We came here on a Sunday for lunch and I was surprised to see how empty the restaurant was. After I started eating I understood why. Although some dishes were nicely prepared, others lacked seasoning. I don't think I will return in the near future, but maybe I will give this place a try again after I get over the inconsistency of seasoning. Here's what we ordered: - pan fried pork buns: I actually quite enjoyed this dish because the buns were JUICY! Honestly, not a huge fan. It's great for generic family dinners, iykyk. There's a ton of dishes on the menu, and they're mostly average. Since it wasn't busy the night we went in, the service was outstanding but usually it's as expected for Chinese restaurants (quick and efficient but not observant or friendly). Nothing particularly good or bad. That said, it's one of the better options available for this style of restaurant. Lots of seating inside, well lit, generic interior design. Bathrooms were clean. We were craving Shanghai food so we visited this restaurant. It was a weekend and we didn't make reservations but we were luckily able to grab a table at around 6pm. It was busy but not overly so where people had to wait outside. It did seem a little short staffed so it did take longer for us to get their attention to order, get water/tea refills, or to get the bill. The restaurant is a typical Chinese restaurant with bright and cold fluorescent lights, but the tables were well spaced apart so it didn't feel crowded like it sometimes can. We ordered quite a few dishes and it all came SO quickly. A few of us felt a bit stressed out because the table couldn't fit everything and we had to try to rush and inhale our food quickly to make space. That's more of an us problem though - oops. The food hit the spot and fulfilled our cravings. We particularly enjoyed the crispy rice cakes, Shanghai thick oil noodles, xiao long baos (pork soup dumplings) and the Shan jian baos (pan fried pork buns). The wrapping for the xlbs could've been thinner but it still tasted great and we loved how juicy it was! Some dishes that were okay were the Tantan noodles because the noodles were soggy and soft, the Peking duck wrap because the duck was cut so thick, and the Sweet & Sour fish wasn't fresh. Came here with a foodie friend and was glad he ordered different dishes. Several dishes were new to me which opened my outlook on this restaurant which I previously overlooked. One dish in particular was the Deep Fried Fish in Seaweed Coat. Apparently there is a choice of fish or shrimp. The batter is greenish. It didn't look appetizing but tasted amazing. Came here by recommendation as we were overwhelmed with the number of restaurant options after arriving from the airport. First impression, it was packed for a Friday night. Typical bright fluorescent light Chinese restaurant. We were lucky to have a table pulled for the two of us even though it was an hr to their closing time. There were about three staff servicing the whole restaurant. Attractive but very rushed. The menu is extensive, more of a mush mash of Chinese cuisine than a straight up Shanghainese place. We got the sweet and sour whole fish which was delicious. The vegetable (Taiwanese lettuce a-choi) dish with dried fish and black beans. Taste was good but a bit heavy on the oil. Minced duck wrapped in lettuce dish was not the best or the worst either. Enjoyable. The white rice was cooked to perfection where you can see each grain. Portions were generous for its price overall. We ordered a bit much for the two of us and had left overs for three days. They prefer to take cash as there's an extra charge for credit cards. Shanghainese restaurant that used to be used to be near Lansdowne but is now located at the Abercorn Inn, across from Costco. Small to mid-sized restaurant, with a pretty traditional Chinese restaurant decor. Not all that busy when we went on a weeknight. Ordered a bunch of dishes. The wine chicken was $19, but it's around half a chicken. Tasted good, but not a lot of the wine flavor. The fish soup was tasty. Their xiaolongbao are a little bigger or more filling compared to other Shanghainese restaurants in the area. Also got the sliced pork hock, the stir fried rice cake and some pork, and they were decent. For some sweets, we tried a cake that's covered in meat floss. It was an interesting combination of flavors, and not unpleasant. Overall, a decent meal, but there are better Shanghainese restaurants in Richmond. read more

Everything else is just okay. As a Shanghainese, I will say, okay the Xiaotong is alright. I don't like the rest of the food. And the menu does not even like a Shanghai restaurant. What is outrageous is this eel dish. It is listed under the live seafood menu. I can easily tell this is not live eel as a eel lover. And they charge 100 dollars for this item. They argued when the eel arrived it is live....... And they killed it at that time?? Does that even make sense? It is still a frozen eel okay? And this price for frozen eel is unacceptable. And the flavor is also not impressive. They waived the tip but still I will not recommend this restaurant. read more

