I was glad to see more upscale Indian restaurants are opening in LA. Fitoor seemed like it fit the bill. Went there for lunch on a Sunday. The place was moderately busy; but, there appeared to be only 2 servers and a busboy taking care of the entire main dining room and the patio. They seemed pretty stressed. The noise level was higher than I expected. It was due to several families appeared to have run into each other and they were all standing around having loud conversations while being oblivious to other guests' personal space. As far as the food, the menu looked enticing offering upscale dishes with ingredients like truffle. Good concept; unfortunately the execution was a fail. The truffle mushroom kulcha had no truffle flavor; not even the 2 slices of truffle on top. The crust was quite tough; so much so that it was difficult to cut even with a steak knife. My jaw was sore after chewing on the crust for a while. The calamari was also quite tough and chewy. The purple potato ragda patty was the only dish I thought was decent. The black truffle jhinga biryani special was also completely void of truffle flavor and a bit overly salty. Then when the check came it had a "Surcharge Fee" of 3.5% without any explanation. It turned out to be a fee to help pay for the kitchen staff. This hit one of my pet peeves. Why is it not the restaurant's responsibility to pay their staff a fair wage? We are already paying for the meal and a 20% tip and they just sneaked in a mandatory "surcharge". While it was just a few dollars it was more of an issue of principles. Outstanding and different elevated modern Indian cuisine. We've been meaning to try this place for a while and just hadn't gotten around to it. Now that we have tried it, we'll be back again soon! You know how sometimes all the dishes at an Indian restaurant start tasting the same? That is most definitely not the case here. Every dish had a unique flavor profile, and some were quite different from anything I'd had before. Purple potato ragda patty: This was by far my favorite - it was practically a work of art. Sweet, sour, savory, tangy, salty. So good, like a party in my mouth. Calangute calamari: Had a nice crisp exterior. The accompaniments, especially the passion fruit salsa, were incredible. Truffle mushroom kulcha: If you like mushrooms, you should definitely get this beautiful puffed bread. Asado branzino fillet: Slightly spicy and salty, more filling than you might expect Butter chicken: A well done Indian standard Pheni nest: A delightful, sweet but not too sweet dessert. The ambiance is beautiful, great décor, trendy vibe, and a nice Santa Monica atmosphere so it's definitely a pleasant place to sit and enjoy a meal. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the setting. The samosa chaat was probably one of the worst I've had. It lacked balance and flavor, and nothing about it felt fresh or authentic. The paneer tikka was also pretty underwhelming and bland, you really needed the chutney to give it any kind of taste. Even the naan was just okay, nothing special for a restaurant at this price point. Service was decent but not memorable. The staff was polite, yet things felt a little slow and not very attentive, especially considering the restaurant wasn't that busy when we went on a Sunday. A friend and I had been waiting for months to come here and were prepared to be blown away but the experience was honestly pretty meh especially for what we paid. Cocktails were gorgeously presented but some flavors (like cardamom) were barely detectable. Avocado burrata chaat was also gorgeous but the three tiny drops of tamarind chutney were grossly insufficient. We asked for and received more and it really brought the dish to like and balanced all the creaminess of cheese and avocado. The lamb rogan Josh needed at least 6-8 hours more slow cooking both for tenderness as well as development of flavors in the sauce. It mostly tasted like tomato sauce. The artichoke saag was definitely the standout of the meal. We skipped dessert as nothing really spoke to us. Ambience is nice but music selection is odd - would have preferred some nice ragas to the blaring Grateful Dead and Bjork. Service was fine but our waiter seemed very unsure when we asked questions. My favorite dishes are the Dahi Kachori, Truffle Mushroom Kulcha, and the chicken Biryani. The best dessert is the chocolate nemesis and I love the jaggery ice cream. The rest of the desserts are way too sweet and not as good as their traditional versions. The restaurant interior is designed beautifully and great for a romantic date or groups. The sauce had great flavor but was really oily. Pulled Butter Chicken Kulcha - Overall this was good but the bread was too oily. I also thought the flavor would be more pronounced but the butter chicken was super mild. Even