The food court part definitely rang true, but I was surprised at how small the grocery store was. I think Metro Spice Mart by Presidential Towers is 20 times bigger than the store here, though it was nice to see that they had fresh injera. You can probably find the basics here, but the grocery part definitely takes a backseat to the food court part, which I'm not exactly complaining about. The food court has a really nice menu with pictures all across one of the walls. Everything looked and smelled really great, and I definitely want to try more of the menu next time! We got some paratha, samosas, kheer, halwa, chai, and a beef roll recently. The paratha took a while since it was made fresh, but the buttery flavor was superb and I'd definitely order it again. Would definitely get the kheer again, too. The samosas came with a yogurt and a tamarind sauce, which I appreciated. The beef roll was a little dry, though a decent size. I don't generally like halwa and this one had a perfumey flavor my family didn't like. The chai was fine. I like how it's near a bunch of other large Asian grocery stores. Next time I'm in the area and have a hankering for Indian/Pakistani food, will definitely be back! read more

Butter chicken and samosas were 10/10 amazing. Mango lassi too. The samosa was perfectly crunchy. The chutney had a subtle heat. Very very memorable dishes. The chicken biryani had bones it which I was really hoping it wouldn't. The website said boneless :( All in all, I will definitely order again and adjust my order. Ive been coming to this place since i was boy in the early 2000s. Service is always nice & kind. Their ambience is laid back. Their food is delicious & consistent. Everything on their menu is solid. My personal favorites are their beef rolls, chicken Biryani, butter chicken, chana masala & their Aloo Qeema. Don't skip dessert, they have an array of sweets, try their Rasmalie & Kheer (thank me later). They also have a grocery store & parking as-well. You can't go wrong with this place. read more

Came here on a Monday night & wasn't busy. & The spot felt very local to the community. Great hole in the wall grocery store & restaurant spot! I appreciate that there is a big wall of the menu that had pictures of all the different foods to make ordering easy. The food was flavorful & had just a right amount of spice. I was a bit disappointed with the paratha, taste was there but texture fell flat with how hard it was. The restaurant up felt very homey with plenty of seating. I've only been here once, but it was pretty flavorful. You'll smell the food from the parking lot, which may not be everyone's thing but I take it as a good sign. I ordered the Chicken Biryani and the portion was pretty good. The rice was flavorful and chicken was well spiced, but be careful because I did find some bones in a few bites. The store itself is half restaurant/half specialty grocery store. It may take a little while for the food to be ready so I recommend you browse the shelves as they have a lot of things you wouldn't find at a local grocery store. I personally have been coming here for a long time, its basically another ghareeb nawaz. Issue i have with this place is they are in a crowded, tiny parking lot. The food is decent, nothing crazy good but can eat it daily. Uncle at the counter is nice, but the place can be a little..dingy at times. New to the area, I was craving chicken curry and a quick Google search showed me this was a block away. I placed an order for Naan and Chicken Curry and headed out the door to pick it up. Part grocery store / restaurant / convenience store, the food is prepared in the back and brought up to the cashier. I arrived before my food was ready and had a chance to walk around a little. Very standard items. Lots of people just sitting around hanging out. Looks like this might be a regular hang out spot for some of the locals in the area. Took my food to go and, sadly, was very disappointed. The chicken was very greasy and there wasn't much meat on it. It was sad that the rice was the best part of the dish. The food is so good. The portions are generous and reasonably priced. At times I think I've become addicted to aloo palak with naan. Their little store has a very good selection of beans, spices, and black teas. Their atmosphere is family style. The service is fast and polite. We got the chicken curry and it was really oily, we are a little throw off when we saw the amount of oil there was and the chicken spine.

Their curry was so watery and lacked flavor. The naan was okay, but felt a lot drier than what I would have liked. Very disappointed because this place had such good reviews. Good food. I would recommend them for Pakistani traditional breakfast of Halwa Puri. It's mostly a restaurant with an attached grocery store. Menu is extensive with multiple options. I also liked their Paya and Nehari. Although the ambiance setting is not the greatest but it's a clean environment with delicious food. They do have a limited parking. We'd been picking up their samosas and beef rolls for years for lunch on the go. Both are great and a good price. Not gonna lie, sometimes they're greasy though. If you're getting samosas, get them close to a major meal time to lower the chances of too much grease. In the past couple of years, we've been ordering entrees for delivery, always enough for a couple days of leftovers. Shan is consistently better than just about any place on Devon we have tried. Great chicken biryani with AMAZING basmati rice. Lots of bones, but whatever. It's delicious. Their curries are also great, and I love their aloo palak. Came in for brunch. Ambiance is cafeteria like and service was pleasant. FYI Families generally sit in the more private section in the back. This is a hidden gem for sure. Great spot for really casual, cheap indian food. The restaurant is pretty fast service, and is attached to a very small supermarket in the back. Service is very friendly and pretty prompt. They cook foods in the kitchen in the back, although some of it can be microwaved if you want the tempt to be warmer. They have a pretty extensive veg and nonveg option list, and nothing is extremely spicy. Food comes out quickly. You have to pay for rice and naan separately. There is a desert section at the front as well which always has a very wide selection of Indian deserts. read more

