Since I moved away, whenever I'm visiting Hampton Roads, I make it a point to have at least one nice dinner with my family. This go round, Steinhilber's came to mind because I hadn't been in over 10 years, when I attended a tasting event here. Steinhilber's has been around since 1939, and it's easy to see how they've stood the test of time. The restaurant sits in a gorgeous waterfront area in Virginia Beach, not too far from Town Center. The setting alone makes it feel like you're going somewhere special for dinner. We went on a Sunday, and there was a bit of a wait for an inside table. However, for our group of four, there was no wait at all to sit outside. The weather was beautiful, there was a nice breeze coming off the waterfront, and they have umbrellas that provide plenty of shade. Honestly, sitting outside ended up being a great choice. The staff here is also incredibly polite. You can tell they've been trained in fine dining etiquette, and everyone we interacted with was professional and attentive. They were very accommodating with every inquiry and request my family and I had throughout the evening. Now for the food! The thing I remembered most from my visit over 10 years ago was how delicious their fried shrimp were, so of course I had to order them again. I'm happy to report that they were just as delicious as I remembered! Crispy, flavorful, and even better paired with their signature "Steiny's Sauce." The twice baked potato was also delicious, and I added a side of creamed spinach, which was pretty good as well. All in all, Steinhilber's is a great restaurant with good food, gorgeous ambiance, and excellent customer service. There's a reason they've stood the test of time. My family and I really enjoyed our meals here, and I'm glad I finally made my way back after all these years! read more

I went to Steinhilber's on a Friday evening with one other person. It looked like it was going to rain, but thankfully it held off, so we were able to sit outside on the patio overlooking the water. It made for a really nice setting, and our service was excellent. I started with a margarita, which was a solid, good margarita, and the she-crab soup. The soup was excellent! It had nice chunks of lump crab throughout. It wasn't overloaded with crab, but there was definitely an appreciable amount, especially for a she-crab soup. For my entrée, I ordered the Beef Wellington with asparagus. Let me start with the asparagus because those things were HUGE and absolutely delicious. They were cooked just right, seasoned really well, and honestly one of the highlights of the entire meal. The beef in the Wellington was also cooked exactly how it should be. Unfortunately, the pastry surrounding it was a bit soggy, and that did take away from the dish. I know Beef Wellington can be a tricky balance because you're trying to get the beef and pastry right at the same time, but I've had versions where the pastry stayed beautifully crisp, and this one just didn't quite hit that mark. The texture was a little off because of it. That said, the beef itself was excellent, and the entire plate was presented beautifully. There were also a few potato chips on the plate, and those were SO good. Honestly, Steinhilber's could bag those up and sell them because I would absolutely buy them! There was a small salad on the side as well. It wasn't particularly flavorful or memorable, but it wasn't bad either and worked fine alongside everything else. Overall, we had an excellent dinner. There's definitely some room for improvement with the pastry on the Beef Wellington, but between the beautifully cooked beef, those incredible asparagus, the surprisingly delicious potato chips, the crab-filled she-crab soup, the waterfront patio, and great service, I still really enjoyed my meal. When my husband, aunt & uncle were alive we went at least once a week, The restaurant has exuded elegance throughout a long history in Virginia Beach. Founded in 1939 by Robert Steinhilber, its storied dining legacy is continued by his descendants. Located at the dead end of Thalia Road, the back of the restaurant has a gorgeous view of one of the tributaries at the end of the western branch of the historic Lynnhaven River. The restaurant is a wonderful place to bring visiting relatives and friends for an always fine dining experience. I wasn't surprised when my son made the choice of Steinhilbers for Mither's Day Brunch. What I was surprised by was that the restaurant, which offers only dinner, was actually serving a Mother's Day Brunch. When we arrived we were seated promptly at a table with a waterfront view. I mentioned to the hostess that throughout my Aunt's life, she had come every Friday. Timing was always when the restaurant opened, so she could get her favorite table. The hostess