I've been here twice and I can confidently say that this is some of the best Indian food I've ever had. I think it only has competition from the places I've been to in NYC. BEST saag I've ever had (tried both chickpea and chicken versions). Chili fish is amazing. Fantastic gobi manchurian. And both of those were as spicy as I requested. *Praise hands* Dreamy dal makhani. Perfect rice. Addictive garlic naan. My husband and friend have also tried the buffet and had nothing but glowing reviews about everything. The one thing I had a bite of from their plates was the biryani and honestly, it was a revelation - I feel like I finally understood what biryani was supposed to taste like. Super nice service. We had a to go order on Friday and I honestly have 0 complaints except that I ate too much! My husband got the butter chicken and I got the lamb curry, we shared the chicken lollipops and the lamb samosas because it was just too hard to make choices. I'm glad I didn't make any choices, because it was all divine! My husband is not a dark meat chicken fan and loved the lollipops, he's not a lamb person but loved the Samosas and the curry. Oh we also opted for some garlic naan and my husband decimated most of that but the bites I got were just amazing. We had a couple of their dishes catered for our wedding. Which was absolutely fantastic. This was our first time trying this place as a sit down experience. The atmosphere was really nice, music videos on the TVs for background. You can see the kitchen through windows right from your seats. The waiters seemed to work as a team. Who took our order wasn't the same as who brought the food, or who filled our waters. Authentic Indian food. Cozy atmosphere. There are varieties of different food and flavors. Buffet is expensive compared to buffet prices in Kalamazoo. But the food is very good. I like their butter chicken, Naan bread and the chai masala. They have tasty mango yogurt drink called (lassi) i highly recommend it if you like mango and yogurt. Nice experience in general. The lady who served our table was smiling, helping and friendly. I loved how it is easy and nice to spend the time at this restaurant without even worrying about a server who rush you to finish bcz they want to collect more tips. You can gather with friends, spend time talking, eating slowly and enjoying every bite of food and every sip that chai masala. It felt like doing food yoga rather than normal eating. read more

One of the better places for authentic Indian food in the Kalamazoo/Portage area. Unfortunately, it is located off the street in a plaza south of Best Buy on Westnedge. You will most likely be going there if you look up the place or is referred by a friend. They dont do so much for advertising the business. Seems like the restaurant has gone through several management/ownership in the past few years. Which in turn, effects the service, the quality of food, and the atmosphere. In my recent visit, we ordered chicken tikka masala, fish tandoori, samosas, and indian coffee. The tikka masala: wasnt quite what i expected. The chicken was nice and soft, the gravy was thick and rich, but the it didnt get a hint of sweetness (what im used to in a tikka masala). Overall the dish was 3/5 The fish tandoori: did not know what to expect with this one. It stole the spotlight as it was carried from the kitchen to our table. Its a sizzling dish served in a pottery plate. Comes with veggies like onions and peppers. The fish was great, a bit too fishy for some people, and was cooked well. Overall 4/5 The Indian coffee: exceeded my expectations!! On the menu, you are promised to never go back to regular coffee after trying this, and it is to the point lb to lb. We've done both take-out/to-go and sit down here; this review is for our most recent to-go order. I won't say too much about ambiance since we didn't stay for long. We also have a peanut (no cashew nut) allergy. They were really good about double checking everything for peanuts. Took about 20 minutes from order to ready to go. We ordered two vegetarian dishes, the Palak Paneer and the Aloo Gobi, and two chicken dishes, Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Curry. Each comes with rice and you can dictate your level of spice. I moved from Chicago to Portage earlier this summer and I've been trying to find my go-to take out spot... after having Hillside, I will look no further. The garlic naan is a must order, and then after that I don't remember exactly what we ordered but one dish was a soup, the other two were vegetarian based dishes. All had incredible flavor, we went with mild spice as I've learned my lesson to start small and work my way up at unknown Indian restaurants, and they provided plenty of rice! This restaurant has ruined all indian restaurants for me. I'm an avid enjoyer of Indian food, especially Hillside Cuisine. The service is always top notch and the food is so fresh and plenty amount to save for 2 separate meals. That being said, I decided to try another Indian restaurant out expecting them to be of similar or even better quality than Hillside...unfortunately that was not the case. Safe to say I will be sticking with Hillside until circumstances cause me to move far away. I recommend Hillside 100%. read more