I've only ever had take out from them, but they've never disappointed. Whenever my friend would come over, he'd always pick up food from Shan's (even though he lives in West Loop. Ordering seems easy enough, he would just call it in and by the time he got up there, the food would be ready. By the time he got back to our place (except for maybe the samosas), the rest of the food would be piping hot (meaning it was super fresh). It's also packaged really well...in preparation of possible spills. The food: Samosa - a bit on the large size, sometime they'll have a kick, but other than that their pretty good. They have a slightly thicker dough. The filling could use a pinch more of salt however. Veggie Biriyani - delicious and goes great with the daal Daal - we've tried a couple different daals and they've all been super delicious. I prefer the yellow daal and the mixed daal isn't bad either Omelet - it's good, well made TLDR: they're out there for people that are living in the city, but they're delicious. 2 samosas are filling. Some time ago I caught a few reviews written by "trusted" Yelp friends and figured I'd bookmark the spot. The time came the other night when I had the chance to grab some late night grub and figured, why not try this out. I'd always wondered about their name and why foods is mentioned rather than restaurant or etc. I came to realize this is a grocery store, gift & snack shop and they sell Indo / Paki style sweets as well. (BTW I hate having to mention that it's Indian or Pakistani food, we all ate the same shit back in the day (when it was one country) and now there's a difference in entree names.. i.e. Butter Chicken = Chicken makhni. Some would say it's a little different, but hey, Indian food is different whether it's served Northern or Southern style as well.) Compared to food on Devon, the price was affordable and the flavor was quality. Also, no complaints of stomach discomfort, unnecessary gas or bloating. A hidden gem, a stone's throw away from the New Chinatown on Argyle Street. Almost always get the Biryani for eat in or take out. Not once has it gone wrong in either taste or service. Each bite takes me back in time to the Mughal Empire when farm to table wasn't a social movement but instead was simply all there was. People sit eating their meals, taking pleasure in being able to relax if just for a moment before diving back into their busy chaotic lives. It seems to be a crossroads for Chicagoan from all walks of life. The food is authentic as are those operating this little oasis. First of all, it's super authentic! Like Hot! Super flavorful! Everything is intense! As it should be. The Nihari is different than other places; it had a deep rich gravy without much curry flavor! Lots of meat! It was amazing! Similarly, the Naan, was more Lebanese style than Indian. Biryani had a lot of lamb and a big taste too! Some interesting stuff, but the food has been hit or miss for me. I liked the butter chicken even though it didn't have much extra sauce, like when I've had it at other places. The aloo mutter gajar was tasty too. Frontier chicken was bland. Loved the nehiri, but you don't want to see the layer of fat after refridgerating it. Paya was not for me and also turns solid, butal also turns solid if cooled (but with collegen, not grease, i assume. I ordered the Lamb Biryani and it was perfection. Flavorful, spiced well, generous portions of lamb layering the bottom of the tray, and enough for three-four meals (for one person). If you've eaten in, you know this place is a hole in the wall attached to a small grocery store. It reminds me of the places in Korea that are open for long hours and cater to cab drivers and folks working night shifts by offering wholesome meals for cheap and without any frills. This is exactly what you get with Shan Restaurant. No frills, delicious food that is going to fill you up without emptying your wallet. Highly recommend. read more

