This has become my family's favorite Chinese go-to place in the Denver Metro area. Straight up Chinese-American comfort food, I wouldn't go here looking for authentic Cantonese or Szechuan style cooking but more what you remember eating as a kid in the US. Some of our favorite dishes are the Chicken Lettuce Wraps, Mongolian Beef, Firecracker Chicken, Hot and Sour or Egg Drop soups, Chicken Fried Rice and Tofu with Veggies. Catering to American palates they use a bit (or a lot) of sugar in many dishes and we really appreciate that they prepare certain dishes for us without sugar when requested. Everything is tasty and made with high quality ingredients (no mystery meats!!) and service is efficient and fast. As an Asian I find it pretty funny that people expect smiles and fantastic service dining out at Asian restaurants. Overall, it just really doesn't happen. However, I do expect good food, a clean establishment and reasonable turnaround time on service. Located in a strip mall parking is plentiful. For people who dine with kids they offer crayons for little ones to draw on the paper they use to line each table. read more

3 stars for service. I stood there asking to do a take out at the bar and waited and waited... The staff just looked at me and didn't even say I'll be right with you or someone will be... Just stared as I said I like to place a to go order... Ugh! Then finally got someone to help me and ordered. I was told 15 minutes for my 3 orders of egg rolls to go and waited over 30-40 minutes. I was late to my party. Another woman placed in a take out over the phone 45 minutes before me and waited with me for 30 minutes for her order... So maybe they were swamped in the kitchen but both of us were definitely not pleased The family I brought the egg rolls to loved them and they tasted great so 4 stars for food flavor but service wise... After nearly 3 years Shanghai Garden responds to my review. So for taking 2+ years, ruining our Denver, and losing a near weekly customer what did they respond with? We are sorry- want a 20% coupon? Seriously people - you bad talked us to our backs and your apology is a discount I can score on a coupon book? I mentioned as such, and they basically said have a nice life. I'm always open to people making things right... But don't waste our time. You ruin someone's evening respond quickly and fairly before you lose a good customer And to quote their "social person" for updating my review with their late and ridiculous reach-out... Another suburban stripmall eatery whose exterior doesn't do it justice! Shanghai Garden is definitely nicer than your average Chinese restaurant - you are greeted and seated by a proper hostess, tables have linen tablecloths and napkins, servers wear a smart-looking uniform, and there is lots of dark wood and carved panelling etc. The menu doesn't offer many - if any - surprises though. We started off with egg rolls ($2.99 for two) which were, without a doubt, the best I have ever eaten. With a little dab of sweet and sour sauce and Chinese mustard, I could have eaten those suckers all night. For entrees, I chose Sesame Chicken, and he decided on his usual General Tso's Chicken. Admittedly, these aren't exactly complicated dishes to make, but they were really excellent - light and crispy batter, and all-white meat. My only complaint was that while the menu indicated these were spicy dishes, in fact they were not at all. Servings were extremely generous. Recommended! read more

New to area so relying on my fellow yelpers to point me in the right direction. This place was a HOME RUN. I have never had such delicious orange shrimp before. They were huge like they were from the gulf. The sauce was amazing. The flavor was sweet yet a tad bit spicy. Came with fried rice. All for less than $15 for dinner. I've been meaning to update my review for a while now. Every time I've been in since my first visit, they've been on time with my food, even throughout the pandemic. Gone down hill over the last year or so...overall flavor is lacking and there's a complete lack of consistency. We've had occasional good meals (for some reason lunch seemed better then dinner) but overall lackluster. Not sure if this was Covid-related, but just not worth our time anymore. I've moved on to Hong Kong Cafe as our go-to substitute. Ordered food at 5:30pm to be picked up. Was told it would be ready at 6:15 PM. Got to the restaurant and had to park in the fire lane as there was no parking in the parking lot. When I went to pick up the food, we were told they had a computer system issue and were running a little behind, but no one told us how far behind. After waiting 15 minutes I was finally told it would be at least another 10 minutes. I understand system issues, but they should have notified me at time of order and shouldn't have taken to-go orders. I was not able to stay any longer and after wasting 45 minutes of my time, I still don't have dinner. Not a good pick up experience. read more

