What a disappointment, we ordered 3 dishes and the waitress managed to mess up on 2 of them. Instead of admitting their mistakes, they tried to pass the dishes off...and when that didn't work, they turn the blame on us, the customers. They finally admitted to have sent us the wrong dishes when the other table also complaint about their dishes being wrong. Poorly trained serving staff with terrible attitude and customer services. Horrible customer service, don't go there! I have been frequenting this place for half a year only because it's close by so I can grab some food after work when I don't have time to cook. Today I order a dish which is noted not spicy on the menu, but i believe they put in the most spicy pepper there ( the green thin one). My tears bust out since I cannot handle spicy. The waitress said this is the way they prepare dish. I asked for a replacement and they said since the food is touched they will not either replace or refund it because "if the food is not touched, they can still sell the dish to other customers"!!! This is the most disgusting I eve heard in restaurant that they even try to resell food that's returned by customer. For your own hygiene Please don't go this restaurant. Their waitress even come over to my desk scolding me for eating the food. She glanced at my plate and judged how I eat my food, and raised her voice at me in front of all my customers. When I asked for manager she keeps yelling "I am the manager". I don't know where thats true or not, but don't think I will go to a place that treat their long term customer like a piece of dirt. I love ethnic restaurants and the more ethnic the better. I rarely know what to expect hence rarely am I disappointed. Usually there is a helpful staff person who helps to shed light on the menu items. Enter Shanghai Bun. My wife requested General Tso chicken, white meat. A standard. The lovely waitress did not understand what 'white meat' meant. She did not speak English, but to her credit, could utter 'I am sorry', and I could see the pain in her eyes. She brought reinforcement but even the other young waiter could not understand what 'white meat' meant. As for myself, I gave up and ordered by number. I got a huge bowl of soup for two (I wanted only a cup for myself) and 10 seconds later, the main course. I totally gave up, I didn't touch the food, knowing that the main course would be cold by the time I finish the soup. The waitress stopped by again and offered help and an apology. Obviously, one of us was in the wrong place, very likely it was me, because the restaurant and management did not make any effort to accommodate non-Chinese speaking people. The noodle dishes are delicious. But the only problem is the service. It feels like they are not welcome Asians. The short hair host at the register been giving me a hard time to seat in a booth seat. No matter how many people we are, she never take ask to the booth seat. The clientele is majority Chinese with non-Chinese guests who are foodie types who have been exposed to Chinese food of the non-Americanized variety. If you are the type that travels to Philly or NYC Chinatown just for food, then you are likely to enjoy Shanghai Bun's offerings. If you prefer an Americanized version of Chinese food, go someplace else and don't occupy a table that would otherwise go to a grateful customer. Their soups are mainstays. The mapo tofu is quite good even if it's not as hot as a true Szechuan dish. The soup dumplings are very good too. Saves me a trip to Chinatown to find this jewel in central NJ. read more

Some of the finest and most authentic Chinese food that I have had anywhere including Philadelphia and New York waitresses are very helpful as long as you can speak Chinese ,if not they have a manager that speaks perfect English who is pleasant and very knowlegeable.The food Is skillfully prepared with moderate use of garlic and other strong seasonings so each dish is distinct and well balanced.Their dumplings both soup ,steamed and panfriedare outstanding as is almost every dish .Standouts are thesoups especially the Shanghai wonton soup ,scallion pancakes and any noodle dish. It's a husband and wife team that run the restaurant the husband works in the kitchen supervising the hot preparation and the wife is in the front Supervising the preparations of all noodles and dumplings which you can see behind the glass wall. Real Shanghainese food! It is good to have another Chinese restaurant in Mercer County that is not Americanized. Shanghai Park in Princeton Shopping Center has stagnated and needs the competition. Soups were authentic and very good - niu rou tang mian (beef noodle soup), shanghai wuntun tang (Shanghai wonton soup), and xueyu xuecai mixian (shrimp and mustard green noodles). The Shanghainese dim sum was uneven. Xiaolong bao (Pork Soup Dumplings), while handmade on the spot, was bland. Niurou jiabing (sesame beef sandwich) and jiucai xiahe (shrimp and leek potstickers) were very good. Cu chao mian (Shanghai fried noodles), always a measure of a good Shanghainese restaurant, were OK and the serving was small. Service was OK; hopefully it will improve over time. First of all, don't compare it to Flushing. I mean, it's Princeton Junction for crying out loud! I agree that the soup dumplings aren't the best I've ever had, but do you know how excited I am that a place 7 miles from us is serving them at all? Okay, now that that's out of the way, these are the things we order here: shanghai style wonton soup (light tasting with greens), scallion pancakes or sesame beef sandwich (very little grease), and rice cakes with Chinese sausage and mustard greens (our favorite dish). I agree with another reviewer that the eggplant with pork is meh here. Go for the rice cakes -- definitely craveworthy. read more

Shanghai Bun is my favorite Chinese restaurant in the Princeton area because of its authentic Chinese food. Although there are many Chinese food places near Princeton University, many of the others tend to serve inauthentic Americanized Chinese food. Shanghai Bun also serves Americanized Chinese food, but it has a decent selection of tasty authentic dishes. The xiaolongbao (soup dumplings), which I order every time I come here, are decent. The meat is relatively juicy, and the broth is flavorful enough. The skin does fall apart fairly easily though, and sometimes can be too thick. While they don't compare to the amazing xiaolongbao you can find in New York, they are the best in the area and satisfy my xiaolongbao cravings. I also recommend the beef tendon dish and fish fillet with rice wine along with the dan dan mian (dandan noodles) and nian gao (rice cakes). I do not recommend the shengjianbao (pan fried pork buns) though since they aren't very authentic. read more