Remember the Babu Baat episode of Seinfeld where Jerry recommends Babu open a restaurant featuring the foods of his native Pakistan? This place endearingly reminded me of that episode! Shan Restaurant features Pakistani-Indian food and unlike Babu's empty restaurant, it was quite busy while we were there! And serving great food at an affordable price, why wouldn't they be? I went with some longtime residents of the neighborhood that had never heard of Shan. While ordering, the waiter (owner/cook?) kept suggesting dishes to us, and actually made us order them. It was evident he was very proud of his food and he wanted to share the joy! And I'm glad he did. We started off with samosas which were savory and came with two great sauces, a cucumber yogurt and the other a sweet/hot red sauce that was amazing. If Shan bottled it, I would put that sh*t on everything! My main order was the veggie Pakora Curry, which were rolled veggie balls smothered in a yogurt curry sauce. They had just the right amount of spice and it was excellent. My only recommendation is that Shan serve the veggie dishes with rice. The dine-in price was incredibly affordable $4.50, and I wouldn't have minded adding a few bucks for rice or couscous to go with it. My friends got two variations on spicy chicken- one looked like a typical "Dynamite Chicken" and the other was the Frontier Chicken. The both got rave reviews and looked good. We also shared the popular Chana Masala, chickpeas served with ginger, garlic and onions. That dish was spicy! We got a few breads with our meals, the Naan and the Paratha. Great additions to our meal. Shan Restaurant isn't flashy. Don't bring a date here! Unless you've sealed the deal already, and the date is with your wife. The fact that it's connected to a convenience store and in a strip mall will not win you points otherwise. But the fact that you're in the know about a place where only Pakistani and Indians are eating their native food might win you points. Another fabulous dive restaurant on my list! Went here tonight, latenight, and the food was GHEE-licious! Large portions, and v. cheap. Watch out for small bone fragments, but other than that - fantastic. Lots of cab drivers hanging out here, so you know it's authentic. It's a little grocery in addition to a sit down restaurant, I've lived in this 'hood for ten years now, and am bummed that I didn't discover this place until now. I had a taste for Indian food the other day and I performed a Yelp search and saw this place. I was waiting for a plumber so delivery was gonna need to happen. Some good friends of mine (Kyle H, Sabrina C & Erika G ) had written positive reviews about this place so I had to check it out. I looked at the menu and saw Chicken Makhani which seems to be one of their most popular dishes. I ordered naan as well but they didnt offer garlic naan, just regular naan so I went naan-less. My food showed up in close to 30 mins as I dont really live far from the place lol. The chicken makhani was delicious and mildy spicy as expected, but I was bothered as they did not give me rice as most Indian/pakistani places do. They gave me lettuce instead which has never really happened before in my long history of eating this type of food. I assume I need to order the rice as well next time. read more

Very, very sad. I couldn't talk the Mr. into making a run either. So I start playing around on Grubhub (I can order online and not even speak to someone? Even better!) and come across Shan's. Indian/Pakistani? I'm IN. Grubhub said it would be there in an hour. We had a doorbell ring within 40 mins. Delivery guy was nice. Order was perfect. Samosas: heaven in a triangle shaped pastry shell. Mmmmm. I wish it came with some sort of spicy chuttney but... still yum. Huge too... much bigger than many places for even less... onl$1 each. Chicken Mikhani: yuuuuum. I wish there had been a little more chicken in there but, it was an awesome dish. Lamb biryani: AMAZING. The best of the bunch. A HUGE portion for a mere $8.99. I generally don't even eat lamb but I tore into it like a savage. It didn't even know what hit it. Paratha and naan: good. I wish I hadn't ordered both... they were HUGE portions. Next time, only the paratha. Super great for soaking up all the gravy in the chicken dish. My only complaint was that I requested all the food be as spicy as they could make it... and it definitely wasn't spicy. Then again, we have very, very high tollerance for spice. Never fear, I keep a stash of incredibly hot curry powder on hand for such a reason. We will CERTAINLY be ordering from them again. Without a doubt. The craving for Indian food hit me hard a couple of nights ago while moving into my new place in the Uptown area. Immediately, I thought about a place that I'd had food from with a friend not too long ago in the neighborhood, but Google let me know that my dreams of going there were dashed - they closed at 11pm and it was 10:57pm. I hopped back on Google and low and behold, I found Shan Foods, who didnt close until late. I immediately tossed (literally) the rest of my groceries in the car and flew down the street! They were very much so open!!! I decided to take a risk. Upon walking to the door, I saw that they actually dont close until 12:30am. YES!!! I went in, grabbed a menu, and ordered Chicken Makhani, rice, and naan. The Chicken Makhani is essentially the same as Butter Chicken. The flavors complimented the chicken so well and the spice was just right. The side of rice was enough to feed a small village, but cooked perfectly. The naan was baked thicker than others that I have had, but it was great for dipping into the Makhani with. The guys behind the counter were very nice and we engaged in conversation as I waited for my food, which ended with them tossing in a free samosa and kheema (if Im not mistaken). Both delish! My order was fresh and ready to go in about 15 minutes. Shan's is definitely a place to grab a bite to eat for lunch if you work in the area or are heading home and have a taste for some good Indian. To sit and eat, well, the interior is nothing to be envious of: there's a spacious area with plenty of tables and chairs and its connected to their grocery store. That doesnt bother me at all though.
