They tried to up charge me from $50 to $95 for a simple shampoo and blow dry. They told me they had to charge more because it "took longer" to do my hair. That comment felt very micro aggressive as I am an ethnic woman with thicker hair and I felt very uncomfortable. They also added a headpiece on me horribly with all of the Bobby pins sticking out. I had to take it out and redo it myself. They clearly do not know how to do other ethnic looks. The lady at the front desk has a very unprofessional and nasty attitude. I am new to the area and booked an appointment with Irene at Shapes for a layered, shoulder-length cut. I was cutting off quite a bit of damaged hair. I showed a reference photo and explained what I wanted (using words like shaggy, layered, face-framing, etc.). I left with just a blunt cut, which does not suit my hair type. When I called to say I was unhappy with it, I was offered the opportunity to have it fixed by the same stylist. Again, I said I wanted layers. She asked "where it felt heavy," which was not my complaint. It was SO crooked, had a single shelf layer, was absolutely triangular, and was HORRIBLE. I had to go to an event and didn't have time to wash and style my hair because of my hectic work schedule. So I went to this salon to have my hair straightened. I asked the receptionist how much it would cost to wash and straighten my hair, explaining that I was not interested in any expensive hairstyles. She recommended two stylists, one charging $35.00 and the other $40.00. I chose the $35.00 one, but she said they were not immediately available. As I was running late for my event, I said, "Fine, I'll pay $40.00 and have my hair washed and straightened right away." So the stylist, whose name I believe was Jackie, washed and straightened my hair. I paid with my Apple phone wallet while I was talking to her at the checkout. I didn't look at the screen while I was paying because I was in a hurry. While I was still talking to Jackie, the transaction was completed. They charged me $55.00, according to my screenshot notification. I was shocked, and as I was about to walk out the door, I asked them if they had charged me the incorrect amount. I was told that the cost of washing and drying would be $55.00. The stylist flatly lied to me, saying, "no ma'am, I charge $55.00 and up for a hair cut." I informed her that it was not a haircut and that you had simply washed and blown dry my hair. I was informed upfront that I would be charged $40.00. While I was still talking to her, the receptionist ignored me and left the front desk, and no one bothered to apologize or return my money. I had to leave because I was running late for a very important event. But it was so disappointing to see the receptionist walk away from the conversation, like she doesn't care about customer service, and Jackie kept saying she charges $40.00 and up for the cut. That is simply lying on my face. I'm very disappointed that they kept my money without my permission, lied to me, and took advantage of the fact that I needed to go to the event as soon as possible so they could charge me anything and that I wouldn't even look at the screen. I wanted to contact the salon directly (the owner) but don't see a way to do so on their website. I have been going to Shapes for 3+ years and have always been happy. I always get my hair colored, with highlights a few times a year and straightening usually 2x.year. I go, without fail, every 4-6 weeks. I am always on time, have never cancelled, rescheduled or not shown up for appointment. A pet peeve I have is when I kept waiting without a heads up for the delay, an acknowledgment of the delay or an apology for the delay. All that is to say, I believe that I deserve a level of respect, including respect for my time. Today I had a 9 am appointment. My stylist (Pegah) was a few minutes late, which was fine. She took me to the back, to the color bar, for my color. She finished and said she'd be back in a bit to check on me. 53 minutes later (at 10:15) with no one so much as acknowledging my presence, she came by to introduce me to the person who would shampoo my hair. The shampoo took about 15 minutes, so at 10:30 I was finished and told I could sit in another chair while I waited for Pegah to finish with the person who was in her chair. I understand that there will always be appointments scheduled in between my appointments, when I have processing time. I would not expect an appointment to be scheduled that would take so long that I would be kept waiting and waiting, especially without a heads up or an apology, or even for someone to come by and ask how I was doing. Pegah gave me no notice that her in-between appointment would take longer than usual and I would have to wait. I have other things to do today and sitting in a salon being ignored is not one of them. I likely overreacted but rather than sit and wait I left, with wet hair. Pegah did finally apologize when I said I was leaving, but it was too little too late. She also offered to get someone else to blow dry my hair, which I appreciate, but again, it was too little too late. I was in the salon for 90 minutes and she spent 20 minutes total with me. Another 15 minutes I was getting shampooed. That means I was left sitting by myself for 55 minutes, and had I stayed that number would be higher. I still gave Pegah a 50% tip and I didn't even get the my full appointment! I always schedule my next appointment when I leave an appointment, which I obviously didn't do this time, but I also wasn't asked if I wanted to reschedule. It's very unfortunate that this happened, and it's even more unfortunate that I see no way to contact the owner, rather than post a public review like this. I was happy with Shapes for years and I have always tried to be respectful of the staff. I wish that the staff felt the same way about me. Today they failed. read more

