy. And the bun was more wet than anything. Definitely NOT the toasted bun I prefer. I ate it, but it was just alright. However, now that's it's been a few hours, my stomach hasn't stopped churning. So that's not great, and I probably won't be getting a burger from here again. Fries were alright as well, nothing special. I also ordered a cookies and cream shake. That was very thick and good. I would get that again. In the end, I will stick to going to Culver's when I crave a fast food burger. Or, if I'm in the driving mood, Kopps is a better option as well. I'll only spend half as much and I won't feel sick the rest of the day. read more

MmmmMMmmm. Originally tried this in NY so was super happy to see we got one in MKE. Their burgers are so juicy with the perfect meat to cheese ratio. Their ShackSauce takes it up a notch from your ordinary burger. I found myself trying to think of reasons to go downtown just to be able to swing by and pick me up a burger from here (went 3 times in 1 week...oops!). I ate at this shake shack twice during a recent business trip. I was excited to try it, but was definitely underwhelmed. It's located on a busy street in the 3rd Ward, so it's a good location. The interior has plenty of seating. You order at the counter, then wait for your food to come up. The menu has several options. I ordered a burger and cheese fries as well as a small soda the first day. The cheese fries were only OK. I felt like the fries had no seasoning and the cheese was too salty so it just wasn't balanced. I also felt like the texture was off; they weren't crispy even on those that didn't have cheese. The burger was good. Nice and juicy, and you can customize what they put on it if you ask. The drink was fine but too expensive ($2.29 for about 12 oz) for the size and as far as I am aware they don't provide you with refills. The second day I ordered a burger and a shake. The burger was good again, so that's consistent. The shake tasted good, but very small considering how expensive it was ($4.59). It was basically in a small cup/dish (probably 6-8 oz), like the kind you'd get at a ice cream shop, only it was for a shake. Overall, overrated and I wouldn't go out of my way to return. read more

As a born and raised Wisconsinite, I was hesitant to betray my roots (Culver's), but the neon green sign and prospect of shakes and fries lured us in. We were on the hunt for a post-dinner treat, and ice cream always seems to find its way. We got the pie-oh-my mixer and an order of fries to compare, and I must say, we were not disappointed. The pie-oh-my-mixer is an East coast concrete mixer, and I loved that Shake Shack partnered with a local bakery to make this sweet concoction available. I am partial to frozen custard, but I must admit how pleasantly surprised how sweet, creamy, and savory this was. Second up, fries with a side of cheese. They were crinkle cut, super fluffy on the inside, and hot and crispy on the outside. I would die a happy woman if every side of fries came out this good (I'm sorry, Culver's). On top of that, the inside was clean and modern, and service was lovely. Our cashier was sosososo friendly despite my indecision. I would come back again in a heartbeat for another shake or fries, but maybe the sequel will include trying a burger too! read more

