My wife and I love this place. It is probably about as far as I am willing to walk from the convention center during Gencon, but it has become a yearly tradition because the dining experience is worth it. This is a throwback-to-the-past, Jewish-style deli serving ridiculously oversized sandwiches and lots of other stuff in a cafeteria-style setting. I don't have much life experience to compare with in terms of old-school delis. In Columbus, we have Katzingers and it is ok, but I prefer Shapiros mostly for the atmosphere. The place is well-lit, the staff are friendly and efficient and keep things moving. The gimmic at Katzingers is the self-serve barrel of whole pickles, but I don't really like their pickles so it isn't a huge draw for me. The pickle slice at Shapiros was perfectly adequate and they gave us and extra one since my wife and I were sharing. No upcharge or hassle for sharing. At Shapiro's, we've had the pastrami on rye w/ swiss and the reuben and preferred the pastrami. The reuben tastes great, but is just too hard to eat with all the added moisture causing structural issues. The sides are always competent but not spectacular. On our recent visit, my wife got an oversized, mostly flavorless deviled egg that she wasn't happy with, but otherwise no specific complaints. We always get desert (because who doesn't want a giant slice of pie or cake) but again it is just competent. The highlight of any meal is the sandwich and I could easily go without the rest and be perfectly satisfied. The "special sauce" with Shapiro's is the open, airy restaurant, the abundance of locals, plenty of seating, and the calm, but still bustling vibe. After 8 years in Indy, I finally made my way to Shapiro's. This Indy staple isn't close to me, so we just hadn't tried to get there until now. We went on a Saturday right around noon, and it wasn't busy at all. The employees were all very pleasant, which made the ordering process pretty easy. Many people had said it was confusing, but I found if you ask questions, it works. My husband ordered the reuben, I got chopped steak. We ordered every potato option as a side (I'm a potato fan). I got a hot pastrami sandwich with sourdough, munster cheese and mustard. Recently moved from the East Coast near NYC and I worked at an Italian deli for a few years before moving here. While this deli is probably the best in Indy I was pretty disappointed at the service. First there was no mustard on the sandwich that I had asked for so I had to use the mustard packets. Secondly the sourdough was falling apart. Lastly I paid $20 for the sandwich, a pickle spear and a cup of water! The hot pastrami was really good and perfectly cooked though. Shapiro's Delicatessen is a classic kosher deli. They bake their own rye bread, which is much lighter than the dense stuff we get in California. They slice their perfect corned beef very thin and then pile it high on two grilled slices of rye with Swiss, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing. It's heavenly, and huge! Shapiro's Deli has been open since 1905! Four generations have run the deli. They cook all of their meats in house and they don't skimp!!!!!! They are not cheap sandwiches but the quality justifies the price!!!! I know the next time I'm in Indianapolis, Shapiro's will be my first stop! read more

There's a lot to be said for a place that makes (and serves) as much food as this place does. I highly recommend looking at a menu online as the ordering is done with military precision. I wanted to ask a question but was a bit intimidated by the ladies taking the orders so just ordered quickly so as not to have my hand slapped by a ruler. When you walk in, you grab a tray and some silverware, and go through the line. First you will pass desserts. You absolutely must have one. It's a rule. (ok, I just made that up but you will not want to bypass these homemade looking beauties.) As you go further down the line, you will see a huge menu board overhead, and tons of meats, breads and sides. When it's your turn, be ready to order or be given the stink eye by the ladies behind the food and everyone behind you. They will then make your food, ask if you would like a (bottled or can) soda, and ring you up. Then you take your food, find a seat, and eat. The sandwiches we had (a corned beef, and a rare roast beef) were delicious. I do wish they sold half sandwiches as these are MASSIVE. But I'm sure that would break up the military precision with which everything is done. The mac and cheese looks like something your sweet granny would make but don't be fooled. This stuff is sour and vile. Neither I nor my husband could eat more than a couple of bites. (I went in for a third somehow thinking that maybe I was wrong...but I was not.) Do not get it! On the other side of this big operation is a take out area. They have bagels, their own meats, bread, cookies, and other baked goods. Unfortunately, I believe their bagels are baked. They feel like regular bread, they have flat bottoms, and honestly, they taste and feel just like bread with a hole in the middle. Sadly, I took a dozen home thinking they would be like New York bagels. They are not even like Kentucky bagels! I do not recommend these. What I DO recommend you take home though, is some of their house made rye bread. It has the perfect chew and the perfect flavor. Don't wait, just get some! It's an interesting (and somewhat intimidating) experience going to Shapiros, but I'd definitely go back again. I am from Detroit so when i found out they had a corn beef restaurant here i jumped on it immediately. I went to their first location years ago in Keystone Crossing and i loved it! The bread was always warm and fresh. The corn beef was sliced really lean and flavorful. The