My family went here for dinner based on its recognition in the Chinese Restaurant Awards (2022), Vancouver Magazine Best Restaurants Awards (2024) and countless Instagram reviews. We made a reservation on OpenTable (which is a rare platform to use among Chinese restaurants in Greater Vancouver). We were seated a few minutes after arrival. The space feels energetic. It's a more modern restaurant, so there is much color and younger vibrancy than a traditional Chinese restaurant. What else is different? No round tables - only smaller square tables - which means it's better designed for small groups rather than large groups. We ended up trying a number of items: - Beef Belly Skewers: Very good. Everyone loved them. I wished we had ordered more. - Chicken Skewers: Ok. I think asked for something but they ran out and gave us gizzards and hearts, which are never good because they become mealy and not enjoyable to eat. - Dungeness Crab with Salty Egg Yolk: Good. Prepared as well as lots of restaurants. They provide disposable gloves to eat with, but nothing to crack the shells. - Stir Fried Vegetables: Good. No complaints. - Fresh Fish with Tofu Hot Pot: Very good. - Fresh Fish Steamed: Very good. - Lobster with Sticky Rice: Very good. Service is really very good. Genuinely more friendly and talkative than I'm accustomed too, but I appreciated. Overall, a good meal. It was different in that the decor and service is what really stood out, and that's the difference maker compared to most other Chinese restaurants with the same quality of food. The Fish Man was probably our favorite meal during our winter road trip. We made reservations thinking that we might try the king crab. We changed our mind on the king crab since we were only a party of 3. We ended up ordering a geoduck clam two ways, as sashimi and poached, a Dungeness crab with salted egg yolk, and a seafood fried rice. The food was fantastic. The clam whether poached or sashimi was briny and had a great crunch to it. It was very good with a little bit of lemon. The crab came with fried rice cakes. The salted egg yolk gave it a nice flavor. They cooked it perfectly. The fried rice was one of the best fried rice that we've ever had. The rice came with full size shrimp. We weren't expecting dessert, but, I think because our family of 3 ordered so much, they gave us a complimentary dessert. We enjoyed everything about our meal at the Fish Man. The Fish Man is a great spot for fresh seafood. We the seasonal meal. The mala razor clams were the highlight as it was great flavor and texture! The lobster was slightly disappointing as it lacked flavor or depth. The lobster itself felt fresh, but seems a bit small/little meat for 3lb. Would love to go back and try other things on their menu. Staff was friendly and able to answer all of our questions. There were plenty of tables available at 1:30pm. This is a fantastic place for Chinese seafood, particularly the ingredients and cooking. Everything was incredibly fresh and juicy. Seafood should be fresh and less salty with more natural flavours. If you don't like their cooking style then that's your problem and you shouldn't bother with Chinese seafood or Chinese food. The only thing holding it back from a perfect five stars is the service and price. I understand the price considering the location and BC but the service is lacking. read more

Fish Man has always had a decent reputation in Richmond, and coming back after 2 years, i was very disappointed by how far the quality has fallen. I was recommended by a friend to try their sour cabbage fish, but unfortunately the dish was some how more sweet than sour, with a strong taste of MSG that didnt even contribute to the umami that MSG is known for. We ordered the ling cod, but it did not taste too fresh. The clams we ordered, although big, was also underseasoned, and a bit undercooked too giving it a slightly fishy taste that a sign of poor quality int the raw ingredient. Overall, a bland disppointment. The prawns however, were pretty good. The skins were crispy, flavourful and easy to eat! We also tried some of their bbq skewers, and that too was quite mid. Nothing to special about it. While the service is average and the environment lively, the quality food is not up to par anymore, and given the general quality of chinese food in richmond, i would not waste a meal here. read more

