Food? High quality & delicious, with large portions at a good price. The chicken shawarma plate comes with a small puddle of hummus topped with 2 olives, a small amount of chopped salad consisting of shredded iceberg, and small diced tomato and cuke topped with feta. The chicken was so tender and beautifully spiced! It's fried up with well cooked (as opposed to raw) peppers and onion. Tender and delicious! It's accompanied by tasty, fluffy, yellow basmati rice. One pita comes with the plate. It is hot and fresh tasting. The plate is enough to feed two normal eaters. We've also had the falafel and it, too, is delicious; crispy but fluffy. For those not wanting Middle Eastern food, they have some darned good burgers, too! Service? Always friendly and helpful. Ambiance? None because this is a gas station! If you eat there, you eat outside at a picnic table. The place is clean and neat! It's great to have this cuisine in North Monterey County! We will be back often as it's a good value, and delicious. I saw this place on Yelp and thought I would give it a try as I don't know of any good Mediterranean food places in the Salinas area as I travel up here for work. I've often got Mexican food at a gas station but never Mediterranean. The people were friendly as I entered the store and I ordered my favorite chicken shawarma to go. My plate came with chicken shawarma, hummus, rice, pita bread and little salad for a fair price. Everything was quite tasty and the shawarma had really good flavor. It had a sauce on it. I wish they gave me a little more chicken but the plate was filling. I give the Shawarma King 4.5 stars and it would be a 5 if chicken serving was bigger, but overall it was very good. Don't underestimate this place, one of the best gyros I've had in a while around here! Especially for a gas station. Gyros wrap was spicy and flavorful with plenty of lamb/beef to fill you up for the day. I'm glad I asked for regular spicy and not extra spicy there was a kick but you could still taste all the different flavors, the gyro wrap also has lettuce but I asked for mine without it. I also got the Greek fries which were fresh and not skimpy on the toppings of taziki and feta cheese. I was surprised this place was in a gas station. But it is one of the cleanest kitchens I have seen in a gas station. The electronic menu board is above the refrigerated enclosures. Just order at the counter and pay at the gas station counter. Seems like same owner/family runs this station. I ordered the Beef & Lamb Shawarma Wrap and a small order of Falafel (5 for $4.99) and these came out hot and crispy and were hand made. Service is friendly, but your food may take a little while especially because it can get busy and everything is made to order. There are so many food options and everything is so fresh! We got the special fries (fries with chicken shwarma and some mysteriously delicious sauces plus cheese). We also got the gyro wrap. All of the flavors compliment each other very well and although it's a lot of food, it's so good you don't realize it when it's gone. The sauces were our favorite. Zero ambience--it's in a gas station mini-mart. Don't let that deter you! The family that owns the place were so very nice with our ignorant questions about the food. When he was wrapping and packing our wraps, a young man I guessed was a son, rolled the paper so we could peel it down as needed as we ate it (while driving). He packed the napkins in, then instructed us it might drip so the napkins were right where we might need it. The food was a nice mix of savory meat with crunchy veggies, and quite a welcome change from our typical burger or burrito on the road. Loved it! read more
