Tried a couple cake slices and found them to be not dry. The chocolate cake was okay (nothing to special), but the carrot cake was a bit too oily and not as spiced as I prefer. My son and I visited before the Billy Joel / Sting concert. We were able to get parking there as well. Bonus! Shapiro's Deli has a cafeteria feel with plenty of seating and a carry out area for those that want to order and go. I forgot to take pics of our dinners but I had the burger on an egg bun and a side of mac and cheese and deviled eggs. My son got the meatloaf entree that came with 2 sides and bread. We also split a slice of strawberry cheesecake. There was so much food that we couldn't finish it, not that we didn't try. All was great except for the mac and cheese, it was a bit runny. That didn't stop my son from finishing the mac and cheese he got tho. lol. I did get pics of the people waiting in line. The line got sooooo much longer after we entered it, which goes to show that Shapiros is worth the wait. We all could've gone elsewhere and chose to not. We came here before a Colts game. The line was long but it moved very quickly. I thought the place would be more packed, but it's very spacious inside, and despite the crowd, there was plenty of tables available. The staff was very kind and kudos to them for being able to hand pregaming so perfectly. I ordered a pastrami on rye. It came your usual pickles and that's about it. The pastrami was really delicious and you get this fat sandwich, but it's definitely on the pricier side. A small side would have been to go along with the sandwich would have been perfect, but overall a very satisfying meal. read more

Ordered Key Lime pie and a Rueben for a friend's birthday. Walk in to pick it up. I ask only one bag? I'm wondering because why would you put cold and hot in the same bag? Food is fresh but service is not great. The lady that is always taking orders has made me mad every time I come. This time she nagged an old lady in front of me and then took a rude start to asking me what I want. This time I didn't want to deal with it, I blatantly just said give me a roast beef sandwich. I got a corn beef, of course on rye shared it with two other people, it was huge, but a little dry. We also got a stuffed cabbage that was probably one of the best stuffed cabbages I've had. Not what I pictured when I was told to stop by an authentic Jewish deli. The place was huge, it reminded me more of a cafeteria. You go through a line and grab stuff as you make your way up to the cashier. I had to have a piece of lemon poppyseed cake, as it is one of my favorites. Then I got a back of chips as a side and my sandwich which consisted of only salami and Muenster cheese. I wish the sandwich was half the size it was, because there is no way I could have finished it. Otherwise, it was fine. It was just a huge sandwich. The cake was fine, but I wouldn't say it was the best cake I've ever had. The icing was super rich and had an almost doughy flavor that was unpleasant. The cake was good, but not the sweetest so you needed some of the icing to get the sweet from. My friend actually paid, but I saw the total as it came up and nearly fainted. It has a cafeteria-style restaurant serving all sorts of Eastern European classics, like cabbage rolls, brisket, latkes, soups, and salads. The line moves fast and the service is speedy and friendly. I keep thinking about the massive sandwiches, delicious bagels, corned beef and other deli meats, rye bread, and indulgent pastries. The space is quite large with lots of seating. A few days later, we occupied a table of 7 in a corner of the cavernous dining room. This Indiana landmark met everyone's expectations. Of course we've all heard of Shapiro's at some point, if you live around Indy, but it took me way too long to actually make the stop. I need to stop making that mistake because this pastrami was excellent! The deli was the perfect spot for our little Christmas get together with plenty of long tables, an easy cafeteria style ordering line, and a large range of goods including some EPIC desserts. I have to admit I was a little shocked when the Boston Pastramis were $20 each, without any sides or drinks included. But for a special occasion... Rye bread was delicious. SO disappointing that the Challah loaf did not measure up. This loaf was airy and bland and rubbery. I compare it to the Challah loaf that I regularly purchase from Trader Joe's which is dense and eggy and has a slight hint of sweetness Wonder if the recipe was modified to increase profits? Shapiro's represents what's best about Indy. It's the place local folks take friends, relatives and clients from out of town. It's a way to show off discreetly. Yes, the prices have gone up over the years, but the quality and enormous portions have remained exactly the same. I'm certain that everyone has their favorites. My wife loves the tender beef brisket sandwich with Swiss cheese accompanied with the chicken noodle soup. I find it difficult not to order the cabbage roll. The two sides I choose do vary from visit to visit. This time I had the roasted red potatoes and buttered noodles. Although the many desserts are very tempting we wait and get sweets from the counter to take home.
