They have a new waitress (a mid age lady) who is extremely bad. She tends to ignore the tables with two or one person, see you, smile on you and just passing by and go directly to table with more people. But that's not the worst. She interrupted me, when I was ordering a meal with HER, so that she can sever a nearby large table first ! I was talking to her. With only two words of a dish, she suddenly said "wait" and then moved to the nearby table to sever them! I was like "WTH".... Such a rude waitress, bad bad bad. read more

I placed an order for take out today and when I picked up my food I was told that there is a $15 minimum to use my debit card. I explained that I had never been there before and I wasn't made aware of the minimum when I placed the order. The woman behind the counter tried to pressure me to buy something else. I refused and she finally gave in. When I got back to my office , I opened the bag to find nothing but a very container. There was no soy sauce or napkins! And the food was cold! Hands down the best pork soup dumplings in the area! Arrived on a Sat evening around 6pm with a party of 12. We were sat quickly, served promptly, and left full and happy. The waitress was amazingly attentive and nearly fell over when we requested 12 orders of their soup dumplings (for 10 of us). My sister had requested soup dumplings for her bachelorette party and Shanghai Bun definitely didn't disappoint. We also had a vegetarian and vegan in the group - there were so many other options for them that everyone left with very full bellies. The food here is not NYC quality but, it is very good for our area. My complaint is the manager. Over the past year this woman has been nothing but rude, rude and incredibly rude. I usually get my food to go so that I don't have to deal with her. If I want a pleasant dining experience, I go with a Chinese speaking friend. They need to find someone, ANYONE, who can greet customers with a smile and be pleasant and welcoming. Food quality and service has improved over the past year and overall the food is a delight. This is a solid 4.5 Star Chinese. Food is fast and hot and tasty. We had mostly dim sum which was of good quality. Took 4 Kids there and we ate everything. I feel really bad giving them just 2 stars as they just opened yesterday and today was their second day doing business but it was the worst service I have every experienced in my life! They did not have any of the 4 dishes that we ordered from their menu . 15 mins after taking our orders the waitress comes and tell us that the do not have more that half of the ingredients and stuff yet as they just opened . Since it was their second day we more that happily changed our order . The Shanghai fried noodle and Shanghai chow fun were bad , bland and tasted like paper. The noodles in hot peanut sauce was really good. The food came after a long wait and there was a very long wait for the bill to come plus we were charged for the order that we had placed before which they could not make . The cashier was then missing and the whole place by then was packed with people waiting to try out the brand new restaurant which delayed the bill sorting process even more . The xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) are fantastic. A good contender for Shanghai Park. It's a different style soup dumpling than Joe's Shanghai in NYC, but it actually reminds me of the little stalls that I used to get breakfast at in Shanghai. Unfortunately the shenjianbao (fried pork buns?) and the guotie (fried dumplings) and some other shanghainese specialties are not quite shanghainese. The shenjianbao tasted like a normal bun that was fried. and the guotie skin wasn't thick enough and it wasn't juicy on the inside like it should be. The wonton soup was good. So was the drunken chicken. The scallion pancakes are over-fried and the beef noodle soup had good beef but I think they were dried noodles. All in all, I'm very glad that this place opened up around here. If this place was in Edison, I might have given it 3 stars. But since it's this far south and I'm rooting for them to get better, I'm giving them 4. read more

Shanghai Bun is the newest addition to the Ellsworth shoping center replacing Ganges Indian restaurant. What a welcome addition!!! I've been there three times over the last three weeks and I don't have a thing to complain about. Today I had the soup dumplings and just make sure they've cooled down to truly appreciate the experience of a true party in your mouth! Comfort indeed. The scallion pancakes is a must and I love the chicken dumplings in the spicy sauce which is a mix of hot oil and peanut sauce. For entrees, we love the chicken in garlic, the shrimp szechaun, the double sauteed pork was good but spicier than the others, the shaghai rice cakes were great too. Don't forget to get the VIP card for 10% off (cash only) but worth it.. I had five people over and got 4 mains dishes and 2 apps all under $50 with the card. read more

