There are plenty of seafood restaurants in Astoria that has this ordering style where you go up to the front and you see this fresh selection of seafood and you can order by the weigh/item. The ones we had been to in the past usually allows you to also pick different type of cooking style or seasoning but this place only cooks it their way. It's good for people who are indecisive but disappointing for people who want variety of flavor. They usually have a section of appetizers and drinks you can order on a separate menu as well. The staffs were very low energies when we visited on a weekend night. The overall ambiance and interaction made us feel a little uncomfortable. We ordered: - eggplant dip - fries - Greek salad (large) - cooked fish - calamari - octopus Honestly I was so disappointed with the food. It didn't taste as fresh and was overall too salty. The eggplant dip had a weird taste. Friend fries were not as crispy and unevenly distributed portions of salt. The calamari was nothing special. The fish was okay, and the octopus was so salty we actually sent back the dish. It was very difficult to enjoy it. The staff was so accommodating and actually took the dish off our bill. (Thank you!! - great customer service!). My favorite item was probably the Greek salad, but then again it's hard to mess up a salad. In my defense, doesn't this mean my review of Le Petit Pecheur (which always makes me think of George Bizet's underrated opera, for all you Romantic Era nerds) wil be...purer? No annoying comparisons and such? I digress. We came, we seafood-ed, we smiled. - Fried Sardines: My favorite dish of the night. Perfectly breaded, lightly crispy, totally filling, yet not briney or heavy. I think I'm in love.... - Baba Ganoush + Hummus + Pita: I forget why we ordered these, but they were tasty and creamy and made a nice distraction while we waited for our entrees. - Grilled Octopus: Perfectly chewy and zesty, exactly the kind of poulpe you might enjoy on the beachy coast of the southern Mediterranean. - Scallops: Also well cooked, and tastier than they had any right to be considering the simple seasoning. - Shrimp Linguine in butter garlic sauce: I mean, you really can't go wrong with a dish like this. My only regret was having to share it with five other friends. - Branzino: Butterflied, tender and full of flavor. There are many branzino dishes out there. This one won't break the bank, and will leave both your stomach and your wallet happy. If you need more, definitely pad your meal with Mashed Potatoes and Fries because carbs are happy things, and happy things deserve to be eaten. Space is ample, as are the portions, and service is quick and friendly. They play a lovely mix of North African French and Arabic music, which just adds to the beachy resort town atmosphere, IMO. Astoria has many options for pick your own seafood places, so I was curious when I saw this newer one pop up. We got the octopus, scallops, lobster tails, shrimp, two sides, and asked for all the seafood to be grilled. The shrimp was definitely the best thing out of the bunch. The rest was not bad, but cooking was definitely a bit inconsistent. The octopus and scallops could've used more grilling, but the lobsters were too burnt in some places which made it hard to chew. My husband and I had a delicious dinner here over the long weekend. It was a little confusing figuring out if we sit first or order first, but the team working helped us get it all sorted. We ordered a variety of dishes, our top two being the fried calamari and the grilled scallops... but everything was high quality and cooked perfectly. Part fish market, part casual restaurant: enter and go to the fish counter first to pick your fish, amount, and cooking style, then go to your table for a generous basket of delicious garlic bread and any sides you want to order. Fish is incredibly fresh, high quality and cooked perfectly -- we had the large wild shrimp and branzino, both beyond reproach! And the fries are a must as well. I tried this spot for dinner with a friend. In the front of the restaurant is the seafood bar in a display case. Literally any seafood you can think of! The instructions for how to order are also by the front. Step 1: Choose your seafood, Step 2: choose how it's cooked, and Step 3: sit down and order sides! To be honest, seeing all the seafood, I was overwhelmed at first bc there are SO MANY OPTIONS!!! But the staff was really nice- both the servers and the guy at the seafood counter who is the owner. We had asked what he recommends which was really helpful if you aren't sure what to pick. My friend and I eat everything and anything (but if you had certain restrictions or preferences, you can share that and they will most definitely take it into account). We ended up with a variety of dishes by the end. Our favorites were the calamari, the octopus, red potatoes, and fried eggplant. We ordered two types of calamari: fried calamari and calamari provencal, which was calamari stir fried in a really aromatic, umami seasoning including olives. I don't even like olives (usually), but having this in the dish gave it a great flavor! The octopus was my personal favorite because it was delicious and the texture was seriously so so good, and so fresh. As sides, we loved the red potatoes (yum!) and the fried, crispy eggplant that was covered in a tomato-based sauce. Really