I previously ran a company automating doctor and dentist offices, so I've met more than my fair share of healthcare professionals. This guy deserves his great reputation. He calmly and gently answered our 1000+ questions on diagnosis, process, post-surgery (gum graft), and followup. Best Periodontist in Ventura county! I took my aunt here for a evaluation looking forward to replace her missing molar. First day of the consultation went great! She had her evaluation done and Dr. Shapiro explained throughly from diagnosis to prognosis. He also went over what will happen next in each appointment. Insurance did not take long to respond back. And within days she was back in the office to start her treatment. Treatment day had arrived and she felt comfortable, relaxed, and knew she was in good hands! Overall her appointment went as smooth as it possibly can. Best of all, she received a post op call that same day to check how she was doing. A week after she went in for an appointment to check the healing. Yes dental implants is a process and matter of letting nature do it's thing and let everything heal but it's worth it! My aunt is very satisfied with the outcome :)! *Really clean office, friendly and professional staff. Who wouldn't want to step in an office where they listen, you feel comfortable, and you know they're a caring staff? I highly recommend this office! First of all I am very anxious over any dental procedure so when I was told my tooth needed extraction my anxiety spiked. Getting an implant sounded like a long and arduous experience that I didn't want to experience. BUT Dr Shapiro explained every step and importantly I didn't feel one ounce of pain from Novocain to stitches. His calm soft-spoken confidence is extremely helpful. Dr. Shapiro is the best periodontist in Ventura! He did an outstanding job of treating my problem, taking it quadrant by quadrant with the worst one first. While it wasn't entirely painless, Dr. Shapiro did a great job of minimizing my discomfort. His office staff are also excellent-kind, caring and efficient. I went to Dr Shapiro after i moved to Ventura for follow up care for periodontal disease. in the 4+ years i went to him, not one xray was taken nor was any additional services suggested - i only had routine cleanings. The hygienist is great. I would go to Sue any day. However i cannot say the same for the Dr. he would check on my teeth every time, measured my pockets occasionally. I recently relocated and went to a new Dentist and had xrays done. Much to my surprise, i had heavy plaque under my gums again, they said it was years of growth, and deep pockets. Apparently now I need to go through full root planing and scaling again and it will be painful. I had done them previously without any numbing at my prior periodontist before Dr Shapiro. I called the office and the person who answered the phone Pam was useless. How can this Dr say he cares about his patients? This was a costly and painful experience. Dr. Shapiro is great, during the pre-op he explained to me what he would be doing the day of the periodontal surgery and post-surgery care. During the surgery he was very gentle and informed me of each step. His assistant Alba, was helpful and attentive. Also, I received a follow up phone call in the evening of surgery. I had a gum graft done by Dr. Shapiro a couple years ago which healed very quickly, and the color blended perfectly with my other gums. Today it still looks so good you can't tell at all where I had the procedure. Cost will vary but the price contracted with my insurance company for my mid-level plan was very affordable. As for the procedure itself: Dr. Shapiro was very patient with me and answered my flurry of questions in comprehensive detail at the consultation. He explained every step of the process during the graft and made sure I was as comfortable as possible, and his office even called me that evening to check on me. I'm unfortunately having to go back in now for a graft in a different spot. The receptionist spent a long time on the phone with me talking through my options and accommodating my schedule to book my appointment. I'm very grateful to them for making a normally very unpleasant process as good as it can be and have much less anxiety about this as a result. I feel so much more confident about my oral health (and my smile) thanks to Dr. Shapiro! read more

I saw Dr. Shapiro in early February 2018 for a pre determination on an infected implant. My dentist had determined it could not be saved and Dr. Shapiro agreed. The office said it would take three to four weeks for the authorization from my insurance. After no communication for four weeks I called the office beginning March. They said to be patient. I called middle of March, they repeated be patient. I called again on 3/30/18 and the agent told me it had 'slipped through the crack' but that she would call me in two weeks. Finally I checked with the insurance company to find that they had been billed for the implant extraction $2389.00 that was done on March 28 2018. I did not have an appt. with Shapiro that day and the extraction was not done. This is fraud and really poor customer service as I have bee delayed 3 months getting my infected implant removed. read more

