We come here often I love the bartender/server. Her name is Jennifer I believe or Jessica I have a terrible memory. But she's great. She always thinks of everything prompt and always has a smile on her face. She's a great server and should be recognized as such. The food is good. I like trying everything on the menu so far I've just been going down the line. I really like the New York strip with shrimp and I like having it cooked already highly recommend the French onion soup as well. This is where I like to come for a decent steak. they also have lovely mock tails and I really like that. I can get a nice beverage and doesn't have to have alcohol in it. Went to Black Rock Bar & Grill the other day with my husband, and wow ! what a vibe! If you're into delicious meats, fun luxorius experiences, and cozy conversations over sizzling hot stones... this place is calling your name!! We ordered a little bit of everything, ribeye, Angus, shrimp and every bite was better than the last. The ribeye? Absolute perfection. Melt-in-your-mouth tender and cooked in no time right on the hot stone. The Angus was rich and flavorful too, but it takes a little longer to cook, which is not bad at all ! just gave us more time to talk and enjoy the moment. We also had this Field salad with apples, strawberries, oats crunch, and lettuce ... and OMG!!! it was so refreshing and flavorful. Sweet, crisp, and balanced with that oat crunch... it's a must! Number one for me! I am addicted to this s salad now. the service? The staff were sweet and walked us through everything even which cuts were extra tender and how best to cook them on the stone. Loved that! Only if they make effort to smile more, they would deserved 10/10 Prices were reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food, the presentation, and the whole elegant yet relaxed atmosphere. Most of the meat is halal, very clean, and clearly top quality. Dropped in on a Wednesday night about 4:30P. Place was quiet so we were rated immediately in the bar area. Decided to go with the Black Rock Combo; small sirloin, three shrimp and couple of scallops. Wifey had the same. We started with the standard salad. Wifey had the chef and I had the Caesar. Salads were large, crisp and nicely dressed. Wifey had the baked sweet which was large and well prepare. I went with the yellow Yukon mashed potatoes. Serving was generous but needed a topping so requested some additional butter. Cooking on the 700 degree black rock was fun but a little tricky. Flavors were very good. Steak sauce provided was good but would have liked a few more choices. My first time this past Sunday to Black Rock did not leave a good impression after hearing good things about it. Our group of 5 arrived about 530-6p to enjoy a graduation celebration. It took an hour to receive our food. Food-wise, I had the Blood Orange Lemonade (really good!) and the 6 oz sirloin with coconut shrimp. They were okay, but I did like the orange marmalade sauce for the shrimp. After waiting so long, we were ready to leave because it had been a long day. We asked for to go boxes, while waiting for the to go boxes, we began eating. Our server Sarah would be gone for extended amounts of time over multiple instances. Our party discovered that we were missing a side item for one of the meals. Sarah reviewed her tickets and I ask can it be comped? We don't need a replacement because we're ready to go (we had a baby with us) & this visit hasn't been enjoyable. She was gone again for an extended period of time 10 mins or more), further extending how long we're there. Sarah kept reiterating it was very busy. It was STEADY not busy & that is not a reason for your guests to receive subpar service. In this industry, holidays, community events (ie graduations) , etc are going to be busy. It's how you prepare to handle it is what matters. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of less is because of the manager. He stepped in, listened, and fixed the situation, and I really appreciated that. Because of him, I'd be willing to give Black Rock another shot. Thank you. read more

Make sure you know where your going! I see a lot of reviews mentioning smelling like steak. I think that's a given based on the whole experience that is expected here. If you don't want to cook your steak, you can request them to do that. Keep in mind, the stones are 700 degrees! You will get warm and frankly, there will be a bit of splattering, so perhaps don't wear a tuxedo here... We have been to several Black Rock locations and have been to this location a few times now. On this occasion, we went ahead and let our 9 year old and 10 year old get their own stone and cook. They loved it!! My wife and 10 year old order filets and they were excellent. My 9 year old ordered off the kids menu that had sirloin tips. They were actually really good. The only true issue we had, or I had, was my New York strip was not nearly the quality I expected. I wish I would've ordered the filet. Being there on a Sunday afternoon there was absolutely no wait for a table. Our server kept in front of us throughout the meal and did a fantastic job. I was extremely thankful they had TVs on around the bar so we could watch Michigan win the big ten tourney. Overall a very comfortable place to enjoy a nice dinner. read more