The first thought I had when the sour lingcod dish came out was that it is so much bigger than anything served in restaurants in NYC! The flavor was still very on point although I would have liked it spicier. The other main fish we ordered, which was a rockfish on their signature grill with a mix of toppings, was a bit less exciting as it tasted a bit over cooked and not spicy enough. It could have been an off hour because the restaurant was technically on lunch break when we came in. The skewers were also mostly delicious, but a few pieces were a bit over cooked as well and ate dry. The chicken wing ended up being the best, with the intestine being a second. All the appetizers were great, with my personal favorite being the cold tofu and thousand year egg dish. read more

Ambiance--really nice decor with parking in the back and street parking. Service--service was a mixed bag and I was left a little confused. We didn't have reservations but the restaurant was empty. The host came across with his comment as if they were going to make an exception for us. It was 4:15pm. The tea cup was dirty (orange grease food stain that was put in the clean pile) so had to replace that after I requested. We ordered rice and it wasn't until after the food was brought out and we requested that the rice came out. In addition, the food platters didnt have serving spoons. Had to ask for ther and got one small spoon. Food--the lobster was ok. Main seasoning was salt. I didn't taste the ginger flavor or scallion flavor despite having it in the lobster. Richmond is the place for some fantastic, wonderfully fresh seafood. The Fish Man is the restaurant to eat at if you're looking for fresh, whole fish cooked in a variety of different styles and sauces to select from. We ordered the special fish of the day, which was a flathead mullet. The server told us the smallest one will be about 2lbs. We opted for black bean sauce and added in a golden combo (cabbage, lotus root, seaweed, and bean curd) cooked along with the fish. We also ordered some ribeye beef skewers and the jumbo prawns. The fish comes out in a pan that is on charcoal briquettes that burned for about 30 min, the perfect amount of time for us to finish the dish piping hot the whole time. The server brought out the live, flapping fish to make sure the size and look of it was acceptable to us before they cooked it. There was so much food! We pretty much ate the entire fish and the skewers. We had some prawns leftover. Everything was amazing and fresh. Seafood is definitely the thing to order here. We'll skip on the beef skewers next time. The restaurant is pretty big and was full the entire time we were there. They open late so a great place for a late meal if in the area. I made a reservation for a Thursday evening, and found the place was pretty packed. After being seated, we were given menus, which offered a wide array of seafood options, as well as skewers. My party ordered beef brisket skewers, lamb skewers, Thai curry dungeoness crab, scallops and vermicelli, geoduck in scallion and ginger sauce, and a pork belly and chanterelle mushroom stir fry. Our favorite items were the lamb skewers, dungeoness crab, scallops, and pork belly and chanterelle mushroom stir fry. The lamp was well seasoned (cumin peppercorn seasoning) and very tender. The crab was nearly 3lbs, and very fresh. The Thai curry sauce paired well with the crab and is very tasty with the rice it is served over. The scallops were very garlicky, which I personally like. Surprisingly, I disliked the beef brisket skewers, which had a very gamey flavor. I also did not like the geoduck dish, as it was very bland. This is an expensive meal, and you will be dropping $$$ as it is a seafood joint. For our table of 6, we ordered black bean Manila clams, pea sprouts, claypot with oyster, abalone, tofu, salted egg yolk snow crab, seafood fried rice, and the lingcod grilled fish pot. The service was very minimal. We tried to flag down a server many times but failed :/ Before our food was cooked, our waitress showed us the raw seafood they were going to prepare for us (customary for Chinese seafood dishes). The food was pretty good. We loved the claypot, clams, and crab. For the price, I would expect to be really blown away. It was good, but the total came out to more than $300. We made reservations for 5 people on a weeknight. They weren't that busy so it probably wasn't necessary. Our friends raved about this place, but we were taken aback with how much stuff there was on the menu! We ended up ordering: The grill with lingcod (for less bones), in the savoury spicy flavour (it wasn't very spicy at all), with enoki mushrooms, bean curd, and tofu. We also ordered 5 skewers of beef ribeye and 10 skewers of the fatty beef (because you have to get 5+ of each skewer). The mussels were great, we loved the black bean sauce. Not pictured was cucumber salad which was also great. They must have mistyped our order as they'd forgotten a few things which we ended up cancelling rather than wait. If you like Oysters, I recommend the "Beach Oysters" - this was one of the best dish they had. Aside from that, I liked the skewers (my recommendation: Beef Tongue!!). Best meal I had during a recent trip to Richmond..... and its is so good I would consider driving the 200 miles to eat again. However, there is a queue even if you make a reservation, and the wait is not much shorter. When we got there, the queue was 45minutes. A lady arriving just behind us also with a party of two was told that she had to wait 30 minutes even though she was 5 minutes early for her reservation! We came for the hot-pot fish, and so we ordered one. A medium ling cod with the sour cabbage flavour and Golden Combo sides that turned out to be huge. We initially LOVED the eclectic take on seafood - we ordered the raw oysters with sea urchin, ginger scallion geoduck, lobster with salty egg encrustation, and grouper fish pot. Everything tasted delicious and we were very impressed by the presentation. Then, one of our girls fell ill that night and found out she had food poisoning which r took her out for two days of an otherwise awesome ski trip to Whistler. We believe it was a bad oyster. And while this comes with the turf of raw foods, we rarely get food poisoning from eating raw items, but please be forewarned. Sad to say we will not be coming back to this establishment. read more