If I could give this place a 3.5 star rating I would. Came here for a quick bite on a Wednesday night with the hubby. He has been here before and was telling me how good the burgers were and we just had to come here so tonight we dined in. First off, the place is super cool and modern and every member of the staff we came in contact with was really friendly. It's the type of place where you walk in the door and go straight up to the counter to order. It's like a lot of other fast food restaurants but with no drive through and they sell beer and wine. So imagine Panera with burgers instead of paninis and add beer lol. If you dine in you get a buzzer to bring to your table and when the food is ready you go up and get your food. (Again, like Panera.) We both ordered the SmokeShack burger, I got the single and he got the double. Had to order fries separately. The burger itself was decent, it's pressed so it's real thin. The ShackSauce is okay. It was interesting with the chopped cherry peppers on it. It's definitely a different burger- which should make it intriguing- but it was just okay in my opinion. Maybe all of the hype around the restaurant got to me and I couldn't be objective with the burger. I guess for the price I'd rather go to Culver's. My main issue is that for the two of us they put our burgers on the same tray and in some tiny wrapper. I'm all for saving the environment and reducing waste, but for someone who's eating in how about either giving me a wrapper for my burger that's big enough to eat over or give me a plate or basket? The chopped cherry peppers on the burger were pretty messy and some of the oil got on my skirt. I guess that is my fault, but I had nothing to anchor me to the table to make me want to eat over it. The fries we ordered were exactly what I expected them to be- crinkle cut and fried. It's hard to say if I would come back in the future. The location is super cool and it's right on Water Street. But if I keep going a few blocks south I get over by Stack'd Burger Bar or even Merriment Social. If I'm looking for a burger in this area and am wanting a sit down place I might just go to one of those places, but if I'm looking for something quick I might try here again. I was incredibly excited when I heard that Shake Shack--one of my favorite places to hit up when I travel to Vegas or NYC--was making its Milwaukee debut. Unfortunately the reality has been lacking. The food is still great, from the Salted Caramel shakes to the burgers and chicken sandwich (really it's the Shack's secret weapon). What really detracts from the experience is the wildly inconsistent service and prices that make me feel as though I'm back in Vegas. First, the service. Your counter person can either be the kind of person that gets Republicans worked up about paying fast food staff $15 per hour or an incredibly friendly and helpful worker. If they were all crabby or all friendly I could adjust my expectations accordingly, but these wild swings make for a frustrating experience. Speaking of service, what's the deal with hitting the pager that lets me know my food is ready and then having me stand at the counter for five minutes while everyone ignores me? And it's not just the counter where that occurs, the wait is as bad--if not worse--when you order using the app. I should be excited for the culinary adventure to come, not annoyed that my time is being wasted. Last complaint on this topic: Why is it assumed that app orders are to go? You advertise skipping the line, why waste the paper bag when I'm going to go sit at a table? Prices. Maybe the Third Ward wasn't the best place for Milwaukee's first Shack, given what they are charging, they should upgrade the name at least to Shake Mansion. Final rant: I really liked trivia at this location, but they ended it as quickly as it began, and I don't think they did much--if any--promotion to get folks interested. The staff was very friendly, but they messed up a lot of people's orders I noticed like forgot to put some toppings on the burgers. They forgot one of our hot dog orders and both burgers were missing at least one topping. They were very apologetic and quick to correct it once told but it seemed like a common occurrence. I've been here twice and both times with different employees customer service was weak. This last visit something was off with the taste of the Coke Zero. I made a comment about it. I struggled with this rating. The food I've had at Shake Shack has been quite tasty. However, the rest of the experience has been problematic at times. First off, the food. I've gotten the chicken sandwich most times I've gone, and it's stellar. If you're so inclined, the hot chicken variation is even better (it might be a limited time offer, so be warned). The french fries are solid albeit unspectacular. And the last time I went, I finally tried a titular shake. It was excellent. The service and rest of the experience is spotty at best. Most of the staff is reasonably friendly, but I'd say at least half of the time I've been there, there's been some issue. First off, most of the time my buzzer has gone off that my food is ready, I've gone up to the counter and waited...and waited. If you let the customer know the food's ready, it should be ready. Secondly, they always seem to be out of something. A couple times, the advertised cold brew coffee is out of stock. The last time I went, my wife and I both ordered beers off the meny that they didn't have. I'd say that the chicken sandwich is worth checking out. But don't expect to be wowed by the whole experience. And the prices are not great for what's a couple notches above fast food. read more

It's not as if anything is ever a surprise here. I'm a New Yorker where Shake Shack is a pretty busy place. The burgers are decent albeit cooked well done, a sin to any burger aficionado. I'm always suspicious of s burger joint that doesn't cook it's own fries and even more suspicious of a place that has fries sitting under a heat lamp. They will cook your fries to order though. This review is all over the place but in a nut shell Shake Shack a good place to eat decent fast food. Overall, service is fast, and you don't have to wait in lines like they do in NYC so that's a plus. The food does always taste good though and my meal of burger, fries, and a milkshake rang up to $13.34. I could have spent half that much at the drive thru at McDonalds and i wouldn't have had to get my fat ass out of the car. Eat here and ask fir fresh fries. read more

