I LOVE liege waffles. The pearlized sugar hanging in the dough (as opposed to batter) with a little speculoos spread is heavenly. And NO ONE does them better than Shaky Alibi. Trust me, I've tried to find competition in every place, in every city that has one on the menu. Shaky Alibi really takes this up a whole level with waffle irons straight from Belgium and amazing toppings--- the sweet are as good as the savory. The coffee is outstanding too. Honestly, I haven't tried anything else on the menu because one waffle is surprisingly pricey in calories, but if you want a calorie splurge, want a waffle, and want the best waffle you can find, this is it! Also, I find the counter staff to be among the friendliest, hardest working and most on top of things of any coffee bar I've ever been to. My husband stopped by their grand opening weekend and brought me home half a waffle. I took a bite... inhaled the rest... and then demanded why I wasn't brought a whole one! The inside was a bit denser than most waffles, but the outside was nicely carmelized and crunchy. It's the perfect lil snack for someone like me to fulfill unforeseeable cravings! I went back a few days ago. I'm glad it's in our neighborhood.. The place is clean and seems like a nice place to enjoy a cup of coffee and reading a paper. My only gripe is the price. A small waffle with the nutella-ish spread and some bananas set me back close to $7 + tip for the super nice server who totally deserved it. So yes, it's pretty pricey. Went here with a friend right when it opened on Saturday morning after hearing some good things about the restaurant. We decided to split a couple of the waffles: one savory waffle, and because we both have a sweet tooth, one dessert waffle. For the savory waffle, we went with the canadian bacon and gruyere. The waffle was tasty with the sweetness of the waffle mixing with the salty of the bacon and cheese, but in all honesty, was not worth the $9 it's priced at on the menu. The dessert waffle on the other hand, was definitely worth it. The waffle was perfectly cooked and went well with the espresso ice cream and whipped cream that came on top. We really enjoyed it and would definitely come back again for it. Overall, a great little joint, especially for their dessert waffles. Don't go here if you are in a rush though as it took quite a bit of time for us to get our waffles even right at the opening. read more

WAFFLE..... drool I HEART waffles, and therefore am very particular. These aren't your typical soft waffle nor is it the super crispy belgian waffle which i prefer. It is a whole new breed of waffle. Its made with a yeast based dough. For you baking newbs, yeast eats the sugar in the flour and creates gluten. Gluten in turn develops the great texture that all good bread has. So because they are using this type of dough, the portion that touches the hot iron gets cripsy and flaky while the inside is fluffy and chewy at the same time. Each waffle is made to order with Belgian pearl sugar and dusted with powdered sugar. The perfect topping is Fresh Whipped Cream. Its not your typical reddi-whip stuff from the can. Shaky Alibi uses the legit heavy cream to make your fatty and delicious whipped cream. If you have read thus far in my review, I hope I have convinced you to go and try these delectable treats. I like the tea because they steep it for you and then remove the tea bag so that you dont get that nasty over steeped tea. The coffee was also good. The only real reason I knocked this place one star was because I was told it gets crazy on Friday nights since they open up the ping pong table and somehow that creates some sort of scene. I went by at 8pm and it was a graveyard. Which isnt much of a surprise given the fact a ping pong table might not be the best option for creating a good time given all the space it takes up inside. read more

These have gotta be the Best Waffles in Los Angeles. I'm gonna hashtag it even, #BestWafflesLosAngeles! Now it's official. The speculoos spread is what they are known for, it's the owner's family recipe. The owner is often there and he his a super nice guy, humble, working with the staff and taking orders. He was even cool enough to give a few impromptu words on video about the restaurant for my Vlog a few years ago when we first visited. All of the food is top notch. The meat and cheese options are excellent also. The Gouda is very VERY good. All of the coffee is solid, and I have it on good authority that the parfaits are wicked good. We recommend this little under-the-radar cafe to friends all the time, and know that our friends are introducing others to this place. Wow. Best