asked which had been her table. As I pointed it out, decades of family memories at the restaurant flooded through my mind. There was no doubt that we would order from the brunch menu. Only coffee had begun our day. We did begin with Oysters when we learned that they were Lynnhaven. The special taste & salinity of them is like no other. The Mother's Day Brunch menu featured 4 items. My son chose well. I didn't. His choice was the Soft-Shell Crab Benedict with Poached egg, crispy soft-shelled crab, Cajun hollandaise & home fries. Having been on an eating healthy and light regiment, I chose the Spinach and Mushroom Omelette with Cheddar Cheese & home fries. It was the first menu choice in 40 years that wasn't quality. The omelette was dry with the ends thin and overcooked. It was a disappointing menu item from a restaurant I've loved for decades. Of course I'll return. My husband and I came for our first wedding anniversary. A beautiful venue with old school fancy restaurant vibes inside, from the wood walls and roaring wood burning fireplace. The weather was terrible, so we didn't get to explore outside, but we definitely will in the future! The service was impeccable, and the food was delicious. The server was very friendly, immediately asked if I've tried their popular shrimp dish whether as appetizer or entree. They had tiny dehydrated toast like the primo ones available in Asian stores. They also served bread although not soft/pillowy warm. It was dry and semi hard. Would have been better not serving bread and serve amuse bouche of their popular shrimps, just a suggestion! I ordered the octopus and fillet mignon with side of broccolini. The octopus was crispy on the outside but very tender on the inside. The octopus tentacle was a decent portion, loved it. Tonight at STEINHILBER'S From valet parking to the final bite of a flawless experience, The filet mignon was perfect temperature at medium, the sautéed crab meat as a side was tender and sweet, the brussels sprouts as a side we're roasted to perfection and piping hot. Rod, was celebrating his 53rd birthday today. We split a wedge salad, a beautiful balance. The blue cheese was fresh and lovely. Rod had fried shrimp always a house favorite. We finished off with the Keylime pie. The best I've ever tasted... so light and airy and what would appear to be a crème Dement type item spread on the plate. A true returning of an early visit in the 70s or 80s of what I remember to be Steinhilber's at their best. Beautiful Bones, But the Kitchen Needs a Pulse Where do I even begin with Steinhilber's? Let's start with what they get right, because there is plenty to admire; at least before dinner arrives. Steinhilber's has beautiful bones. From the outside, the lake patio and manicured grounds set the stage beautifully. The upstairs dining room has that old-school elegance that makes you think you're about to experience the kind of dinner when people dressed up to dine. Even the waitstaff has the look of an era when upscale dining meant something a little more polished. We were seated at a gorgeous table overlooking the Lynnhaven River. Geese were leisurely trolling across the perfectly manicured lawn, beautiful planters lined the patio below us, and the whole setting was practically begging for a memorable dinner. Then came the waiter with osmosis water in glass bottles. Okay, Steiny; I see you. It was a lovely touch, and just when I thought we were off to a very good evening; the cracks began to surface. My confidence in the kitchen began to wobble once I noticed the food coming out of the kitchen. My girlfriend ordered the wedge salad. What arrived looked less like a composed salad and more like an iceberg lettuce casualty. The lettuce was jaggedly cut, visibly browned around the edges, and consisted largely of pale ribs with virtually none of the vibrant green leaves you expect from a properly prepared wedge. The toppings weren't even thoughtfully composed on the plate. They arrived separately in small silver cups, each looking as though whatever nutritional ambition they once possessed had been extracted somewhere around Tuesday. Then, I glanced across the room. A Caesar salad had arrived at the table across from us. It appeared to be an enormous pile of romaine ribs with not a single dark green leaf in sight. At that point, I had to wonder: Who is sending these plates out of the kitchen? Any chef worth his salt should have enough pride to stop a plate like that before it reaches the dining room. A diner can forgive an imperfect dish, but a lack of quality control is harder to forgive. Next, came the shrimp plate with six medium-sized fried shrimp that were bland enough to make you question whether seasoning had become a luxury item, accompanied by a twice-baked potato that was