Very good chinese food! Love that this is nearby. We opted for chinese when evaluating our dinner options. My sister in law and father in law were visiting between the 4 of us, we had a nice variety. I threw caution to the wind and ordered kung pao shrimp and it was delicious. My husband could not keep his hands off of it. The shrimp were amazing! Nice kick. Hubs ordered his tried and true moo shoo chicken and it was great as always. FIL had the mongolian beef which was not as spicy as I would have hoped but nothing that some sriracha doesn't cure! The beef was very tender and flavorful. My SIL had some sort of noodle dish that I wasn't wild about. She doesn't like spicy things so that could be why I wasn't a huge fan. The hot and sour soup is spicy and delicious! Definitely one of the better ones I have had- and spicier than most, which makes me smile! We also ordered crab wontons but I didn't care for them. Not enough crab. But everyone else seemed to enjoy them. I also don't like that weird orange sauce that accompanies them for dipping. But this could just be my preference. I've been going to this restaurant since I was 7 years old with my family growing up. Back then it was inside the Southglenn Mall. They've always been my favorite Chinese food stop in all of Colorado, and I've tried countless. They have high quality ingredients and always have fresh veggies and meat. My favorites continue to be the Mushu Chicken (or pork), Mongolian Beef, and Sesame Chicken. You HAVE to try the wanton soup! The noodles are very very fresh and thick (I think they make them from scratch). They give you little crispy wantons to put into it that make it even better! read more

When I saw this place when going with my grandparents, it didn't really look like much. It was just a small little place with not much decor on the outside. It was just plain walls, metallic-looking lions, and a glass door. I entered the restaurant. It was decorated like a palace. Pristine wallpapers and paper lamps. I sat at our round table. I ordered dumplings and wontons, and it was heavenly. Hot cream cheese gently wrapped in beige-tan bread. Dumplings with skin wrapped and pushed together so delicately. Fresh quality ingredients, delicious drinks, lovely atmosphere, and outstanding service are the things that really stand out here. Not the best egg rolls, dumplings, or crab cheese wontons I have ever had, but still a very nice experience and I loved the tender slices of beef in my husband's beef and scallops entree. Average to below average food for the price. The service was absolutely pathetic. Food took extremely long to arrive and arrived lukewarm, food also arrived at random times. No refills offered, extremely slow service for a slow to average busy evening. Did this have to do with staffing? Possibly......maybe the manager could have stepped in and helped then. Have been going to Shanghai Garden for many years. Tonight was the worst experience ever. Waitress was out of it. Took forever to get soup. Then we waited nearly 30 minutes for our main course. She brought the rice first and it sat for 10 minutes then brought the meat. Asked her if we could please have some warm rice. She had an attitude with that. Will never go back which is unfortunate because it used to be the best chinese restaurant in this area. Not anymore. read more

I ordered the Firecracker Chicken and it was very oily with parts of uncut tissue from the chicken which made it unappetizing. My husband ordered the Sesame Chicken. My daughter and I cut a piece of chicken to split only to find a vein inside. The staff was attentive, but unfriendly. I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

I ordered the orange beef. It was badly overcooked and horribly bitter. After eating 1 piece, I sent it back, explaining to the waitress exactly what the problem was. Then the check arrived, with the $17 dog food still on it. So I had to go up front and get the manager to remove it. She complained that I should have told her and the chef what was wrong. Apparently that wasn't the waitress's job. When we left, another group of patrons were having a similar discussion with the manager. Like me, they did not eat there that night. I almost gave them better than one star, because the kids liked the sweet & sour chicken. But I had a bite of it, and I can see why they liked it - it was simply drowned in sugar. This really is terrible food. Our tab came to $25 before tip. Pretty high for one crappy entree and 4 soft drinks. read more

Shanghai Garden made me feel like I was starring in my own film, seriously. Starring me, in "My Big-Fat-Tummy-Wedding!!" THIS PLACE IS GOOOD!!! S.G. is only serving Take-out at the moment, no dine in.. or delivery? According to their yelp page info. Ordered the Cashew Shrimp, which appeared plain to me, but the inside filling of the shrimp was ambrosial with the steaming heat, as I opened up my to go box. The shrimp was so tangy and chewy, that I couldn't get enough of the fire my taste buds went through. It came with actual cashews and also an assortment of vegetables!! Again, just so hot and steamy!! We got an order of the Chicken Lettuce Wraps, which were easy to eat and mainly bite size. The bits of chicken were carefully guarded by the lettuce boats; it was such an interesting order!! My favorite fried side were the chicken wings, because of how brown and crisp the outer core of the drumsticks and wing were. Crumbs everywhere, but sooo worth it. I wouldn't walk out without also ordering the traditional crab cheese wontons. These are super filling, creamy and came broiling hot! They came with a total of 5 in our order, and overall fast delivery. We have been very impressed with Shanghai Garden's handling of our order during these difficult times. read more