waffle I've ever had. I had a traditional waffle with speculous and banana slices - i loved it. Chewy, sweet, delicious. Nice little spot and decent staff. I sat at the counter, ate my waffle with a poached egg and had some coffee. I was well-pleased. One major flaw that I will overlook because I liked the place so much: Other than the waffles which are made in the irons, they don't cook anything on griddles or ovens... they microwave (gasp!) their eggs and meats. So the eggs are only made 'poached' style in those little microwave mechanisms. The meats (bacons, etc) must be pre-cooked and then microwaved. This possibly will weird people out. The coffee is made Americano style and tasted very good. But they don't seem to have brewed coffee available. ***IMPORTANTish NOTE*** They don't process tips on credit/debit cards. Where to start... It's just perfect. The attention to detail by their staff with each and every delicious thing they serve just makes it a great experience. Breakfast is beautiful and lunch is divine. However, what really makes it wonderful is the staff. Honestly, they treat you like family and know exactly what you want before you do. Really deliciously delicious coffee. About the best I've had outside of Intelligensia and Stumptown. They use a special organic milk for drinks like the cappucino and latte. I drink soy in my coffee and I'm guessing they have some sort of fancy soy back there because it was seriously the best soy capp I've had in a LONG time. Lil pricey at $4 for a double soy capp, but the neighborhood can afford it. Still, I wouldn't have minded if it were just under $4. My psyche would've handed it better and I'd be more inclined to tip. It's a psychological thing, I think. They gave me a free cookie. It was also yummy. The owner is super sweet and friendly, as is the staff. You can tell they're excited to make a go of it in the area. I just like that they're close to my apartment. For a while Buzz was the closest coffee shop in walking distance and they're AWFUL. If this place adds sandwiches they'll easily put Buzz out of business. read more

Stopped by this morning for breakfast with my friend and fiancee based on another friend's recommendation and Shaky Alibi did not disappoint. We were served by the owner - he was super friendly and since we were first-timers, he went over the entire menu and the uniqueness of their liege waffle and their espresso. The waffle made with a yeast dough, dense and perfect for sweet or savory items with no need for syrup or butter; the espresso is all per order and comes from a place only a few miles away; the milk from santa barbara, organic and made to pair with coffee/espresso, the syrups from europe; the in house special spread - speculoos, a graham cracker blend in either creamy or crunchy, which he gave samples of each - everything about it was delicious! We all went the sweet route for our waffles and everyone left happy and full. The waffle is like the perfect balance of a waffle and funnel cake. We had crunchy speculoos with chocolate hazelnut and blueberries, creamy speculoos with their milk chocolate sauce and fresh, made in house, whipped cream, and one of their specials - the elvis - creamy natural peanut butter, bananas and bacon, I also had a vanilla latte that was incredible! I'm not a huge waffle fan. At first bite you get a crisp yet fluffy texture topped with sweet maple and a hint of butter that's utterly sinful. But the waffle quickly betrays your trust in sweet crisp fluffy goodness, by absorbing the syrup and becoming this cold soggy mealy mess that is barely recognizable as the delicious treat you just had the pleasure to chew. At the assurance of my friend Vinny who insisted that these waffles were like no other waffles, I soon found myself sitting at a counter of The Shaky Alibi, lazily sipping a heavenly vanilla latte with beans provided by none other than Intelligentsia Coffee. Staring at a very minimal menu for a good 15 minutes, I contemplated how I would piece together my savory waffle. I decided that mesquite smoked turkey and medium cheddar cheese would combat the sweet yet predatory river of maple syrup that was surely going to drown my helpless waffle without mercy. My savory waffle comes in the form of a thin, slightly browned sandwich, coated in powdered and Belgian pearl sugar; it looks utterly delicious. There is no maple syrup in sight. I internally gasp, wondering how am I to eat such an item without a sauce. I'm a saucy person who demands some liquid whether it drown my waffle or not! Then the waiter places Trappey's Louisiana hot sauce in front of me, I now gasp out loud. At this point many