Havn't been here in years. Can't even remember the last time I came here. Seems like they renovated it, or changed the decor or...something. They did something. It looks a bit more polished than I remember it. We ordered an assortment of dishes. I only ate about half the dishes on the table since I don't eat meat. Prawn with scrambled egg, Prawn & Egg Fried Rice Noodle, and Chinese Mushroom & Soft Bean Curd. Those are the three dishes I was able to eat, along with some plain white rice. Hubby didn't think too much of the Prawn with scrambled egg dish. I was OK with it. Not thrilled but I think I took to it better than him. The Prawn & Egg Fried Rice Noodle was good. It had that "Wok Hei" flavor that we always look for in that dish. I loved the Chinese Mushroom & Soft Bean Curd. A hot pot dish was ordered. It just said fish on the menu, so it was originally believed that I would be able to take part in eating this dish, but when it came, there was also meat in it. As a pescatarian, I can eat fish but I don't meat from land animals. Not a huge problem for me as I was plenty full from eating the 3 aforementioned dishes. It is in principle though, a bit frustrating to order something based on the menu description and then when it comes to the table, find that it has an unwelcome ingredient in it that wasn't mentioned in the description on the menu. Came here for lunch today. This is our go-to restaurant but prices have increased a lot recently and quality has gone downhill. It is not consistent like before. Somedays it is really good and other days not great. We came here lunch and ordered the 3 dish special which came with soup and a bucket of rice and free steamed chicken. One word - consistency! Every time I come here to satisfy my Chinese food cravings, they always deliver a great and flavourful meal. The congee is fantastic, the special fried rice is a go-to, the spicy fried silver fish or squid is another favourite, and last but not least, their buddha feast with tofu is top notch! The portions are big and great value for money. The servers are always in a hurry and aren't the most polite but they get the job done. The only negative comment I have is that they only accept cash, but sometimes they do allow you to pay by debit card. read more

Used to come here quite a bit for quick tasty dishes of gai see chow mein, beef chow fun and fried fish in cream corn because it's comfort food! I've had a not so great wor wonton soup (shrimp suffered freezer burn). There was large portions to satisfy a family of 6-8 and pretty quick service. The ambience is pretty much big place and nothing fancy. However, decided to come here for lunch since it has been a while since my last family visit. it was just before the lunch rush so got a table right away and checked out the menu. Lots of items crossed off but it didn't affect me since we were here for a few favourite items. Ordered wonton ( shrimp ) and dumpling in soup - it was a large bowl with baby bok choy hiding at the base. There were 5 dumplings and 6 nice big wontons - those were pretty yummy and amazed at how large they were! We also got gai see chow mein and beef fried noodles(gwon gnau haw ) and portions were much smaller and there was more bean sprouts and onions compared to actual noodles! The chicken was sad - tiny mangled pieces that looked like scrapings off the bone and I had some tough chewy pieces and more sauce and bean sprouts than noodles. The beef dish was just okay - lots of scallions, onions and bean sprouts compared to noodles and sauce was thinner than usual. Flavour was lacking for both noodle dishes like they skimped on oyster sauce or something ! It's too bad when quality goes down but hopefully they will rectify it. read more

Sometimes you just need some solid good Chinese food! I love coming here with my family. It's busy on most days so, please be prepared to wait a bit. The wait is worth it though! Some of our favourite dishes are the beef and vegetable chow mein, fried rice, sweet and sour pork, and the salted pork congee with century egg and chinese dumplings. The portions are generous and the prices are affordable. I like ordering a lot so that we can take home the leftovers! This is a spartan place to get your homestyle cantonese noodle and congee fix. Decor is plain, service is brusque (w/o being rude), and dishes come out fast. Prices were pretty good for what you're getting. We ordered 4 dishes, the winner being the beef fried chow fun. Great taste, not oily, and good portion size. The noodle soups were tasty but middling and not too large. The stewed beef pieces were tender and the dumplings were large. Unfortunately, the Singapore rice noodle lacked saltiness and there was very little meat nor egg in the dish. If you want noodle for a good price, this could be regular place for you. read more

