I believe it's relatively new because I've never noticed it before on Block Island and I tend to notice ice cream places. Then again it is sort of tucked away in a corner and could be hard to see. The store is small, with a counter for the scream and various candies and other treats scattered around. A couple of tables inside and a courtyard overlooking the ocean on the outside. Saying that the view is great is actually an understatement. We didn't bother with the candy but the ice cream was absolutely incredible. Smooth and rich and no doubt containing a astronomical amount of calories and fat, just the way great ice cream should be. They don't have vast amount of different types but enough variety to satisfy anybody except those looking for something very unusual. There aren't many things better in life than sitting in a beautiful spot over looking the ocean and devouring great ice cream. Even though it was hoter than hell when we were on the island, a cool breeze was coming off the water and combined with the richness and algidity of the great ice cream the world was a perfect place. At least our little part of the world. Their are lots of ice cream places in the world but The Scoop Shack is one of those special places that I will always seek out when I'm on Block Island. The place to relax and just appreciate the moment and forget everything else. The ice cream here is exceptional but no matter how good the scream is, the views will always be even better.

I tried their blueberry chocolate flavor and was surprised by chomping on hearty pieces of fresh berries and large chocolate chunks. The waffle cones are really pricey, however, and I can't state whether they're worth it or not, since I wasn't willing to shell out $8. Overall, this is a good spot if you (or your kids) are yearning for ice cream on a hot summer day and it won't hurt your wallet as long as you're all willing to share a kiddie sized ice cream =P

The ice cream is always delicious, the employees are so sweet, and the cookies... OMG honey, they're massive. One cookie is big enough for four adults to share and still be happy. Another highlight is the little carousel out front--it's such a charming touch and perfect for kids. Between the treats, the atmosphere, and the friendly service, this place is a must-stop every time we visit.

The ice cream/gelato prices were a bit high in my opinion, and I was not too impressed by the flavor selection or quality. I was sold on getting a peanut butter ice cream scoop but after looking at the tub physically, I decided against it since it looked like it has melted and been refrozen. Instead, I got a scoop of the cookie dough gelato. One thing I did appreciate is that it did not have chocolate chips. I can't believe I'm saying this, but it did have too many cookie dough chunks - I would say on average, 3-5 chunks per spoonful so I couldn't really taste the gelato as much. I should've asked for a sample beforehand. It also had a mild freezer taste which I did not like. I think one standard scoop ending up being around $9. There were a lot of people when I got there so it might have been just me who did not have such a great experience. They did have a couple benches and tables outside. Also, I believe they have a sit down outdoor dining area for their restaurant portion, and they had some live music going which was nice. In addition, when you first walk in, they have a LARGE selection of pastries and they all look tasty. This shop is very close to where the ferry picks up and drops off in case you are looking for a treat before hopping on.

The owner mentioned the "berry blast" and "blood orange raspberry" are the most popular. I can attest that the blood orange raspberry was wonderful! They also have the option to have the popsicles dipped in chocolate, which we did not try this time but other folks seemed to enjoy! They had napkins and sanitizing wipes available for the inevitable melting. Such love and care went into these treats and the service was wonderful. Highly recommend next time you are on Block Island!

Unfortunately, that is the only positive to this place. I ordered 6 clam cakes and it took over 50 minutes to get them at 3 o'clock on a weekday. Absolutely unacceptable for it to take that long when service demand was mediocre at best. When I finally did receive my order they were burnt a dark brown. I love clam cakes and figured I'd at least give them a try for the benefit of the doubt. Inside the batter was raw to the point it was almost cool and the texture of play dough. In an entire clam cake I got 2 pieces of clam. The batter lacked any recognizable resemblance of spices or anything. No salt, no pepper, no paprika, nothing. The outside seating was trashed. Dirty seating with broken glass all over the patio. To top this dismal experience off, the kitchen staff have zero consideration for food safety. One line cook was wearing gloves that were torn to shreds, would handle finished food from the fry basket, touching the cooked food with his dirty bare hand and place it in to go boxes. No one changed their gloves or washed their hands the entire time I was there. Cooks were consistently touching to go containers, order tickets, order screen, uncooked food, and finished food without changing gloves or washing hands. Someone is going to end up sick from this place. TLDR: Save your time, taste buds, health, and dollars. Service was terrible, food was inedible, the seating area was gross, and basic food safety is nonexistent. Spend your dollars at Rebecca's instead.