My first and probably only visit to Shake Shack was last night with my husband and two friends post-dinner. We waited in line, but due to the chaos behind the cashier, we didn't know she was ready to take our order until she was very clearly annoyed with us. I was immediately disappointed that a place called SHAKE Shack didn't offer more flavors of shakes. Honestly, they didn't offer much more than a fast food chain like McDonald's. We ordered two shakes: One chocolate, one peanut butter. We sat down with our two tokens that vibrate when your order is ready. After 15 or so minutes, my shake was ready. A little more of a wait than I would like, especially since the shake arrived a little melted, but I digress. My friend's shake was still in the works as I finished mine. 35 minutes after we placed our orders, my friend went to the counter only to find a shake melting as it sat there. He asked if it was for him and received a quick "yup". The token had never vibrated, nor had the name they took down been called. By that point, the shake had mostly liquified. As for taste, the shakes weren't much different than any other restaurant's shakes, and definitely weren't worth the wait. Definitely disappointing. Hoping others have a better experience. read more

We decided to try Shake Shack for dinner since we were in the area to see a performance at the Marcus Center. Parking was kind of a challenge, so we had to park a few blocks away. Pretty pricey for a fast food meal, if you ask me. It was a Friday night, pretty busy, so seating was hard to find (maybe have one save a table while the other orders?). I was super excited about the arrival of Shake Shack to Milwaukee. I anxiously awaited its opening for months! As far as fast food burgers go, it's definitely one of the better chains out there, but my California roots will always prefer In-n-Out. Overall, the quality of the burger is similar. They both have secret sauce, and you can choose to have single or double patties. You will have to wait for your burger as it is thankfully made to order. The similarities end there: The Shake Shack menu features more items to choose from, including chicken and portabello mushroom as your "patty" as well as more toppings. They have delicious shakes. But most importantly, they have abita draft root beer! I'm never been a fan of krinkle cut fries, but that's all you have here. With all this freedom to customize comes a higher price tag. I have been avoiding coming to Shake Shake for 2 reasons, the place isn't the best value and the parking is a bit tight. The family was over after Christmas and my son kept talking about the shakes, so I said what the heck, let's go for a family time off lunch. Now our bill was $55.00, that much I expected. I had programmed my mind to think the actual meal would be just average. I do have to admit the food was good, I ordered the double Shack Burger, fries and a chocolate shake. The burger was some of the best beef I've ever eaten, with Culver's coming a close 2nd. The fries were light and crispy and the Shake was very good. My wife ordered the single hamburger, which was good and a mushroom burger to go. The burgers were seasoned nicely and fresh tasting. The fries were on the dry side. The decor is new, its fresh and its hip. What else? Its downtown so parking is something you have to deal with as did . I wanted to try the chicken and maybe a shake but the shake itself was 7 or 8 dollars. Not this time chief. The speed in which the food came out was good. I stopped in on a Thursday around noon and it took about 12 minutes tops. That wasn't too bad of a wait. I don't think I would stop in again. The prices were so high I cant see myself paying that much money for fast food. I was standing in line with my sons and one of the workers was cursing up a storm and joking with a crew member. I was thinking "man I wish she would stop talking like this she could lose her job". A couple of N**** Words here and there a few giggles and my food was ready. I was Underwhelmed. Ordered the cheeseburger and cheese fries to go...everything is sold separately, don't expect a "meal deal." The seasoning on the burger reminded me of Lawry's Seasoned Salt, and it was a small size for the price. The best part of the whole meal, was honestly the cheese sauce that came with my fries. I would come back if I were in the mood for cheese fries...very much a "comfort food" taste; thick and