Have been there several times. The last visit will be our last! Waitress was terrible. Ordered our food & drinks. After a long wait. Our Waitress came back. Out of ingredients for wife's drink. Went to restrooms on way out 2 sinks in each. Each had 1 that barely worked AND mens was about to fall off! Wrote the manager AND still got no reply of any kind! We loved this place, BUT,after our last experience ( not cheap either), we will NEVER return. The manager should have at least reached out but, no attempt. We will never return! Sad. Our last visit was the worst experience I've had in any restaurant in quite a while. It started off normal if a little slow, we ordered our meals just before our appetizers arrived and spent an hour waiting on our entrees on a Tuesday night. Our waitress disappeared for most of that hour not even stopping back to check on drinks. When we finally got our food my daughters lobster tail was cold, my wife and sister-in-laws steak (which they'd asked to be cooked for them rather than cook themselves) were exactly opposite cook type they'd requested. When our waitress finally came back another 20+ minutes later to check on us we told her about the overdone steak. The manager was kind enough to cook it and take it off the bill, but for such an expensive and "high end" restaurant this was a horrible experience even with the two corrections. We were there for 2.5+ hours for what should have been a total of an hour dining experience. I doubt we'll be back any time soon. read more

I stopped by here for a late night dinner and drinks with friends and sat at the bar. I had the volcano shrimp tacos that were very good. My friends son had the filet on the hot stone. I know it's a novelty but it was fun to watch him cook his steak within minutes on the 755 degree stone. There is a lot of smoke but he said it was worth it because the steak was excellent. Cloth napkins are also appreciated. Booth flat top and bar seating. Full bar with probably 50 beers on tap. Clean restroom. Good service. I don't remember if they had wifi. Large Lot parking. Manager said he'd discount the meal but then added two lamb chops to the bill and discounted one. So steak comes with a premium starter for 4 dollars was charged 7. No running water in bathroom. My ribeye steak was thin-cut and well marbled and tender. You cut each slice and cook on a 750° volcanic rock with butter flavored with garlic, rosemary and seasoning. This hands on because a medium rare steak takes 15-20 seconds per slice! It's an innovative experience! The downside is Splatter is bound to coat your glasses and attire so be prepared, and the bill to cook you own steak. It still is awesome treat! read more

This was my first time experiencing this place and it was for my grandmother's 80th birthday celebration, bringing together family from all over the nation. I was able to get the ahi tuna while the rest of my party got steak. My uncle said to get the steak already prepared because it would be terrifying to almost burn myself but I was up for the challenge! It was so cool to have the hot rock in front of me cooking the meat. I will say with the elderly it may be a bad idea if someone isn't there to help them. The mushrooms were pretty good. And the salad is yummy! I liked the espresso martini and the birthday dessert is huge, and there is a cone in the middle that usually has a sparkler but they said they ran out. They give a military discount! For my 2 sides, I got the asparagus and sweet potato mash, the asparagus was pitiful, to say the least, they were thinner than the straw served with the cocktails, and the sweet potato mash was covered in brown sugar. The pretzel bites with cheese were five stars! I loved how soft and salty they were, perfectly cut into bite-sized pieces. Food is good, if you haven't tried the black rock - It's a must. The only con is the Portage location is always booked. Sometimes they'll do reservations, sometimes they wont - it's certainly a hit and miss. Example; one night we had to leave because we had a show to catch and we sat at our table waiting for 55 minutes only to receive our drinks. But on the flip side, we've had nights when it was pretty empty and our wait time was less than 20 Minutes - so it's a true hit and miss. They also brought another one a cold stone to cook her food on. lol My order, I got an old fashioned. Instead of using bourbon cherries they used Marachino cherries. $13 drink. How cheap!