customer service was great. When they closed it I was sad because i assumed that was the only one. Then my girlfriend told me about this Joint when i mentioned i wanted corned beef and had to travel home to get it! Walking in i loved how authentic the place look. It looks like the original location! They had a beautiful bakery of pies, cheesecakes, and other desserts. It was a buffet style but they served. The customer service was really great and check out was pretty smooth as they were getting busy. Corn beef was tasty, wish it would have a been a little leaner. Not sure if its an option but next time i will request it. The corn beef wasn't hot. It was pretty cold. I prefer my corn beef warm but it depends on the restaurant type and style. I am big on breads and how fresh it is... the bread was dry and not warm. We had the mac n cheese, it was runny with no taste (Mac N Cheese was kind if a waste of money). Its really pricey. For two i spent $60. 2 corned beef, two devil eggs, and mac n cheese. I think thats really expensive for a deli sandwich. I started comparing locations and i can remember the keystone location being a lot better than this one. Though it was still tasty but it was a difference in quality to me. The Food here is good as are the cookies, the prices are a little too higher for me to rationalize going back. I got charged a service fee of like $2 to pack my $20 sandwhich for pickup which I wasn't aware of. I can't believe I've lived in the city for 8 years and am just now getting to shapiros! I've heard tons about it but just have never went until recently a friend suggested that we go. Went in with an open mind, was was very pleasantly surprised! One section is where you can purchase some amazing looking things to take home and eat. If you dine in like I did, you get a tray and load up as you walk down the isle. So many choices! Visually It's all very appealing, and I had to practice some self control when making my way. I ended up getting, a fat deviled egg that was flavorful but not over powering, some mashed potatoes with brown gravy. For the main course I got a New York style Ruben, it was one of the best sandwiches I have ever had in the city. Coleslaw in the middle just really adds to it I think and of course a dill pickle spear to finish off the whole thing. Had heard the sandwich portions were generous but the Turkey sandwich was outrageous... that's not thin sliced bread in my photo it's thick cut sourdough, the meat portion just makes the bread look tiny. We went and tried this place for lunch today. Great selection of food, desserts all looked delicious, prices were pretty good. A little different then the other Jewish delis I have been to on the East coast but I couldn't wait to try it out. I went with coworker to this place for a pick up. I have heard a lot of good things about this place especially about their bakery items. I didn't dine or pick up dinner but bought bakery items. Their black Forest cake is divine!! I will definitely buy there again. They have a big sit down inside and all their dine in bakery items are sliced well on a plate and plastic wrapped for protection. Prices are great. To my knowledge they have no outdoor seating. No doubt the well-earned title of best Reuben in Indy resides here. This is a neat cafe/cafeteria-style place near downtown. I got in around 2:00 in the afternoon on a Wednesday, and there was a notably older crowd filling nearly half the seats in the large seating area. Decadent desserts are the first thing you'll see in the cafeteria-style line followed by small dishes of outstanding fruit salads, well-prepared veggie salads, and artfully prepared deviled eggs. Any sandwich you could want will be made by staff on the spot with a wide variety of breads, meats, cheeses, and condiments to choose from. The Reuben I had was the best ever, with generous corned beef layered with sauerkraut in the middle, the most tasty sauce and cheese, all bound by buttered and toasted pumpernickel bread. I wish I could rate higher since this is an Indy staple and has so much history! I just was not blown away by the food. The Rueben was very good and understandable why it's famous for it! The meat was tender and was the star of the show! The cabbage was not great and blame myself for picking that side! I really wanted a cabbage roll but that was another meal and could not buy on its own. The deviled eggs were very bland and to be perfectly honest, heavy on the mustard and I have truly made better at home. Hard to rate service because it's cafeteria style and between the plexiglass and the masks, it made it extremely difficult to understand any of the workers. It is nice they have bussers and you can leave all your trays and plates on the table. I so wish I could have loved it and left a higher rating, but just cannot. It won't discourage me from trying again and hopefully picking better choices. I would definitely lose the plexiglass and masks! I love Shapiro's. I was downtown and I thought there isn't a better sandwich in town, so why let's go! We stopped and had their Reuben. It is a sandwich that is big enough for two! So. This place slaps. When you're in the mood for yummy savory, catch the flavors at Shapiro's. My go-to has always been their meatloaf with the burnt Mac & cheese, spinach, green beans, red potatoes, latke or German potato salad for the 2 sides. But if you're in a sandwich mood, I cannot recommend the peppered beef enough! Get it with spicy brown mustard and Muenster cheese (this place ain't strict on kosher, it's kosher STYLE). But recently, I woke up too early on my weekend and decided to dip my toe into some nostalgia from my time in NYC as a child in the mid 80s. As a kid from Indy, I'd never heard of bagels before.