Sad. I had high hopes for the soup dumplings. The dough was very thick and the soup/ pork lacked flavor. Our entrees made the first disappointment seem like a dream. The chow fun was bean sprouts and onion with a side of dry noodles lacking any kind of sauce. The beef noodle soup was a watered down replication of cheap ramen noodles. Looking for a very good Chinese restaurant this is a must. There's not much to choose from in this area for Chinese cuisine. It is a small place but the seating utilizes every bit of the space. We were there for an early Friday nite dinner and it was very crowded. We were seated immediately and the server was right by the table to take our drink orders. All through our meal, she made sure our glasses were full and that we got everything we ordered. A hard thing to do in a busy place. We got the small wonton soup. It was enough for the three of us. The broth was mild but flavorful. The wontons were soft and plentiful. I like a soft wonton instead of the thick and heavy ones that are often in that soup. We ordered a side of scallion pancake and really liked the crunch of it. I noticed that the tables around were eating different varieties of steamed buns. It looked good, I would return to try them. The dinners were large portions and delicious. I would recommend this place. Also, most of the patrons in Shanghai Bun were Asian. read more

I recently made the discovery of this little chinese place in West Windsor near the train station. It is in a tiny run down strip mall located near the tracks. The wooden banister is rotten and there was a sign that said to not touch it. The outside was a dump. However, the inside was a little better. This place is small, just a few tables and a bunch of booths and smaller booths that seat 2 people. The place wasn't really new looking like you would expect from a new restaurant but it was decent and clean enough. I also didn't appreciate that they serve hot food in plastic bowls with plastic chopsticks. This is a huge no-no for me... Why have chinese joints not made the change? Don't they know that toxic from plastic leaches into what you're eating? I hope they upgrade their bowls/chopsticks soon. What they lack in decor and ambiance they made up for in food. The soup dumplings were very good. They serve 6 per order. The inside was very good with flavorful broth, but the skin was not as tender as other soup buns that I've had but still very good. The beef noodle soup was flavorful with the beef falling apart as I bit into it. The broth needed a bit more flavor though. The chicken with hot peppers was very spicy (which I love) and flavorful. The peppers were fresh and not over cooked. However, there was something gritty in the dish... kind of like sand, did the chefs not wash the vegetables well enough? The dish would've been perfect besides that. But I am willing to try the dish again to see if it was a one time thing. The service was attentive enough albiet, I had to hunt down the owner to get another bowl of rice. Overall, I would definitely be coming back to try out some of the other dishes. I hope they are just as flavorful and good as my first visit! Just please upgrade from your plastic bowls/chopsticks and keep the sand out of the dishes... if they do that I can see myself coming here weekly. read more

We went here on the second day of grand opening. Place is very nice and clean looking! They were only serving appetizers, soups and noodles for now but it was still quite a large selection. They weren't ready to serve the lunch and dinner entrees. We ordered the Braised Beef Noodle Soup. The noodles were udon and not freshly made like the one in Matawan. The braised beef was a little bit tough. We also ordered the Shanghai Rice Cake and loved it! Rice cake was nice and soft and there was just the right amount of chopped baby mustard greens in it. We also ordered scallion pancakes and loved it as well. It was nicely fried and the hot chili oil was a nice accompaniment with it. Finally, we ordered the soup buns. I think they forgot our order but it eventually came out and they apologized for it. The soup buns tasted great. The owner recognized me and said that she owns this place. Her younger brother owns the one in Matawan and her younger sister owns the one in Edison. A nice little family business. They also have this VIP card where you get 10% off if you can pay in cash. Just go and register with the cashier. I love this place! It's nice and clean and it's new! read more

Well, we are more than an hour away from Joe's Shanghai in Manhattan, and Shanghai Bun is more than good enough to save the gas and toll money and not have to deal with the hassle of NYC. FAR better soup dumplings than anything else locally. If everyone else makes a 2-3 and Joe's Shanghai makes a 9 (Din Tai Fong is a 10) then I'd give this a 7! read more

Not fancy but good food. I don't find that there are a lot of good Chinese restaurants in or near Monroe but this is worth the short trip. I love soup dumplings and they do it well. The mini wontons are also thin and excellent. Loved the house special fried rice. I also like the fact that the servers were friendly and accommodating. The food was good but the service was atrocious! My friend and I ordered a number of small dishes (the soup dumlings were excellent, but the scallion pancakes were rather oily and dry). We then ordered a soup and told them we would share. They brought the soup and two small cuos that we could use to share. I asked for another empty bowl. The rather sour waitress simply refused!!! "We only give these small bowls if people want to share". I couldn't figure out what was the problem with just giving custoers an empty bowl! When I paid, I told this to the manager. LOVE IT. I'm a cawc-ASIAN. (I'm white.) So obviously I don't know what food tastes like in China. But when I put those soup dumplings in my mouth, I feel like I'm sitting in a nice Chinese family's living room eating dinner. These soup dumplings are love in a perfect bite.
