Acai Bowls!! That is one kind of healthy food that I do not see as a dessert. To me, they are like having a healthy meal. On a recent trip, my wife was craving an Acai Bowl. After browsing through Yelp, she and her soul sister found Shake Smart close by. They are located on the campus of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Good to know that the college students can get some healthy food at Shake Smart. They do make some really good acai bowls. Both my wife and I were satisfied with our customized acai bowls. I ordered the flavor of the month: Red, white & Blue (Strawberries bananas blueberries with pomegranate juice & vanilla protein powder). Blended perfectly, very refreshing, delicious. Tasted like an açaí shake. My guest had the Peanut butter banana chocolate Açaí bowl, good as well. Recommend for a healthy refreshment. Did not realize that this was inside the Cal Poly campus till GPS brought me here. It is hard to get there, you have to park and then walk to it. Makes sense if you are only catering to the students. They have a cool system, you order on the iPad and pay at the register. The raw peanut butter açaí bowl was good but very small, it is more of a snack than a meal. I don't get Shake Smart very often because there is usually a line that is way too long. And actually, it's a little confusing because you make your order first on the iPad and then get in line to pay. I can see the benefits of this system but it was just a little confusing at first. I usually order an acai bowl because I think it is way more worth it than to order a smoothie and the bowls are usually a hit or miss. I have had an excellent pb&a and other times, I have had a very watery one. It really depends on the person making it and of course, you can't control that. I would come back if I was really feeling like an acai bowl and didn't want to drive off campus. read more

After transferring to Cal Poly I was so excited to see a protein smoothie shop on campus right outside the rec center. After trying it for the first time, I was very impressed with the quality of the product. They use Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey protein which is my preferred high quality protein supplement. I got to customize my shake with almond butter instead of peanut butter and added spinach for extra nutrients. It tasted amazing! I can definitely say I will be a frequent flyer at Shake Smart! read more

Shake Smart is FAKE HEALTHY, a marketing trick. I am a staff member at Cal Poly and I don't eat sugar so I was excited to see the health claim posted that said "no added sugar" while walking buy. I finally made it over there to try it out and ordered an acai bowl. It regularly comes with granola which has added sugar. I was easily able to sub this for something else like chia seeds but how many people order this thinking it's "healthy". If you get it with the granola, you've just de-healthified it. I thought it came with cacao nibs, normally a sugar-free product, but when it came, it was little chocolate pieces. Very sugary. The smoothie tastes very sweet so I was left wondering if they use the kind of peanut butter that has added sugar. I ate the banana and some of the smoothie with chia seeds and tossed the rest out. I now have a headache. Not only will I not be back but I'm disappointed that there are so few healthy options on campus for Cal Poly students (not to mention us staff). And the options that seem healthy are actually just marketed as such but are anything but. This is especially tough for students who are trying to figure out their own healthy eating habits as they enter adulthood. Marketing claims of health are prevalent and can be hard to ignore, especially for those who have not yet become aware that food companies are in the business of making money, and adding a health claim can often bring in more sales revenue. Gold Standard Whey protein powder is made with "Natural and artificial flavors," yikes. ""The term artificial flavor or artificial flavoring means any substance, the function of which is to impart flavor, which is not derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof." - FDA I'm not going to say that all artificial flavors are bad because there aren't enough studies to say, but with the wealth of delicious flavors from regular ol' foods made by nature that already exist, why experiment with our health by adding artificial ones? read more

Shake smart is one of the very few places that I go to eat on campus and I enjoy it a lot. However, it's hard to go back to support because of multiple things: 1. You get ripped off sometimes. Sometimes I get a bowl and it's barley filled. It has 3 banana slices in it and half a scoop of açaí with some granola sprinkled. Usually it should take up at least half the bowl but sometimes I only get a quarter of the bowl. It's usually when they are in a rush and are running low on supplies but if that is the case, then don't serve me! I am a college student, so every dollar counts. Also, the shake smart app scan thing never works! It seems that every other time I go, the scanner for the app is broken. I think they just don't want you to get rewards. 2. Long wait. There have been times where I have waited for 28min and there was only one other person there. I kept looking inside to see what they were doing and they were cleaning for 28min. Then I got my bowl. Disappointing, especially since my raw açaí bowl, I feel, takes 2min to make and I was the only person there at one point. This hasn't happened once, but many many times. 3. And most importantly......Be careful, sometimes they steal your money! I got charged for 2 açaí bowls and I only ordered 1. It was only after I left that I realized it because they don't give you a receipt. I looked back at my transactions and she charged me for 2 bowls...are you kidding me? I really like their bowls, but with the non-consistency, long wait/lack of attention to the customer, and they charge you for things you didn't order...it's hard to come back to order at shake smart. Shake smart is a good option for healthy food on campus BUT they need to be more careful with dietary restrictions. Their bowls with dark chocolate NEED to say that it contains dairy. I ordered it and then found out it has dairy and i'm vegan. The lady working only responded with a snarky comment, no offer to remake my bowl.
