Big buckets of seafood and bibs ALWAYS means you're going to have a good time! If getting messy and getting really "in to" your food doesn't appeal to you, then bye Felecia! This place reminds me of Hot N Juicy out in Vegas and Orlando, but with MUCH less heat (in a good way, Hot N Juicy has me crying flames). My sister and I had a blast here! We got here 30 min after they opened on a Saturday and there was ALREADY a wait. So if you come, just be prepared to wait. The servers do go as fast as they can but they can only do so much. Our server was awesome. And I forgot her name! She was young, Asian, skinny, very pretty, and on TOP of it! She had a row of multicolored pens on her apron so if you see her-get her! She was very attentive and gave us enough condiments and water to last us the entire meal without having to bother her. Anyway, on to the food. It was awesome. We started with fried calamari and hush puppies because I knew we would be waiting a while. If you do this- Let the server know this is why you are ordering the fried food. The fried stuff isn't labeled as "Apps" so the server won't necessarily know to bring this first. But the actual food does take a while to get to the table so I would suggest doing this. Both were great! Surprisingly. I didn't have high standards for the calamari, and while this was definitely not the best I've ever had, it certainly was not the worst either! I would order it again. It comes out in rings, if that helps your decision at all. And they are big (I attached a photo)! And the hush puppies. Yum! Especially when your server is awesome and brings you your melted butter beforehand so you can dip your puppies in that oily golden bath..wait. What? I got 1lb shrimp with 1/2 sausage. You have to add the sausage as an extra and if you want the bang for you buck, and I'd suggest going that route. So worth it! I got the "Hot-Shakin Sauce" IT WAS PERFECT! As I have stated in other reviews I love spicy food. And I can, for the most part, handle my heat. The "Hot" here was perfect. I didn't cry, I maybe sniffled once or twice? I am currently craving crab legs, and I have been for the past few weeks. I've been trying home recipes, and every once in a while I'll go out and bring home a boil bag for me to enjoy. Shaking Crab was definitely on my list for me to try. I ordered snow crab legs, with their Shaking Crab sauce, and medium heat. The heat from the spice was on point, but the crab was almost too sweet for me. The butter was also sweet. I liked that the sweetness evened out with their seasonings, and that little spice just made it feel like a little parade inside. If I could change ONE thing about this restaurant it would most definitely be the size. There is not nearly enough seating in here for the amount of traffic this place brings. Parking has gotten better since they have closed several stores since the Shaking Crab opened. We waited over 2 hours for a table for a party of 6....note to self, don't come here with a large party ever again lol The food is amazing. I got the crab legs and shrimp with the head which came with one corn on the cob and ONE measly potato in the bag. My flavor of choice was the garlic butter which is super delish. The prices to me are fair for a seafood spot. Their tea is a little on the sweet side but I still liked it. My only issue with this place is that I feel like it should be twice as big. Also, the long wait times. They should really invest in the buzzers to give to customers rather than just calling out numbers because if I'm going to be waiting that long, I don't like to have to stand in that tight area up front waiting for one of their very few seats in that area to be available. read more

Nothing ... we reserved online it wasn't crowded at 3:00 so we were seated promptly. Our waitress Hailey was so friendly and attentive it was a pleasure to tip her! Saturday's meal selection was a winner! We forgot to say we had 10-% off for our Yelp check in but hey the food was so tasty we didn't mind! My meal of crab legs shrimp and sausage was 60.00. Three words: The Shaking Sauce. That's all you need to remember. It is the sauce of your dreams, seriously, you will dream about it that night and the night after that, and maybe even the night after that. If I could just have a bowl of that sauce in my fridge at all times, my life would be perfect. My boyfriend and I came here on Friday, about 30 minutes after they opened for lunch. It was the perfect time to go, there was maybe only 4 other tables there at the time, and we got a nice booth right away. Our waiter was a super friendly guy, very accommodating. Waters came in a to go cup which I found a little strange. We both ordered the combo with shrimp (with heads) and crawfish. And then we made the best decision of the day, by getting The Shaking Sauce on it. I got meduim, he got hot. I also got half a lb of sausage in mine for us to share, and he got an order of cajun fries. The waiter let us get both potatoes and corn too! He came back with a large bucket and 2 plastic bibs, which got us even more excited. The food didn't take too long, there weren't too many other tables. Once the food came out, we realized we probably