dynasty fish with pine nuts

One of the few places that never disappointed was Shanghai Kitchen in Greenwood Village. Time truly flied, cannot believe it has been here for almost 30 years. Liked its old Shanghai scene decor, the authenticity of its dishes and story of Chef Zhou's culinary journey. Here were some of the dishes ordered during a recent trip there, including dynasty fish with pine nuts, pork meatballs, salt and pepper shrimps, smoked fish, vegetable triple delight and Shanghai braised bean curd, as well as Chef Zhou's new braised pork belly with pickled vegetable buns. For people who like noodle soup, the pork meatball and pickled vegetable noodle soup was also quite tasty.

It's nice to have a go-to restaurant in your direct vicinity and I must say that this Chinese restaurant is one of them (although I don't utilize it enough.) A few days ago, a little past 9pm (on Christmas Eve to be exact), on my way to go to a friend's house, I stopped here to get me a few items. There was one group of people (the last diner of the night) that was finishing off their late night meal. Other than that, I appeared to be the last customer for the night. The lady that greeted me asked me if it was for a dine in or to-go (wonder if she would have accepted me had I said dine in? Not sure.) I immediately responded, "To-go, please." Like I stated earlier I only wanted a few items (a few sides.) I got me the pork dumplings and the veggies egg rolls. The lady said it'd be 5 min. While waiting, I looked around the dining room and took a few photos. Nicely dimmed lights, each dining table was neatly arranged/set. Very clean and inviting. I like the bright red napkins. This restaurant appears to have received several accolades in the past (there are frames magazine articles on one of the walls.) As promised, it was about 5 minutes before my food was ready. A different lady gave me a bag that contained my food with a nice smile. Service is good here. I didn't eat the food until next day. Sometimes there is a huge difference between eating it fresh or a day old so I'll be fair with this review based on the fact that I ate it when the food was half day old. Overall, both of them were good. To be frank, when it comes to dumplings or potstickers, I prefer them to be pan-fried to be deep fried. I wonder if they ever make them pan-fried or even steamed. This will be a little request I'll be sure to make upon my next visit for sure. The veggie egg rolls were a bit small for the price. Tasted good however. I really need to try their main dishes in the future. Then I'll be able to elaborate more on their food in a real sense. Until then my hon/frank rating shall be 3-stat.

Family in town so we stopped by for dinner on a weeknight and it was packed. Everything we tried was good- garlic shrimp, eggplant w pork, sweet pork ribs, and salt and pepper fried fish. Next time will try the more authentic Shanghainese dishes. Service was quick and served family style.

Szechuan Triple Delight

Shanghai Kitchen serves up some extremely delicious food, especially if you like Szechuan style food. The Szechuan style green beans are a must try. Their flavor will be what brings you back to Shanghai Kitchen over and over. I have tried many of the dishes in the menu and can highly recommend the Szechuan Style Triple Delight and the Orange Chicken. The service is always attentive and the restaurant itself is comfortable offering booth and table seating. I would suggest dining in as the times we have ordered food for take out have been underwhelming.

I honestly didn't know what to expect when it comes to Shanghai food in Denver area - not many restaurants have been able to do SH food justice imho. I'm impressed by this place! They have some ver decent and authentic /staple / traditional shanghainese dishes here! Just need some prerequisite SH food knowledge to know what to order!

While waiting for our to-go order, we munched on Xiao Long Bao (XLB), because, it would be sacrilege to not eat XLB hot and fresh out of the steamer! My mom, a true Shanghainese, said Shanghai Kitchen's XLB is pretty authentic. She especially liked that the meat filling wasn't too fatty. That's not to say the bun didn't contain enough soup, though. I thought it tasted great. My tongue is still burning a couple of days later from eating it while it's piping hot, but it's worth it! Our to-go foods stayed warm thanks to the meticulous packaging (they would tape down lids to make sure nothing leaks!) The Lion's Heads meatballs are impressing, bigger than my fists! So don't be stingy, share with someone so you both have room to try more stuff! We adored that night's special dish: ginger and scallion crabs stir fried with rice cakes, so so yummy and filling. The portion was huge and you would think there would be more rice cakes than crabs (as the former is cheaper) but Shanghai Kitchen is way more generous with their crabs! The sweet and sour fish steaks were more Americanized than Chinese, it's not bad, but next time I'm ready to dine in, I'll order the whole fish in sweet and sour sauce. I'm sure it'll be way better!

And by 10:20, it was full and they were on a waitlist. What I love about dim sum is the carts and how quickly you can get food. I've decided that dim sum is the perfect place to bring toddlers. You get your food within minutes of sitting down. And there is no waiting for food that your toddler gets bored. We got so much food ranging from shumai, chicken feet, Chinese broccoli, shrimp balls and so many items. We were in and out of there in about 30-45 minutes. I love how quick it is too. We will definitely be back. A decent dim sum spot. The remodel looks so nice.

It's bright, big, decor is beautiful and most importantly - clean! All the dim sum staples are on carts; shu mai, hai gow, chicken feet, tripe, soup dumplings, turnip cakes, baked bbq bun, chinese broccoli, pineapple bun, shrimp crepes. There is room for the carts to move around and they come around often. Everything we order from the menu comes out quickly (salt and pepper squid, chow fun). Weekend dim sum gets busy at lunch time so I'd get there early or expect a wait. If you want to try something new and cool, order the smoked fire shrimp. Crispy and spicy shrimp with heads on wrapped in foil and lit on fire at the table. Also, if you have an appetite, order the whole sichuan fish. Lots of peppers and spices and the whole fish brought to your table in a huge serving tray. We've only dined for dim sum, but are excited to come for dinner!

Shrimp Shumai: this was the first item I took out of the bag and disappointment was the first feeling I felt. I should've trusted my gut when I saw the name of the dish but the photo didn't match. I based it off the photo and what was delivered was not what was in the photo. Instead, I got these small, nickel sized diameter "dumplings" that are straight up mushy. Xiao long bao: maybe it was delivery issue, but all dumplings were broken, and the soup leaked. Aside from this, the wrapping is thick especially at the top where the twist is. The filling is also mushy but better than the shrimp Shumai. I still wouldn't get this again. Chili wontons: again, maybe a delivery issue but there wasn't a lot of chili oil since it leaked out of the bag. Aside from that, the wrapper was thick. Filling was meh. Mapo tofu: just okay but again, very hard to mess up mapo tofu in general imo. Lacks meat. Probably the best thing out of what I ordered unfortunately

My to go and order food combination has been the soft tofu, the Chinese "donut", and the pepper bun. However, I decided to order the purple rice roll and boy, it didn't disappoint me at all. In fact, I would say this food item was very close to the pepper bun: both were very tasty and delicious. Two friends and her daughter joined me, and the praises they gave as they ate their breakfast was the testimony to this place. The restaurant was packed: all tables were filled. Service was great: workers were fast to delivered our ordered food, and everyone within their group appeared to enjoyed their conversations. If you are curious to know what a Chinese traditional breakfast is about and what sort of food items you can eat, stop by Joy Lounge and see it for yourself. There's nothing like this in the area, and it's amazing to have a place that doesn't need reservations, hasn't been influencered out, and consistently serves up these favorites. Just be aware that the rice roll does have pork floss, so it's not vegetarian. If you've never had breakfast like this before, you need to top your tofu. Do not eat it plain. You will be disappointed if you do. Since the menu is small, between two people, you can literally try everything and you should. This is a hidden gem that people still have never heard of, and for the right crowd, nothing would be more comforting on a weekend morning.
