You don't come to Shalimar for the decor let's just get that out of the way. You do however come to Shalimar for some seriously fantastic food at great prices. They have a few locations and this one always seems to be the best. You can't go wrong ordering the tandoori chicken breast or legs or the chicken or beef seekh kebabs. When they have lamb it's entirely out of this world amazing but also don't fault the restaurant if they don't have something on the menu on a particular day. Understand that they are busy! There have been times when I've tried to place a takeout order and I can't even get through the line is so busy. You also might have to wait in line once you get there in person. It's worth it I promise! It's a busy business serving up consistent food and they have a mastery of takeout packaging. The food here at this Shalimar location is fantastic! The other location in Fremont- not so much- actually eeewww. The chicken and goat biryani is not too spicy with lemon slices and the rice is always perfect. I would prefer more dark meat in the chicken biryani like drum sticks and thighs but have noticed they do white meat pieces more. The hot nihari with tender chunks of shank beef in a rich spicy flavorful curry always hits the spot with a fluffy naan. While on the subject of naans- the naan here is always thick and fluffy- never hard or crispy or thin or burnt in areas like other restaurants. All the curries are great! Be aware that Pakistani curries usually always have tons of oil- unhealthy never tasted sooooo good!!! Just dont eat it all the time- HA The tikka bbq chicken is the best in the bay area compared to any other restaurant. The spices/masala used to marinate the chicken is like no other. The chicken is marinated so well that the spices are not just on the outside but all the way to the core. Always moist and not dry like jerky. Excellent Pakistani style food. We had a chicken tikka, lamb chops and beef seekh kebabs. All meat was hot and fresh from the tandoor and absolutely delicious. Naans were huge. Ordered two and barely finished one. The yoghurt mint and cilantro sauce is tasty and an excellent dipping sauce. Will be back to try more dishes. Note: the restaurant itself is dinghy and messy but we felt it was an upgrade from the Downtown San Francisco location. read more

Ordered 10 goat Biryani by phone and picked by paying cash same day evening for birthday party. Surprise it was chicken instead of goat (Paid double for goat biryani) , Disappointing because we already had Chicken dish in our menu for the party. It is OK mistake does happen called him next day and told the mistake. Apologized and said "Will give you 4 goat biryani for free to make it up to the mistake" I never asked for this but OK ! Acknowledged the mistake at least. Called him next week same guy picks the phone then true Shalimar legendary customer service "Sorry I don't remember you or the conversation may be some else you spoke to give me your number and I will call you back" - My guess is as good as yours never got the call back. We have ordered food from and visited Shalimar several times before and it is really delicious (hence the 3 stars). I HIGHLY recommend ONLY ordering take out because, to be frank, their restaurant is shockingly gross and their service isn't the most friendly. It was never a fancy restaurant to begin with - very much hole-in-the-wall - but it somehow has gotten worse during/after the pandemic, which is very concerning. We originally planned to dine-in but I couldn't bear to stay there and eat comfortably so we took our food home to eat. Unfortunately I couldn't shake the shock when I got home either and couldn't enjoy my food. Other than the high quality food, this place has little to recommend itself. The food caters to the Pakistani palate. It evokes a sense of nostalgia in me. I love the naans, chicken tikka masala, and seekh kebabs. Prices are reasonable. Sitting inside is quite an ugly experience. Noisy, dirty and everything else that you don't want in a restaurant. This used to be a decent place with a good reputation but it's now terrible, expensive, and dirty. I had several chicken dishes and kabobs. The chicken korma came with 3 pieces of chicken, very small and wasn't great. It's like the restaurant has gotten super chincy now. Super cheap. My 4 items with tip was 70$ and the chicken they used maybe worth 3$ at most. The restaurant is just terribly dirty. No one picks up. Very dirty floors, dirty everything. The water didn't even taste right. And for 70$ for 4 small plates you get to set your own table, assemble your own utensils, get your own drinks. Clean off your own table. I ordered almost $100 worth of food and most of the curries didn't even taste fresh, except Nihari (a bit) Place is DIRTY!!! Disgusting. They need to remodel like now . Asshole ALERT! The owner/manager of this restaurant, to be specific Hamad's brother, major asshole. He has no customer service skills at all. He needs to go back to school. The naan was very fluffy and tasted good, however only the plain one was available. Menu on Yelp is slightly inaccurate and has a few extra dishes that they don't do such as the matter paneer. I was still a fan of the paneer masala, however. I also ordered the boneless tandoori chicken. It was rather dry, but that may be because I waited a little bit before eating it. I've heard so many good things about this legit place and I finally was able to check it out. They're still open with the SIP just their seating is closed. But still have lots of orders for pickup and to go. Their food is fresh, full of spice, and pretty authentic. I haven't found super authentic Indian food ever since my trip to northern India and this hit the spot! I'm pretty sure that if I lived near it, I'd definitely get it often. I love that they don't tame the flavors like some places do. Everything was really fresh and tasty. Tikka masala with a side of rice! Soo good and flavorful with a little kick of spicy. Chicken biryani. Also really tasty. The was very tender and moist too. Garlic naan. Just came out and was tasty on its own or to finish off the masala sauce. Mango lassi. We finally were in Dublin and looking forward to having some Shalimar. I called my order in and the gentleman on the phone proceeded to take my order. I had a hard time understanding the man but he seemed to understand my order. I reiterated to him that I wanted 3 chicken tikka