I wasn't happy with the service and I honestly won't be back to this restaurant. I also left be hotel know that this restaurant was completely unsatisfactory and one of the other guests overheard me and agreed that the service and food were not great. In my case, they offered the lunch special online and then refused to honor that rate because it was a "holiday". If you don't offer your lunch special on holidays, why not take it off of the online menu? Instead, the owner pressured my wife (who is super sweet) into paying for a full sized portion that I didn't want and didn't end up eating. They charged me extra ($3) for fried rice and didn't include it and forget my brown rice. All in all, the food wasn't great and the hassles after ordering the food were unacceptable. There is another Chinese restaurant that the hotel told us about that is called "Empire". We should have given them a try because the food and service at this one were pretty bad. read more

We came in on a Friday evening, around 8pm. It was a warm October evening and the place was very warm, uncomfortably so. They had no ventilation, not a fan going or a door open to let the evening breeze through. We sat in building heat. Why did we do that? The waitress came over and handed us a take out menu--red flag #2--that had rather pricey options, which we would not have minded but you normally get a soup or egg roll, nope, not this place. Also, $2 extra for fried rice. They also did not provide the usual fare, noodles and duck sauce before the meal. No extras at this place We ordered Mongolian beef and General Tso, both were flavorful and served on small individual platters. We had to seek our our server for the check, not sure why since the place was 90% empty and she was just fanning herself at the checkout counter The check came but without the customary fortune cookie--red flag #3. This restaurant serves some of the best Chinese we've ever had. The flavors are remarkable. This has been our go to restaurant of this style for about 3 years. We've always gotten take-out. However, the ordering has been inconsistent from rushed to surly to exasperated. Clarity and control seem not to be on the job description of the order takers... Tonight was no different. At least, in the past, we've always gotten what we ordered. Tonight WAS different. Tonight's order was our usual which included the stir-fried pea sprout. I know this isn't always available and so I asked if it was. The order taker said yes we have it. Great! Finished the order and she said it would be ready in 15 min. I asked "would you like my phone number?" (they always ask for it). She said no need. "This is the only order."... Got there to pick it up and there were a bunch of take-out orders on the counter. So, because I hadn't given my phone number I had to recite the order to her so she could figure out which was mine. (For some reason it is always awkward picking up even with reciting a phone number). Well, she quickly recognized the order and proceeded to tell me that they didn't have the pea sprouts. Oh my. Guess it would have helped to have given my number. She did have an order of bok choy she said would be free if I accepted. I declined by saying my second choice was the bok choy with black mushroom (if you haven't tried it you must). This is where the problem became glaringly apparent. Though the recipes are amazing I think the staff views them and their customers as commodities. I said I'd rather have the bok choy w/ black mushroom. She protested that it wouldn't be free due to cost. I replied, "it's not about the cost, it's what I'd like". During this whole thing she had opened the bag to show me the free selection and I looked into the bag to make sure the other things were there. Uh, where's the beef cumin? More exasperated fumbling around. At this point I was feeling genuinely sorry for her. She said something to the effect that it was her first day. During all this the guy who looks like the manager or perhaps the owner was right there and didn't lift a finger to help. In fact, he ignored everything that was going on. Remember the commodity comment above? Trickle down indifference... So, she hustled to the kitchen to, I assume, to get the beef. After a few minutes she came back with the order complete. And, to her credit, she had the kitchen add black mushrooms to the bok choy and did not charge me for them. Though the dinner was delicious my body said uh uh. My guess was that the beef may not have been properly cooked in the rush. My advice to management is to invest in your front. They are the face of your business. Take some pride in the amazing menu that you have and ensure your cook staff shares that pride. And finally, it really can't be all that difficult to come up with a more consistent and reliable take-out ordering system. Try this - give each order a number and tell it to the customer. "I'm here for order #72", and behold, there's a nice big bold 72 on the ticket stapled to the 2nd bag from the right... I really, really don't want to stop eating your food. If you like really good, non corn starchy Chinese food that is tasty, clean, with an attentive wait staff for a Chinese restaurant, this is your place. I bought an extra Mapo Tofu to take home for morning eggs over the next few days. I never do that! The cold spicy noodles were ok, but the Szechuan spicy cucumbers were really good, and useful to cool down a bit when eating the tofu! We also got a lamb spicy dish that was funky because it was sliced tough lamb. The rest of the dish was good though! I'm going again and the main problem is figuring out what to try next. read more