Shanghai Wonderful is located on Bridgeport Road in Best Western Abercorn. I have been to previous located but this new one. We came there for lunch before Costco run. The lunch special price so reasonable and extensive lunch menu too. We ordered few things to share: Pork and vegetables dumplings in soup - it 's hot and fresh made dumplings so delicious, the broth slightly salty. Stir fried chicken with peanut - it's so plain and bland but greasy. Radish puffs - It's great and the puff so crispy. One of my favorite places XLB hands down! They moved to this location in the hotel a few years ago, and consistently serve up a mad Shainghainese breakfast. Highly recommend trying their XLBs (the thicker skin type), dumplings in seaweed soup, beef rolls & any of their noodle dishes! All their classic dimsum dishes are super fresh, made to order, juicy on the inside. Service is also very quick here, I can always count on coming here hungry & be fed ASAP - they never disappoint. The only down side is that I'm not particularly into their stir fry dishes & dinner menu, it's typically very oily and on the heavier side, I do feel a tad groggy ordering those. Not that great. The old Shanghai Wonderful located near Lansdown was very yummy. They relocated here. So remember to show up only after 5pm. First off service was so so. If you come here 5 mins before 5pm, they will not sit you down. You will have to wait. This is kind of annoying. But oh well. Don't expect too much from Chinese restaurants. So prices here are quite pricy and portion is quite small. We ordered the Xiao long bao, pan fried dumpling and braised pork. The braised pork was delicious. The Xiao long bao was not that good. The skin was awfully thick. It did have a lot of pork but only issue is the taste. Not tasty at all. Well at least it had enough soup. The pan fried dumpling was not great either. Again skin too thick and was also chewy. If you let it cool down its worse. The skin harden. At least lots of meat. But again not tasty like the Xiao long bao. This is a Shanghai restaurant. If they can't make good Xiao long bao and pan fried dumpling then they basically have failed. Those two items are Shanghai signature items. Never coming back. read more

The chicken fried rice was really good! We ordered Shanghai noodles which were also good but I wish the soy sauce were less sweet. Soup dumplings are bigger than others. Each dish is a big portion. There was plenty of food for the six of us and I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality and taste of everything. Order about $200 worth of food for 5 adults. Despite all the negativity about food quality, I am surprised that the food quality was pretty decent. The price is definitely on the high side. We ordered a beef fried dish, and were charged $39.95. We do not recall seeing that dish with that price on the menu. I tried to find the menu online but couldn't find that specific dish. Feels like it is a bit too much for that even though it was not bad. The reason why I gave 1 star is because we came on a cold night. It was -9 degrees outside. After we sat for a while, we noticed it was really cold. I believed they did not turn on any heat. Not only we saw people from other tables were all eating with their jackets on, even the waitresses were wearing down jackets while serving us. Due to the cold indoor temperature, all our dishes get cold really fast. So we have to finish our meal before it gets cold. I think it is quite unacceptable to have such low temperatures in a dining setting. So overall I would say 3-4 stars for food, 0 stars for setting. Will not come again, there are better Shang Hai restaurant near by that doesn't freeze you while you eat. read more

Amazing gem of a restaurant in what appears to be a tudor beamed hotel. Unlike most restaurants attached to hotels, much less a Best Western located across from a Costco, this particular one deserves extra mention as it produces some of the most extraordinary Shanghai cuisine your correspondent has ever tasted. Starting with the dim sum, the xiefen xiaolongbao (蟹粉小籠包）are thin skinned, chewy, and filled with deliciously soupy crab and pork goodness. Table stakes, you say. Then arrive 蘿蔔酥, absolutely extraordinary -- round, greaseless, impossibly light and buttery puff pastry encloses savory, steamy shredded daikon in a flavor explosion that shouldn't be physically possible. You tell yourself that over and over, as you puff through the piping hot contents and savor the contrasts of texture, moisture, and tastes whirling around your palate -- you're melting, what a world, what a world. read more