I live near this salon, and decided after thinking about it many times, I would give it a try. Initially, I was impressed. The aesthetics of the salon were very nice, and I was greeted with professionalism as soon as I walked in. I went in for an eyebrow waxing this weekend, and explained to the stylist that I just wanted a "clean up" (ie. keep the same brow shape, but clean up the extra hairs). Unfortunately, I didn't realize until I got to my car (the lighting is better there), that she had completely changed the shape of my brows in such a way that was very unflattering:(. This place is so overrated when it comes to getting a simple brazilian wax. They offer a 'Brazilian Wax' at $65, but not what you think a regular brazilian wax is. This wax only covers the front. If you want the entire waxing, you have to get their 'Rio' at $85. My waxing lady in San Francisco (where overhead is so much higher) charges $50 for everything, and she does a much better job. Shapes also alternated between strip wax and hard wax. I don't know about you, but hard wax hurts! The only good thing was that they sold a 'bump be gone' product (i forget the name) that works pretty well, and gives you a refreshing feeling after you've been waxed. If you are looking to get waxed, you are better off going to Polished in Georgetown. Quick, painless, and clean for only $30. read more

I went here recently since I always drive past it and live in the neighborhood, I thought I would try it out. I called to make an appointment for a massage with aromatherapy and a pedicure and after checking out the website, was told I would get a 25% discount as a new client. The receptionist told me that I would need to bring in the coupon. I told her I was not able to print it out due to no access to a printer before my same day appointment and she told me that wasnt a big deal, as long as I mentioned seeing it, I would get the discount. I walk in, nice place, seems clean. The receptionist greeted me and made me tea. I changed in their changing room and sat on the sofa to fill out paperwork. The door to the outside is literally right next to the sofa, so whenever the door opened, there I was in my robe. I sat and waited for my masseuse. The massage was okay although she didnt realize that I had made an appointment for aromatherapy. It was just okay, nothing spectacular. The pedicure was just okay too, I have gone to cheaper places that do the same job though. What bugged me the most? When I went to pay, the eurotrash at the counter was so snotty and nasty to me. She wouldnt give me the discount and had such an attitude, actually rolling her eyes when I asked like I was some peasant asking for discounts because I cant afford salon services. The manager told her to give it to me and she acted like she was doing me a huge favor. I nearly said to her "um, honey, let's be real, you are just a receptionist, please dont act like I am beneath you" (EDIT apparently someone found this offensive and wrote me a PM saying they felt I was implying that her "job title equated her worth" no, she was acting as if she were the manager, not the receptionist, and was being incredibly rude and belittling to me-hope that clears things up-I am not anti-receptionist) Her attitude, the price for a strip mall spa and the mediocre-just okay but can get it anywhere else its nothing special service is why I am giving two stars. Warning if you pay with a credit card, you cannot tip on it and will have to write separate checks which is annoying as heck, I dont know why salons do that now other than it hurts their bottom line. read more

This "Day Spa" is a nice attempt and well decorated inside to give a relaxing environment, however does not provide the full experience due to the limits of being in a strip mall. The entire spa is off one long hallway that goes straight back toward the back of the building. I had a massage here and the entire time I could hear talking nearby just outside of my massage room. My initial massage was with Tracy, who didn't try to personalize/customize my massage. She didn't ask me about problem areas beforehand, nor did she ask how much pressure I wanted. She did not dim the lights prior to starting, therefore the room was brighter than usual. She proceeded to talk with me during the entire massage, until about 10-15 minutes into it, when I told her I wasn't going to talk anymore so that I could just relax and enjoy the massage. I also asked for the lights to be dimmed. Some of here techniques were not what I would expect for a $100 50-minute massage, such as what I call "karate-chopping" - okay if it's a little $25-30 massage place, but not for this price. Also, during the massage, she sneezed TWICE (covered her mouth both times) and proceeded to continue the massage WITHOUT washing her hands or using antiseptic cleanser. When I checked out and was asked how the massage was, I told them. Zoey, the manager, really tried to compensate for it. She didn't charge me for the massage with Tracy, and asked me to come back for a massage with one of the other girls. I had my next massage with Jessica, who took the time to talk to me beforehand, find out what I liked and where I needed focus on, and then told me her plan for the massage. She did a great job with the massage and really "felt" my body- spending more time on the places that were tighter. Her techniques were well worth the money spent. However, again, I could hear talking the entire time due to the layout of the place. Eventually, I began to tune it out as I really relaxed half-way through my massage, but it was still there the entire time. I think this layout just doesn't serve well for a day spa. Perhaps some small touches to drown out the background noise would help? Maybe some relaxation water fountains? Better insulation around the doors? Move the "break room" out to the salon area, where talking at normal voice levels is not a big deal? Otherwise, if I were spending my own money, I would go elsewhere, but I had been given a gift certificate to go there for Christmas. read more