over ordered (as per usual with us). I saw the side of rice from someone else's table, and it's huge. We got down right to it. The shrimp is good, I think I might have actually like the crawfish better though. Everything was cooked perfectly. The crawfish was so so good. And that Shaking Sauce, wow. The Shaking Sauce is a combination of all 3 of their other sauces. The medium had the perfect amount of heat, and the flavors in The Shaking Sauce is amazing. There were 3 potatoes in the bag and one small corn on the cob. Potatoes were okay, but SUPER filling. It was nice to eat it with the sauce, but the corn soaked up all the sauce and was delicious. Next time, I'll probably just go for the corn. We used the fries to soak up the sauce as well. Like another reviewer said, it wasn't really cajun fries so much as just regular fries. There was no cajun seasoning too much, but dipping it in the sauce made it A-OK with me. The sausage was flavorful too, again the sauce made it so good as well. This place was so good, we powered through and finished both our meals. It was worth the food coma. We couldn't stop talking about the Shaking Sauce either. Our waiter offered us drinks to go as well. I let him know we had the Yelp Check-In offer, of 15% off ahead of time, and he brought one of the managers (?) over to watch me check-in. Super easy and quick, and they did it automatically put it on our final bill. I thought the food was great for the price. The amount of seafood you get is crazy. My one coworker was telling me he got a side of rice to pour the sauce over, which I'm dying to go back and try next time too. We had both been wanting to go to a seafood/crawfish boil type deal. And every time we're in NOVA, we always forget to go to Chasin' Tails. I was so happy to see they finally opened up a place like this in the VA Beach area. It's a fun and different dining experience. I also like that it's not super crowded and filled with tourists like seafood shacks by the oceanfront. We've been there twice and gotten combo B medium spicy with cajun seasoning the first time and the shakin seasoning the second time which is all of their seasonings. We also got potatoes and corn, but you can get one or the other. The crab was really sweet and steamed well. The shrimp was also perfectly steamed. Definitely a favorite. We loved writing on the walls and our waitresses have been great both times we've been. I recommend the medium spicy cajun seasoning. Shaking Crab is a fun spot and is perfect for messy eaters. Their dining experience is a little different from typical restaurants. You order items which they boil, then serve everything to you in a plastic bag. It's reminiscent of crab boils that normally take place at home with friends and family. They've taken that concept and replicated it, with great effect, in the food service industry. I went with a friend on a Friday night, which is a gamble because at the time they were still a new establishment. The wait was 30-45 minutes but we weren't in a rush, so all was well. Service was solid, but our server also had a couple of big parties, so there were times we had to wait. But with Shaking Crab being both new and busy, we didn't mind. Ultimately, it's the food that will win over diners, and I was happy with their food quality. We ordered crab legs and shrimp, mixed in with corn and potatoes. They have four different sauces that you can choose to throw in - we ordered the Shaking sauce. and you can ask to spice it up, but since I'm a wuss we opted for mild. There was plenty of food - or at least we thought, because we ended up ordering more shrimp. We had to ask for rice, and they charge extra for it. I guess that's not a big deal, but they charge per bowl, and their bowls are just enough for 2 people. But with my friend and I being Filipino, you have to recalculate any serving of rice on a "pinoy curve." Overall, Shaking Crab is legit. And considering similar restaurants have opened and gone out of business since Shaking Crab opened, they must be doing something right. I have only gone once, though, since it's more for big groups. Arrived a bit before 3pm and was told the wait would be about 5 - 10 minutes. They were spot on, we waited no more no less. Not a huge space for dining in, so I can easily see how the wait times can be common and long. The waitress promptly greeted us with some fresh popped corn and took our drink orders. The menu gives you a 1, 2, 3 step for customizing your "bag" of goodies. I had the snow crab and head-off shrimp, shaking crab sauce with medium spice. The order comes with potatoes and corn on the cob. I added a 1/2 pound of sausage too. The food came out in less than 10 minutes. The food was absolutely delicious and plentiful. So plentiful, I cannot remember the last time I needed a doggy bag for seafood. It's a fun experience to really "dig" in and enjoy a good seafood meal without any fuss. It's been a long time since I've had boiled shrimp cooked in shrimp boil that brought back memories from decades ago. "Sneaking off" from the college dormitory at Mississippi State to savor the delights of the French Quarter in New Orleans was a really fun thing. Not sure what to