Turkey sandwich with all the good trimmings
Niesha N.

Shapiro's is always a classic Indy stop, and this visit reminded me why. I'm mostly pollo-pescatarian, so I built a loaded turkey "Reuben" style sandwich and it was incredible. The roasted turkey was flavorful and stacked high, the grilled onions and sauerkraut added the perfect balance, and the rye bread held everything together beautifully. The potato pancake was crispy and comforting, and the pickles here deserve their own shout-out. Seriously heavenly. Dessert did not disappoint either. Ann's strawberry cheesecake was rich and delicious, and the Mexican wedding cookies were the perfect little sweet bite to finish everything off. The deli case is packed with great options, service at carry-out was smooth, and the food quality is exactly what you expect from a long-time Indianapolis staple. Definitely worth stopping in when you're downtown.

3.20.3l26. Shapiro's has been around forever and is famous for its generously piled meat sandwiches. It's been a while since I've been to their downtown location, so it was nice to go again. Every single worker down the cafeteria line is super friendly. The hubs and I split a brisket sandwich, with a side of (hot) German potatoes. I got a diet coke, and he had a slice of German chocolate cake. That came to $40. (!) The potatoes were delicious. Yes, the sandwiches are piled high, but it does feel pricy. The homemade bread is super tasty, but it can't really support that much meat. So it's a nice experience, but just not something I'm going to rave about. #yum #ReviewsByRL

GREAT PASTRAMI SANDWICH IN INDY =============================== My husband and I visited twice in the first week of August so I think you can say we liked it. The first time we dined in and the line was very long. It's cafeteria style so the only way to avoid a line is to call in your "To Go" order. We called in our order the second time and it was so much faster. We got a sandwich for my son the second time and he really liked it. We will definitely visit again when visiting Indy.

IDK, everybody seems to love it here. I am not really sure why. I would consider the food to be OK, but that's about it. Maybe it's the volume. The serving sizes are fairly big. Then again the prices sure have increased tremendously also and so it's not really a great bargain anymore. Add to that the rudeness of the staff and the dungy surroundings and I have to say it's not my cup of tea. I'd still go if someone else is paying, but that's about it for me. Maybe if I lived closer and just needed something quick, or maybe I just haven't found THE menu item to convince me yet.

Honestly not a bad roast beef sandwich. It was close to $25 (just for the sandwich) but I will say it was a pretty big sandwich. I'm not a HUGE roast beef fan, so not sure if I'll go. Nice group of people working there and just gave "local restaurant" vibes.

Corned Beef/Pastrami Sandwich on Rye Bread Matzo Ball Soup Mac and Cheese

First time in Indy, did some research on where to eat and everyone said this was the spot. Boy did it not disappoint! Growing up around the Tri-State area, we know our fair share of Jewish Delis. Got a Pastrami and Corned Beef with Swiss on Rye. The bread was SOOO GOOD! Mac and Cheese was kind of sweet, definitely an interesting take on the classic. Also picked up some bagels and Black and White Cookies. Bagels are nice and soft, probably the best I've had outside of NY.

The place is huge! Not what i was expecting when I was told I had to stop by. I'm used to delicatessens that are small and intimate. There is an area where you can order your meat by the pound. Another area where you can order pies and desserts. And the deli counter where you can get any kind of deli sandwich that you can think of, and a lot of hot entrees also. Since I've been told they were famous for their corned beef sandwich that's what I got. It came as 8 oz of lean corned beef on a couple of good size pieces of bread with pickles on the side. The Corned Beef was very tasty. It was a little leaner than I normally like it but that's not really a complaint, just an observation. The dill pickles were outstanding! Not sure when I'll get back to Indianapolis again, but when I do this will definitely be on the list of places to eat.

Pastrami Sandwich - $23

For a $20 Reuben sandwich, this place is totally worth it. The sandwich is big enough to share with someone, so it's a great deal if you and a friend are craving one. I highly recommend it! I also got the chicken noodle soup, which was a bit disappointing, and the potato salad was just okay. Honestly, I would have been perfectly happy with just the sandwich and a bag of chips. There's plenty of seating and natural lighting, but it can get pretty busy during lunch, so be prepared for that. I really appreciated the huge parking lot, though--it made things super easy.