Horrible service, horrible price. I went in for my 6:00 appt to get my chest and back waxed for the first time. It says come in 30 min early to get into a robe and all. I get there at 5.45. I am waiting in the back, which is nice looking, until 6:25! They say if your late, u get charged for the hour of service, but what if there late, you should get PAID for that hour they wasted. Deff not what I expected from a nice salon. I go to to Cindy to get my service, and she is HORRIBLE. i have red marks on my skin from where the cold wax was, and spots with internal bruising. She continually pulled in the wrong direction or didn't tug hard enough and get stuck half way. While she messes up she would say opps and sorry but this is no excuses. Then she tells me she had never waxed chest before. WOW really!, why didnt you mention this to me earlier, id never come to this place. The waxing was very painful and not done right at all. I had sticky spots left from wax on my arm, where there was no waxing done at all. There were also places where she would wax in every direction. Not professional at all. The price tag...$160. I noticed that no one had written a review of this place in over a year, so I thought I would write a quick update. I went back to the salon this past Saturday for a massage and was not disappointed. To be honest, the reason I went back was that they were running a 40% off sale on all services, since they had a lot of cancellations due to the snow storm we had. I figured at that rate, it was worth giving this place a try. Esther, the woman who gave me my massage, was great. She took care of my trouble spots and listened to me throughout the massage when I asked her things or asked her to change her technique. The salon has the dark, mood lighting you would expect of a spa. I think the only thing that I wasn't over the moon with is that they only have one changing area, which is where all the lockers are as well. So if someone gets in there before you, you'll be waiting a few minutes to leave. read more

Here's a more current review for Shapes. While I haven't come here for massages or haircuts, this is my go-to place for brows. I've been going here for almost a year and have never been disappointed. I'll admit that I don't really take care of my brows as much as I probably should, but Regina is the BEST. She gets 'em fixed up amazingly. She is super chill, sweet, and of course, friendly. She's a great conversationalist and makes you feel right at home when she does your brows. The atmosphere is cool, dark, and calming like a spa should be. The rooms are heated and toasty. And from my experience, you are always walked through your waxing/tweezing process and are told what is going on so you aren't caught off guard. Shapes also offers coupons and special promotions at times, and they even offer a discount to first-time customers! So I recommend that people should avoid the outdated reviews and instead give this place a try. read more

This spa is top notch! My husband and I have been going to this spa for over a year now and we've never been disappointed. We've seen a few hair stylists, but have been seeing Jodie for the past year or so. She is always a pleasure to work with and really takes her time with you. Even when I chopped off 8+ inches of my hair she made me feel good and happy :) My husband's favorite part is the scalp massage before your hair washing. I've also had some spa treatments done there- massage, manicure and makeup application (for my wedding). Still no disappointments there. You feel like you're in a high class spa without the painful price tag. UPDATE: I just went in for a haircut and they've increased their prices again. $60 for a trim seems to be a bit excessive, so I may have to start searching elsewhere. First haircut in 3 months! What a treat to go here! I opted to go here instead of my normal walk-in place because I knew they were taking COVID seriously. They did a health question ahead of time when booking, then when arriving asked again, took temp, lots of social distancing, face masks, and even are sanitizing each pen after use! Went here on the recommendation of a friend. The price was very reasonable for someone who realized she needed to stop going to Supercuts. There wa a mix up with my appointment, but after a short wait and lots of help from the front desk staff, I met Jessica for my cut. I had a vision and she helped it come to life. First, they give you a scalp massage while washing your hair which is amazing. During the cut, she let me know everything she was doing and how it would look when she was done. At the end, she curled it and I looked runway ready. She taught me how to curl so I could recreate the look. It took me many bad haircuts to find Shapes. I phoned and spoke to Zoe. She set me up with the most wonderful hair professional, Jesus. The cut is always exactly what I want and the color is amazing. He is very talented. I set my appointments up in advance. However, Zoe is my 911 personal beauty coordinator. If I can't keep to my schedule, or my daughter pops in from out of town, Zoe magically makes things happen for us. The salon and spa are clean and beautifully decorated. My massage by GiaNina last week was one the best that I have ever had! Being a former natural bodybuilding champion and a current gym rat I need more than a soft massage. GiaNina gave me a combination of sweedish and deep tissue massage. Overpriced. I made an appointment online (it took me three separate tries and no one got back to me. I finally had to call to confirm my appointment) and the price ended up being $100 more than the estimate given! (note: this was after the appointment was over. Don't trust the stylists to inform you of prices when they offer extra things like hair washing, etc) Staff was flippant and unhelpful during the scheduling, and once I got there, they somehow screwed up my appointment details (that I wrote our explicitly online) and rushed me through it because they didn't make enough time for what I asked. They didn't even give me the hair color I asked for, and there was no time to do it again. In the past, I've had better experiences with them, but I guess moving to a new location makes you okay with pissing off your old customers. Sound business strategy right there. read more