We stopped in for the Sunday buffet. The Butter Chicken and Gobi Manchurian were my favorite things! So delicious!!! Which made comparison of Hillside to Kalamazoo's Saffron buffet tricky. The Hillside buffet was $15/person vs Saffron's under $10/person -there were around the same number of options. Hillside served outstanding Butter Chicken and Gobi Manchurian that I now ADORE AND can not get at Saffron. However, Saffron is a bit cheaper and their Raita (yogurt cucumber sauce) is ON POINT! What I think was Raita (unlabeled) at hillside was very thin. If it comes down to I'm having an Indian/Pakistani food craving, I'll probably go to Saffron because of the price. If I'm mad craving Butter Chicken and Gobi, I will cross my fingers it's on the buffet all the time and head to Hillside. Atmosphere: clean with friendly staff. A few of the handles at the buffet were dirty and off-putting with food -but I think a sloppy patron in front of me was to blame. read more

Usually I enjoy my meals at this restaurant, but that could be because I usually order ahead. Today, I happened to walk-in. While being helped by a young lady, another staff member, says quite loudly, "make sure you get the payment after order!". Strange. I waited for my food and didn't hear him say this to anyone else. This disrespectful tone and action was designated for me. After my meal was completed. I asked the staff member for his name and to speak to his superior. Hopefully this serves as a teaching moment. Tonight we only received half of our order, which wasn't cheap, and we asked for no tofu in our vegetarian korma, but it is FULL of tofu. I never thought another Indian restaurant would knock Saffron down from the number one spot in my heart, but after this latest visit Hillside has come out the victor! There's just such a wide breadth of things to try on their buffet and everything is delicious. On our visit yesterday they had soup, mini samosas, butter naan, papadums, two kinds of rice, two desserts (the coconut mousse was fabulous), two drinks (mint lemonade and masala chai), a DIY salad station (which itself was much less impressive than the salad at Saffron), lots of sauces (chutneys, raita, etc.) and nearly a dozen entrees including both vegetarian and meat dishes. Even just grabbing a bite or two of each thing, you'll wind up stuffed and so satisfied. It was nice to see them doing such a brisk business on Sunday early afternoon. You'd be hard-pressed to find a bigger bang for your buck then this impressive buffet. read more

This is the first time something like this has happened to me here, but it ruined my appetite completely. Locally owned, everything we have tried has been delicious. My go-to order is vegetable samosa and paneer makhani, with a side (or 2) of garlic naan. The naan is so fragrant, flavorful, light and airy. If you love garlic, order this. If not, try the plain or cheese naan. I'm not vegetarian, but the vegetable options are so good, I don't need order chicken versions. If you want to be more adventurous, ask the owner, Naveen, for entree suggestions. Over the years this location has been handed between more than one owner so the quality of the product has varied. The folks holding the reigns now are absolutely wonderful and the food quality is superb! I'm a big fan of Tikka Masala and they totally nail it here. I'd recommend a side of garlic naan. Due to COVID restrictions they've been working on regaining their momentum so orders and delivery can be a bit delayed but they're doing their best. A gracious and good natured bunch here. Pricing is reasonable and the portions are more than adequate. I'm glad to see both the quality of what's served along with the pride with which they serve it. read more

Driving through and so glad we found this gem! Authentic south Indian dishes, which is not easy to find. Lots of vegan options, too! Wait staff was very professional and attentive. Big plus for the children's high chair that was clean and had wide stable legs (it was not old and sticky like you find in so many places). Nice big tastefully decorated dining room, too. The only things missing that would make this 5 stars is no non-dairy milk available for the coffee and no area in the bathrooms for diaper changing. We came for dinner and decided not to get the buffet. We don't always eat a lot and wanted left overs. The palak paneer is rich and flavorful. The lamb vindaloo we wish was spicier but now we know to ask. I still got a bit of sweat on my forehead though. The garlic naan was really garlicy: not so garlic it burned but it had nice soft minced garlic which enhances the stong spice of the other dishes. We ate a small portion of our meal three hours ago and think of the food now I think I am going to binge watch some Gorden Ramsey show and eat some leftovers. read more

I can't say anything in regard to the dine in side of this establishment but we ordered Uber eats to our car, lol , while waiting over night for an estate sale. Sort of like Uber eats while camping! I ordered three types of naan ( plain, onion and Peshawari ) all were delicious. I also added the potato tikka? So yummy. The offered tamarind and mint chutney with out me having to ask. That was a nice change up from most Indian delivery. My main was the lamb vindaloo. This being my 100th time (at least) ordering this dish and this one was one of THE best. The only negative was my Indian coffee was cold. That's not a deal breaker and it's prolly hard to keep warm as a delivery driver. Authentic and delicious South Indian food. We came for the lunch buffet and it was hands down great. The mutton soup was the best in the buffet in my opinion; not only was the broth tasty, the mutton itself was super tender and melted in my mouth. The Apollo fish dish was also very tasty, kept on going back for seconds on this one. I personally love that chai is served as part of the buffet. It definitely served as a well needed palate cleanser. I usually try to drink my chai with no sugar as much as possible, but I do suggest adding sugar to this one.