happy with our meal here, and would definitely come back. Really taste fresh fish dinner. Everything was delicious although I didn't realize the clams would be breaded, so that was disappointing. Plus they were full of sand, very unappetizing. Besides the sandy clams everything tasted wonderful. My favorite were definitely the scallops, followed closely by the bronzino. Service was okay but got busy by the time we were leaving so less attentive. Called for reservations on Friday night 7:30pm but plenty of seats when we arrived. It's a nice decorated restaurant. Good for a date or small groups. Was sad to find out they don't serve any alcohol. A glass of white wine would have really rounded out the experience. Visited twice and both times have been amazing. This is probably my favorite pick + cook your seafood spot in the area. The seasoning is not too strong / not too salty. You have to get the branzino (grilled), the octopus, greek salad and mussels (white sauce preferred over tomato sauce). L got a pound of scallops which was a lil too much. I would have ordered 1/2 lb and maybe some shrimp or octopus. We also ordered roasted eggplant dip...and fries, the fries wasn't necessary but who doesn't like fresh cut fries .. waiter gave us a basket of fresh garlic bread. I actually got full on the bread with the eggplant. The scallops were too salty for me but L loved them. I took the rest of the branzino home. My favorite restaurant for pick your own seafood. I have been here multiple times and the seafood is perfectly cooked everytime. The seasoning on the seafood is also balanced. You start by choosing seafood at the front and telling the staff how you would like it cooked. It can be grilled, sauteed, or fried. Then you choose a table to sit at and the server will bring you a menu to choose sides and appetizers. Each table comes with free garlic bread. My favorite seafood to order here are the grilled branzino and sauteed scallops. The octopus and shrimp are also great. read more

We were a party of 3 last night. We were greeted by harsh pouring rain all night yesterday, luckily this place is not so packed inside. Service is relatively quick, we were told to pick our fresh selection upfront by what seems to be the owner's son. We picked up some fresh squids for fried calamari [end up ordering 2x plates], 1x medium sized branzino, 1x lbs of tiger prawns [8 large pieces], 1/2 lbs of sea scallops [6 pieces]. As starters we were served garlic pita breads, we also ordered babaganoush dip [roasted eggplant dip], for sides we ordered grilled asparagus and their recommended basic garlic mash potatoes. Their seafood quality is superb, we ordered most of the seafood grilled except for the calamaris. We chowed down everything pretty quickly, calamaris are easy to eat, no rubbery texture at all, excellent freshness. Branzino is sweet and juicy, well cooked. Tiger prawns charred to perfection as well as the sea scallops. Their side dish, mashed potatoes, you guys have to order it. At first, it looks nothing special and bland... let it not fool you by its appearance, the taste is magical, never had mashed potatoes taste just like last night. Everything are well cooked, not salty nor bland, pretty much well balanced. I hope this establishment can maintain their quality control, feared once it goes viral and trending, it will just be another overrated spot. For now, feel free to give this place a visit. Price wise and the quality of the freshness we receive goes hand to hand, fair bill of sale. Then I had to prompt her to bring us utensils, lids and bags with the takeout food, a pen with the receipt. It was frustrating at the end because the dinner took much longer than expected. The table next to us also got the wrong items on their bill and I had to ask her about the menu which she didn't know well. So we had to literally get up and tell the chef what we wanted. I ordered French fries and lemon potatoes, two totally different potato dishes with the same problem. Both were literally sopping wet and moist. The worst lemon potatoes I've ever had, the sauce was straight up water and oil with a hint of lemon, no flavor. For 5.99 we got raw French fries just thrown in a paper bag...and yes that's how many French fries came in the bag. Greek salad came with no dressing so I had to make my own Quality seafood is the hard part, and they nailed that. I have been to other seafood restaurants in Astoria but hands down this is my fav and best seafood. Everything is so fresh and reasonable. You choose your own dish and they cook for you. My fav is fried calamari!!! I crave for it!! The young owner, Mateen is very professional and friendly. He and his brother make the best drinks (no alcohol). A hidden gem in Astoria. My son and his girlfriend took me to this restaurant for mother's day celebration. I have been there several times since then and trying different items on their menu. I have been introducing this place to family and friends. You choose your seafood with guidance and then it's cooked in accordance to your preference.They use olive oil, garlic and other herbs to prepare the seafood. They have sides of salt, black pepper and olive oil at the table of you feel you need to add to your portion. They have other Mediterranean appetizers and sides items on their menu to accompany your seafood dishes. They also offer unlimited garlic bread.