Good pricing on items. We enjoyed the noodle soup with wontons and beef stew. Both of the noodle soup were good. However the noodle portion was smaller than I expected. And only the beef stew noodle bowl had vegetable. I believe that all noodle soup bowls should come with vegetable. The presentation of the wonton noodle soup was upside down. All I could see initially was just noodle and nothing else. I thought that was weird. We also order the beef chow fun and singapore fried noodle. This is third in the "chain" of Congee Noodle places that the site and I have visited this year. It's in a neighbourhood that can only be described as "challenged", as you have a floor to ceiling view of the fentanyl crisis in Vancouver playing out before you as you dine. However, with so many of the old school Hong Kong style Cantonese noodle houses closing down in Chinatown over the last few years (Hon's, we miss you!) Congee Noodle King can still deliver a reliably decent old school lunch. Decent congee (Congee Noodle House is better), and they are often out of the salted donut (Youtiao) from my experience. In fact, last time I was there, they were out of several items on the menu. All in all, congee is like pizza. Even when it's not the best, it's still pretty damn good! Have not been back since COVID. Was out early doing errands, decided to have some congee for breakfast, one of the quintessential item for a Chinese breakfast. The restaurant is open at 10am! It is a no frill Chinese restaurant, they had done some reconfiguration of the tables, not so tightly packed pre-COVID. The tables are nicely spaced, place looks a lot more tidy & clean. If you are looking for congee... look no further, this is the place! We ordered the large bowl of dried oyster, century eggs & shredded pork. Unfortunately they do not have the fried donut fritters that goes superbly well with congee. The congee was flavourful & full of ingredients to the point that the congee was thick like oatmeal. Not the fanciest place but I love the wonton noodles here. The food gets served pretty quickly after you place our order and all their items have good portion sizes. Probably one of the reason that makes them one of the neighbourhoods favourites! Go early and drop your name as there will be some waiting around. I was also really impressed with the staffs efforts to maintain social distancing. Whenever I think congee, I envision their green awning near the corner of Kingsway and Joyce. There are other places to go, but it's like Kleenex and tissue or Q-Tips and cotton swabs. They offer a wide variety of savoury congees. My favourite? Pork and century egg. Although, I have also tried their congee with fish and it was pretty good stuff. They do offer significantly more options beyond congee, but all I can think about is congee right now. Oh! You also gotta get the deep fried silverfish (white minnow) with spicy salt and chili. Lo and behold, Congee noodle king emerged before us on Kingsway. And yes, that all we had. A fish Congee and a Sui gao mien. I asked for extra ginger in the Congee and there were a good amount. August 2022 Just had to come back again for the perfectly cooked wonton in a bowl of a bit undercooked noodle AND my once every month treat - deep fried pork intestines! I only dare to eat this infrequently as it's just too much cholesterol and Uric acid (ouch!). My better half ordered the sweet and sour pork rice - nothing special except at least it's not all fat/grizzle like many other places. Nothing's changed except that I was a bit put off by them asking for more tip when I left only about 12%! Been coming to this place almost forever especially before the pandemic when they open for late night dishes (a ver popular Cantonese late night dine out tradition). Their food is decent, as for customer service don't have your expectations high, and their prices are fair. Fast forward it after the lockdowns, they are now only open till 8pm and spaced out the dining area a bit more now. This time around decided to eat a quick noodle soup while waiting for the take out order, here were the dine in and take out food we ordered; 1. Assorted beef rice noodle soup. It's okay as expected, the assorted beef were tender and came in generous portion. The soup base was typical soup base use for all soup base. 2. Beef brisket and tendon rice noodle soup. Pretty decent and thank goodness the tendons were soft and tender. 3. 