thoughts run through my head: You expect me to eat, sweet, savory and spicy??!! In a Breakfast item!? Do they know what time it is? I don't think this will help anyone with a hang over... Curiosity takes over and I bite the sandwich with a spot of hot sauce. While the combination of sweet, salt and spice sounds like a stomachache waiting to happen it's not. It's texture, taste and attitude have so many layers that it's simply indescribable. It's a sandwich that you'll crave and dream about for weeks, months and years to come. A couple of things to keep in mind before coming here. It's more of a cafe than a restaurant. It's pretty small and the seating is limited. The waffles are SMALL. Don't come expecting a big ole waffle the size of your plate. Ok, once you have your expectations in check, get your butt here for authentic Belgian waffles. These are seriously the best waffles I've had outside of Belgium. They're crispy with caramelized sugar on the outside and soft and a little chewy on the inside. Perfect! The downsides are what I mentioned above. Like the waffles in Belgium, these waffles are snack sized and they are ridiculously overpriced if you try to make a meal out of it. The traditional Liege waffe is about $5.50 which is fine if that's all you're eating as a snack. But I came here with my family for breakfast. I ended up getting crumbled bacon, smoked gouda and a poached egg on my savory waffle which came out to about $11. I don't mind paying $11 for breakfast but not when it leaves me feeling like I had half a bfast! Also, even the savory waffle was too sweet. I got to dissect the waffle a bit as I cut one in half for my kids and realized each waffle is FULL of sugar crystals. Like FULL of them. (Will attach a photo.) Obviously you don't eat waffles as a part of a healthy diet but even as a treat i was a little surprised by the amount of sugar in them. So the overall verdict? It's still the best waffle I've had outside of Belgium. So for that I will give 4 stars. But will I be back here for breakfast? Probably not. But it might make for a perfect dessert or snack. ;) Street parking can be tough in this neighborhood. We came right around 9am on a Sunday (when they open) so it wasn't an issue for us but not sure I'd attempt to come during meal hours. Kiddo tip: Uhh, the waffles are full of sugar so obviously your kids will LOVE it. I used to go to Shaky Alibi all the time to get waffles. I recently ordered waffles with whipped cream and freshed squeezed orange juice to go. They put the whipped cream on top of the waffles instead of on the side. It came all melted and soggy completely ruined, I had to throw it out. The fresh squeezed orange juice was full of ice and tasted like water. I am extremely disappointed. When I called they said I didn't specify I wanted the whipped cream on the side and that fresh squeezed orange juice comes with ice. I think that response says it all. I love everything about this place! So we shared a savory waffles sandwich with turkey and gruyiere cheese which was amazing. The sweet and savory flavor combination was perfect as one did not over power the other. We each got a traditional liege waffle which was crisp and crunchy like we like it. We got chocolate and strawberries as a topping and it was also great. For my drink I had the ever so refreshing violet lemonade. I loved it as it wasn't too sweet ans had great flavor. My boyfriend ordered both a sweet and a savory plate, and I ordered a savory plate with a poached egg. I truly enjoyed the egg, but to be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of the fact that all the waffles contain clusters of sugar. The egg, meat, and cheese all went well together, but to top that off with a waffled packed with sugar instantly turned me off. This place is really really good. I got the two eggs poached which came with a side order of meat and fresh fruit. I got the sausage patties and they were very very good. I also opted to get blueberries. My other choices were strawberries or bananas. The blueberries were very plump, juicy, and sweet, you can tell immediately that they use high-quality, organic ingredients. My meal was delicious and very very fantastic. We lingered here for about 2 1/2 hours and never felt rushed or that they wanted us to leave. They have indoor and outdoor seating. My friend got the savory waffle, while it was good she did mention that the waffle is not soft. I would definitely come back. Inside of the restaurant is very cute. They have several tables and it has a very nice neighborhood vibe. They also have umbrellas for outside. The service here is very friendly, helpful and very attentive.
