He just seems like a very caring person. The food was amazing, especially the chicken tikka masala. It's incredible. They also use chicken breast which is great. They also validate parking in the garage adjacent to the restaurant. It is always frustrating to find your new favorite place when you move, so I am glad to have found the spot! It is hard to find a restaurant that you can go to for different formalities, from casual to formal, from friends to your spouse, but they have done it with their service and ambience. But the food -- always vegan and vegetarian -- is absolutely delicious and holds very well. You can get a solid meal at less than $15, and feel absolutely light and full of energy immediately after (there does not appear to be a set price for takeout -- food appears to go $6.50 per pound). I especially love the lentils (lentil anything!), paneer and the samosas. The mango lassi is also pretty good, albiet a bit watery. The space, with the restaurant downstairs and the shop upstairs, also works very well. There is some outdoor seating -- but good luck with parking. They did come out fast, which is nice, but they tasted like they had been waiting. I told the server very clearly that I needed my curry very very mild or I could just order something else. He said they can make it super mild. When it came it was so spicy I could not eat more than a bit. We took it to go and trashed it. My husband's food was okay, but the meat was tough and dry. The rice was dry. We had to ask for some ice cubes for the warm ice tea they served. My coffee was excellent. They had to make it. The place is not cute, it is sort of a mess of chairs and it was clean, but not anywhere to my standards. Sadly, we will not be back.

I ordered the chicken biryani and samosa chaat, and thought both were excellent, especially the spicy and flavorful biryani. Of particular note, they appear to be using short-grain rice, instead of the usual basmati, which is a distinctive feature of Thalassery biryani. I will certainly be back to try the goat biryani and some of their other dishes. My one suggestion to the owners: instead of serving "wraps" made with "flatbread," have a menu of kati rolls on paratha. Most people are looking for authenticity, not fusion, and kati rolls could be the next big thing in LA. Just saying! If you're the kind of person who complains about having to pick spices out of your biryani, this probably isn't the place for you. But if you want authentic deliciousness, give Navaa a try. It's a welcome addition to the burgeoning Little India along Venice.