My family's been going here since it was a part of the old Southglenn Mall in the early 90s. Location moved across the street, but nothing in terms of the food has changed, and that is a good thing. Sometimes good ol' Chinese American food is the greatest comfort food of all, and with Thai food usurping Chinese in terms of dominance, I'm glad Shanghai Garden has stuck to their guns and not expanded their menu to include Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese sushi to their menu as so many Chinese restaurants feel compelled to do in order to compete. Our standard order for decades has been chicken fried rice, mongolian beef and firecracker chicken, and they're all still awesome. Good cuts of beef, not the chewy gristle-laden stuff you're likely to find in other strip mall Chinese restaurants. (*cough* Imperial *cough* what happened to you?). All served piping hot and good sized portions, we always have enough for lunch the next day. When you go to an Asian restaurant you should always check your expectations on service because the Asian mentality (spoken as an Asian myself) is that you're there for the food, not to party or be coddled. That said, the staff at SG have always been kind and have become familiar with us over the decades and treat us like family, they love my 4-year old kid and always make him laugh and teach him Cantonese, and that's the ultimate goal anyone could want from their local family restaurant. I've always loved the idea of being a regular at an establishment where you don't really even have to place an order and the kitchen knows exactly how you like your food. That's the Shanghai Garden, and it's worth putting in the time and dedication to make it your regular comfort food as well. read more

I can't believe I never updated this to five stars. Sorry for the oversight, Shanghai Garden! The food here is consistently great, and seems how we're there (usually for takeout) at least once a week, I think they deserve five stars. My husband and I really never have had a bad meal here-- egg foo young, emperor's chicken, Mongolian beef, Szechuan beef, kung pao anything, Hunan anything, Mandarin noodles-- all delicious. I had orange peel shrimp for dinner last night; it's probably my favorite Americanized Chinese entree, and they were the best orange peel shrimp I've ever had. The egg rolls have markedly improved; for some reason the dinner ones are different from lunch, but the dinner variety are some of the best we've ever had. Crab wontons are delicious as well. Service is great, both for takeout and dining in, and the restaurant is actually quite nice inside. And you really can't beat the value-- we get out of Shanghai Garden for under 2/3 of the price of P.F. Chang's, and for an arguably better meal. Funny that two of our favorite restaurants (this place and Land of Sushi) are across the parking lot from each other in a Centennial strip mall. Highly recommended! read more

I have always loved Shanghai Garden. I've been a loyal customer for years. While I usually do take out Tonight I had time so met my family there for a meal out. Well it a horrible evening. Our waiter made us repeat our order several times. Then he and other wait staff stood not more than a few feet away from our table watching and listening to us. I never been made feel I had to whisper when talking. Every time I took a drink of water they ran over to refill it...I'm all for attentive service but I was afraid to drink a drop of water....got to the point I had to tell them to leave me alone. Then as we were eating our meal they would walk over and survey our eating progress... At another point I almost seriously asked are we not eating right... Don't think she understood what I said cos she smiled. Then halfway thru she asked if we wanted boxes.... Like they couldn't wait to get rid of us. Then our bill came and we were charged for our soup, which has always been included in entrees. Seems like that policy was changed recently. Would have been nice if we were told that....instead of saying what soup do you want...Waiter basically had attitude that it wasn't his fault. So after all that....it is their fault they just lost a loyal customer. read more

One doesn't typically habitually and voluntarily do something for nearly half their life unless they truly enjoy (lord, I hope) 3.) Family owned, these people know me, they now know my kiddos, and they know my lady. In this day and age. Seriously. 4.) Best Chinese Food in the greater metro area. Period. The following are superb: Hunan Beef. Holy... yes you will find a new vice Cashew Chicken. I am assured it is the best in Denver by someone who totally knows cashew chicken. I, however, am not a nutty fowl kind of individual. As previously mentioned: the hot and sour soup. Shanghai Garden know spicy, especially on request. Bring the sweatband. So. Good. My honey, who is staunchly vegetarian, would like to give her shout out to the Vegetable Lo Mein. It may seem unadventurous but Shanghai also have some seriously fresh veggies. Get it moderately spicy. It may convert you. See? Another long review. Which is okay. These guys have fifteen plus years of history with me. All of it positive. Great food in one of the most tranquil restaurants I've been in. Each portion is generous, yet my favorite is the grilled Mongolian lamb. It comes out on a sizzling platter (think of it as "Chinese fajitas"). Considering the quality of food when compared to other local Chinese places, the price is excellent. Attentive staff, timely service and ample parking. My only nitpick is that the decor of the interior is somewhat dated and appears rather worn. However, wear is a sign of a well-used restaurant and that's a good thing. read more

Ventured here to meet a friend for dinner, sort of half way between where we both were. Service was some of the best I've had at a Chinese restaurant, she was very sweet and patient and was there every time we needed her. Kudo's for that! The Chinese food was average. We had an order of egg rolls, wonton soup, egg drop soup, fire cracker chicken, and mongolian beef (a favorite of ours). All was very solid Chinese food, the fire cracker chicken had a wonderful depth of spiciness. Not a place I would drive out of the way for. I will say...the reviews were spot on...the egg rolls (dinner) we soooooo good...had to get 3 orders for the table though so everyone could get one. We even tried the Crab cheese wontons..YUMS! We had the sesams chicken, sweet and sour chicken, sweet and sour pork, lemon ckicken and kung pao chicken. We are very particular about Chinese food but they did NOT disappoint.
