I generally gravitate to Chinatown-type restaurants, but with InKind credits to redeem, we ended up at Tri Dim Shanghai. And I'm glad. We'll certainly return! Shredded crispy duck is lean, crisp (living up to its name) and in my estimation, perfect! A half order is $33 and comes with crepes and what I guess is thin-cut celery and hoisin sauce. Our other two dishes merit maybe four stars. I had high hopes for prawns with black bean sauce and minced pork, but there was little pork and the dish was under-seasoned. Beaten egg white, a component of the sauce, was almost raw and when separated from the black beans, runny and unappealing. When I inquired about 'vegetarian delight,' our server suggested creating our own dish. Four sautéed vegetables for $16. I went with bok choy, broccoli, mushrooms and fried tofu. I asked for a flavorful sauce. I believe we got garlic, but it was too subtle, not garlicky enough.. Service is on-the-ball. Ambience is lovely. My first time here and I'm glad I came. It was lunch on a Sunday so it wasn't busy when we arrived but it was definitely busy by the time we were done. Plenty of seating and the bigger tables for larger groups are in the back. There's a nice bar as well. Authentic Chinese dishes as well as dim sum. All the dishes were delicious that we tried. They also had an option of choosing your own protein or veggies and your choice of sauces as well. That worked out well for the younger one with us. Man I think I made a mistake last night. To be fair the Chinese food on upper east side isn't really good excluding the now closed Phillipe Chow. I ordered general taos and fried rice it was fresh for sure but no flavor chicken tasted watery. The rice had tomato's lol what happened to peppers? Idk man waste of 50 cash. We have been coming to this restaurant for several years now and unfortunately it has changed a lot and not for better . Food is still good but service is very rude and less than acceptable. On several occasions in the last few months we had a really bad experience with service. Rude waiters , not willing to accommodate your standard requests ( like bringing appetizers all together for each guest. We were party of 3 and other 2 people had to wait 15 min or so to get their appetizers so one person for being polite and waiting for other people food to show up ended up eating cold food) few items on the wine menu was not available and waiter pushed other higher priced items . No one poured our wine , we had to do it ourselves, also water glasses not being refilled . When check came and we did not wanted to leave gratuity for the lack of decent service, our water demented a tip and was really forceful and very rude about it ) it's a shame ! It was a really good restaurant and I am not sure what happened to it . Food however is still good and if it was served on time not cold , that would have been even better. Lovely ambiance. Tri dim is my go to Chinese restaurant on the UES. The service is excellent and the food always great as well. We have tried many dishes and all of them have been excellent so it's hard to pick a favorite! We've had the pork soup dumplings, hot and sour soup, egg roll, thick noodles, chicken with broccoli, sesame chicken, eggplant in garlic sauce and shredded beef with chili pepper. The soup dumplings are a bit on the large size but delicious. All the dim sum is wonderful. Peking duck is a must try. Last time there my wife and I had the crispy fish filets with black bean sauce and the snow pea leaves. It was all excellent. The wait staff is highly professional and the ambiance pleasant. I have frequented this establishment several times over the last 2 years. Each time the experience worsens. The staff is very arrogant and not friendly at all. The food is mostly frozen the the Duck is quite FOUL-TASTING / GAMEY. Nothing tastes fresh and the cooking oil is rancid. It is a shame as the room is somewhat nice. This establishment is doing 80% takeout theses days; the restaurant goers are more of a nuisance. We were the first to sit down for lunch at noon, and the restaurant offered a decent-sized menu with plenty of options as I was in the mood for dim sum but my boyfriend wanted Chinese dishes. For appetizers, we ordered dim sum, starting with the steamed BBQ pork buns - they were huge and a favorite. The chicken dumplings in chili sauce were another hit, and the turnip cakes rounded out our dim sum selections nicely. For our main course, we had pork fried rice, shredded beef, and a custom-made dish of chicken with bok choy, beans, mushrooms, and cabbage. There was a slight mix-up with the shredded beef - we were initially given pork, which was actually tastier than the beef. Despite this, all the food was delicious. The only downside was the timing of the dishes. The chicken dish came out first, followed by the dim sum, and then, after a while, the shredded beef and fried rice. However, the service was attentive, and our glasses were always filled with water. The restaurant was clean, and the overall experience was positive. Fried pork dumplings, pork soup dumplings and steamed shrimp dumplings - all good - the soup dumplings had a slightly sweet broth inside. Major faux pas, the waiter who kindly served the first soup dumpling broke one. I had green beans and crispy beef, as well - the crispy beef was a bit sweet and sauce forward; the green beans were good but could have used a bit of a chili crisp kick. This has long been a favorite Manhattan Chinese Restaurant of ours for lunch. The food is creative, the prices reasonable and the ambiance pleasant. Yesterday, I had a lunch meal that we had tried as a takeout during dinner hours a week before. The price was the same both times, but the lunch meal was smaller and there was a lot less of the delicious sauce which made the dish distinctive. When we pointed out the differences to the waiter, instead of agreeing to mention our comments to the manager, he denied there was any difference in the dish at any time of day, or as a takeout. Disappointing, both concerning the restaurant's apparent unfair policy and the waiter's defensive and clumsy efforts to justify it. read more
