It really is experience going to Shapiros, like stepping back in time. It's an old school cafeteria style place with hot plate dinners and deli sandwiches....vastly overpriced deli sandwiches. I know quality food isn't cheap, but nearly $20 for a Reuben without a side item is highway robbery in Indianapolis. I had the chicken dinner plate and did really enjoy the latkas I chose as a side, but the chicken was average. They do have a nice selection of pies and cakes. Really amazing historic deli that serves fresh delicious food in very healthy portions. It's a more spacious room than expected. Had heard the sandwich portions were generous but the Turkey sandwich was outrageous... that's not thin sliced bread in my photo it's thick cut sourdough, the meat portion just makes the bread look tiny. Not big fan of cafeteria set up; something about it brought grade school food vibes and scents, however; would not penalize such a historic famous celebrated establishment with less stars for just my own quirky preferences. read more

I am from Detroit so when i found out they had a corn beef restaurant here i jumped on it immediately. I went to their first location years ago in Keystone Crossing and i loved it! The bread was always warm and fresh. The corn beef was sliced really lean and flavorful. The customer service was great. When they closed it I was sad because i assumed that was the only one. Then my girlfriend told me about this Joint when i mentioned i wanted corned beef and had to travel home to get it! Walking in i loved how authentic the place look. It looks like the original location! They had a beautiful bakery of pies, cheesecakes, and other desserts. It was a buffet style but they served. The customer service was really great and check out was pretty smooth as they were getting busy. Corn beef was tasty, wish it would have a been a little leaner. Not sure if its an option but next time i will request it. The corn beef wasn't hot. It was pretty cold. I prefer my corn beef warm but it depends on the restaurant type and style. I am big on breads and how fresh it is... the bread was dry and not warm. We had the mac n cheese, it was runny with no taste (Mac N Cheese was kind if a waste of money). Its really pricey. For two i spent $60. 2 corned beef, two devil eggs, and mac n cheese. I think thats really expensive for a deli sandwich. I started comparing locations and i can remember the keystone location being a lot better than this one. Though it was still tasty but it was a difference in quality to me. My one star rating is based on its pricing, or the cost of the items. They mislead by not posting the price. It's hard to believe they charge 18.85 plus tax for a Sandwich, you get to see the pricing when they ring you up. I will not be going back as the cost isn't worth it for what you get. I wish I could rate higher since this is an Indy staple and has so much history! I just was not blown away by the food. The Rueben was very good and understandable why it's famous for it! The meat was tender and was the star of the show! The cabbage was not great and blame myself for picking that side! I really wanted a cabbage roll but that was another meal and could not buy on its own. The deviled eggs were very bland and to be perfectly honest, heavy on the mustard and I have truly made better at home. Hard to rate service because it's cafeteria style and between the plexiglass and the masks, it made it extremely difficult to understand any of the workers. It is nice they have bussers and you can leave all your trays and plates on the table. I so wish I could have loved it and left a higher rating, but just cannot. It won't discourage me from trying again and hopefully picking better choices. I would definitely lose the plexiglass and masks! I can't believe I've lived in the city for 8 years and am just now getting to shapiros! I've heard tons about it but just have never went until recently a friend suggested that we go. Went in with an open mind, was was very pleasantly surprised! One section is where you can purchase some amazing looking things to take home and eat. If you dine in like I did, you get a tray and load up as you walk down the isle. So many choices! Visually It's all very appealing, and I had to practice some self control when making my way. I ended up getting, a fat deviled egg that was flavorful but not over powering, some mashed potatoes with brown gravy. For the main course I got a New York style Ruben, it was one of the best sandwiches I have ever had in the city. Coleslaw in the middle just really adds to it I think and of course a dill pickle spear to finish off the whole thing. We went and tried this place for lunch today. Great selection of food, desserts all looked delicious, prices were pretty good. A little different then the other Jewish delis I have been to on the East coast but I couldn't wait to try it out. It was a little hard to communicate our order as the man behind the counter had a hard time hearing us thru the plexiglass divider & I couldn't understand him that well, either thru his mask. It's great they have such a huge selection to choose from but I was trying to decide quickly what I wanted & they seemed to get impatient. I just picked an egg sandwich as I felt kind of rushed & didn't want to make anyone wait . The man behind the counter called out my order to a lady that came out from the kitchen and I don't know why but she seemed really mad about having to make an egg sandwich. The guy that took my order said ," she just wants an egg sandwich." The lady mumbled something & rolled her eyes. We got to the register & I asked if there was a drink fountain or is it just what we saw in the cooler by the counter. The lady running the register said that's it just the cooler. Then the girl that was making my sandwich came out and asked what kind of bread did I want. I asked what are my choices? She seemed beyond irritated & I quickly said sour dough please. Cashier lady gets kind of irritated as well if you ask a question . She asked me what I wanted on my egg sandwich. I said just cheese & she asked