unmistakably having a very long day. My girlfriend ordered the short rib mushroom truffle risotto, which arrived with a substantial hunk of meat that looked like it had been introduced to the concept of "falling off the bone," but never quite committed to the relationship. And, the risotto? Risotto is deceptively simple. It takes technique, patience, seasoning, and restraint. This one simply missed the mark. Whatever flavor the chef was reaching for never quite made it to the plate. By this point, I had lost interest in wine, dessert, or any other culinary adventure at Steiny. I was contemplating something far more serious: Should I ask to speak to the chef? That's not where you want your diner mentally arriving before the entrée course is even over, which is the real disappointment here... Steinhilber's has the setting, history, atmosphere, and some lovely old-school touches that suggest this could be a truly special dining experience. But, beautiful surroundings can only carry a restaurant so far; eventually, the food has to show up, and on this visit, that simply was not the case. Steiny's is a big NO. The restaurant looks like it remembers what great dining used to be. I just wish the kitchen did, too. read more

We had reservations at 7:30 and arrived about 20 minutes early. They still seated us promptly. We had to remind the hostess that we requested the patio but that was no problem. The patio was beautifully lit. Our table had a fire pit in the middle so even tho I was in a dress, I was still warm. It took a while for our drink orders to be taken but our waiter had a large and talkative party close to our table. I believe it was the manager that stayed outside on the patio. Checking on tables, helping when needed. She even took a picture for a cute couple, which I thought was sweet. I ordered sangria which was tasty, my boyfriend had a coffee and said it was the best coffee he has ever had. We are going to inquire about purchasing some, if possible. The place is rustic and still has an old time feel. I really appreciated how the staff was dressed very professional. The vibe is very classy but not snobby. There were people in flannels to very nice evening gowns. We didn't get the impression that anyone was judgy. The crab cake was phenomenal. No filing. Get the Steiny sauce with it! The twice baked potato was also full of flavor. My boyfriend had the ribeye and it was cooked to perfection. It melted in your mouth and the flavor was on point. We had the scallop casino for an appetizer and he had the she crab soup. The soup was full of meat and thick. It was good. The sauce complimented the seafood perfectly for the casino. The prices are higher than many places but you definitely pay for the quality and experience here. It is obvious through the presentation and flavor that things are cooked to order, fresh and not frozen. The atmosphere, staff and food made our date night one to remember. The only thing I would change is to have more than one bathroom on the first floor. It was very clean though. We'd like to go back during the day so we can enjoy the view of the water. I've heard nothing but great things about Steinhilber's so I couldn't wait to try them out for a friend's birthday dinner. Steinhilber's is a beautifully quaint restaurant hidden in a neighborhood near Town Center. The exterior landscape of the restaurant was absolutely stunning at night and the outdoor seating included fire pits to keep you warm. We made reservations for 5:45pm on a Sunday and the table was ready upon arrival. The servers were very informative of the menu and provided the specials for the evening which all sounded great. We were also served complimentary bread which was warm and tasty. Our food was served fairly quickly. I decided on the Crab Cake with Twice-Baked Potato and it was absolutely amazing. The Crab Cake was a great size and full of fresh crab meat. The Twice-Baked Potato was also very good but I did have to add some salt. I tasted my friend's Filet Mignon and it was divine, especially with their homemade sauce. The restaurant manager, Kelly, came by to check on us, which I really admired. The waiters were very attentive and gave great recommendations. My husband and I split the ceasar salad and she crab soup. After thresher told my husband the oysters were local farm raised & fresh, he tried 6 which he really enjoyed. Got entrees my demand got the New York strip, mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts since he knows I love them! I got the lobster thermidor. Both dishes were great!! My husbands steak was cooked perfectly and those mashed potatoes were amazing!! The rosemary made them a star!! The brussel sprouts were cooked perfectly. My fish was great, the pasta was cooked perfectly and the fish was super flavorful. The