Typically, good Indian food in California has been dominated by the Bay Area, but I have to give a special shoutout to Cali Tandoor for grabbing back some cred for SoCal. Walked in and saw four tables adjoined for a large Punjabi family on a Tuesday afternoon - unmistakable sign that this is going to be an authentic spot that HITS the spot. As soon as you sit down you're started off with crisp papadam and a couple of chutneys to snack on while you look at the menu. I ordered a mango lassi and it was insanely refreshing, uplifted by a flourish of rooh afza (rose syrup). The food was piping hot and bursting with flavour. The garlic naan was cooked to perfection and did not hold back on the garlic. Service was deliberate, friendly, and efficient. Could not ask for more. Do yourself a favour and sit your butt in the restaurant to eat. Indian food is always sullied by people getting lazy and ordering it through the apps. I came here for dinner with a friend and although we had a reservation, seating was wide open. The small plaza the restaurant is in has very limited parking, but free street parking was available. They have a note on their menu that items have increased in price, but I guess that's the time we live in these days. It does get rather pricey with all items being a la carte, but the chicken samosas were delicious, and so was the butter chicken with garlic naan. The staff is so attentive & kind! We frequent this restaurant almost weekly. My mom is an incredible cook & very picky about Indian food. So when I tell you this is the one place she doesn't say no to, that's saying something. They inherited a Thai restaurant that was a neighborhood staple for about 15 years. I think some of the earlier reviews need to take that into consideration. With that said, they have fully renovated the space! It's beautiful & modern. Definitely give it a try. Deducting half a star because there is zero ambiance if you choose to dine in - I would love if they added some decor to liven up the space. Went on a Friday night, and was pleasantly surprised by how cute and cosy this place was! It was full by the time we reached at 7:00 pm, and they have a good setting, and candle lit tables. The food was sooo good! I loved the chicken tikka masala, the Bhuna paneer and the naan, it was so authentic and delectable. 100% recommend trying these when you visit this restaurant. Some of the BEST Indian food in L.A....and. you'd never know it as they're not on any "best-of" lists that we've seen (not yet!). Also hiding in plain sight. Cali Tandoor is a surprisingly airy and spacious restaurant that takes up one corner of a very small strip mall. It's clean, well lit with a really nice interior, a well stocked bar and very friendly, very accommodating servers. We caught sight of the restaurant driving home and decided, out of the blue, to have lunch there. We had no expectations good or bad. Our order included lamb biryani, chicken korma, saag paneer, naan and mango lassis. And everything was...DELICIOUS! Absolutely marvelous. And so fresh! The food takes a while to come, the reason being that everything is very clearly being made to order. You can taste it, fresh ginger, warm spices, etc. Even the bread: homemade and just baked! It is for this reason that I'd advise not going there if you're in a rush. Plan on a leisurely lunch or dinner; you'll find it worth the wait. I wish I could give this place more stars. I came here in a group of 3 on a Friday night around 6:40pm, we had no reservation but were seated immediately and it wasn't busy at all! If you are a vegetarian, this is definitely a good place for you - every single food option had a vegetarian equivalent. Also, the food portions are HUGE, perfect for groups and we even ended up with two boxes of leftovers still. This was *not* my first time having Indian food and I am certainly no stranger to curry. I felt that the curry had a bit toooo much butter/oil. It didn't sit well and triggered a lot of acid reflux for all of us. I really enjoyed the vegetable biryani, it was VERY flavorful. I wish the garlic naan was a little bit softer all around, the edges were pretty crispy and it sort of broke off into the curry like chips. We ordered another naan that was filled with potatoes and that was really good - I think when I paired it with the curry, it helped soak up the oily parts of the curry. The mango lassi was pretty good, not overly sweet at all. The vegetarian falafel curry dish was OK. You could realllyyyyy taste that it was falafel - since we had a vegetarian in our group, I didn't eat much of that dish. It was very very quiet in there. I'm not sure if there was music playing but if there was then the volume was very low. I think the silence of the place stood out because we were 1 of 3 groups in there. Finally tried this place! Food was plentiful! Often Indian restaurants can be pricey with small dishes and this restaurant had nicer portions. Tried the Butter chicken, paneer & daal, all delicious!! The lamb biryani was very tasty but was a tad too salty for me but again, good portion of yummy lamb! The garlic naan was great but would skip the chicken stuffed naan as it was a bit dry. Wish they had a lamb stuffed Naan instead would help with the moisture. Will definitely go back to try more dishes. Service was wonderful and polite. Got more crowded as the evening wore on, since we had an earlier dinner. Glad they're doing well!! Nice decor too! Bar looked nicely stocked though I'm not a big drinker. read more

Since my last review we've eaten at the restaurant a few times. We usually get One order of potatoe samosas, the Lamb Briani which is great and the rice is usually outstanding and moist. We get a garlic naan and the chicken tikka Marcella. Tonight the chicken didn't taste moist and freshly made so it wasn't tender . I don't know if they cook the chicken or buy pre processed but it definitely lacked tonight! When I spoke to the waitress she said she would discuss this with the kitchen. I was in Culver City, Los Angeles, and was feeling really hungry, so I decided to search for a restaurant nearby. I found one on the map and decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, the experience wasn't great the food was not at all good, and I didn't enjoy it at all. When I arrived, I asked the person at the front what their special dish was, and he recommended the karahi goat with garlic naan. I agreed right away and placed my order. When the food arrived, the naan was hard to eat, burnt at the corners, and extremely tough. The goat curry wasn't cooked well either it seemed like they had used frozen meat that was simply reheated, and it was still hard to chew. The curry itself tasted just okay. I was really disappointed, but since I was already there and quite hungry, I ended up eating what I could. Later, the staff offered me plain rice. I asked if it was complimentary because, at many similar restaurants, rice is typically served with curry. He told me it was around $3 I told him ok However, when I went to pay my bill, I was surprised to see I had been charged $6 for the rice. Honestly, I wouldn't have cared if he had just informed me upfront it's not about the money, but about transparency. Overall, I didn't enjoy the food, and the service was just okay. I'd rate the service 3 stars and the food 1 star. I was only able to finish my meal because I was starving otherwise, I would have left. I'm definitely not going back. read more
