CASH ONLY!! Be prepared. I've heard about Payne's Donuts as a staple for Block Island so on my first trip, I knew I needed to try them. My friends and I walked and I'm not going to lie.....it's a pretty far walk from the ferry. On a hot day, the walk can suck. Payne's is a little food truck next to a kayak renting facility. There are a few tables to sit at with an umbrella. The prices are very reasonable. I believe they are freshly made cake donuts. So the moment of truth. I have waited years to finally try these donuts and do they hold up to the hype? No. They are not the best donut you will ever eat, as other reviews have stated. Maybe they changed the formula over the years but they taste like every other freshly made cake donut I've tried in RI. They're not bad, they are just soft from being fresh, which is nice. My mom and I read about this place so when we did the taxi tour of the island, we had to stop. Just basic donuts (plain, sugar, or cinnamon are the only 3 choices), fresh and done right. We got one of each but since they were in the same bag, they all kind of tasted similar (and delicious). It's a food truck that's not on the main street when you get off the ferry. I think it's about a mile if you wanted to walk or bike. I've heard there can be a huge line but we lucked out both times and didn't have a wait. Service was friendly and prompt. Payne's has been on Block Island since 1963. I'm always a little skeptical of dining establishments that are highly touted in very touristy areas as I've found that nostalgia and limited options can lead to dangerous rating inflation. I'm glad to report that there's no such inflation here at Payne's. The doughnuts are as good as mentioned in other reviews. In a tourist area particularly rife with mediocre food, Payne's stands out even more for their doughnuts. They're served warm. They're so pillowy and soft that yours truly took a bite and half of one of her doughnuts fell on the ground (they were nice enough to replace the doughnut). The doughnuts come in plain, sugar or cinnamon sugar. The sugar and cinnamon sugar add a very pleasant crunch that only heightens this amazing textural experience. I like how Scott M. had said Payne's is his favorite part of BI. I love that-and I agree. Payne's is approximately 1 mile away from the Block Island Ferry stop. I remember when donuts were sacred. Even Dunkin' made them fresh several times a day. Paynes is one of the few places where they still take donuts seriously. Payne's only makes three types: plain, sugar and cinnamon. That's understandable when considering the small size of the shop and the small size of the island. If they offered more flavors they'd probably just go to waste. Here's one recommendation for you...you will likely need to purchase a drink or beverage to wash them down. That's not a bad thing... I'm just pointing this out because I tried to get away without purchasing one and I couldn't do it. By the way, their roadside location makes for a great pit stop while riding a bicycle. Quite simply the best donuts I've ever had. I know, a statement like that seems too exuberant to be believed, but... dang, it's true. I'd buy a round-trip ferry ticket to Block Island just to enjoy some of these donuts again. Payne's is a small kitchen with a walk-up window, and a patio outside where happy donut-eaters can enjoy the crisp morning island air as they fulfill (or exceed) their carb quota for the day. We arrived before they opened, soon after sunrise, and were not the first in line. By the time Payne's was ready to serve, there were many other folks waiting patiently behind us, and with good reason. We were served a bag of sugar-coated cake-style donuts, still quite hot from the fryer. Don't expect an array of toppings here. Payne's is not Dunkin' or Krispy Kreme, no sir. You get plain or sugar. Fairly new establishment pumping out tiny diet killers. These doughnuts are pretty fantastic. Although, I am cognizant that waking up on the water and rowing to this place probably added to the overall experience. This place is located right by the dock so if you are in a slip or anchored over night you pretty much have to pass it to get into town.