Love coming to Shapiro's usually but today's experience wasn't what I am used to as far as interaction with employees. Flight landed today dropped luggage off at hotel and took Taxi to Shapiro's. Picked up two loaves of bread to take home back to DC. while picking up lunch. Saw the sign noting daily specials so I asked for fried chicken but the lady behind the counter in a not so nice way said that's a SATURDAY SPECIAL.... and kept saying it while people behind me at looking at our show. Explained to her the font was too small for me to see any other notations than Daily Specials. All of the years of coming to this place and every trade show that our large group attends and ordered only from Shapiro has been pleasant until this lady and her attitude.

Pastrami on egg roll
Plenty F.

3 stars. The pastrami sandwich is fantastic! The egg roll is soft & fresh. Everything about this combo was great... except the price! At nearly $30 for a sandwich, I would expect it to be earth-shatteringly delicious. Spoiler alert: it's good but not THAT good. Someone told me the cheesecake was the best in the city. I'm not sure what city they were speaking of because I tried it and was really disappointed. At $10 a slice, I wouldn't agree. The cheesecake wasn't even set. It's was soft and mushy. Very unappealing. My son had the roast beef and Mac & cheese. The roast beef looked gray and the Mac was runny and sweet tasting. I think it is one of the top three worst Mac n cheeses I've ever tasted. Whatever you do, don't try it! Service is good here. I went through the line and I also go a to-go order. Everyone was friendly and accommodating. I'm looking forward to going back one morning for an egg or everything bagel. They are about $2/each or $8/half dozen. And I'm wanting to try the breakfast on the weekend. It's popular and will runout.

Deviled egg was loaded with paprika. It was great.

It's a massive restaurant and "cafeteria" style so you take whatever food you want as you shuffle sideways toward the register. Interestingly, the first offerings are all desserts. What do they say about life being short so eat dessert first? We tried the Reuben, a smoked turkey sandwich, a deviled egg, and potato pancakes. The Reuben is absolutely massive and delicious. Ten big stars for the Reuben. It's messy but fantastic. The meat is tender and delicious. The bread is very fresh. This is, indeed, a great sandwich. The smoked turkey sandwich is also massive but if this was the "smoked" turkey (versus the roasted turkey), then this turkey quit smoking 20 years ago. The meat still tasted very fresh but I was a disappointed that there was no discernible smoky flavor. The deviled egg, loaded with paprika, was very good. If you like deviled eggs, try this one. The potato pancakes were as dense as a brick and were awful. If it had been colder outside, I could have used them as hockey pucks. After one bite, I was done. They should be embarrassed to serve these things. I have personally made potato pancakes a thousand times and they need to be cooked to order and eaten right away. If you cannot do that, do not serve them. The workers are a little on the gruff side but boy are they efficient. You give them your sandwich order, including the type of meat, bread, any cheese, mustard, etc., and, bang, you get your sandwich very quickly. The Reuben takes a little longer to make. I so wanted to give them 5 stars but there was some room for improvement. I would, however, happily return for that Reuben. Plenty of free parking in their own designated lot next door.

I don't get to eat at Shapiro's often, but when I do I get STUFFED!! The sandwich portions are piled high and full of flavor! I've only been on my lunch hour and the get packed. I haven't tried very much of the menu but I can tell you the Pastrami sandwich is ! DELICIOUS!! The store itself is basic, cafeteria style and bland. I always enjoy my lunch stops at Shapiro's!!

Closest thing to Katz delicatessen in New York I've found! Ambiance is like cafeteria style. Food is excellent with so many great choices. If you are out for a phenomenal home cooked meal than look no further you have found it! The pastrami and Dr. browns black cherry soda is a must!

Yummy but overpriced. I like the options and the food is pretty good for what it is, but it costs way too much.