2 Crabs and 1 lobster with butter and cream sauce. Pretty good and tasty. This is one of the very few Chinese restaurants I order live seafood take out from because they are pretty honest on the weight of the seafood and has the fairest price . Most Chinese restaurants over exaggerate the weight and over charge. Overall, this restaurant is my go to restaurant whenever I want to order live crabs and lobsters take outs. Or whenever I am in the area and just want some quick and casual Chinese food. If you love your live crab and lobster then I would highly recommend this place cause for sure you are paying the fairest price and not over paying for an exaggerated weight like a lot of restaurants charge you for and gets away with it. I was here on yesterday (Jan 19th) for a breakfast with my family. We ordered Century Egg with Pork Congee($6.95), Mushroom with Prawn Congee ($8.50) and Rice Roll with Shrimp ($4.50) on the side. Congee- it came out piping hot and also had thick consistency. Toppings could've been sliced into a bite size. Prawn Congee had big chunks of mushroom and prawns. This one was a winner! Century Egg with Pork Congee had big chunks of pork as well. We first thought it was a wrong order in the beginning. Rice Roll was good. I wish that cook cut them into pieces, but we managed to share the food together. Rice Roll came as 3 pieces per dish. It was simple and satisfying. For flavourful, delicious congee, my go-tos are the two Congee Noodle King and House. It's not too pricey and the congee is always great. I came on a weekday morning and before 11 am, they have breakfast specials, which is $1-2 cheaper than regular price on certain items. That day, I had assorted meat congee (liver, kidney, meat ball, stomach, heart). To be honest, I didn't really read the menu carefully before and I don't think I've ever had "heart" in this congee. The congee was silky a d a good flavour, but I noticed that there were less ingredients than before. Perhaps they decrease the amount of food due to the discount? I like to get a side order of sweet Chinese donut and it goes really well with the congee. This wasn't fresh, but still had a good crunch. I also got the steamed shrimp rice rolls - not too silky smooth, but a good amount of shrimp. It's not a fancy place and it's comfort, Hong Kong food. You know what it is when you enter Congee Noodle King. Of course you are going to get rude service and salty food. There's a reason for that. This Joyce and Kingsway institution serves the community and only answers to its loyal patrons. I've seen couples in their 70s occupying a 8-person; dining slowly while reading their Sing Tao. That's the kind of respect I want when I am 70. Don't come here and complain if you can't appreciate what this place means for the neighborhood. Re. Food, ya it is salty but just ask them to be less heavy handed beforehand. There is always one item on the menu that should satisfy your craving. Having come here many times along with family, I've gone back and forth a lot on what I think of this restaurant. Sometimes I think to myself 'wow, I'm probably not gonna have better Chinese food at a different place'. Other times it's fine but I know things could have been a lot better. There's lots of ups, and now and then there's a small down. After much mulling, I think this place is like a box of chocolates. You never really know how good the food will be. Gotta talk about service and appearance first. I'm pretty down about how this place looks. At best it feels serviceable and fine. For me it's just pretty dull. Weird shade of blue on the walls and furniture doesn't really look that great. For some strange reason too, I feel like the TV they have is never on anymore. Not sure why you'd have a TV and then not show anything. This place fluctuates a lot between being almost full of people and it's full of people with another restaurant full of people waiting outside or by the door. Service can be a bit slow or lacking at times just cause there's a lot of fires to handle but I think it's understandable based on the demographic they aim for. Obviously the most important thing about a restaurant is the food. How does Congee Noodle King stack up against the rest? I think on their absolute worst day, the food from this place is still good. That's a really solid standard to have where you can come into a restaurant and feel assured you're getting a good meal. The days where they're able to perform better, you're definitely going to think to yourself that it's some of the better if not best Chinese food you're having. My favourite dish is fook-chow style fried rice and I feel like it encapsulates pretty well what I'm trying to say. Sometimes it comes with too little sauce and I end up having too much fried rice. Sometimes it comes with too much and the end of my dish feels like the last few sips from a bowl of soup. But I never think to myself 'Oh boy this is terrible, I never want to come here again' at all. It's always 'Ehh not as great as that one time but it's not that far off' kind of a problem. At the end of the day, pretty solid place to go eat. Wish there was a bit more