expect on my first visit to this Kemp's River Crossing restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised. The interior was casual with the walls covered in black Sharpie marker writings left by previous patrons. It certainly looked the part of a restaurant with seafood a la Orleans. The menu left me wishing I could choose multiple entrees. I was torn between the catfish, fried shrimp, crawfish & boiled shrimp. I finally settled on a pound of boiled shrimp. After all, this was a trip down memory lane. The dorm call to New Orleans was always someone running down the hall yelling "boiled shrimp." Our server questioned me on the type of sauce that I wanted. I didn't quite understand, since I had already told him I wanted cocktail sauce. The explanation was that what they called sauce is actually the shrimp boil it is cooked and served in. Confusing...... But it was good. I chose the Shaking Sauce, which was a combination of the other 3 choices. One can also choose between three levels of spiciness. There were two problems. The first was how the shrimp was presented. It was served (in some of the boil) in a large plastic bag tied at the top. The first impediment was getting the knot untied, not the easiest thing for someone with rheumatoid arthritis. And the server didn't stick around to see if I needed help. It was also quite messy, reaching inside the bag to pull out the shrimp, peel and pop it out of the tail. The second problem was with the side. One choice was potatoes. I inquired as to what type. When the answer was boiled small red potatoes, that became my choice. It would be perfect with the boiled shrimp. But when I unknotted my bag I saw only one potato. A list of sides on the menu showed potatoes (3). Upon mentioning the problem to my server I was informed that the one potato was correct. Not really much of a side..... Three would have been perfect. Our table of 5 received one large bucket for seafood shell discards. Two smaller buckets would have been more workable. And we who ordered boiled shrimp only received one wet wipe packet. Our entree, which is a messy eat, always requires more. The choices of adult beverages include only beer and wine. The wine was not high quality. But it was priced accordingly. The establishment was clean, full of customers, and had ample parking due to its shopping center location. It was rather hard to locate for the first time. A handy navigation App was required. My mind is not yet made up on whether I'll return or not. The shrimp was great but I'd love to have been served a full side. One potato just doesn't "cut it". read more

I can see why this place always has a long wait time. There's a decent number of seats for people who are waiting for a table. Portion size seems bigger than other seafood boil places I've tried for relatively the same price. I do like that their medium spice level has a good kick to it and is what I would expect from a medium spice level seasoning. I ordered 2 lb crawfish and 1 lb shrimp with head with garlic butter / Cajun seasoning. The corn tasted great as well. I do wish the seasoning was a little more flavorful but for the portion size and price, I can't complain. Staff was also very attentive and checked up on how we were doing or needed anything else despite having a full house with tons of other customers to attend to. I got the snow crab legs bag with shrimp, potatoes, and corn. The seafood is decently priced. My mom got the shrimp basket with fries. I LOVED the seasonings that they use, make sure you the the Shaking Sauce (which are all the sauces combined). You can do mild, medium, or hot. The medium is perfect. The shrimp basket was good too. It was hard to distinguish the calamari from the onion rings because they were all the exact same shape and size and obviously frozen and from some supply house. They were super greasy, not just fried in a lot of old oil but left sitting for a long time. Needless to say everything was saturated with oil and cold by the time my order came. I heated everything up in the air fryer hoping to "crispen" things a bit and remove some of the oil but it didn't help. I won't be ordering from this restaurant ever again. In a city that is know. Went there on a Friday night, which is something I NEVER DO, because in my humble opinion, the quality of the food is reduced. We arrived and checked in around 7:15pm, we were told the wait is 1 and 1/2 hours. I shirked it off and hung around instead of suggesting going somewhere else, but I did not. In the time waiting my wife and daughter went shopping, spending up all my money. I waited in the car as they did so as my grandson slept. After seeing the death of me with the amount of money my family spent shopping (Praise God for financial Blessings), we finally got in around 9:15p. The restaurant had a rustic feel too it. Close knit tables, sorta of a ranch feel, large tables because you are going to need room to shuck some shells from the seafood, and what I love most, you can leave your autograph all over the place. There were signatures, social media handles and some advertisements all over the place. This was really cool. We were greeted by a bubbly server, she took our