masala. Finally the time was here to pickup my food. We got home and the 3 CTM was missing from the order. Not only was the CTM missing, but they threw in all the leftover bread they had, some too spicy to eat and some stale as a rock. They were closed now after their lunch session, so they didn't answer the phone and I decided to drive back. The cashier told me that we did not order any CTM. Some guy came from the back and said "NO CTM" and he walked back. This was a horrible experience. The food was old and they messed up my order after they said they confirmed it. I think everyone should know that when coming to this place you'll get nothing but good food but I can't say the same for the service they provide. PLAIN RUDE......that's why my family stop eating inside the restaurant. My problem has been with the same guy running the cash register every time I come in. My observation tells me he might be the owner and that's even worse. Our first time eating inside the restaurant I noticed that we were charge for something we didn't buy, So we let it go because I hate to make a scene. The 2nd time we ate there I gave the guy a $50.00 bill and he gave me a change like I only gave him a $20.00 bill. I finally had to say something. The 3rd time, you would think he remembered me from the last incident because I gave him another $50.00 and he does the same thing. Ugh! ~~~~If he is not the owner or manager by writing this, I hope they keep an eye on him. WHEN CUSTOMER PAY CASH HE DOESN'T ENTER IT ON THE CASH REGISTER. So since I love the food so much, I came back not once, but twice and the outcome is the same..........need I say more? For a very casual and inexpensive restaurant, I admire the quality of service and food that they offer. My hubby and I loved their Saag Paneer, Naan, Goat Curry, and Tandoori chicken. What they lacked in food presentation, compensated for the taste of their food. at first glance, I found their tandoori chicken dry and even burnt. But the moment I tried it, I was proven wrong. The chicken was tasty and juicy. I noticed that many of their patrons also ordered the Tandoori chicken. I am a big Paneer fan and would try any Paneer in Spinach sauce that has it. I can confidently say that this place is by far my favorite. I usually just eat the Paneer and dip it in the sauce. But foe their version, I couldn't help eating the leftover spinach sauce when the Paneer was all gone. Our kids loved their Naan, and so did I. It came out fresh from the oven. It was crunchy, but not hard. I was never very particular with ambiance or fancy resto settings. So the fast food atmosphere was quite all right with me. I hope they could help improve the communication barrier. My hubby had a hard time getting his orders taken. Back here again, after a really long hiatus. We decided to give it a try, after cooking some Chicken Karahi at home. We showed up a little after 7 pm, but there was hardly anyone there. Where were the crowds? By 8 pm when we left, every single table was taken. If you want a more relaxed (relatively speaking) dining experience, go early! The table numbering is also more obvious now. We got their Chicken Karahi, which was seasoned with a lot of ginger and has bone fragments in it. Apparently, this is "authentic", but I can't recommend it because it took a lot of work to eat around the tiny bone chips. It's not too spicy & has an orange oil slick on top. The tandoori lamb chops are delicious as always. Nice char and great flavor, fair amount of meat considering it's lamb. I thought it was a bit lean, but DH loved it. This one is served with onions. It is not spicy. Our favorite dish was the okra. This one was cooked with traditional spices and ginger, green chili peppers. It was spicy and had the orange oil slick, but it was oh-so-tasty. The okra was perfectly cooked and tender. DH said he encountered some fibrous bits, but I didn't notice any. We got the regular naan instead of the garlic and it was awesome. Super huge and fantastic flavor, toasted just right and not oily. I definitely prefer the regular over the garlic. DH ordered rice, but this time it was just basmati rice, no add ons like sautéed onion. It was fluffy and fine, nothing exciting here. Next time, I'll try looking for the other rice on the menu. Their free water was disgusting. It tasted like the plastic lining of the fridge that it was stored in. I drank their free chai instead, which was mild but good. However, they ran out and took the container away. Booo hooo! Overall, still a good place to eat, but you need to know what to order. read more

I am 62 and work for Uber Eats. I am at an age where Covid-19 could be a death sentence but I have to keep working to make ends meet. Let me also explain that my father died on Easter Sunday of Covid-19. I have been instructed to pick up orders from Shalimar twice over the past week. The first time I went to pick up an Uber order, I noticed that some of the staff were not wearing masks, so I told them that they all had to wear masks. The second time I went in to pick up an order yesterday none of the staff or customers were wearing masks. I took pictures and reported them to both Alameda County and Uber. These people clearly do not have any respect for each other and especially their customers. This restaurant is a danger to our community at this time of the Covid-19 pandemic. Why is this place still open? It's absolutely disgusting- none of the cooks/cashiers wear a mask. They're incredibly rude! I've seen the cashier take orders, cash/cards and then he touches the breads with his bare hands and packs them up - no gloves at all. Terrible customer service, they always make you wait at least 15-20 minutes more than what they say over the phone. In some cases they START making the food once you arrive at the restaurant to pick up the food. Blatant disregard for public safety as well. Every time I walk into their dirty restaurant, NONE of the employees are wearing a mask, even while preparing the food. There is one dude at the counter who cuts you off mid order to speak on the phone. Their BBQ items are always undercooked or overcooked as well. When you order a large amount of BBQ items, you would expect them to give you some condiments such as chatni, etc. However, they don't. Even when you ask them, they throw in one small chatni pack (for an order for 10+ tikkas) and even try to justify their stinginess and cost cutting when you ask for more.