hearty--the cheese tasted like it could be made into a beer cheese soup! The four of us came for the soft opening. I sincerely hope it's not going to be packed like this all the time! I had seen video of the New York location having huge lines out the door all the time. I have never seen so many employees in one hamburger kitchen. Except for Kopp"s maybe. We came around 5:45PM and were in line until 6:05 PM. We waited about 20 minutes for our food. Luckily I spotted my friends Lisa, Kimmy, and Keaunis and they let us have their table. Otherwise there was no seating available. One of the chairs was missing so my youngest sat on a stool while we all had seats. Having a few extra seats Is something the restaurant should work on. There were larger tables with 8-10 people seated. Our table which should have had four chairs only had three. Seating is something relevant to the business as I had taken a photo of it. I didn't know you could order over the allotted amount and stuck with the double Smoke Shack which was a double cheeseburger with a special sauce and diced cherry tomatoes and bacon (the smokey part) . It reminded me a bit of a Culver's burger. The meat tasted delicious! All of the cherry peppers were at the back of the burger as they serve their burgers on their side stacked in a box. We got it to go because we didn't know if we could find seats. The fries again were reminiscent of Culver's crinkle cut fries with some cheese sauce on the side. Both my girls got the shroom burger. My oldest was surprised to see it breaded. She's a vegetarian and prefers to keep it on the healthier side. It was deep fried. The concrete mixer was very good and I wanted badly to try their shakes. Well there is always next time! So all in all I it was pretty darn good. Prices were what you would expect to pay for a gourmet burger. The staff was friendly but I wish they would have taken the time to explain the menu choices to my hubby when he had questions. Yay!!!! MKE finally has its own Shake Shack!! I've been to Shake Shacks in Chicago and although this is similar, they don't compare! Please note that I, like other Yelpers, went to the soft Friends and Family opening and was given free lunch. My guest was also given a free lunch but we were not compensated. The review is my honest opinion of the lunch, regardless of who paid for the lunch. The main menu items are the same as other locations - thank goodness - but this location has a nice local twist on dessert items. It was so nice to see items like burgers, shakes and fries remaining the same since they're tried and true but the MKE Shake Shake brought in different Milwaukee businesses for awesome collaborations!! I saw names like Rocket Baby and Honey Pie and was thrilled!! The Shack Attack concrete is a salted caramel custard with Rocket Baby's brownie in it so obviously I had to try. Although I'm not a chocolate fan, I truly enjoyed the concrete. It was served in a small sundae cup. Any more than that and I would have had to roll out of that restaurant. The burgers are your typical custard stand burger with a nice, upscale twist. The sauce is to die for. It's wonderful!!!! So tasty, gooey and delicious. The burgers have a smaller footprint but are very filling. They are served in wax pockets and you'll need to keep them in said pocket to keep grease and cheese from getting all over your work or going out clothes!!! The crinkle cut fries are wonderful! Fantastically simple. Some crunchy fries, some floppy...a perfect mix of all of them. The staff was out of this world. Everyone was incredibly helpful, accommodating and friendly! Other guests had never tried Shake Shack and the cashiers were incredibly helpful in assisting guests make a decision! Decisions are hard!! You can tell they have great support and management because for a soft opening, this went smoothly! Very impressed. Bathrooms are huge!!! Sink was a little messy and unkept but it was hit with a ton of people! Nothing I didn't expect!! We had to schedule a time to arrive to help traffic flow and I'm glad we arrived early. This place will be quite a hit for quite a while. Can't wait for more of them to pop up! Suggestions on what to order: order the single shack burger. You can't go wrong. Crinkle cut fries are the bomb. Lemonade = ummm YES! Shakes are great but I highly recommend the Shack Attack if you decide to throw your calorie count out of the window!!! Triple yum! read more

