This is a difficult review to write because this place had previously become one of the main places we would visit when in Indianapolis. Let's start with some of the details. Sauce on the side has a great setup, you walk in and order your chosen food and possibly a beer or soda and then take your number. They have some suggested calzones, but you can also put your own together from a nice selection of ingredients. I also find that they have a pretty good selection of local beers. We will get to the food soon, but first I have some notes about service. The cashier at this location when I visited appeared as though she wished she could be anywhere but work. She looked and sounded as though she was mad at me while I placed my order, and another employee who was taking an order next to her actually had to step in and do part of her job. I wasn't the only one who experienced this attitude either (which was a bit nice because I didn't want to take it personally) I heard several customers talking about it after I was seated. It's a shame, because the other employees were doing their job perfectly, but this cashiers attitude was throwing off the vibe for everyone. After I ordered I saw her vaping outside, so maybe she just needed a break. Okay, that's out of the way - so let's move onto more positive things. I got the Magic Carpet Ride calzone, a mushroom focused calzone that comes with a buttery dipping sauce. This was a delightful experience. The calzone bread is nice and fluffy, and the plethora of mushrooms were meaty and flavorful. I didn't care for the buttery sauce, but that's likely a personal preference so I won't hold it against them. The three stars is primarily employee based, and I'll click back to this review when I visit Indy next year and give Sauce on the side again. Looking for dinner before the Fever game and Sauce on the Side was a great choice. It is right across Pennsylvania Street from Gainbridge Fieldhouse. We arrived at 5:30pm and it was pretty busy. I ordered the Magic Carpet Ride (Crimini, Button, Portabella & Shiitake Mushrooms, Roasted Garlic Puree, Parmesan, Mozzarella, Ricotta, Garlic Honey Oil with Garlic Butter dipping sauce) for $11.59 at the counter. They give you a table marker and an employee brings your food out to you. It came out hot and fresh. I could not taste the difference in all of the mushrooms. The garlic butter dip reminded me of a garlic aïoli not a butter. The size of the calzone was large and more than I could eat in one seating. And since I was heading to the game I threw away about half. There is a lot of seating. Nothing special about the space. White walls and basic tables and chairs. First off, this place was right outside our hotel lobby! Quick walk for lunch. Right across from Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Calzones are very large, 10" pizza [basically] folded in half. The coolest part about this experience for me was the Craft Soda fountain!!! I tasted several different flavors but settle on the Original Ski(Lemon/Orange combo) it kind of resembled Mt. Dew in look and taste. Holy flavor explosion in your mouth! The "Duke" WAS amazing! The dipping sauce was a combo of ranch and BBQ sauce of some type, totally gave it that extra punch of flavor! Sauce is a national chain and if you've ever been to one you know they do a good job of keeping the quality consistently good. More specific to this location the workers are super friendly and helpful and of course the food is good. They have an epic location right across the street from the gainbridge fieldhouse, making it an excellent place to grab a bite before a pacers game or concert and not have to worry about being late. Portions are huge so i recommend splitting with someone and kicking back and enjoying the big window views of the comings and goings at the arena. read more

These calzones are to die for. I first tried them in St Louis, so I was ecstatic to find out there was an Indy location. The meet me in st louis is delicious, plus you can get Ski soda on tap. We enjoyed both, but agreed the fontina cheese of the Carmen pushed it to the top spot. The next day we wanted to try more offerings and got a Fatty B and a meet me in St Louie. Again, both were excellent. After our 4 calzones we ranked 1 - Carmen 2 - Fatty B 3 - Meet me in St Louie 4 - Roasty Toasty On top of our calzone delight, the soft drinks are also out of this world. I have been here a couple of times now, and I will continue to return. Ordering at the counter is fine by me - the workers are friendly, and they bring your food to your table and clear it for you. Food is served on real plates, and there is a nice supply of real, reusable silverware and napkins awaiting guests on every table. LOVE that. Plus, carryout containers are biodegradable! It's a cool, casual atmosphere, with large windows, great for natural lighting (and watching people across the street at the fieldhouse). I have never sit down at sauce on the side. I always get a carry out. It's always ready in a very timely manner within 10 minutes typically. The place is always clean, and there seems to be several people that get carry~out. If bacon is your thing than the Figgy Piggy is a must! The crust melts in your mouth, and the Parmesan on the outside is perfectly crisped! Yum! My second favorite calzone is FATTY B! Pepperoni and meatballs-what?!?! it's so delicious. Don't let the ricotta in it turn you off. You don't even taste the ricotta, and it just elevates the cheese. Since they're downtown, I figured that lunch was their busiest time and that the evenings may not be too bad. I was right about the evening part.. I was one of two tables there for my dinner. For some that might not know this chain is from St. Louis. They make great calzones!!! They use Provel cheese that is famous in St. Louis and is used on a lot of their pizzas out there. This location is located right across from Banker's Life Fieldhouse. It's huge inside!!! Lots of tables and seating and tv's to watch. I like how if you order they pack up your calzone in a nice box with the sauces you choose and off you go. Easy and portable. It takes about 10 - 15 mins when you order for them to be ready. But, it's worth it. They're very good! They use Excel Bottling Company a mom and pop shop from Illinois that uses real cane sugar for their fountain drinks. The red cream soda is my personal favorite. They have lots of options as far as calzone's. They also offer bite sized starters, salads - the smokehouse looks good, desserts, and offer beer and wine. They have two locations in Indiana Carmel and downtown. I hope they add more around central Indiana. read more

Whenever I see a restaurant that sells calzones, I can't help but think of Ben Wyatt (Adam Scott) from the TV show Parks and Rec. Well folks, Ben Wyatt would love Sauce on the Side. This has been on my list of places to try for quite a while, but I'm not going to lie, I don't often have a craving for calzones. After some mental deliberation, I ordered the 'Duke' which has bbq chicken, bacon, corn salsa, smoked cheddar, mozzarella and chili oil. It also comes with bbq ranch 'on the side'. The inside is very spacious, so I had no trouble picking out a table. They have TV's that kept me entertained while waiting for the calzone to be cooked. And after about 10 minutes, the calzone was brought to my table. It was cooked just right, and it had really good flavor. I also really liked the bbq ranch sauce that came with it. Drunk dudes slapping my car as they walked by, then cars wanting to pull into the alley. I pulled forward and yanked my car over...it took them a long time to bring it out (maybe not that long but when you're stressed with angry people around you, it's forever). Luckily I was halfway down the alley and waved to the employee so I could get my food. There is a paid parking lot behind the hotel (where the restaurant is) and parallel paid spots in the alley and more...but dang I went on a Tuesday at 5pm and the area was packed with no parking. I would not want to try this again... So besides parking, how is the food? It's ok. Now my dining partner loved the veggie calzone and wants to go back again. I got a calzone with pepperoni and added mushroom...the dough was very soft. Which I often like soft pizza crusts but on a calzone the texture was weird - I expected it to be more crisp.
