Have you ever had a wagyu cheesesteak? Nope, neither had I until a few weeks ago when I went to check out the brand spankin' new Shawarma Guys location in La Mesa - well, I'll tell you my friends, it's a delicious twist on a classic. Seasoned like classic shawarma but served on the traditional amoroso roll, (IYKYK), it's going to piss off the chessesteak purists, but if you're someone that simply enjoys delicious food, you'll love the hot take on Shawarma Guys Philly. Another menu item that I probably would not have ordered if it wasn't suggested but am glad that I did is the lemon cream chop fries. Dude. These fries are out of this world. The sauce is decadent and served on top of a pile of fries that easily hold up to the overflowing and delicious topping. It's shockingly simple and not built with an overwhelming amount of ingredients but it works. If you love carne asada fries, you'll love this version of well-dressed fries, from another region of the world. Am I a fan? Uhhh, I think that's clear. read more

I had been wanting to check out the food truck for a while now (saw it on the Food Network & always see it come up on Yelp), but finally got around to trying this place at their new brick and mortar location in La Mesa, which is small on the inside but very clean and well-lit with a decent amount of seating. Parking wasn't an issue in this plaza. Dalissa took our order and she was very nice. Donovan also delivered amazing customer service as he was so kind to accommodate my last minute request to swap out/add jalapeño hummus to the plate we ordered. He also came around to check on us while we were eating. We ordered the Wagyu Beef & Chicken Shawarma plate with fries on the side, Wagyu Beef Shawarma Egg Rolls (2pcs), and we had the side of Jalapeño Hummus which they gave us to try. The plate was generally good - I liked the seasoning, but the amount of meat on the plate seemed a little light (for the cost of the plate too). The garlic sauce on top was great. The original hummus was regular, nothing out of the ordinary - we liked the jalapeño hummus more. The pita bread on the side (not pictured) was ok. The fries were really good! They were cooked and seasoned perfectly. We also liked the wagyu beef shawarma egg rolls. The food overall was good, but best Mediterranean food I've ever had? Debatable. Based off the food alone I would give it a 3.6 out of 5 but the service bumped my rating to a 4. read more

My first visit to Shawarma Guys in their store front location and I have to say the experience was awesome. I wished I lived closer because I would definitely be a regular. I ordered the Wagyu beef egg rolls, chicken and beef wrap and fries. While I waited for my food to be done Max, Donavan and Julian made the experience even better with conversation. They are very knowledgable about their menu and the tables and chairs are very clean. The vegetables in the wrap were so fresh and the egg rolls crispy with so much flavor. The French fries were fresh to order and seasoned perfectly. I highly recommend all of these menu items. They will be opening a location soon in Mira Mesa and have a food truck location in South Park. read more

I got "The Chicken & Wagyu Beef Plate" Chicken was dry as jerky. Salad was bleh, tasted like lemon juice & parsley (small af compared to Cesar or American Salads). I didn't believe it at first, but I was super excited when I found out Shawarma Guys was expanding out of their food truck. Who would have known that this food truck would have a full brick and mortar in La Mesa! The server at the counter was extremely friendly! She recommended a number of fan favorites and even explained that this shop served gelato and cheesesteaks! Seems like more storefronts are popping up and will have exclusive items. Even togo, the Chicken Shawarma and Beef Shawarma plate was amazing! It held up well when reheated, so you know it must have been amazing fresh! The POS system was down and it was a little chaotic in there. However, everyone working did a stellar job working around the issue and did whatever necessary to take care of the customer, even hooking everyone up with free egg rolls for the hassle. After the delay with their operations, I was sure that the food was going to just be average thanks to the chaos. Boy was I wrong. Absolutely awesome food. Everything was delicious and the portions are huge so I have dinner tonight. I got the Greek chicken wrap and it's a new favorite. Wife got the chicken shawarma plate and it's the best in town. This place looked very promising and although it was good I was expecting better. First off the place doesn't seem genuine-it has that corporate feel to it, not the "mom and pop" vibe. Secondly, although the shawarma was good, there was no pita. It came in a freaking tortilla. Like I said, not genuine. Customer service was great and they also have hand made gelato. So that's a plus. Now the big question is would I go back? I would say if it was in my neighborhood I would go back. However I like trying new spots so I wouldn't go back unless I was starving and I happened to be in that area. read more

I've had their fries, chicken and wagyu plates, their pita and their sauces. I can't say a single bad or even neutral thing about any of it. The food is FANTASTIC. Period. Shockingly, though, the food isn't the star of the show at the new La Mesa location! The star of the show here is clearly the staff! I can't believe how inviting, kind, patient and helpful the staff is here! My wife and I walked in 20 minutes before closing on a Saturday and I felt like a jerk. I hate doing that, but we had to get our fix and we were getting it to go, soooo I was hoping to be treated ok. I was! I was treated like the first customer of the day. Really wanted to like this place, but I've had better. Ordered "To Go" and a group of 4 people got their food before me and the guy that ordered after me. Huh? I didn't end up getting what I ordered, a shawarma pita , I was mistakenly given a wrap that was size wise equivalent to a couple of rolled tacos. Very underwhelming. The second item ordered was a shawarma plate. When the order was finally ready, they mention that they are out of tabbouleh salad and instead gave a regular green salad . It would have been nice to know that up front not after waiting 30 min. for the order. Maybe it was just a bad night or maybe just the one employee while friendly, seemed very overly excited, flustered and overwhelmed while other employees were fine.