drink order. She came back with the drinks and some really good movie popcorn which was ok with me because I was hungry anyway. We placed our order. Now, the food if you haven't already heard, the shacking meals are steamed in plastic bag. Yes, you can get fried food too but if you want the shacking food, its shellfish (of your choice and your way), potato, and corn or any other crustation in a plastic bag that is steamed in a shacking sauce (Lemon Butter, Garlic Sauce and some other mixed together). I also had a couple of Heineken. Since you are cracking a lot of shell food (they give you the tools to do so) they give you these plastics bibs. Trust me, you will need them with all that sauce slinging all over the place. Lastly the bill. We paid $224.00 without tip for 5 people (1 child) and that does not include tip. So lets sum this up. We waited almost an hour and a half, paid over $200 and you wonder why go? Well, the food is AMAZING! And you will have plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day! I highly recommend Shacking Crab! What they don't tell you is that you need to arrive at least an hour before you plan to dine. That is because you will most likely have to wait to get a reservation which is done by ticket. I ordered the shrimp and crab legs combo that came with potatoes and corn. I got the spicy sauce that was a mixture of all the sauces but made super spicy. The food came out super quick and I accompanied mine with a nice cold corona. My meal was little over $30 and I had leftovers but I had two small red potatoes and a small piece of corn. With all of the spicy sauce in my bag with nothing in my belly to soak up the sauce I had a belly ache. At the price of the food one would expect more starchy foods to fill you up along with the seafood. I also tried the calamari which was extremely rubbery and almost like an after thought. You probably wouldn't believe me if I told you how hard it is to actually find a decent place with crab legs in Norfolk. Isn't the city RIGHT on the damn water?! Anyway, nestled inside a very nondescript strip mall, I found a nice little spot. Walking in, Shaking Crab looks like every strip mall chinese food restaurant I've ever been to. Its when you sit down that you see the charm Shaking Crab has. At the table, the top is covered with clean paper and on every square inch of the walls, beams and rafters is....for lack of a better word, graffiti. Bring your Sharpie to Shaking Crab, as they let you tag to your hearts content. There wasn't an inch of free space to add anything as everything is COVERED in writing. AND, it should be noted, with that policy, and that amount of work, you would expect the vulgarities to be PLENTIFUL, but aside from the mens room, I couldn't find a single untoward word or phrase. And, if you've ever been in a mens room, you'd know that curses and horrible phrases are the rule, not the exception. Even in the bathroom though, it was the absolute bare minimum of terribleness. The only thing that was off for me was that the seat backs were wobbly and loose and every time I moved, I bumped the unlucky people sitting behind me. About the food: flavor wise, this place is SPOT ON! You pick your food, your flavor and your spice, and they throw that shit in a bag, shake it up and deliver it to you. As far as TASTE, Shaking Crab was a knock out. The mild garlic butter seasoning I had on my crab legs and shrimp was DELICIOUS. (weirdly enough though, AVOID THE DRAWN BUTTER. It tasted off. Like a weird, old burnt, rancid flavor) The seasonings and sauce just sit in the bag, covering every inch of your food. Make no mistake about it, you will get absolutely filthy eating here. I was covered up to my elbows in seasoning when it was all said and done. Its not ALL accolades and praise however as there were 2 things in particular that I wasn't a total fan of. First, and this is gonna sound weird, but the servings were too much. You can't get a 1/2 pound of anything here (other than side sausage.) I wanted crab legs and shrimp for my meal (so I had to get the combo). Now, a pound of crab legs isn't anything crazy. Thats like 2 clusters. But a POUND OF SHRIMP? Thats a different story. It wound up being like 30 shrimp, which is what I like to call, WAY too many shrimp. I knew that before I ordered, but you don't have a choice. Listen, I ate WAY too many shrimp, gave all the ones I couldn't finish to my dining partner, and there were still 9 shrimp left over when HE had had enough. It was an obnoxious amount of shrimp. If you're splitting this bag, then great! But if its just you, you're going to be wasting a lot of food. Secondly, the bags come with corn on the cob and potatoes and while the potatoes were cooked nicely and, with the delicious seasoning, were a treat, the corn was mushy. If it weren't for the seasoning, the corn would've been straight to the bin. I've read that this place gets hella busy, but at around 5:30 on a Thursday, we had zero problems getting a seat or our food. Your mileage may vary. They have a bar too (wine and beer) so you can sip a lil sumpin if you're so inclined. If I'm back in Norfolk, I would definitely head back. Oh, WEAR THE BIB! Seriously.