a little salt would've helped. Sweet Chili Broccoli - The best item we got. Came here to celebrate a post-engagement dinner, so we were really hoping for a memorable experience. Unfortunately, it ended up being pretty disappointing. The restaurant was mostly empty when we visited, which made the service even more confusing. The staff came off as pretty rude and rarely checked in on us throughout the meal. We often had to look around just to get someone's attention, which isn't what you expect--especially when the place isn't busy. The food itself was also just okay. Nothing was terrible, but nothing really stood out either. For a special occasion dinner, we were hoping for something a bit more memorable than just mediocre dishes. I loved my dining experience at Fitoor! We went walking on Oceanside near Santa Monica and were looking for a place to get lunch, and Fitoor popped up on the list! The ambiance of this place was great and probably one of the nicest of Indian Restaurants that I have been to in Los Angeles and they had both indoor and outdoor seating. They have a brunch special and also you can choose from their main menu as well. We started with the Dahi Kachuri and wow, this was such a fun take on a classic Indian snack dish. I was so impressed by their foam yogurt presentation and the Kachuri also tasted great! We also got the tofu tosadas ~ the tofu was made really well and I loved all of the garnished and the presentation. For our main meal, we had the Jackfruit Chestnut Korma and the Traditional Chicken Sheekh Masala with Garlic Naan. The presentation of the Jackfruit was so fun where they come and poor the curry in front of you and I loved the flavor of the chicken. We asked for a table with an ocean view and got to soak in some sun and reflection of the waves in the distance. Service does need some improvement but the food made up for it. This restaurant is stunning and massive - I can definitely see it accomodating large groups. They serve upscale, fusion Indian food! Welcome to the Rajah's Palace. It's as if Alinea woke up in Rajasthan. The interior is gold leaf as far as the eye can see in this place which is the size of a roller rink. The background loop was mercifully Americanized. Everything from Wind Chimes dubbed over a canned Rhythm Track to Indian Surf Music. (Think Green Onions on a Sitar). I arrived early at this immense space. Every dining room was off limits even though the place was essentially empty as there was just enough staff to take care of the tables in the Bar. It was either a high top and dangling feet until the blood pools in your ankles or go across the street to Orla. I opted to stay. I chose wisely. Initially, the staff gathered together to chat and text while I drummed fingers on the table. They kibitzed, and shuffled away like a herd of turtles. No matter, I've been ignored by amateurs and experts. There, I've said it. Eventually I made eye contact with a Server who wandered over and then finally, the party started. The Decor is lavish. The place is sexy and gorgeous. Perhaps some extra dough could've been tossed a training? The Bar: It's plentiful and deep. You want it? They have it. Indian Beers, Signature Cocktails, Spirits and a lovely Wine List. What's to eat? Everything. You'd have to work hard to make a mistake here or order something that wasn't terrific. The kitchen is confident, bold, and courageous. They cook what they'd all like to eat themselves. So, you're in for a treat or many treats if you do it right...overorder. My dinner began with Eggplant Kulcha which is basically a pizzette. A six inch pizza topped with Smoky Mashed Eggplant, Cherry Tomatoes, with a pile of lightly dressed Baby Arugula. Your Server, who is now at your beck and call instantly, will bring you a blade to make Jack the Ripper smile. Quarter the Kulcha and dig in. There is a welcome slow crawl of heat right behind your first bite. This was definitely an attention getter. The Peshwari Lamb Seekh Kebab was a supersized tube of Lamby bliss. It was at least 12 inches long and looked a hothouse English Cucumber or Rasputin in the shower. One end had a subtle Mint foam and the other end had a tiny mound of Theha which is a hot, hot condiment made from Horseradish, Red Chilies, Garlic, and Ground Peanuts if I'm correct. Time to grab that Garlic Naan and start building a wrap including some of the Theha and Creamy Red Onion Slaw also on the plate and some Crunchy Raita which was slightly salty Yogurt topped with either Fregola or Israeli Cous Cous. Now we're talkin' if you can understand me with my mouth full? This beast was so delicious it doesn't do credit to delicious. Do not forget to order this. Reinvented Paneer Lababdaar was truly reinvented. Usually Paneer are little cubes of Farmer's Cheese at the bottom of a clump of Spinach. Here, the