consistency with the quality of the dish but that's probably difficult to ask for with how many customers there are and the huge variety of dishes on their menu. Bottom line is that you're gonna have a good meal here and sometimes you're gonna have an awesome one. I came in with low expectations but was really impressed with most of the food we ordered. The wonton noodle soup was delicious. Noodles were not soggy, broth was flavorful and authentic, and big wontons mostly shrimp. This was probably my favorite wonton noodle soup I've had in Vancouver. I usually come here for wonton noodle soup if I am In the neighbourhood. It is my favourite item on the menu. Some of the other regular items are; Sweet + Sour Pork - I do recommend it. Not overly sweet and the meat is not super fatty. There is good crunch to it. Usually served with green peppers, onion slices and lychees. House Special Chow Mein - if you want a good assortment of toppings. I always enjoy crispy noodles though I am not a fan of super huge slices of meat and an entire thing of bok choy. It is just awkward to eat and Chinese restaurants do not automatically give you a knife to cut down your food so I don't ever see the logic here. This place is not the only place that serves food this way, it is pretty standard in Vancouver when it comes to Cantonese cuisine. There are many big tables here. They can seat 8 comfortably. So if you are in a small group, you may be ask to share tables if all the smaller tables are taken. The food is typical HK style. I had the wonton noodle (dry version) which hit the spot. The wontons were quite big and the noodle was a lot. You could probably share this if you are a small eater, or pack the leftovers. Went here last night for dinner with a friend at 6:45pm and was able to score a free parking spot at the back and got seated immediately. They promptly gave us two mugs of tea but only one copy of each different menu so it took awhile for my friend and I to decide what we wanted while swapping 4 separate menus between the two of us. My friend ordered soup dumplings with noodles and I got the seafood and chinese mushroom chow mein. My noodles came within 5 to 7 minutes and my friend's soup dumplings came 2 minutes later EXCEPT there were only soup dumplings! We flagged down a server and my friend got noodles "added" for an extra $2, which to me seemed like a rip off as if they had input the order correctly soup dumplings with noodles cost $6.95 but they charged my friend soup dumplings ($7.95) plus an additional $2 for noodles totaling $9.95, which is an expensive bowl of soup dumpling noodles for a Chinese restaurant. Mind you my friend probably got more soup dumplings and maybe more noodles but my friend didn't want to make a scene and paid the extra $3 so she can eat her food right away instead of waiting longer and probably encounter attitude from the servers. Food is good, as well as portion sizes. It's a typical Chinese congee noodle establishment where service is quick, food is good, and prices are reasonable but don't expect much else. My second time here - this is a go to for my local relatives because of its proximity to their home, variety on the menu, and value for money. I wasn't convinced at first by the outdated décor and disorganized staff on the floor, but my revisit took those concerns away. Probably one of the better tasting Chinese food places in the area to be honest, so there's that to give it more points. It gets busy as it's clearly a common hangout for many families, so call in advance or arrive early! Or just be ready to wait. Or get takeout! Service is limited but the staff are really trying and they have good memory - so be patient! Both times I was here for dinner. Their combo deals have a lot of variety and I was overall satisfied in that I found something I want to eat, and it was decent! The combo comes with soup and rice and dessert so it's your classic Cantonese style dinner all in one. There wasn't anything that stood out - this place is more for casual eats and enjoying a meal together with family. The sweet and sour pork was a bit subpar - but not the worst I suppose. That's probably the most memorable thing to me...but again, already one of the better Chinese meals I enjoyed in Vancouver. And this price point! Really not bad. read more

Had hight expectation of their food, but came in under as well as their service. Had to remind them several times of our drinks. The porridge was starchy and cooked well, but the rice noodle did not have the smooth texture, a bit rubbery. The fried bread inside was flat. The won ton was large, mostly with shrimp paste and meat. The duck was favorable and lean; stir fried noodles were coated well with oyster sauce, but tossed too much that noodles were broken and came with many tiny pieces.