Food is absolutely amazing. it's weird, google maps say this places closes at 9:45 pm and when i called they said they close at 9:20pm? My issue is the menu and the guy who took our delivery order. The menu says Jump shrimp with dry pepper and the man over the phone said they don't have that, we went back and forth i said S15 says this and he kept saying other orders. I eventually just got baby shrimp with salt and pepper? I tried to order wings they said they don't have wings, tried to order boneless spare ribs they said they don't have any and never have. You know the place is authentic when you and your party are the only ones speaking English in the entire restaurant. The flavors of the dishes we tried were very assertive; bold notes of ginger, garlic, peppers, and other ingredients prominent in Szechuan cuisine will take over your palate (but hopefully, in a good way). If you're someone who likes Chinese food because of the traditional Chinese dishes from your favorite takeout joint, keep in mind that the food here is very different. We stared off with the Dan Dan noodles- our waiter asked us if we wanted it Chinese style or American style. Not sure what the difference implies, but of course we chose the Chinese style. It had an appropriate level of heat and was very good. We also ordered the spring beef and dry pepper chicken. The spring beef came in a broth that was a bit too fatty for me, but my friend enjoyed it. As for the chicken, some pieces were a little oily when I bit into them, but the flavors were pretty good. Portions were very generous. Service was a bit lacking- we were first waited on by someone who barely spoke English (I guess that speaks to the authenticity though) and then later taken over by a woman who was extremely inattentive. It probably took a good 15 minutes for her to glance up from her phone for a second long enough where I was able to gain her attention. Went there today and to say the least, I was beyond surprised in a bad way. I ordered the fried rice and lo mein. To keep it simple, the chefs definitely knew what they were doing with that lo mein. It had me filled to the brim and was quite delightful. When it comes to the fried rice, that is where I have to draw the line. No peas, no carrots, straight soy sauce with no msg and no flavoring. The chunks of egg in it were beyond massive. To call it a punishment would be an understatement. As hungry as I was, I struggled for over three hours to put down a simple bowl of fried rice. Chicken Lo Mein was $10.95 but barely had chicken in it . Beef cumin dish yummy but way over priced too. $17.95 for what? Tea came in plastic tumblers (no tea cups) and we asked twice for forks but didn't get any. This restaurant is still going through its growing pains. We wanted to try this place but we're not into spicy Szechuan and they do have normal food choices. Beware, no lunches on weekends. Only hot and sour soup with lunch. If you want wonton, it will be a la carte. So we ordered a shredded pork and "leek" dish and whole fish with pine nuts. The leek is really chive which the waitor was not aware of. The whole fish was sweet and sour sauce poured over a whole fish with the head which is not mentioned in the menu. With tea delivered upon being seated, it's always a plus. Shredded pork in garlic sauce on the lunch menu was pretty darn good. Spiced in flavor and full of well cooked veggies, I can appreciate the balance with heat and spice. It was my first time and having had great Chinese food in Chinatowns across the country, this place was a venture for me. Finally found the time to come to this place after wanting to go for some time. I think the wait was definitely worth it. Went around 4PM on a Sunday. A quick note is that the parking is very easy if you are from out of town, the parking garage is about 1 block away. Food (5/5): This is real, authentic, Szechuan food. I have ordered Mapo Dofu at so many restaurants claiming to be authentic, and they have all fell flat except for here. A suspension of tons of szechuan peppercorns, fermented black beans, and hot oil coat perfectly seasoned cubes of silken tofu accompanied by expertly cooked white rice. I ordered it extra spicy and they did not disappoint. My hot and sour soup was both hot and sour (what a surprise!), and had a deep earthy flavor from the generous addition of wood ear mushrooms. The wonton soup was great as well, the broth was obviously home made (not the sickly yellow broth found at every Chinese American restaurant) and when I ate a wonton it literally exploded in my mouth with juices. We ordered dry pot duck, but I do not think that is what we received, the waitress seemed confused even though I pointed to what I wanted on the menu. It was more of a stew, but it was extremely delicious so no complaints. The salty broth imbued with fat and marrow from the duck bones was the perfect match for potatoes and a steaming bowl of rice. Price (4/5): Generally the prices are fair, its not an amazing deal or anything but its not to bad either. 