This place lived up to my expectations. The food was fantastic and the service even better. I never thought that seafood in a bag with sauce could be this good. The hosts were very friendly and informative on the phone. I love their fried soft shell crabs, flavored corn on the cob, and fries. The Cajun fried rice was pretty good, but too spicy for my palate. This for me is hands down the #1 seafood spot in the Hampton Roads area. In my opinion. I've been to Louisiana many times visiting the in-laws. And even there it's debates of who makes it right; New Orleans, Baton Rouge, or Lafayette. Who knows it's all in preference. And I say all that because although there maybe some people from Louisiana on here evaluating the restaurant nothing will ever be like Louisiana that's outside of Louisiana. And yes the wait can be a bit lone(came on a sunday at 5).but i was not in a hurry or starving so did not mind the wait..maybe a issue for some with small kids. I was here with Xerxes N. and Kristine M. on my first visit and we started out with a half dozen oysters raw on the half shell and calamari with cajun fries served with ketchup, marinara, and cocktail sauce. Both appetizers were a good start to the meal. The oysters are easy to eat and were plump and pretty neutral in flavor. Not much brininess or character but with the accompaniment of cocktail sauce and a squeeze of lemon it made them easy to slurp down! Most of the reviewers have covered the various seafood options you can choose for your bag so I won't post the list. Just know that the Shaking Sauce is where it's and for me at least the Medium spice level has just enough heat to be able to enjoy the entire meal which on my first visit was crab legs and HEAD ON shrimp with corn and potatoes. I emphasize "head on" for 2 reasons. First, if you'd like the "no heads" option it's an additional $4. Second, true shrimp eaters know there is an abundance of flavor in the heads of the shrimp when their cooked and when you suck on them it's almost like extracting concentrated shrimp butter in every taste! Every bite was delicious, the shrimp were cooked perfectly and were plump and the crab legs were tender and well seasoned. Extra butter is available to dip your crustaceans in upon request to maximize derriciousness! They even provide you with a bib and gloves to keep it clean throughout the inevitable seafood destruction you'll impart on your meal. The Hampton Roads is really stepping it up on their food game! One of my foodie friends aposted about The Shaking Crab opening in Virginia Beach, so of course we had to try it! I was actually surprised it wasn't busy on a Friday night, but we must have missed the dinner rush. My boyfriend and I were seated and given time to look over the menu. At first, I was confused our drinks came in regular paper cups, but then I realized that our hands get so dirty it doesn't matter. I ordered a pound of shrimp with the heads with corn in the shakin' sauce, Portuguese sausage, and Cajun fries. Our server then gave us some popcorn and a bucket to put our shrimp shells. The popcorn was okay and wasn't necessary, but I was so hungry I ate it anyways. Our food took roughly 15 minutes to come out all together. I wasn't too impressed with the fries. It could have used more Cajun seasoning. The flavor of the shrimp was so delicious! I would have liked to have more sauce and be a little thicker too. You also can ask for butter or garlic butter and lemon. The garlic butter is extra garlicky (is that a word?) but oh so good. The sausage would have been fine mixing in with the shrimp as well, but I know people have to take into account there are allergies. Our server was awesome and made us feel comfortable.