I eat out a lot at many Chinese restaurants. Shanghai Bun is the worst Chines restaurant I have ever seen! The food is terrible. Service is even worse. Plus, The whole restaurant looks very dirty and badly managed. As a native Chinese, I can immediately taste the weird flavor in their dishes. Obviously they use very cheap and stale materials. Their service is more terrible than their foods. The staff there are very cold and rude. They always look impatient to their customers. It is very strange how they can run a business without any knowledge of customer service. The whole restaurant looks very diry: the table top is very greasy, the floor looks like it has never been cleaned. I will never ever go to this restaurent again! read more

Tip #1 - order the soup dumplings. Consistently good and satisfying. Could actually just make a meal of them. Watch them being made in the window near the back as they prepare the dough and then roll it out thin and stuff them with a pork mixture and then deftly seal them. This last visit I was surprised to see on their specials board something they called chicken casserole?! It was actually what I have known as chicken whiskey soup; however I don't think they added the whiskey but it had all the other ingredients...lily buds, wood ears, meaty chicken legs, ginger and a great tasting broth. It should be on their main menu. This is also a confinement soup (what new mothers eat during their first month after giving birth) and since it was a chilly day, the soup was very comforting. The wait staff is very helpful so be sure to have them explain any dishes that you might not be familiar with. It's an Asian restaurant, so the service isn't that palatable for the white standards of service. But that's the sacrifice for authentic Chinese food. I was pleasantly surprised to find out how good their food was. We got there around 6pm on Friday evening. There were about 4 tables occupied, but 15 minutes later, the place was packed. We ordered xiao long bao, pork bun, mustard leaf soup (with noodles), and obligatory general tso chicken. We liked all of the dishes, especially the pork bun. I like it the meat to be sweeter, but these were savory and good tasting meat buns. The dough was not dense but fluffy, so you don't feel bloated after eating a couple of them - mind you, they are size of a small fist. Xiao long bao seemed to be a bit smaller than those at Shanghai Park in Princeton. But they tasted good nonetheless. My critical 6 year old likes the ones at Shanghai Park better I recommend this place, but get there before the dinner rush! By the way, the food came out super fast. This is our go to place for some good noodles and Shanghai Buns. Food is great, but the waiting staff can be better. Very slow to refill water and take our order. They seem to be overwhelmed, even with minimum patrons. Only time they come quick to your table is to collect the bill. Recommend for the food, but don't expect great service. read more

1 star because of the service I think they really need to work on. The food there, to the best, is at so-so level. We were there a couple of times because there are few Chinese restaurants in the area. My wife and I had dinner there tonight. We ordered one cold dish jelly fish along with other food, it came without any sauce, just plain jelly fish which is not how this should be prepared. When I complained this to our waitress, she simply shrugged off and said now this was really a fresh dish. No apology from her and she just walked away. We expected she would have at least brought back to the kitchen to have chef correct his mistake. Finally my encounter with cashier became my worst dining experience: while I was paying my bill, I complained to her again about half-prepared jelly fish to warn them not repeating the same mistake. No apology again. However my 10% tip - which I think it was an appropriate amount based on the service I received -did trigger her complaint that I was paying too little. I told the lady that she should consider giving me some discount for that lousy half prepared dish they provided. I was puzzled that no one in that place seems to realize that they have made mistake and the customer deserve apology from them. BTW, I did put down 15% tip at last. I have been to this restaurant a few times because I thought the food was better than average Chinese restaurant in this area and the staff were nice. But, this Friday, my feeling about this restaurant moved from 3 stars to 1, because the owner of the restaurant was rude and senseless. Five of us (all adults) went to the restaurant on Friday and they had an empty table at the corner but they wanted us to wait, because the owner did not want his staff to sit any party which has fewer than 8 people. The table actually is the same size as other three tables which sit 5 or 6 people. It just had more chairs around it and it was located at the corner. It was reserved because the restaurant did not take reservations. The staff there said that the owner set this rule for only Fridays and Saturdays. When the owner came out, I nicely suggested that we could use that table while waiting. We were happy to move to the one we were waiting as soon as it was ready. This would increase the efficiency of his restaurant and reduce our wait. He said: "No. I am busy. You are a customer. Customer should not give requirements." I told him that I just suggested something and it was not a requirement. He just walked away in a very rude fashion. I was shocked. The staff felt very bad. I thought about going to another place, but there were 5 of us and it was Friday. So, we waited for 15 minutes to get the table of the same size and ate there. During this time, several parties of five or six came and had to wait in the same way as we did. When we left that table was still empty. I would avoid going there during the weekends. read more