Both are on the expensive side, however the price is commiserate with the quality. Fluffy, perfectly risen, and the flavor is throughout, not just on top like the flavored rolls at other stores. I recommend ordering ahead for a quick in/out and to make sure what you want is in stock. I've seen the line quite long, but you can get lucky with no line on a weekday. The inside is cute but there is no seating inside. You're going to get a little messy eating your cinnamon roll and want to be in the privacy of your own home anyway. My one very minor piece of feedback is I wish some rolls were sweet rolls (i.e. skip the cinnamon). Fruity Pebble is a little overpowered by cinnamon but I'd still get it. Cookie Monster is the #1 flavor for me and I can't wait to catch Pineapple Upsidedown in stock.

Yes, these are quite a bit pricer that's for sure. People were buying one of everything in line. I was like wow! Some Items the combinations of flavors didn't appeal to me. I love tiramisu and pecan pie so I got them both. One suggestion I would have is to have utensils and napkins at the table for people to use. The pastries I bought are really temperature sensitive and need to be kept cold. Both had a cream - mousse inside. They wouldn't last long only a day or to the next. I loved the pecan item I ordered. It was great! The tiramisu one I wouldn't order again. The bottom flakey part was so bitter. I love coffee and expresso and tiramisu. But, the whole thing just wasn't what I thought it would taste like. Now I know. :-( Creamy, sweet, smooth, with a kick of coffee all come together to make a great tiramisu. This is what most people love about it. I don't know if they are planning on opening a store or not. The pop ups are doing well it seems. I will try other items whenever I can get to one of the pop ups.

What went from ordering 1 pastry each turned into 8 total.. and we regret nothing. The Tiramisu Danish was exactly as I had hoped for! The bitter taste of espresso paired with the sweet mascarpone cream filling reminded me of the holidays when I would watch my mom make tiramisu for our family. While a lot of people prefer a sweeter espresso, I thought this was perfect and very true to a traditional tiramisu taste The Pear Kouglof reminded me of a fresh yeast donut that's been tossed in sugar This was a very kid-friendly pastry in taste and while I wasn't too blown away by it, it did make me wonder if I would have preferred it with a stronger, more potent, fruit. The Cherry Basque Cheesecake -- this pastry was the house favorite. The texture of this cheesecake was creamy, but somehow still spongey.. cakey, but more like pudding. Mix that with the juiciest sour cherries and the crunch of a biscoff crust.. mind blown was an understatement. We're looking forward to what Beurre Sec has planned for their next pop-up

We arrived and I was immediately impressed, visually, by the beautiful atmosphere that they've curated. Through the glass garage door storefront, you are greeted by interesting light fixtures, eye- catching red chairs, large booths, rotating digital images of the delectable chocolate offerings, and flowing fountains of white, milk and dark chocolate. We entered and the smell of sweet confections filled the air. I left my husband at the counter to order and grabbed a table for us in the corner nearest to the garage door. We later discussed how, during the Summer, it will be so nice if/when they open that door up to the outside air. You order at the counter, and then they bring it out to your table. My husband returned with a big glass bottle of cold water (and some of the flimsiest plastic cups that I've ever held). The water was a nice, and necessary, touch. The dishes are rich! They are rich in the best way possible, though. The event provided a complimentary crepe with your choice of fruit, and a cookie skillet with ice cream. My husband couldn't decide on which fruit(s) to get, so the employee just told him that they'd hook it up for us. The crepe came out, and it was so beautiful...it was almost too pretty to eat! They provided us with an array of fruit to accompany it; bananas, strawberries, pineapples, and kiwi. The addition of the fruit really helped to cut through the richness of the chocolate. The crepe was the perfect, delicate vehicle for all of it! I probably ate about a 1/3 of it, and tried so save room for the cookie. I'm not a real "sweets" eater, but everything here just looks so good! The cookie skillet came out warm, gooey, and with its own generous drizzling of chocolate under a scoop of ice cream (& whipped cream if my memory serves me correctly). The cookie by itself was really delicious. In the future, I will omit the addition of chocolate sauce. It really didn't need it. I look forward to another fun dessert date with my hubby at this really SWEET lounge! P.S. All of the portion sizes that I saw were shareable. Bae and I could've shared either one of those desserts and been good. I also saw a woman sharing a sweet treat with her two children, and several other patrons were sharing.