2 soups and 2 meals were $37 before tip (but we also got duck which was one of the more expensive items). Ambiance (3/5): Pretty sparse, the seating has a weird layout. Some cool decorations but the plastic flowers in the rafters were a bit weird. Just fine though. Service (3/5): Like I said, I don't think we got what we ordered, and the waitress was just OK service wise. Parts of the menu are only in Chinese, and I guess it's not their fault I can't read Chinese but still. Food came out quickly and hot. Not the best service but really it was fine. Szechuan is my favorite style of Chinese cuisine; this restaurant disappointed me. There was no fire and little flavor in my or my partner's entrees. Even "hot oil" was not available. In the Lehigh Valley area, this is the best Chinese restaurant I've been to. The Sichuan dishes are very good and rival the same offerings at Han Dynasty or any place in Philadelphia Chinatown (such as Bai Wei which is great). Had the Dry Hot Pot with Beef, Crispy Duck, Dan Dan Noodles, Snow Pea Leaves, Chicken in Spicy Chili sauce (cold app), Scallion pancakes, and dumplings. The Dry Hot Pot was really good, fresh beef, enoki mushrooms, wood ear mushrooms, fresh bamboo shoots and vegetables in a delicious fiery broth. The Dan Dan noodles were also good, minced pork in a spicy sauce with just a hint of peanut. The snow pea leaves were as good as you'll find in any Chinese restaurant. The prices are good too, cheaper than most suburban Chinese restaurants. The service is ok, when they are busy, I can see it being a little hectic. If you want to be coddled and you like chit chatting all day with the staff, this might not be for you. read more

Had to do a night flight from Allentown Airport to Sacramento, CA. I ordered Shang Wei Szechuan through Uber Eats. Brought the food onboard the cockpit. About two hours into the flight, I ate the Chicken Broccoli and Szechaun Dumplings. (I was going to heat it all up in the onboard over, but was too hungry and simply chowed down.) The sauce on dumplings was spicy and great flavor, excellent appetizer. The chicken broccoli, with added spice by request was tasty too with fresh broccoli. Overall, very good food. The shrimp with dried peppers were soooo good!! And the scallion pancake was great. I don't eat meat but my dining companions also liked the duck and the pork dumplings. If you are in the area and you do not go to Shang Wei, you are wrong. I am not from Bethlehem, but once a year I have to go there for a few weeks for work. I get Shang Wei every other night. One of my coworkers from China showed me the spot... he says it's the most authentic food of this style that he has ever had in the States. While we were there a few years back he actually discovered that he and the head chef were from the same neighborhood, and the chef made him some off menu specialty that was very specific to their area. Shang Wei is one of the most beloved places I have found in my travels, to the extent that I've printed these photos and have them in an album. We are from very far away, but if we are ever traveling within an hour of Bethlehem, we make the detour. I am actually experiencing considerable emotional pain and longing, thinking of #80 Smoky Pork Garlic Bolt. The dishes in the photos attached are the ones I swear by. We are always on the lookout for Szechuan Chinese restaurants. There is no need to look further than ShangWeiSzechuan. Located on East 1st Street, this is the real deal. The restaurant has a very pleasant, uncrowded dining area that is clean and uncluttered. We received a very friendly greeting from May. She briefly explained that they feature authentic Szechuan food prepared by a professional chef who was trained in China. A few standard American-style dishes such as sesame chicken, General Tso's chicken, etc. are also served. Our meal began with the Szechuan style dumplings with red chili oil. These steamed dumplings were tender and filled with a pork mixture that was spicy, but not too hot. Our first main course was scallops in garlic sauce. The scallops were deep fried and served with a sweet and spicy sauce. We also shared a House Specialty dishe, Dry Pot Slice Beef. The dry pot is anything but dry. The beef was sliced very thin and tender, it was combined in a steel wok-like pot with a variety of veggies, including beautiful exotic mushrooms. The sauce was rich and spicy which made the entire dish into a type of Szechuan spicy beef stew. The pot sits on a flaming burner that burns out about half way through the meal. All the food was delicious, but the Dry Pot was off the charts good. It was fantastic. Our family was frequent diners at Red Hot Szechuan which recently closed it doors. Fear not. My husband and I were excited to see that we had an Asian restaurant a block away when we moved to Bethlehem last year. We ate inside the restaurant before the pandemic shut everything down and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. When they reopened for take-out, we happily ordered dinner to go. I am highly allergic to bell peppers and made that clear to the woman taking my order over the phone. We walked over to the restaurant and brought our order home, only to find the dish FULL of bell peppers. OK, mistakes happen. We ordered again and this time I opened the dish before leaving the restaurant. The woman assured me there were no peppers this time, which was true. We took our food home and enjoyed our meal. Tonight we ordered again. And, again, I made it clear I could not eat bell peppers. After working through the language barrier, she was certain the dish would have only hot peppers and no bell peppers. I did not check the dish when we picked it up, believing she would have made it clear to the kitchen. NOPE! Another meal of rice and soup for me! I am absolutely furious that, even when I called back to tell them they made a dangerous mistake on my order, they made no effort to make it up to me by giving me a credit or offering to remake it and deliver it. I wish I took pictures of the food but it was all really really good. We ordered two differently dumplings, green beans, chicken and broccoli, and crispy chicken I think . Came with white rice. Everything was so delicious . Couldn't stop eating the crispy chicken and the green beans. Staff is very friendly.