I tried Shake Shack for the first time ever at their soft opening and was impressed. They had a ton of staff to make sure everything went smoothly and it did. Best of all, I loved their food. I got the SmokeShack burger and salted caramel brownie concrete and both were fantastic. I'll be back to try more things. I second Stephanie H.'s suggestion of wrapping the to-go orders a little more so they stay warmer. Maybe there is a happy medium of wrapping them up and cutting down on waste. read more

It was just a mint & Oreo Update: I was asked to review again after our last visit. For 4 of us it cost $53.52. We got 2 orders of chicken bites, 2 Shake Shack burgers (no Shack sauce), fries, 3 shakes, and a float. We ordered 4 fries but should have just had 2. We threw half of them away (they were good, just large amount in one order). The burgers were ok but the buns got soggy. The kids didn't like the chicken & didn't finish. If you like Chick-Fil-a, they're very similar. The atmosphere was great & service was friendly. read more

Surprisingly good, especially since they do have a portabella burger (the 'Shroom). It does come with two types of cheese, so not vegan-friendly. The 'Shroom is the option for vegetarians and it is pretty tasty. The fries are crisp and good as well. They have some beers on tap, including Spotted Cow. You order first, then they give you a buzzing gadget that let you know when your order is ready for pick-up. The staff is nice and the place is usually quite busy and popular. read more

It's a delicious crispy chicken sandwich and the burger is always good...everything is good but it's not life changing and price wise - it's on the higher end of the scale for a quick service restaurant. The main reason for only 3 stars is the service or the lack of customer service. If you ask for something on the side; you're likely not going to get it and will have to go back up to the counter. We ordered 2 sodas and they gave us 4. Doors didn't open until after 11am (late) and we were some of the first people through the door but there were food crumbs and dust on things...despite being open for about 10min - it felt like it was the end of a long shift and the staff was annoyed that we were there. I went to a soft opening of this new location downtown and it was a good time. To be fair we got our meals for free so that we could try out the new location. I got their Smokeshack burger with cheese fries and my girlfriend got the Chilliburger with the bacon cheese fries. We also got a Shack Attack which was a chocolate custard with fudge, truffle cookie dough and dark chocolate in it. When we first got there, there was a line out the door so I was a bit worried. They did get through the line really quickly though and the staff was super friendly. The burgers were really good and even cooked a little under the way I like. I think the Smokeshack was my favorite of the two. The fry type they have I really liked too, not too thin as well as crispy. We decided on the shack attack since it had the name sake of the restaurant, it was good but a little heavy. Still to be expected with the ingredient list. I did really like the food and the service was great, a nice addition to the downtown area. It is a bit on the pricier side, but with it being downtown it makes sense and you get a great product. read more