Paneer was an artistic hefty disk floating on top of a deep bowl of Chopped Onion, Spicy Tomato, Ground Cashews, and quarters of Pickled Pearl Onions. Grab your Roti and swab it generously with the contents of the bowl. Yes, you can do this in public but ask for a short stack of linen napkins before you do. The final act was the grand finale. Multani Chicken Shawma loaded onto a mini-Trompe (a Vertical Roaster) and garnished with fat batons of Roasted Zucchini and Bell Peppers, along with a mound of Hummus right from the Tandoori Oven. The Chicken Chunks were absolutely as good as Chicken can be. Tender, spicy, charred yet moist and juicy as you slice it off the spike without launching it across the dining room. I'll leave it to you to arm wrestle your dining companion for the last Naan. Oh, just order two more. Fitoor I wish I could fit more chew and chutney into full belly. read more

The food was absolutely delicious and well presented, yummy mocktails and my friend had a delicious espresso martini, the decor and design of the restaurant is super cute, tons of seating indoor and outdoor, our server was super friendly. It's great for brunch, lunch, and/or a date night. The dishes are loaded with spice! Be warned, they can be spicy! The kulcha is a must try! Imagine a naan stuffed with truffle deliciousness. It's very reminiscent of a calzone but the flavor profile is very different. The drinks are well balanced but pack a punch. You definitely want to sip and not chug. I really wanted to like Fitoor, but unfortunately the experience fell short in several ways. First and foremost, what is the obsession with liquid nitrogen on Indian food? I understand its use for desserts, but on a samosa? They added a cold layer of corn and coconut (clearly treated with liquid nitrogen), which completely ruined the dish. The samosa itself actually tasted good, but the icy corn and coconut on top made no sense and threw off the entire experience. This was not it. Next, the traditional chicken seekh masala. Tandoori ground chicken? Absolutely not. I'm not sure what cooking technique was used, but it genuinely tasted undercooked. The texture was extremely mushy, almost as if the ground chicken was shaped by hand, laid on a pan, and put straight into the oven, definitely not cooked in a tandoor. It was unpleasant and honestly concerning. Then there's the pricing. One lamb shank for $40? At that price point, I would expect at least two pieces or something more substantial. Another confusing choice was shawarma on an Indian menu. While it could work, I didn't order it, and given how disappointed I was with what I did try, I'm not sure I would. That said, the chili chicken and the daal were probably the best things we ordered and the only dishes I actually enjoyed. Overall, the food looked and smelled great, but the quality and taste did not deliver, especially for how overpriced everything is. Service and ambiance were also a major miss. The first impression matters, and the host/front desk person sets the tone. When we walked in, the hostess was sipping on her cocktail and greeted us with a casual "Sup!" I've never experienced that at a restaurant claiming to be upscale. It immediately felt unprofessional and off-putting. The entertainment added to the confusion. There were belly dancers performing to Arabic music at an Indian restaurant, which felt completely mismatched. If anything, Indian classical or folk dancers would make more sense. On top of that, there were women pushing carts around offering shots, at that point, I genuinely didn't know if I was in a nightclub or a high-end restaurant. Overall, the concept feels very confused. Are we here for elevated Indian cuisine? Wow! I'm so happy I tried Fitoor the food was excellent, the ambience beautiful and the service friendly. I visited on a weekend a tried a little from both their brunch menu and the main menu and It was all great. They have these paneer tostadas on the brunch menu that I'm obsessed with the chicken tinga tostadas are great too, both Packed with so much flavor and textures, they're a must! The warm & flaky puffs are also pretty great From the main menu my favorite had to be the tandoori curry leaf prawns they were bursting with flavor and just the perfect amount of heat that awakened the tastebuds but didn't linger for too long. There were more great dishes like the Kulchas, this was like a puffy stuffed naan. I don't want to spoil the whole experience for you just get in there and try this place out sooner than later and save room for dessert because the crème brûlée is very special the way they make it. Great experience! We went here thinking food would be over priced, UN authentic however we were very surprised! Great service, nice atmosphere and VERY GOOD AUTHENTIC FLAVORUL INDIAN/PAKISTANI food. Beautiful