I love this place! They moved from their Aberdeen location over to across from Costco. I was really sad when I saw they were closed, but I found them again! I like how they renewed their menu and although their restaurant is inside a hotel they managed to make it look presentable. Like I'd consider having a wedding there (not really). Although this is a Shanghainese restaurant, I had to get Peking duck since I haven't had it in a while. It was really good! Very comparable to Chinese restaurants like Kirin or Empire. Also the prices are really reasonable. Also had their XLB and Sheng Jian Bao (the pan fried ones) - amazing! There was juices oozing out of every bun and they were delectable! Also for appetizers don't miss out on their fried tofu (especially the one with the meat sauce) and their drunken chicken, so good! If you feel like you need some fiber after all of that, their string beans with meat sauce is amazing and it's not as oily as most places which is great. Also their pea-tips with garlic is to die for (although a bit expensive for what it is). The service is really nice here too, they don't rush you and are really helpful. They really know how to train their staffs since they are all really attentive and don't forget things. The food is also really fast so if you are hungry this is the place for you (also since their portions are pretty big). All in all, this is a solid place and my usual go-to for Shanghainese food. Came here for the first time for dinner. We went for a banquet type dinner - 10 course meal. I thought the food was very good. Some of the dishes were a bit different than normal banquet food but tasty. I especially enjoyed the deep fried fish dish. It was spicy but so flavourful. The service was alright but they rushed us out of there in 1.5 hours . Fastest banquet dinner ever. They had a tour bus coming to dine so they needed our tables back. Tough yelpers, though I can see why. By itself, it's a 4-star; especially for its fresh modern decor, spaciousness, cleanliness of the washrooms, service and value. But compared to other top Shanghainese restaurants, especially in Richmond, SW comes at second place after Shanghai River, No.1 Shanghai and a few others, in no particular order. Family ordered the $88 dinner package which consisted of too many dishes, lost count at 7 or 8, including a dessert soup, the dark sesame doughy balls with a sweet rice soup, which just ok to me. The highlights were the Peking duck & its cousin lettuce dish, the fish, chicken with wine sauce and thick round noodles. XLB were a tad too big, skin a tad too thick, and the texture of meat reminded me of the dim sum sew gow lol. Still, worth a repeat visit. I mean, I'd refer ppl to come here. We used to go to their old Richmond location, and so we've been wanting to try out the new one across from Costco, inside the Best Western Hotel. (Yes, a rather odd combo but we should be innovative, right?) Upon entry, the place is a general square and with spacious tables spread out. This gives a grand presence, compared to their old location across from Lansdowne Mall. An interesting observation is their "fresh" seafood menu on the wall (written only Chinese). Right next to it is the "fresh" seafood tank, with only a few lobster that weren't moving. No other seafood item listed was in that same tank. We ordered a variety of dishes to try them out to see if anything has changed....and changed they did. The basic XLB tasted simple, with little taste and the skin is a bit on the thick side. The hot and sour soup was...not hot and not sour. The Peking Duck was good in that the skin had lots of meat attached to it. Most would agree, however, that a proper one should have little meat, as the meat is supposed to go into the second dish. We had the lettuce wrap as the second dish, and I'm not sure how much real duck meat went into that, which had a mixture of deep fried rice noodle and diced veggies. The braised pork - a standard Shanghainese dish - was not bad. The meat was a bit on the tough side. To be fair, they did have two winners. The deep fried prawns wrapped inside with seaweed. It was tasty and had many pieces of prawns. Not cheap at $18.95, but given the volume, it's reasonable. The other one was the beef noodle in soup. This was not on the dinner menu, as it's usually more of a lunch item, but the waitress said they can especially prepare it for us. The kitchen served up a large bowl, which we were able to share among four of us. We then realized at the end that this was only possible because it costs $17.95. Maybe it's "reasonable" too, but I think the waitress could have told us how much more it was going to cost compared to the lunch menu. All in all, I think it was a good meal, but at the prices we paid, I think we can fare better in other Richmond Shanghainese establishments. Given its location, which is remote and removed from the busy strips in Richmond, they would have to rely on reputation, which they can build if they focus on the quality of their service and products. read more

I have been here since they were at their old location. Now they have moved to a bigger space at Best Western, across from Costco. When I come here, I always order the same thing. Peking duck 2 ways ( Peking duck and lettuce wrap), XLB, and a noodle dish. We love their XLB's. It's not as juicy as the one at crystal mall, but these are delicious. Perfect amount of soup and flavor. These are $6.95. It's a must order, in fact everyone orders these, that when the servers bring you tea, they also bring the vinegar. Duck 2 ways: Peking duck and lettuce wrap. I mean, it's self explanatory, delicious!!! These are $43. Today I tried some new stuff. We ordered the szhechuan beef noodle soup, deep fried roll, jellyfish and this fried red bean paste dessert. Szhechuan beef noodle Hmm, I'm not sure what to say. The beef is flavorful, but other than that, it's quite bland. Maybe it doesn't taste like this on the reg, but it was not good. I much rather go to wangs beef noodle house or richmond centres pearl castle and order their beef noodle and put chili oil in it. Jellyfish My gf wanted to order this for some reason. It was a bit salty, and not as crunchy as the ones you get when you go to the banquet. Not bad though. Deep-fried buns Nothing special, typical. You really can't go wrong. I was here today for lunch. It was so so good. I ordered all vegetarian dishes and loved them. We ordered stir fried vegetables to start and they were the epitome of fresh- vibrant colors, and flavours. I typically use soya sauce on dishes like this as they often lack seasoning ( at least to me) and in place there is usually an overuse of garlic. Not the case here - the vegetables were seasoned with just the right amount of salt and so good. We also had the vegetarian sping rolls. Clearly hand rolled, crisp and fresh with a great homemade sweet and sour sauce. We also ordered a great vegetarian fried rice. The rice itself was strangely not fried, but still really good. The service was exceptional - despite being very busy was so efficient and cheerful. I cant wait to go back. It was wonderful. read more

I generally eat in at Shanghai Wonderful (back at the old location), but I was pleasantly surprised with their efficient take out process. Not only was the food ready at exactly the pick up time but it was still piping hot and delicious. We ordered a fried rice dish, a seafood fried noodle and the peking duck to go. Everything was delicious and spot on. My only complaint is that they should separate out the shrimp crackers that come with the peking duck. Especially if they've gone and separated out everything else. These things just come out chewy instead of crunchy as a result. Otherwise, I'd definitely do take out again! Next time though I will have to come by and check out the XLB again to give a more accurate review of this place. read more

Parking seems like it could suck though if a table of 10 brings in 5 cars :D Food was overall good, juicy XLB, seemed to taste of soy sauce though, service was really decent with the food coming out at a good rate until middle of the way through, a plate came that was a mix up and after that, it all took a long time and dragged out for some reason.