Full disclosure I was a guest at the Friends and Family night where food was free up to $15. Now that I've gotten that out of the way... My brother and I (burger aficionados that we are) spent about ten minutes circling the blocks nearby for parking and then braved the 15-20 minute line for food. We settled on ordering a shack stack (him), single smoke shack (me), fries, cheese fries and a single drink. We utilized all but a few cents of the $30 budget allotted. Before even tasting the food my impression was this is EXPENSIVE fast food. We can get in and out at Culver's for closer to $20 and both have a beverage. Food came fairly quickly. Fries were crispy, the cheese sauce tasted like straight velveeta. I imagine that's probably a pro for some, I wasn't a huge fan. My burger, on the other hand, was delicious- not too greasy and the bacon actually looked like bacon, which is pretty rare in fast food. Our favorite spot on our NYC trip a few years ago and regular stop when in downtown CHI, we were counting down the days until the MKE location opened. And thanks to #yelpelite we were invited to a complimentary experience at Milwaukee's hottest new spot in the 3rd Ward, two days before they opened. This would mark spot #19a of 21 on our Milwaukee Burger Tour! I had the double SmokeShack ($9.79, smoked Niman ranch bacon, cheese, chopped cherry peppers, shack sauce) and my son had a double Shackburger ($8.29, lettuce, cheese, shack sauce). The bun, perfect, possibly the best non-pretzel bun we've had, portion, softness and taste. The back of the bun isn't cut, holding the entire burger together until the last bite. The meat, juicy, flavorful; my son says mmmmmmmmm, delish. Fries were pretty plain, crinkle cut, thick, but they were fried to the perfect crisp and still soft inside, much better than expected. Great job on the soft opening! The food was just as good as I remember it in Chicago! Shack Stack burger is always my favorite burger here. The deep fried stuffed mushroom is just delicious. I always enjoy the cheese fries. It may be my favorite item on the whole menu. Wish you the best of luck. The service was great and friendly. Egh. Don't believe the hype. I've heard a lot of good people saying a lot of good things about Shake Shack. Apparently, it's where the cool kids go to eat. So you can imagine my expectations. And my experience, ...egh. Whatevs. No big deal. Culver's has better fries and burgers. Yeah, go to Culver's instead. And I don't really like Culver's that much, so let sink in. I got their smallest burger, cheese fries and a chocolate shake. Serving sizes are smaller than your typical restaurant sizes. And, get this, Shake Shack's prices aren't in line with their sizes. Now, I appreciated the modest serving sizes for my waistline. But, an order of cheese fries, a small cheeseburger and a chocolate shake cost me a little more than $15. Nah. Atleast Culver's has a drive thru for the impending Wisconsin winter. Also, let's talk for a minute about the "cheese" for the cheese fries. It should be melty and gooey. Instead, it was weird, over processed, awkwardly congealed and a gnarly orange color. Blasphemy. Don't mess with cheese and cheese fries. The atmosphere of the restaurant was unexpected. There is somewhat of a sports bar vibe with multiple TV's visible from every angle of seating and moderately loud music playing. I'm not a fan of coerced or captive tv watching. I'm an introvert that was here to eat my feelings in relative peace and quiet; I found myself rushing my meal because the environment was so loud. Well, too loud for me on this day. Came to soft opening and the staff handled the packed crowd well. These aren't fast food burgers (processed, frozen circular disc) these are real patties of meat. The chili cheese fries were delicious along with my salted caramel shake. Only down fall is that I personally don't like processed American like cheese on my burger, other than that no complaints here. Hope they keep up the great service and quality food. read more

UPDATE: I went back, and had fewer problems getting my order this time. And the food is still delicious. I am raising my review to 4 stars for the improvement. Old review: They have to get their order pick up system fixed. I visited twice in a week because the food was good, but both times the little pagers weren't functioning. The first time, we were there for a work lunch and sat forever waiting for the pager to go off. When one of us went to the counter, we found out they weren't working. But ridiculously the staff continued giving out the pagers. The second time I went there with a young child. I was handed a pager and it went off. When I got to the counter my food wasn't ready I asked why and the person behind the counter mumbled something that I couldn't hear. I asked again she mumbled again. It was very frustrating to try and manage both a small child and try to figure out where my order was. My experience trying to just get my food here was so frustrating I don't know that I'm going to return. However, I did really love the cheeseburger I had. The fries were hot and fresh. My daughter got a chocolate shake. (They don't have kids' sizes though). The shake was good, but mildly salty. I think I liked it more than she did I think. I also liked the freely available water and condiments. The restaurant was clean. I hope that they work out the quirks so I can come back! read more

The Shake Shack brings a custard style quick serve restaurant to the Third Ward. I was their for their soft opening and was fairly impressed. The decor is up to date and the layout efficient with both individual tables and shared high top seating. The menu features burgers, hot dogs, fries and chili along with shakes. I had the Chicago style dog and it was delicious - the dog was split and grilled for great flavor. My friend had the smoked bacon burger and it was also pretty darn good. Her chocolate shake was delicious as well. The only downside was the cheese fries. The fries were good - crisp krinkle cut - but the cheese sauce was a very odd taste and weird consistency. I would steer clear of it. read more