My wife was nearly brought to tears today by the manager who called to complain about appointments scheduled for my children. I wasn't privy to his end of the conversation but it was aggressive and rude enough that my wife had a hard time initially understanding the problem. The bottom line seems to be this - my children were scheduled for appointments that he didn't want to honor, appointments that were initiated during face to face conversations with his staff yesterday. Very poor management as is evident by the large turnover of employees. I may not have been a high dollar client but I had been going here for over 12yrs for services of 90min massages, several prenatal massages, my Wedding party styling, haircuts and numerous gift certificate purchases. After moving to a different county I have not been able to go very often in the last few years. Last year I booked a couples massage for my husbands and my 10th Anniversary. As usual we got into our robes and waited in the spa waiting room for our therapists. My husband was brought back to a room while I stayed seated. He looked back at me and I just shrugged my shoulders assuming a therapist would come for me next. Unfortunately that did not happen and after 15min. I went to the front desk on the verge of tears in my ROBE and inquired calmly why I had not been taken back with my husband. Once they realized their mistake they escorted me back to the spa room and said someone would be with me ASAP. Outside the door I could hear them arguing about what to do and who dropped the ball. I ended up getting a massage by myself and 20% off the service and a promise of a complimentary couples massage when we came back next. Even though I felt our anniversary was ruined I accepted the offer and remained pleasant toward the staff as I understand mistakes happen. They seemed truly sorry and I thought a redo was generous of them. Well..I went to book this makeup massage this week and was told via a receptionist since it was over a year (14months) they could not do anything. My husband and I both work and have children so we do not have a lot of free time and this was the first time in months we could get away together. The management did not even have the respect to call me themselves! They made the receptionist break the news to me. As long as they are in business they could have done something about it! My wife is a regular client with one of the stylists here and she told me about the massage area and said I should give it a try. I made my appointment and arrived 10 minutes early as I'm accustomed too for massages, just in case there's some extra paperwork or things are running a bit behind. This place is pretty darn nice though! Nothing like you'd expect from the neighboring shops. I was shown into the changing area and given a locker, then I went out into the relaxation room. Here there were 2 strange things...First, the couch has way too many cushions it was hard to even sit down. There's also a dining area, which seemed kind of out of place. The spa snacks were peanuts, which was a bit strange. I never really eat food that many people can shove their unwashed hands into anyways, so this was not much of an issue, just kind of bizarre. My massage went pretty well. There was a bit of an issue with my therapist not understanding what I was telling her, but I don't have complaints about the service. I'd try it out again. read more

I went to Shapes for the first time yesterday to get a body wrap and a pedicure. The body wrap was OK (I had better wraps in other spa's) however the credit goes to "Miae" who did my pedicure. She is very professional and took good care of my feet and nails and massage was awesome. I've been a client of Shapes for over 11 years now. I usually use the Fairfax location as it is closer to my home, but I have been to the Herndon location as well. I used to get fills for my nails there every two weeks, and a monthly pedicure until my favorite tech moved, and I decided to see if there was somewhere less expensive (there were many). I still went to Shapes for massages and waxing and have been pleased with all of my services. When I was pregnant with both of my kids, I really enjoyed the prenatal massages! I have been getting my hair done at the Fairfax location for around 11 years as well. I've had very good luck with stylists. My favorite stylist is no longer there due to a family issue, si I am going to try Ting, as I've heard great things about her. She also does colored hair extensions, which my Elementary aged daughter loved last summer, when we got her a little pink stripe. Both of my kids have seen Diane and I've been really happy with the results. The front desk has been very professional and helpful, and I've not encountered anyone on the staff that I'd avoid. My only negative is that they do seem to get more and more expensive as time goes on. I just can't justify the cost for my nails there, and I'm hoping that their other services don't get so pricey that I have to look elsewhere. It is true that you get what you pay for, but I'd hate to see them price themselves out of what I am willing to pay. read more

I have been a repeat customer ever since, and even drive past several day spas in South Riding to herndon because it's such a perfect, pampering experience. The Swedish Massage + hot stone sampler is to die for, and a bargain at $100ish. The only negative is having to get dressed and drive yourself home, because you'll be as limp as a noodle. read more