restaurant! Nice ambiance. It's nice to have an Indian restaurant that isn't stuffy or classically decorated. They try to make it miami/nyc style with performers every 30 mins doing belly dancing. It's fun but also random in a place that isn't really a party spot. We had the bhel which was ok. Very dry. The butter chicken Naan of course which is definitely a must do. The avocado and burrata was interesting. Lamb kebab was very buttery and delicious. So was the chicken seekh curry. Almost too buttery. Everything was maybe too savory and heavy on the creaminess. We left feeling bloated. Overall great experience with a few things I'd change. I would've liked some more traditional Indian dishes like a classic Tikka masala style with traditional chicken. The kebab for app and seek style in the curry was a little too kebab for me. read more

I came here for lunch on a Thursday. There was plenty of seating and was seated right away. They had a "Power Lunch" menu where you can choose an appetizer, entree, and a side for $35. I went with the peshawari lamb seekh kebab for my appetizer. The presentation was really fun. It comes with mint foam on each end of the kebabs. You don't know it at first, but it's actually pretty spicy. Overall, delicious. For my entree, I got the reinvented paneer lababdaar. This was not spicy and very creamy. Great flavor and comes with a big piece of paneer in the middle. For my side, I got the garlic naan. It came out nice and hot. It was perfect for soaking up all that masala. I was a little skeptical because it wasn't super busy, but I was really glad I tried this place. Super delicious and the presentation is great. read more

This is the most beautiful Indian restaurant I've been to. The marble flooring and gold colored faucets in the restroom made it very fancy. I like there was lotion with a very nice fragrance next to the sink. I came for lunch on Thursday and the place wasn't crowded at all. I enjoyed the privacy from sitting inside and no one near my table. There's abundant seating inside and many patio seating. The little lamp on the table brightened up the dimmed lighting from the ceiling. I ordered the open fire chicken kebab, traditional chicken seekh masala, and garlic naan from the power lunch menu. The restaurant was pretty nice inside. Went for dinner here and ordered several small plates so we could experience the various offerings. Although the food presentation was excellent, the food itself was just average. Also the amount of food you get for the cost was not worth it. We just left the restaurant and I already feel compelled to write this review. From the moment we walked in, this place felt off--and unfortunately, it never got better. The two hostesses who "greeted" us looked like they'd rather be anywhere else. After we gave our name for the reservation, one of them silently grabbed menus and just started walking toward the dining room. No "follow me," no acknowledgment--nothing. She dropped the menus on the table without a word and walked away. We sat there for about 10 minutes with no server before finally asking one of the hostesses for water. When our waiter eventually showed up, there was no welcome--just a blunt "what do you want?" We asked for recommendations, and he rattled off a long list of dishes at lightning speed with zero explanation, then immediately asked again what we wanted. We asked if it was better to order everything at once or pace it out, and he told us to order it all so he could "space it out." That didn't happen. At one point, three hot dishes hit the table at the same time. When we mentioned to the food runner that we expected a more staggered experience so we wouldn't have to rush through dishes before they got cold, she seemed annoyed and said, "I'll tell your server," before walking off. She obviously never told him. Our waiter barely checked on us--aside from one quick "you good?" as he passed by. We actually think he might have been the manager, which makes the experience even worse. Another server boxed our food later on, but he wasn't much better--rude and disengaged. We overheard him being warm and attentive to another table, even asking if they were celebrating a birthday. Ironically, it was my birthday (and it was noted on the reservation), but no one acknowledged it at all. Overall, the service was inattentive, cold, and borderline dismissive from start to finish. It might have been forgivable if the food made up for it--but it didn't. After looking forward to trying this place for so long, the whole experience was just disappointing. Save your money and go to Roots instead. They have amazing authentic food and actually value their customers. But if you want trendy vibes with mediocre food, this is your spot. Valet was also $20 and then and extra $2 for using a credit card. read more