lobster was very fresh. I tried their limoncello blueberry martini and my husband got a glass of Chardonnay. We both enjoyed our drinks. For dessert we got the carrot cake, which was great as well. Definitely a great spot for date night or for a celebration. We've missed Steiney's since we moved out of state, but this weekend we returned after 10 years away. I made reservations, sharing that it was my mother's 90th birthday. Steinhilber's is THE place in Virginia to celebrate milestones. The staff is professional, knowledgeable and pleasant; the wine list exceptional; the food is always perfectly prepared. This was not just a meal, but an experience that was sensory. The crab soup made the right way (yes, there is definitely wrong way to make it), and after placing the bowls in front of us, the server asked if we wanted sherry in our soup - which as any girl or guy raised in the South knows, she crab soup is NOT she crab soup with the sherry! Accompanying our course of soup, our cocktails were served. I opted for a very pleasant Pinot Noir from Oregon, the other two in our party. Both opted for cocktails. The cocktails were perfectly crafted with the correct valance of liquor to mixer. For a main course, all three of us opted for the crabcakes. Steinhibler's known for their crabcakes -- there is absolutely no filler. After we finished our entrees, it was time for dessert. The waiter presented my mother with a perfectly rendered créme brûlée with the delicately burned sugar topping I have seen. From start to finish, it was a delightful meal that we lingered over, enjoyed each other's company, the waitstaff was not intrusive, and gave us an opportunity to linger over our drinks. The wine list was extensive but they have a very limited selection of wines by the glass. If I'm paying $50 a plate, I'd expect a higher-end and broader selection of wines by the glass. This was a really classy place to dine with a group. First of all, the service and staff are outstanding. They are attentive, professional, and really treat you well. I loved the classic uniforms and the way they do their service. The food was really good, everyone at our large party got something they loved except for one person. The stars were the Lobster Thermidor, oysters Rockefeller, and octopus appetizer. The lobster was large half shell stuffed with decadent pieces of lobster dressed in a cheesy cream sauce. The oysters, while were creamy, hit a nice balance of salty and sweet, and spiced well. The octopus was clean, tender, and delicious. The only failure was the Chicken piccata, in which the diner felt the fat to acid ratio was way off and made the dish entirely too unpleasant to eat. Steinhilber's is located in a beautiful, peaceful setting. We sat by the window, gazing at a beautiful garden and stretch of lawn all the way to a waterway with boats sparsely docked. It's really a perfect setting for any kind of celebration or an intimate dinner. Ours was a tale of two meals: one spectacular the other disappointing. I had the whole fish of red snapper, which was spectacularly presented. The large portion of fish was fresh, tender, and wonderfully flavored. The flavors did not overwhelm the seafood. The sides of broccolini and roasted potatoes were perfect. Also, the portions were surprisingly generous. On the other hand, let's talk about the filet mignon. We had come to expect a high-level of quality and expertise at Steinhilber's based on many reviews. But this piece of filet mignon did not live up to that expectation. A great filet mignon should be slightly charred on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. This medium rare steak was grey on on the inside and lacked any juiciness and flavor , and the outside was undistinguished. It definitely was not a great quality of steak. We've had much better filet mignon at "lesser"restaurants. The dipping sauce for the steak was really too bitter to be of any use: it didn't add anything and overwhelmed the steak. We would've returned it, but it was awkward during a celebration. We won't make that mistake again. The twice baked potatoes were very dry and the seasoning was weak. The brussels sprouts looked beautiful on the plate, but they weren't crispy - in fact, they were a bit rubbery. And again, the seasoning was disappointing. The service was always professional if a bit remote. Again, with the beautiful setting and the great reputation we may come back at some point in the future and give it another chance. We had heard locals rave about Steinhilber's since we moved to Virginia Beach in 2003, and we finally got around to trying it 22 years later for my wife's birthday. The location is truly amazing, tucked away on the water in the Thalia neighborhood. It's a very quiet and peaceful setting. The