It was quite busy during lunch on the weekend, but it is definitely worth a visit. The interior is nicely decorated and cute and we were seated fairly quickly despite how busy it was. The servers were attentive and did a good job! We ordered the grilled fish in a medium size. We chose the sour cabbage option and it was so good. The fish was soft and easy to scoop up and mix with the rice. I recommend coming here with a small party just to get the fish. The skewers were also very flavorful. Came here on Wednesday around 8 and there were a few tables left. There is a small lot and street parking. There are a few plazas around here, but parking isn't too difficult. The first time we came here, the roasted fish was amazing, but this time around, it was not very flavorful. This time, we ordered a medium lingcod with mala broth, golden combo (chinese cabbage, lotus root, bean curd, and seaweed), and flat noodles. We wanted a small fish, but apparently they were out of stock of a lot of fish, and we were left with a bigger fish that we barely ate half of. It was either a medium lingcod or a frozen fish, which we didn't want. In hindsight, we should have just ordered other dishes. We were traveling in the area, so we don't have a means of eating it the next day, so we wasted a lot of the fish, which was a shame. It was pretty bland this time, so I would give this a 3.5/5. Lamb skewers were pretty good, but it didn't have enough seasoning on it. You must order 4 skewers of the same meat, so we ended up getting 4 lamb skewers. I would say this is a 3/5. Baked oysters 4 ways, I had 2 of them and they weren't cleaned very well, as there were sand on them and I had to eat it very carefully. The flavors were pretty good and they do taste different, but since it wasn't cleaned very well, I would say it's a 2.5/5. It was so good the first time we came here, the fish soaked in the mala seasoning and it was spicy and so good. Maybe it was a fluke when we went this time. Stir fry snail was very tasty. Prefer the stir fry style versus just picking it out of the snail itself with a toothpick. The snail meat is already picked out for you. Do not order the geoduck stir fry. it is a rip off. About $58 for a dish that mixes in with strips of pork belly. But at the price point, you expect a dish with only pieces of geoduck. Very little of it. Stir fried clams were good but as with most cases with clams, some have sand in it. Good place for large groups. read more

There is a minimum of 5 orders per skewer type, so it's slightly expensive if you think about how much one skewer costs. For example, the cabbage rolls cost $2.99 per skewer, so it was a total of $14.95 for 5 cabbage rolls. Great flavors, but slightly overpriced for vegetables. A plate of eggplant costs $8 for two thinly sliced grilled eggplant. Very oily and a little too salty for me. The rice was also dry. But, staff was friendly! read more