Dr. Shapiro and his staff are among the best medical practitioners I have ever encountered. I am writing this review on behalf of my wife, Luisa, who recently (8/11/16) had surgery performed by Dr. Shapiro. My wife and I both agree we would recommend Dr. Shapiro to our friends and family in a heartbeat! Background: Luisa has a history of dental issues. More specifically, as long as I've know her, she has worn a removable prosthetic bridge with two fake teeth on her upper right jaw. Our dentist recently diagnosed an infection in the bone above the tooth next to her two missing teeth. The infection was in the jawbone above a tooth (#12 tooth) that had previously had a root canal and crown on it. Our dentist had suggested that we extract this number 12 tooth and build a new prosthetic denture (to add a 3rd fake tooth). We were referred to Dr. Shapiro to get a second opinion consult in the search for a best solution. During our consultation visit with Dr. Shapiro, we liked his suggested, more permanent solution as follows. We would still extract the damaged number 12 tooth and clean out the infection. Then, insert 2 implants into the area of the now 3 missing teeth, and then install a permanent 3-tooth crowned bridge onto the two implant posts! Surgery: On the day of the surgery (8/11/16), my wife was quite nervous about having this periodontal implant surgery; very natural pre-op anxiety. But when we arrived at Dr. Shapiro's office, the people there (Tracy the office manager, Alba the surgical assistant, and of course, Dr. Shapiro) were very warm, kind, and compassionate. With their reassuring demeanor, I saw my wife's anxiety melt away even before entering the treatment room. I was allowed to join them in the treatment room during the surgical procedures as well. From the moment my wife received her first shot of Novocaine, she NEVER felt even the slightest amount of pain or discomfort. As I listened to Dr. Shapiro's kind words guiding her though the procedure, I was extremely impressed with his level of compassion and also his technical skill/expertise. As I watched him working, he kept explaining every step of the procedure to my wife, and kept asking her how she was doing throughout the entire procedure. I consistently watched my wife give him the "thumbs up" in response to each of the Doctor's inquiries! When the surgery was complete (tooth extracted, two implants inserted, bone graphing tissue in place, internal sinus lift as well), my wife had no pain whatsoever!...but she was still completely numb. Dr. Shapiro gave us simple, straightforward instructions to let us know what to expect for the rest of the day, and for the upcoming days to follow. My wife took 3 Advils (Ibuprofen) when we got home (she was still numb). Hours later, as the Novocaine wore off, she took a half of a pain pill (prescribed by the Doctor) and fell asleep in the late afternoon/early evening. She woke up around midnight, no significant pain, took a few more Advil, and went back to sleep. *** BTW, the Doctor called us on my cell phone in the late afternoon just to check up on Luisa's status...I was amazed that a Doctor actually called us at home...now I want all my doctors to call me at home to check on my status; what a concept!!! In the days that followed, Luisa never really experienced any pain at all! Since the surgery, she has still taken Advil as directed by Dr. Shapiro, but she has not needed any of the prescription pain pills at all...amazing. Now, my wife needs to wait about 4 months to allow the bone to "fuse" with the implants. Then, back to our regular dentist to build the permanent restoration crowns. Soon, Luisa will never again have to hassle with her removable prosthetic, she is so happy about her more permanent solution thanks to Dr. Shapiro's insight and expertise. Dr. Shapiro was great!! I had to have a couple of gum grafts, and they both went really smoothly, and relatively painlessly. He thoroughly explained the procedure - what he was doing, what to expect, how time-sensitive it was to get this done,etc. The procedure was relatively painless after the shot, and he stitched it up nicely so that it didn't bleed at all afterwards. My mouth was only in pain afterwards for about a day, though it was a little sore for a week. He was very careful, and had me come in for a couple of follow up appointments to make sure everything was healing nicely - which they were. I had a really bad experience with my wisdom teeth extraction a couple years before with a different doctor, but this was infinitely better - I was so grateful for that. It was really easy to get appointment with him - they had a spot open the very next week after I called. Also, he and his staff member Tracee were both so friendly and personable throughout that what could have been a very disagreeable experience quite pleasant. Also, added plus, the office has plenty of easy parking, and the operating rooms have big windows with a lovely view. I would definitely recommend him to anyone in need of this kind of procedure!!! read more

I am enormously impressed with Dr. Nathan Shapiro. I had been told by several dentists and two periodontists over the past few years that my gums had recessed so badly that I needed gum graft surgery. The more I learned about the procedure the more I tried to convince myself that I didn't really need it. It just seemed pretty horrific especially since I needed the gums around 8 of my teeth done! My gums got progressively worse and I finally gave in and decided to research several of the periodontists recommended to me. I was very impressed with Dr. Shapiro's high level of training and experience so I set up an appointment. When I told him I was mortified of having skin and flesh taken from the roof of my mouth he told me about donor tissue (no one else had) and I said "I'm in"! I had the surgery a week ago. Dr. Shapiro is an extremely good surgeon. He is gentle and works with care and precision and I was amazed at how perfect the graft looked. I was more amazed with the lack of discomfort during the procedure even though my gums were being cut and sewn. (Sorry for being so graphic but if this is the procedure you need, you don't need to be worried about it as I was.) After the novacain wore off I did take 2 prescription pain pills but after that I only needed Advil for a couple of days. I never felt bad pain just some soreness that the Advil took care of. Now a week later I had a follow up appointment today and everything looks great and is healing perfectly! I do credit Dr Shapiro for this. I rarely ever write reviews but if you need a good periodontist I highly recommend Dr Shapiro. read more