interior, however, is quite dated. I know part of the appeal is the restaurant has been around since 1939, but there are better ways to honor nostalgic roots without just feeling old. The tables themselves were a bit uncomfortable; the legs were so close together that I nearly knocked the table over just trying to sit down. The wait staff was spectacular, with one glaring exception. If you're going to take up valuable real estate on my small table with a bottle of water for me to refill my own glass, then I don't need you hovering over me, refilling it after literally every sip. It prevented us from having a private conversation. If I'm not expected to pour my own water, remove the bottle from the table. Great location and exquisite service, but now for the downside: the kitchen. I ordered my steak medium rare. When it was delivered, I didn't even get a chance to cut into it before the waiter asked how everything was. As soon as he walked away, I cut into the end of my steak and saw absolutely no pink. I then cut it in half, right down the middle, and again, nothing--my medium rare steak had been cooked to well done. Previously, we had two staff members constantly hovering over our table, but now, when I actually needed one, they were gone. I waited several minutes before I was able to flag one down and explain my steak was overcooked. By this time, my wife was already halfway through her crab cake. They took the steak back and said they would get it fixed "right away." The manager came by and offered me a salad on the house so I would have something to eat while I waited. I finished my salad, my wife finished her entire meal, and then I was told my steak would be right out. I waited several more minutes before it finally arrived, now cooked black & blue. While I love a black & blue steak, that wasn't the medium rare I ordered. It was clear the kitchen had forgotten my order and then tried to rush it. Despite the misfire, the flavor was fantastic even if it wasn't what I had ordered. To their credit, the manager took the steak off our check and gave us a free dessert because of the kitchen's delays. All that in consideration, I still don't think the evening would have been worth the fine dining prices even if there had been no problems. It's a decent steakhouse that has grown a reputation beyond its actual ability due to local, nostalgic lore. It's a nice, old-fashioned steakhouse, but I do not anticipate returning. read more

After years of hearing the Steinhilber hype, we finally decided to splurge. Wedge salad was ok, Caeser salad was blah. Wilty and nothing special. Seafood dish lacked seafood. Pretty sure the twice baked potatoes were Mrs. Stouffers, dry and tasteless. The filet was excellent even though the yummy sauce was served in a goofy Ball jelly jar. Cocktails were good. I don't mind paying $150 for a meal that excels. This one was not worth the money. Should have called the manager. read more

We have come here several times for a team dinner. Excellent service every time! We end up having our event downstairs, which is nice and keeps it private with our own set of servers and bartenders. The food is really good and we typically have just about every appetizer available on tables pre-dinner while we enjoy cocktails, wine and beer and then choose entrees from the menu. I have always had an amazing meal here! We come here a lot because our team is over 30 people and there's only so many restaurants that can accommodate such a large party...! Luckily this place can not only accommodate, but do an amazing job with amazing service and culinary acumen as well! read more

Came here for a birthday dinner - a very nice cozy place. Staff were extremely professional and helpful. The pear martini was delicious, but tad too tart, and the maple old fashioned- a bit too sweet. We had their famous fried shrimp - very juicy and perfectly cooked. My lobster ravioli was good, but over salted, and my husband's Wellington could've used another minute or so in the oven. The lava cake was amazing though. Overall - a nice experience and will recommend to maybe go in spring/summer to enjoying the outdoor seating with a river view. read more

This is a great dining experience. The atmosphere, views,people and excellent food. It is a little expensive but it is well worth it. Go and enjoy something different, take a seat in a establishment that's been in this area for 80 years. read more

It's been a long while since we tried Steny's (as it's now called) family meal with a nice Malbec. Entrees were shrimp and 2 NY strips. Sides were 2xs baked, asparagus and garlic spinach. Food was great, service very prompt and friendly. The old school pics of the Va beach area are very cool. Can't wait to try it again via vessel once the wx warms up. Thanks! read more