me , all annoyed, what kind. I tend to freeze up when I feel rushed & have people talk to me in a rude way. It wasn't just me, my husband got the same vibe. I know the line needs to keep moving & I wasn't asking twenty questions. I had never been here before so I didn't know the drill, so to speak. It was like the soup nazi episode on Seinfeld, almost comical. After we paid, the girl that made my sandwich, personality plus, brought it out to me , " here ya go" very curtly & rushed off. The sourdough was kind of stale, eggs were supposed to be over medium but were over easy. I didn't say anything, I was starving so I ate it, it wasn't all that bad, it was only 3.00. My husband got the meatloaf dinner & the latkes. Now that was excellent & the meatloaf with two sides was only 12.99 & latkes were only 0.50. So delicious! We got dessert as well, key lime pie, lemon bar & a creme brûlée bar. They were all good! It's a cafeteria style place, nothing fancy but the food was good with the exception of my egg sandwich. I can make better at home and I'm no cook, but everything else was excellent. Not sure if I want to make the drive all the way back again since the staff acts so irritated with you, even tho the food is worth a trip. It wasn't busy at all and no one was in line behind me yet. We were in Indy suburbs looking for apt for my son's move for a new job. I've been wanting to go here for years. Finally made the effort and did NOT disappoint. We all ordered 3 Rubens and 3 Dr. Browns Cel-Ray Sodas. All came to around $55.00($15.00 per sandwich). Bottom line; it was excellent( for the mid-west). What made it also more flavorful is Rye Bread was Fresh Hand cut and not microwave was used to grill sandwich. Look at the pictures and you be the judge! I went with coworker to this place for a pick up. I have heard a lot of good things about this place especially about their bakery items. I didn't dine or pick up dinner but bought bakery items. Their black Forest cake is divine!! I will definitely buy there again. They have a big sit down inside and all their dine in bakery items are sliced well on a plate and plastic wrapped for protection. Prices are great. To my knowledge they have no outdoor seating. They have a big side of parking because they are located on a busy street. They do pick up and carry on option. I do not know about their menu items because I only bought bakery items. It's such a live affair of mine. My Mother took me here as a young in' and though she can't nor ever will be able to visit again in her lifetime, I still swing by on my way to visit her and pick up a Reuben n rye with mayo and onion. They are huge and she thinks she's been given a piece of gold when she sees the Shapiros bag. My favorite is the Lox & Bagel platter. So. This place slaps. When you're in the mood for yummy savory, catch the flavors at Shapiro's. My go-to has always been their meatloaf with the burnt Mac & cheese, spinach, green beans, red potatoes, latke or German potato salad for the 2 sides. But if you're in a sandwich mood, I cannot recommend the peppered beef enough! Get it with spicy brown mustard and Muenster cheese (this place ain't strict on kosher, it's kosher STYLE). But recently, I woke up too early on my weekend and decided to dip my toe into some nostalgia from my time in NYC as a child in the mid 80s. As a kid from Indy, I'd never heard of bagels before. Once they arrived in the Midwest, I was so happy, but only Shapiro's bagels (and atmosphere) takes me back to the east coast. Definitely get the lox and bagel. They serve it in a dark red glass thinking they can get by without you knowing it, however it taste like water it is so weak. The last Ruben I got was $19.00 & it had so much fat it was horrible. I got in around 2:00 in the afternoon on a Wednesday, and there was a notably older crowd filling nearly half the seats in the large seating area. Decadent desserts are the first thing you'll see in the cafeteria-style line followed by small dishes of outstanding fruit salads, well-prepared veggie salads, and artfully prepared deviled eggs. Any sandwich you could want will be made by staff on the spot with a wide variety of breads, meats, cheeses, and condiments to choose from. I love Shapiro's. I was downtown and I thought there isn't a better sandwich in town, so why let's go! We stopped and had their Reuben. It is a sandwich that is big enough for two! Plenty of corned beef and loaded with sour kraut and thousand islands dressing. I had their potato salad. It is a wonderful tangy mustard based potato salad. We also had a their potato cakes. Fried and delicious. Covid has made some things different, such as they don't have fountain drinks. That doesn't change the quality of the food. If you haven't been to Shapiro's you must go. This historic and much loved Jewish deli has been in the same family for well over a 100 years. They serve all the beloved Jewish deli favorites from corn beef, reubens, pastrami, brisket, Lox and bagels, corn beef hash, potato pancakes/Latke, matzo ball soup, split pea, cabbage borscht soups and baklava plus so, so much more. An amazing selection of phenomenal food. The cornbeef sandwiches are delicious. Matzo Ball soup and potatoes cakes are one of my fave and sugar cream pie, cheesecake and chocolate chocolate cake are family favorites. Be aware the sandwich prices run higher than many restaurants. The sandwiches (corn beef, pastrami) prices run $15 but large enough to share or make two meals out of. Salads, soups, sides and hot entrees are more moderately priced. The restaurant is large with a substantial number of 4-top tables and a terrific location for groups. The dine in cafeteria line can be long but moves quickly. Carryout orders are straight ahead as you enter. The servers were friendly, patient and helpful. Be sure to try dessert or grab carryout. Great location for large groups and to order special occasion cakes and desserts. Stop in and enjoy this fabulous Jewish deli. read more

I'm always hopeful that my dinner companions will get one of them so I can get at least one scrumptious bite!
