Shalimar is our go to spot for Pakistani food in the East Bay. The food is amazing and has lots of flavor. Our favorite is the chicken boti kabab. The naan is thicker than the one that you get an Indian restaurants and goes well with the chicken tikka masala. Their masala chai is amazing. I usually don't drink tea but every time I go there I make sure I drink at least a couple of cups. It is scalding hot though, so be careful! Yes the place is not as fancy as some of the other restaurants in the neighborhood and the curries are swimming in oil so it is not the most healthiest either, but once you taste the food you will ignore everything else and keep going back for more. read more

Here is my take on Shalimar, with Pros and Cons. While trying to remove some sticky stuff off my shoes... Pros: 1. The price are reasonable, maybe a bit higher, but reasonable, just like any other Indian/Pakistani restaurant in the same category. That is all I got... Cons: 1. The food is just OK, I am not sure why all the high reviews!? Many other similar restaurants with similar dishes, I believe have better taste, a bit more spice. Can't give you a example, because "The Man" will probably pull my review. 2. The place is NOT clean (Sticky stuff on my Shoes), the tables are wiped down with dirt clothes and they are in very poor shape. This is a surprise, because this place seems to be making some fat cash, at least fix the tables and chairs. 3. Some of dishes have this huge amount of oil in them, so if you don't grease dishes, be careful what you order. 4. If ordering meat, You should check your Tandoori Chicken or meat, the table next to me and my dish was raw! Not good, ask for Well Done! 4. The customer service, is not really there, when you order, they person taking your order is rude. Too much garlic in the naan ...dirty utensils...dirty bathrooms, dirty floors....dirty dirty dirty....omg...food and safety department doesn't come here...they probably have rats, cockroaches, and whatever else....came here to try brain masala which was tasty, but probably won't recommend. For the price, it's amazing. The environment is not the best, but again, they are not charging you for it. The food on the other hand is just amazing. I've only been here once... to get some to-go Naan bread. The naan is HUGE and I got 3 pieces for $5. Very good price and tasted pretty good too but the place was FILTHY. I was only in there for about 10 minutes but I felt like I needed a shower after. It was just extremely dirty....based on what I saw, I have absolutely no desire to ever eat here. I'm not Indian but I am close to Indians, and I'm pretty sure this restaurant is closer to authentic Indian food than a lot of other Indian restaurants. I find it to be real spicy. I like a little spice but I draw the line when I cannot taste the food because it is so spicy. I mean, why bother? I've had kabobs in the past but they were too spicy. My husband got Tika Masala. He liked it, and he liked how spicy it is. But said there was very little meat. I forgot to order rice for him so he just dipped his naan bread in the sauce and ate the chicken. I think many of the good reviews hit it on the head: Please do not come here looking for a decor, light, etc. Mercy, it's rough! But the food is really reasonably priced (I paid a heck of a lot more at an establishment not far from this one for the exact same meal. What gives? I don't know, but Shalimar had a stone cold groove on Indian food) and the vittles are tasty. While the Mango Lassi was so-so, the Chicken Tikka rocked, the was good, and the garlic Nan had a stone cold groove going on! Oh Shalimar, how I want to love thee! On a positive side, the tandoori dishes are cooked well with nice depth of flavor and the garlic naan is amazing. The restaurant is a bit on the dumpy side and reminds me of a middle school cafeteria. You order at the counter, gather your own place settings, and seat yourself. I come here and to the one in Fremont. What a great atmosphere. This isn't a five star restaurant with quiet atmosphere and classical music in the background. This is as close as it gets to being a true Indian restaurant. I come with my family of 16 people just to eat here. I recommend Lahore style chicken "Murgi Korma Shahi" and lamb "bhuna gosht", great bbq leg and thigh chicken, fragrant "palak aloo methi" which is their spinach dish, and excellent naan. The food is great but their service is hard to explain. The cashier is funny, no eye contact, he basically asked "what you want?" I'm so glad Shalimar finally appeared in our area. I've tried them in SF and Fremont and loved their food. The food is outstanding in Shalimar's I don't know how they do that, but they are the best chain of restaurants I've ever dined at. On a side note, before them it was Masala Time in the same place. They also served very good food and interior looked very new and clean. As Shalimar moved in they seem to had bought in the business with all furniture and utensils, but they somehow turned them into usual Shalimar's scuffed style. No one beats Shalimar for authentic Pakistani food. Food is made fresh, perfect naan, and same low prices as always. The taste is always perfect and you will feel well fed at a very cheap price.
